South Carolina’s No. 1 overall prospect has committed to UGA for a second time, and this time WR Tramel Terry said he’s sticking to it.
The 6-foot, 180-pound wide receiver from Goose Creek (S.C.) High School picked the Bulldogs over South Carolina and Clemson, among his 20 scholarship offers. Terry is UGA’s best import from South Carolina since AJ Green.
Terry originally committed to UGA on “Dawg Night” last July but backed off the pledge a couple of months later to consider other options. He privately committed again to UGA on a Feb. 24 Junior Day and went public with it on Tuesday.
“I just felt like home at Georgia,” Terry told the AJC. “I de-committed just to look around and see other places where I could get my degree. I felt like I needed to do the smart thing and take my time, so I visited other places like Alabama, Virginia Tech, everywhere … and I felt like Georgia was home.
“Me, Malcolm Mitchell, Christian Conley, all them boys, we’re going to do some big things. In my recruiting class, we’ve got Derrick Henry and Brice Ramsey. We got a dynasty in the making and I want to be part of it.”
Terry is commitment No. 8 for UGA’s recruiting class – and the first at WR. He also may play DB in college, or both ways.
UGA’s coaches made a big impression on Terry with the way they handled his de-commitment last September. “They didn’t get mad,” he said. “I thought they would be mad. But they weren’t. I had to do what I had to do at the time and look around some more … Coach [Mark Richt] was a happy man when I committed again. He said he wants me as part of his program and he respected the way I handled everything.”
Richt also shared some Biblical wisdom with Terry to help him deal with recruiting. It was one of the Ten Commandments: “Honor thy father and thy mother.”
“He told me to honor my mom and I definitely did that,” Terry said. “I respect my mom, and she wanted us to look around at other schools. It was a good thing because by seeing the other schools, it helped me see that I really wanted to be a Dawg.”
Brice Ramsey also had an influence on Terry’s decision. The two became fast friends at recruiting camps over the years, and Terry actually lived with Ramsey for a few weeks last summer so the two could train together.
Last summer, Terry was on the brink of committing to rival South Carolina, but attended “Dawg Night” prospect camp in July and was one of three 2013 targets to commit to UGA, along with Ramsey and RB Derrick Henry.
When Terry made his original commitment to UGA, he was heavily criticized and taunted on his Facebook page by angry South Carolina and Clemson fans.
“Those are great schools, too, but I can only sign with one school and that’s going to be Georgia,” Terry said. “South Carolina and Clemson people are probably going to be upset again, and I’m pretty sure they’re going to mess with me. When I get to Georgia, they’ll probably say stuff when we play them. It really doesn’t bother me. I’ve already been through all of that once before. I’m just going to ignore it and lay low.”
As a junior, Terry led Goose Creek to the South Carolina Class AAAA Div. II state championship.
