Max Garcia: UGA is frontrunner for Maryland OL transfer

UGA is the frontrunner for OL Max Garcia, the former Norcross High School football star who was recently granted a release from Mayland.

The 6-foot-4, 310-pounder told the AJC that he will take official visits to Ole Miss on March 20, UGA on March 23, Florida on March 30 and Clemson at a later date.

“I’d probably say Georgia would be No. 1 because of location … probably Georgia and Florida,” Garcia told the AJC on Tuesday.

Garcia is an NFL prospect who started all 12 games at left tackle for Maryland last year as a sophomore. He both requested and was granted a release by Maryland in order to play closer to home. Garcia will have to sit out next season under NCAA transfer rules and then have two years of eligibility.

UGA’s sales pitch is simple: They’re the SEC school closest to his home, they have an alarming lack of depth for offensive linemen and they have his college major (broadcast journalism, communications or public relations).

“Coach [Mark Richt], Coach Bobo and Coach Friend, I’ve pretty much been talking to all of them,” Garcia said. “Whenever I call, they just pass the phone around.

“They just say they are a good school if I want to go somewhere really close to home. They are 45 minutes away from home, and my family would get to see me play all the time. They have a need for offensive linemen, and they said they could put me in a great situation, as far as that goes. They have one of the top journalism schools in the country that I’m excited about looking at.

“I have a really good feel for Georgia. I like everything they are doing there, and I’ve got to just wait until the visit.

What about Florida? “As far as the tackle position, they could put me there. They don’t have a lot of experience out there. And you know, Gainesville is a just a great place to be. As far as an SEC education, they said they are one of the top two programs. It’s just a beautiful place … great fans, great game-day atmosphere. They seem to be doing great things under Coach [Will Muschamp] and it would be a good situation for me as well.’

It’s just like old times with Clemson, which was one of Garcia’s finalists out of high school, along with Maryland and Vanderbilt. Clemson recently became heavily involved after Maryland coach Randy Edsall changed his mind and lifted the restriction to transfer to another ACC member.

“Yeah, Clemson was actually in my top three the whole time when I was coming out of high school,” Garcia said. “It’s kind of funny that Coach [Dabo Swinney] and the rest of the staff is back on my board. They are like second opportunities. People don’t have many opportunities to go and play football at Clemson two times in their lives. So they want me to go up there for a visit and give them a shot. I know a lot of things about Clemson, as far as their tradition. I took an official visit there in high school, and I met a lot of players. I still know a lot of guys there. They also need some offensive linemen. It’s a great game-day atmosphere and it’s only about an hour and 45 minutes from home.”

Garcia on Ole Miss: “They have a great tradition and great game-day atmosphere as well. I talked to Coach [Hugh Freeze] and he seems like a great guy.”

Florida and Clemson are recruiting Garcia at offensive tackle, while UGA and Ole Miss will figure it out when he gets there. “Wherever a school has a need on the offensive line, I will play. I will play wherever,” he said.

Garcia will take official visits to all four schools and announce his decision within a month. “Probably sometime in late April or mid-April after I’m finished taking my visits. Really, I have all the way up until May or before summer school starts to decide. But I don’t want to wait that long. I want to make up my mind in mid-April so I can start getting my things together, as far as moving and getting the paperwork completed for the transfer.”

Garcia has been overwhelmed with the amount of interest he generated after announcing the Maryland transfer. There have been numerous other schools to express interest but he’s focusing only on four.

“My high school coaches were telling me about all these schools calling about me,” Garcia said. “It started with Georgia and Florida, and I was like ‘Oh yeah, I’m absolutely interested.’ Once those two schools got on board, everybody else just started coming along. Pretty much all the colleges say that I’ve already proven that I could play at the collegiate level. They love my athleticism but I definitely have a long ways to go with my technique. They all love my upside. They also like how next season I can be a red-shirt season to learn the offense and then I’ll have two years to play. It’s kind of like an ideal situation.”

You want an update on Georgia Tech recruiting? Your school is on NCAA probation and does not have a single commitment for next year. End of story.

I think he would count against the 13 class, and sit out a year because of transfer rules, eligible to play in 13 season.

Bama15, Foster has been to Athens and met with CMR more times than the total number of teeth in your extended family. You trolls just don’t get it. With Reuben, there is no more “selling” to be done with either UGA or UA. He just needs to pick where he’s most comfortable. Hence, all the trips to both schools just to hang out.

Mr. Garcia, I’m so glad you don’t have Alabama on your list. I hope you pick the university of Georgia. Coach Richt is a fine Christian man with a lot of honor and integrity. I don’t want to say anything negative about Coach Muschamp but he does look very angry on the sidelines. Coach Muschamp has a bad, bad temper.

I missed something….he is transferring from Maryland why? Because he wants to be closer to home? Think the Ole Miss things pretty much makes Big Max a publicist…Opportunity to go to Clemson Twice Opportunity to go through Recruiting twice might be a better observation…Have a good time big Max….

I just want to go on record this morning that I don’t care about Bama…..who their coach is, their janitor, or any of their fans. If Foster ends up there, great for Bama. If he picks Dawgs, we all know they will say they found someone better. I really don’t care. The only thing I care about Bama for is driving through it going to see family in Hattiesburg, and I try not to stop in Bama.

Alabama doesn’t have him on their list, either.

Richt may be a good man but is an inept coach who has to beg for the scraps that aren’t good enough to be served on Coach Saban’s table, Coach Saban’s CHAMPIONSHIP table, in order to try to save his job.

Between Bama, LSU & even lowly Auburn, Richt has lucked into his last SEC Title.

In my opinion picking up a commitment from Mr. Garcia would be a really big deal considering he will already have 2 years of college classes under his belt and has already been in a college conditioning program and has a year of experience playing against major college competition. He will also have 3 years of eligibility left.

IF Garcia signs with the Dawgs, or any other school for that matter, he won’t “count” against their total # of players who can sign in a given year. Transfers, especially those with two years under their belt, are not part of the equation. He will count against the scholarship limit of 85 though. Basketball, as far as the NCAA is concerned, is a different matter. Which is kind of stupid when one considers there is only 15 players on a basketball roster and only 13 can be on scholarship. If he signs, then good, if not, then so be it. UGA will be fine either way.

Dawg Mom,
Newsflash…this ain’t your little girl’s soccer team and we keep score. This is the SEC and when you are having a bad year, I would expect some anger from a head coach.
Keep your “fine Christian man” and let me know when he wins something of national relevance other than the Fulmer Cup.

Bama Fans,

I can’t wait for the day that Saban decides he is better off somewhere else. I agree that he is a great coach but he doesn’t stick around too long anywhere he goes. AND everyone talks about the smacking that UGA took againest UA in the “blackout” game but UA fans are so easy to forget the year before. Great teams come and go. Right now, UA is a great team but it won’t last forever. When UGA is in the SEC championship game next year againest LSU, you guys will once again be hoping for some kind of upset so the media can have a reason to put you in the NC game again. You had no business being there this year and won’t have any business being there next year but the media is y’alls golden ticket. Enjoy it while it last

Not sure just how good Max Garcia is. After all he played in the ACC for a weak Maryland team. Evidently he regrets passing up an opportunity to go to UGA if they ever offered him. He was rated a 3 star out of high school. He may not be a starter in 2013 when UGA will have more depth and experience on the OL but he can work in to the rotation at guard.

Didn’t a previous article say Garcia wanted to major in journalism or something similar? I don’t see how his first choice could not be UGA. UGA graduates more journalists than Carter has pills.
