Robert Nkemdiche: Good news for UGA with nation’s No. 1 overall prospect

There’s some good news between UGA and Robert Nkemdiche, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 1 overall college football prospect for 2013.

The Bulldogs have cracked the Top 5 for Nkemdiche (pronounced Kim-dee-chee), the 6-foot-5 and 270-pound defensive end from Grayson High School.

“In no particular order, my Top 5 is Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Ole Miss, Clemson … and, um, I like South Carolina, and I’m going to visit Florida and Florida State,” Nkemdiche told the AJC on Sunday night.

Mark Richt has built a good enough relationship with Robert Nkemdiche to now be considered a top contender for the nation's No. 1 prospect (AJC)

Mark Richt has built a good enough relationship in recent weeks with Robert Nkemdiche to now be considered a top contender for the nation's No. 1 prospect (AJC)

Nkemdiche’s next two unofficial visits are scheduled for LSU on March 17 and Vanderbilt on March 24. The 5-star prospect has taken recent tours of Alabama, UGA, Ole Miss and Clemson.

What’s the deal with UGA? The Bulldogs did not make some of Nkemdiche’s more recent Top 5 lists but have been gaining ground since his UGA visit last month. What changed?

“That visit was really the first time I got any one-on-one time with Coach [Mark Richt],” Nkemdiche said. “I went up there, I had a great talk, and we’ve been talking a lot since then. I feel like I have a good relationship with Coach Richt. I think he’s a good man.”

What’s next with UGA? Nkemdiche said he may go watch a spring practice at both UGA and Alabama in April.

“I’ve got good vibes about Georgia,” he said. “I feel like Coach Richt really likes me as a person and a football player, and I really Georgia. It’s close to home and they played good on defense last season.”

Alabama is still considered the school to beat for Nkemdiche. “Alabama is, I mean … Alabama. I feel like they are a winning program. If I picked Alabama, there would be no ‘cons’ about me going there. There are nothing but ‘pros’ about Alabama.”

Clemson is the newest contender for Nkemdiche after he took an unofficial there this weekend. Nkemdiche actually went as the guest of his high school teammate, Grayson DB David Kamara, who is being scouted by Clemson.

“It was great; Coach [Dabo Swinney] is a nice dude,” Nkemdiche said. “All of the coaches are cool. I got to walk down the hill and touch the rock. It was all good. I have a good vibe about Clemson.”

Nkemdiche claims he does not have a favorite school but he did tell the AJC about another thing that may factor into his college decision: He wants to play on the same college football team as Kamara, his best friend since the sixth grade at McConnell Middle School.

Robert Nkemdiche (left) and David Kamara have been best friends since the sixth grade

Robert Nkemdiche (left) and David Kamara have been best friends since the sixth grade

“He’s a real good cornerback, and that’s my closest friend,” Nkemdiche said. “I love hanging out and playing football with David. He’s like my brother. I’m with him all the time. I would like to go to college with him. He’s a good person, and a hard worker on the football field. There are a lot of good things about him. He can help a team.”

Would they be a package deal? Nkemdiche stopped short of declaring that, but said, “Wherever we feel like we can go together and both have an offer from, that will work out for us.”

Nkemdiche has also been mentioned in the past as part of a “package deal” with his brother, Denzel Nkemdiche, who is a freshman DB at Ole Miss. However, Denzel has always been the one to emphasize that it’s the wish of his parents that the two brothers play together in college. Then again, Robert visited Ole Miss last week and gave it a thumbs up.

Who is David Kamara? He’s a speedy and physical cornerback on the defense that propelled Grayson to last season’s Class AAAAA state championship. Kamara is 5-foot-11, 185 pounds and has been clocked in the 40-yard dash at 4.5 seconds. His film (see below) is being evaluated by Clemson, Ole Miss, Maryland, Vanderbilt, UGA and Alabama. He is no relation to Norcross RB Alvin Kamara.

“We’ve been best friends since Robert moved over here from DeKalb in the sixth grade,” Kamara said. “We just hit it off immediately. I guess we both have laid-back personalities and are always laughing. We both went out for football together for the first time in the seventh grade, and we’ve been playing together ever since.”

When asked about a possible “package deal,” Kamara responded, “We talk about playing together in college. That would be cool and all if it worked out. I mean, it would be a dream. I just know wherever I go to college, I’m going to do whatever it takes to get on the field.”

Good lord, if Richt doesn’t get out there and get on the ball with Kamara we could be hurting our chances. It worked with Harrow and Crowell, and heck, Harrow has become quite the big hitter on special teams. 4.5 isn’t blazing for a corner or return man but he’s young. Hopefully Gardner, Grantham, Bobo, and Richt are frequenting the AJC blogs….

4.5 is fast enough and Kamara has good size but can he cover and tackle college WR’s? That said, UGA, Bama & anyone else in the SEC would take Kamara to get Nkemdiche – providing he qualifies.

Keenan Allen tried the ‘package” deal only routine with Coach Saban and got scrubbed . Ended up playing out West . If the young man at DB is good enough in his own right I could see him getting an offer .

The No. 1 prospect in the nation is certainly enjoying the media attention he is getting. The way he talks about where this and that school is on his list may be o.k. with some folks. My take on a high school iith grader who responds to the status as No.1 recruit is: beware, he may require a special helment be made to fit his head and
he will be full of himself by signing day

1st of all, PLEASE STOP listing this boy in your articles as 6′-5″ 270lbs. I see this boy everyday and he is 6′-3″ 240lbs. Next, with the way that he is [and has been] absorbing this attention, I hope and pray that he has a intervention with reality. His behavior on the field and practices has become increasingly lazy. He does not perform on the field the way that it is reported. There were MANY competitors who shut him down all season. His STATS were altered. For those of you who can read the Gwinnett Daily Post or MAXPREPS, his numbers were reported, along with his teammates, on a weekly basis, and they were sub-par. Then amazingly, his numbers shot through the roof in the last week of reporting stats. He went from 7 sacks to 22 sacks?! PLEASE STOP!!! If he is truly as good [and as big] as you would have us believe, then report the truth and let him shine for what is ACTUALLY is – a high school player with potential to play D-1 ball.

@ Stinger2….my point exactly….he IS already full of himself. This is why he worked lazily during last season; he didn’t think he needed it because he was going to be #1. It showed on the field. Don’t get me wrong, ther were some games where he dominated because his opponents were much smaller or inexperienced. But against an opponent his size and/or more experienced, he looked like the average high school player. Remember: when he enters college, all linemen are bigger, stronger and better equipped than a high school opponent.

The cons for Alabama is the character of Saban. When you sign with Saban, he will effective cut one of his other commitments. His word is not worth the paper it is written on.

Nkemdiche is saying that he likes Mark Richt and UGA’s defense but the Dawgs still aren’t winning enough to suit him. Alabama is obviously in the lead with LSU second and right now UGA is 3rd. After he goes to Florida that might change. Nkemdiche isn’t going to commit any time soon and this could go all the way to signing day. He knows Bama will “make room”for him. The only chance UGA has is to WIN big this season. They must win the SEC, as they will likely be playing LSU or Bama if they get that far. He would like for his brother and Kamara. For that to happen he would have to go to Ole Miss (not going to happen) or his brother will have to sit out and transfer to where he decides to go. That probably won’t happen either.

Reimbursement proposal:

For any student that selects an out of state university, that university or the NCAA must refund to the state the total combined taxes paid by the state’s tax payers to fund said athletes k-12 education.

Yes, I know it works both way,s but this is all really about money so it’s time to pay up for our Georgia talent that’s going out of state and making that state or institution money at the Georgia taxpayer’s expense.

So, if Alabama wants Nkemdiche, let them pay for it!

Corndog- Look at the trends. Who is trending up (SC) and who is trending down (UGA). SC has NO history, but doing pretty well in the present. SC has surpassed UGA.
Grinch, SC beat every team in the East last year. Has UGA ever beat every team in the East in the same year? SC is better than UGA at present.
I am a young man and I have seen every SC bowl victory in my life time. I have looked at stats for last 20-21 yrs, going back to when SC joined SEC, and UGA is not nearly as dominate over the last 20 yrs as over the series history. Now just look at the last 5 yrs- 3 victories for SC and 2 in a row and headed to 3 in a row.

If Robert wants to play NEXT to the Jadaveon Clowney (aka Julious Peppers), he should come to SCAR. If he wants to be a top 10 NFL pick like Melvin Ingram, he should come to SCAR. If he wants to play on a top 10 D in the nation (top 3 in SEC), then he should come to SCAR. If Robert wants to play for a HALL OF FAME coach, he should come to SCAR.

Robert – Watch SCAR DEs next season. Top DE duo in the country between Clowney and Devin Taylor.

My comment was directed at the poster who said, about USCe, “…we dominate the SEC East,…”.

You follow that with “SC beat every team in the East last year”. So SC did that once. How does that make SC a dominant program? Has SC ever WON the SEC?

Many SC fans trash the GA program and then boast “we won the past two”. If, as you and other claim, UGA is a down program then how does 2 in a row improve your resume.

WIN the SEC just once and then get back to us. It won’t qualify as SC being “dominant”, but it will at least prop us the SC resume.

NICK SABAN IS A CHAMPIONSHIP COACH—-ALMOST A GOD LIKE FIGURE. THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA DOES NOT “DREAM” ABOUT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS THEY WIN THEM! 14 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES! SABAN HAS THREE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES NOW. THIS KID WOULD BE A STUD ON CAMPUS AT ALABAMA! A GREAT FIT THERE!

LSU AND LES MILES IS ALSO A CHAMPIONSHIP COACH AT A CHAMPIONSHIP PROGRAM. JOHN CHAVIS IS LIKELY “THE BEST” DEFENSIVE COACH IN THE COUNTRY—EVEN BETTER THAN KIRBY BECAUSE HE HAS A PROVEN LONGER TRACK RECORD—–HE WAS SENSATIONAL AT TENNESSEE TOO!

FLORIDA AND SOUTH CAROLINA WOULD BE VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN DOWN AS WELL. SPURRIER CAN FLAT OUT COACH AND FLORIDA IS RECRUITING VERY WELL TOO.

TENNESSEE IS RISING AGAIN AND HE WILL LIKELY VISIT THE VOLS WHERE PEYTON MANNING WAS A STUD.

I DON’T THINK UGA WILL GET THIS KID. HE WILL BE RESPECTFUL THOUGH. I PREDICT HE JOINS ALABAMA AND SABAN AND WINS AT LEAST TWO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS!

Just goes to show that even at schools with equal or BETTER ACADEMICS than GT you have some HCs that love to RECRUIT and are out-working our own Coach Kung Fu Panda when it comes to pursuing top Recruits here in the State of Ga.

You can make excuses when UGA or Bama out recruits you, but you cannot make excuses anymore when schools like STANFORD & VANDY have HCs (Shaw, Harbaugh, & Franklin) that are OUT-WORKING you on the Recruiting trails here in your own home State.

No excuse for CPJ being out-worked when it comes to Recruiting in your own back-yard.

If GT can bring in Marbury & Kenny Anderson, and Vandy can go after Nkemdiche, then GT should be after Nkemdiche also!

No excuses for another HC out-working you when it comes to Recruiting!

How many times must he and his parents stress to you delusional Georgia fans that his parents are quite serious about their boys playing on the same team and more importantly, attending the same university. Life exists outside of football for all athletes and to be separated from his close relationship that exists between he and his brother would be something difficult for Robert to envision. Clearly, Alabama is the team to beat here considering their rebirth under Saban and Tuscaloosa’s close proximity to Oxford and Robert’s brother. That being said, I think you have to realize that his parent’s wishes for him to be at Ole Miss are a serious desire and that Hugh Freeze might just be one of the best recruiters in the game after serving as Ed Orgeron’s recruiting coordinator. This is the man that recruited Mike Wallace, Shay Hodge, Micheal Oher, Dexter McCluster, etc all to Ole Miss. Naturally, I’m slightly biased, but after speaking with him at an Ole Miss Baseball game, I must say that he has the Rebels not far behind the Crimson Tide. Add the fact that he would see immediate playing time for the Red & Blue with his brother, and you have a two team race that Mark Richt and Georgia has decidedly appeared entirely too late in which to compete. Btw, Oe Miss co-eds are by far our best recruitment tool. Hotty Toddy y’all…
