Tramel Terry: South Carolina’s No. 1 prospect commits to UGA … again

South Carolina’s No. 1 overall prospect has committed to UGA for a second time, and this time WR Tramel Terry said he’s sticking to it.

The 6-foot, 180-pound wide receiver from Goose Creek (S.C.) High School picked the Bulldogs over South Carolina and Clemson, among his 20 scholarship offers. Terry is UGA’s best import from South Carolina since AJ Green.

Terry originally committed to  UGA on “Dawg Night” last July but backed off the pledge a couple of months later to consider other options. He privately committed again to UGA on a Feb. 24 Junior Day and went public with it on Tuesday.

Mark Richt gave some Biblical wisdom to Terry to handle the recruiting process (AP)

“I just felt like home at Georgia,” Terry told the AJC. “I de-committed just to look around and see other places where I could get my degree. I felt like I needed to do the smart thing and take my time, so I visited other places like Alabama, Virginia Tech, everywhere … and I felt like Georgia was home.

“Me, Malcolm Mitchell, Christian Conley, all them boys, we’re going to do some big things. In my recruiting class, we’ve got Derrick Henry and Brice Ramsey. We got a dynasty in the making and I want to be part of it.”

Terry is commitment No. 8 for UGA’s recruiting class – and the first at WR. He also may play DB in college, or both ways.

UGA’s coaches made a big impression on Terry with the way they handled his de-commitment last September. “They didn’t get mad,” he said. “I thought they would be mad. But they weren’t. I had to do what I had to do at the time and look around some more … Coach [Mark Richt] was a happy man when I committed again. He said he wants me as part of his program and he respected the way I handled everything.”

Richt also shared some Biblical wisdom with Terry to help him deal with recruiting. It was one of the Ten Commandments: “Honor thy father and thy mother.”

“He told me to honor my mom and I definitely did that,” Terry said. “I respect my mom, and she wanted us to look around at other schools. It was a good thing because by seeing the other schools, it helped me see that I really wanted to be a Dawg.”

Brice Ramsey also had an influence on Terry’s decision. The two became fast friends at recruiting camps over the years, and Terry actually lived with Ramsey for a few weeks last summer so the two could train together.

Last summer, Terry was on the brink of committing to rival South Carolina, but attended “Dawg Night” prospect camp in July and was one of three 2013 targets to commit to UGA, along with Ramsey and RB Derrick Henry.

When Terry made his original commitment to UGA, he was heavily criticized and taunted on his Facebook page by angry South Carolina and Clemson fans.

“Those are great schools, too, but I can only sign with one school and that’s going to be Georgia,” Terry said. “South Carolina and Clemson people are probably going to be upset again, and I’m pretty sure they’re going to mess with me. When I get to Georgia, they’ll probably say stuff when we play them. It really doesn’t bother me. I’ve already been through all of that once before. I’m just going to ignore it and lay low.”

As a junior, Terry led Goose Creek to the South Carolina Class AAAA Div. II state championship.

  • Here’s ESPN’s Kipp Adams on Tramel Terry: “Once again, the commitment of wide receiver Tramel Terry gives the University of Georgia arguably the top offensive prospect from another state. Last season, the Bulldogs signed runninng backs Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley out of North Carolina and offensive tackle John Theus out of Florida. This year Georgia has already added a commitment from running back Derrick Henry, and adding Terry continues the out of state success for Mark Richt and his staff. Terry is known as one of the more versatile athletes in the country, with over 800 yards rushing and 800 yards receiving as a junior, as well as a couple interceptions while playing defense.  Like Charone Peake in 2011, Terry drew early comparisons to former Palmetto State star A.J. Green, but even Terry will admit his game is different than the 2011 NFL first-rounder Georgia. Terry likens himself closer to Brandon Boykin and possibly Malcolm Mitchell, stating his versatility will provide Georgia with an offensive weapon, and the option to cross-train him on defense if needed. With eight commitments so far, Georgia has already pieced together an outstanding collection of talent, and what really gives them a chance to be special is that seven of the eight commitments currently plan to enroll early.”

I do not have the first inkling as to why this kid did not consider the Institute.

Does he not understand that we have VAD LEE about to start passing around the pill??

Why on earth would he invest his future with Aaron Murray for a year, then Brice Ramsey??

Plus Engineers make ten fold the money a U(sic)GA grad does!!!

@bkbroila, you’re saying there’s 2 more silent commitments? LOLOL. You Dawg fans come up with all kinds of excuses on why your Junior Day was an epic failure. My favorite one from the other day was “At least the recruits saw UGA win in basketball.” LOLOLOLLL what does that have to do with anything??

bkbroila: No they did not. No one out of Delando Crooks, DeVondre Seymour, Josh Cardiello, Montravious Adams, Kelsey Griffin, Antonio Riles, Brendan Langley, Alvin Kamara, Demarre Kitt, Raekwon McMillian, Ben Boulware, Keith Bryant and Krenwick Height committed, silently or publicly.

Stop falling for fake insiders on blogs and realize that these prospects and the college coaches do not talk to random people about recrutiing. All of the Lowndes25’s and socrates of the world do is read all the paysites and make educated guesses based on the latest info made available to them.

UGA will very likely get quite a few commitments from that list, but assuming it has happened already because of a few of our more overzealous fans say it is setting yourself up for disappointment. All they have to do is wait for any of them to commit and they will call them the silents. Its an old trick in recruiting.

I am always guarded in my optimism regarding early commits, but considering Mr. Terry is coming back to the Dawgs after taking time to reconsider I think he is pretty solid. He has a lot of respect for the UGA coaches and especially Coach Richt for the way his decommitment was handled last year. This was one of the big gets that I had heard about from last w/e because he came back to Athens 2 weeks in a row. Terry didn’t commit last weekend because he wanted to prepare his family for the attacks that are coming again with his announcement. The haters are gonna hate, but these coaches know what is at stake and they are working hard.

With all of big name recruits over the last few years, it looks like UGA is recruiting like Bama, without all of the oversigning/greyshirting drama.

Now let’s see if the coaches can get them to perform on the field and bigger things will come. GO DAWGS!!!

But… but… but.. the AJC reported yesterday that UGA didn’t get any commits on VID day. Fact is… more than one kid (including Terry) committed to the coaching staff over the weekend. It’s perfectly reasonable for those kids to talk things over with the parentals before going public. Sounds like more to come… 2013 is shaping up to be a special class. RF and RN are paying attention, I can promise you that.

Richt: “Talk things over with your parents and make the best decision for you and your family.”

Saban: “I’ll only offer a scholarship if you commit right now. Oh, and if I find someone else I like better, or if you get injured… I may change my mind about that scholarship offer. But commit NOW anyway”

When is GT going to get a coach that can recruit and attract players to Tech ? Why can PJ only go after and get the ones that are being offered by MTSU, Elon, Ball State or Memphis—-its really getting ridicoulous. Everytime i read about recruiting its always Georgia getting them, no wonder we will never beat them again. If Richt dosent win a National Championship over the next 5 years, he has to be the worst coach since Terry Holland with Ralph Sampson.

Tech won’t beat UGA because they can’t recruit like UGA. If things keep going the way they’re going, Tech won’t beat UGA for AT LEAST another 5 years. We’ve outrecruited them, we outhit them, we outmuscle them, etc. UGA is just BETTER than Tech. Face it.

Yes eventually Tech will catch UGA slipping and beat them but it won’t be anytime soon. Especially not this season. The game is in Athens, 3rd season under Grantham, offense is in tact, 10 return on defense, etc etc and most of all we’re in their heads. Won’t be pretty.

Dynasty? Isn’t that a bunch of Bi..hy women in love with John Forsyth, diamonds, furs and cars? It was Popular in the 80’s when UGa actually won some football games. I think he should call the team Pretty Little Liars. Closer to the truth than Dynasty.

Are you still “pizzed off”??? You must have gotten pizzed on which would explain your being wet.

Don’t worry about Dawgs and grades. We gonna have a “BIG BROTHER” assigned to EACH recruit who will do all the assignments and testing for these athletes. Some will likely make “The Deans List”.
