Charles Mann: UGA recruit banned from playoffs

UGA signee Charles Mann (AJC)

One of UGA’s top basketball recruits won’t get a chance to help his team try to win a state championship because he was ejected from the team’s last playoff game.

Charles Mann signed with UGA in the early period and is the point guard at Milton High School, which plays Harrison at 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the Class AAAAA  semifinals.

Mann is ineligible to play in Milton’s next two games because he was ejected after being assessed two technical fouls in last Saturday’s quarterfinals win against North Gwinnett. Milton’s coach told the AJC on Wednesday night that he tried to get the severe penalty overturned this week by the Georgia High School Association.

“There’s not really a process to appeal to judgment,” Milton coach David Boyd told the AJC on Wednesday night. “We thought it was a bad call but there’s not really an avenue to appeal. You can’t bring up a video to someone, show it and have them change anything.

“Unfortunately, we’re stuck with what appears to be a bad call. It cost a kid a chance to play the semifinals, and it cost our team. It’s going to be very difficult to win the next two games without Charles Mann playing with us.”

The 6-foot-3 Mann averaged 12 points and 8 assists after transferring from Union Grove to Milton before his senior season.

On the second technical, Mann was whistled for taunting a defender after scoring a basket. Milton’s coach disputes the call, according to the AJC’s Todd Holcomb.

“He didn’t point a finger, he didn’t jaw at him, he just looked at him,” Boyd said of the second technical. “I don’t understand. If you’re yelling at somebody, I get it, but [a technical for] looking at a player seems awfully harsh. It’s excessive. In the elite eight, that’s a tough call.”

We’ve got the video. What do you think? Good call or bad call? Was it justified? Please post your comments below.

A bad call was the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on AJ Green a few years ago vs. LSU!!!!!!
========================================
Lots of interesting commentary . The call against UGA was so over the top stupid it deified logic .

I do think nate from detroit hit upon something I see happening in a good number of sports at at levels and in all locations . To say it is about showboating and whether you are for or against that is a false dichotomy . Before you can ever reach that point you first have to have CONSISTENCY in the way the calls are made .

I am not talking about complete and absolute uniformity amongst all refs . As nate mentioned … how about uniformity in the same game by the same refs ? You see refs at the pro level all the way down to the pee wee leagues now apparently thinking THEY are there to pick the winners and losers . It doesn’t matter what kind of legalistic torturing of the rules they need to do it either . No shame involved what so ever .

As far as players showboating … I despise it . That becomes irrelevant when the refs decide they want to be bigger showboats than the players . You see it across the sports spectrum . Warping their calls in whatever direction they see fit and even changing them on the fly even while a single game is still in action . There has most certainly been a huge cultural change in that regard .

That isn’t sour grapes talking either . I could have cared less about the ultimate UGA/LSU winner or loser a few years back . Some of my biggest complaints have popped up out of similar games where I had no real rooted interest in either side . It cuts to the core of what competition is , how you do it and what it means to our society at large .

Do you want to take a stand on showboating ? I am right there with you . Just get the showboating refs in line FIRST ,and keep them there ….

That was a bunch of BS. The ref should loose the right to ref games after that terrible call.

There’s been a few unwanted guests in one of the University of Georgia’s largest dorms.
Put 1,000 college students — and their cheese pizza boxes — in one building, and chances are decent rodents will also move in. That’s been the case at Creswell Hall, a high-rise dorm for first-year students.

The only that could be worse than that call would be allowing that Ref to call another game in the playoffs. No excuse for this guy not to have his whistle taken from him.

Now Boyd and Milton fans know what its like to have a bad call against them.. REMEMBER THE FOUL CALLED with no time left on the clock, 2 years ago against NORCROSS… Milton got 2 free throws with no time to win by 1… It’s ashamed the ref’s take the game away from the kids.. Typical of GHSA referee’s….

Refs are there for one reason. To officiate the game and be transparent to everyone. And to include, Be Unbiased, Fair, and when in question about a call confer with fellow officials and make the best call.

That guy was the head intramural official at Georgia Southern when I played intramural’s there. He is a total idiot and all the officials had quick whistles because of him. It does not surprise me one bit he would make a call like this.

@ Chris – huh? “He was staring down the kid halfway back down the court which is taunting- and just because he wasn’t yapping at that moment does not mean he had not been the entire game.” First of all, what video were you watching? Secondly, if the ref used that play to call something that should have been called earlier, the ref is wrong!

I coached basketball on the varsity level for 25 years in the state of Georgia. Went to several state tournaments and obviously were in many region tournaments. This is the most blatantly bogus call that I’ve ever seen…and I have seen many, both for and against me. First of all, what is a 27 year old doing calling state tournament games? Can you say…Politics? You can’t get away from it. Officials that have no business calling these games get pushed into the tournaments by their associations. This gentleman should be banned from ever calling tournament games again as he obviously had an agenda. You can tell by the way he went after the Milton kid. It’s just so obvious. I don’t have a dog in the fight but that youngster and his teammates were penalized by an over zealous official who wanted to be seen. Well, you were seen…and hopefully for the last time on the state level!

As a former referee I think that referee should never be allowed to work another state tournament game! The ref clearly had his own agenda that had nothing to do with integrity and fairness!

Look, oldoldcoach….

Your eyesight is shot. The stupid kid did the blatant stare down that’s been a no no in sports across the board for years now.

He deserved exactly what he got. Had he not managed yet another technical earlier in the game for being even dumber then, this wouldn’t be an issue at all.

If I remember corrrectly the refs in the AJ Green incident admited the call was a bad one during the next week.. Nothing less is needed in this situation. Otherwise, any standard of fairness is out of the window.

After watching the replay there is no question the referee had it in for the kid. The ref was behind Charles and so he couldn’t have seen whether Charles was saying something to the other player or not. This should have been reviewed by the high school association and overturned. I feel sorry for Charles that he will miss the last two games off his career.

How weird I thought he was guilty before I even saw the video (considering how many times two T’s are ever called on a single player in a game.

Surprising and shocking. The head ref should have overruled the call, and if it was the head ref, he should be reprimanded IN PRINT so this young man’s name is not tarnished (like it is with the AJC headline). UGA should file a complaint as well, IMO.

From that look above, the ref absolutely blew it! But what we don’t know, had he been warned prior to that play for talking or staring down the other player??? Yes he didn’t say a word, but a stare can start a fight as easy as words. This is HS basketball and the problem is these kids watch TV and think they can do the same thing the college and pro players do and THEY CAN NOT!!!

I started Basketball officiating the year after I graduated from High School, and eventually made it to college ball. I’ve seen some really poor officiating and rotten calls, but this call was so far out of bound given the instructions the State High School Officiating Clinic provides and even the pre-tournament clinic, that this official should never be allowed on a floor again above the 10 and under children’s level. I’ve never hung out another official before in print, but this is disgraceful, uncalled for, and unjustifiable behavior by a man being paid to make decent calls. Not great, or even good, just fair, and this doesn’t pass the smell test, it reeks.

As a former offical, I was taught to never let the game get out of control. I don’t think officals in Ga are taught this important rule. The best set of Referees are the refs that let the players determine the out come of a game. The GHSA needs help with the training they to its officals especially on how to keep the game under control!!.

Why deaden the ball after the basket and mug? You know you can’t do that. But kids today don’t care about the rules only mugging it up. They are so so important that is why all the noise about this and the space on the AJC. Lets go back to the message Cairo football sent this year. 2 players do a robbery plea and finish the season. When they lose in playoffs to Peach Co (football we are talking) they go to jail to serve their time for robbery! Felons playing high school football. What goes on in these games is against the rules and bad sportmanship but no cares the players are just out there to feed the beast.. And you folks are the beast. Play by the rules at least in high school traveling and carrying the ball are gone with the peach baskets
