UGA gears up to entertain top juniors for V.I.D. day – “Very Important Dawg”

Mark Richt

Mark Richt is off to a good start with 7 commits for UGA's 2013 recruiting class. The Bulldogs are hoping to build some huge momentum by having high-profile targets commit on Saturday's V.I.D. day (AJC)

UGA will have its biggest Junior Day of the winter on Saturday, and Mark Richt says the Bulldogs are recruiting earlier than ever.

“Yes, we’re recruiting earlier this year,” Richt told the AJC. “I think we’re doing a very good job of getting the film evaluated and making decisions. You’ve got to. You’ve got to do that, and we’re making sure we’re taking care of business that way.”

UGA’s Junior Day on Saturday has been dubbed “V.I.D.” day for “Very Important Dawg.” We forgot to ask Richt who came up with the nickname. Junior days are designated days to invite top high school juniors to make an unofficial visit to your campus with the hopes of getting a few of them to commit while they’re there.

Some of the top UGA targets scheduled to attend V.I.D. are Buford OL Josh Cardiello, Carver-Atlanta OL Delando Crooks, Tri-Cities OL Jeremi Hall, Jackson DT Jay Woods, Kell DB Brendan Langley, Dooly County DT Montravius Adams, and probably Mill Creek DT Kelsey Giffin. (ML King OL Josh Outlaw will visit Friday)

UGA has seven commits for 2013, and among those expected on Saturday’s V.I.D. are team’s newest recruit (Northgate NG “Moose Johnson), Yulee (Fla.) RB Derrick Henry, Camden County QB Brice Ramsey, Newnan S Tray Matthews and Sandy Creek DB Shaq Wiggins.

The state of Georgia produces around 175-185 D1 football signees on an annual basis. Out-of-state schools such as Alabama and South Carolina are making concentrated efforts to raid Georgia, and try to gain an advantage by offering in-state kids scholarships long before UGA and Georgia Tech. It has put a lot of pressure on the Bulldogs and Yellow Jackets.

“There are a lot of people hitting Georgia, probably harder than ever,” Richt said. “It sure seems a lot more than when I first got to UGA. Unfortunately, I think one of the best-kept secrets is out. There are great players in this state and people know it. Not only is it the usual suspects, the schools that basically are touching the state of Georgia, but now you have people from up North and the West coast. There’s a lot of interest from everywhere. There’s recruiters from Texas A&M and Missouri all over Georgia, too. There’s just more colleges coming to Georgia.”

UGA fans have high expectations for Saturday’s V.I.D. day after the gigantic successes of rival SEC schools. For example, Florida landed six commitments on its heralded Junior Day a couple of weeks ago.

Now it’s YOUR turn: What are your predictions for V.I.D.? How many prospects do you think will commit? What is the most important position for UGA to get a commitment at?

UGA commits for 2013

  1. RB Derrick Henry, 6-3, 241, Yulee, Fla.
  2. QB Brice Ramsey, 6-3, 190, Camden County HS
  3. S Tray Matthews, 6-2, 205, Newnan HS
  4. DB Shaq Wiggins, 5-10, 160, Sandy Creek HS
  5. DB Steven Nelson, 6-0, 185, College of Sequoias JC (Northside-WR HS)
  6. DT Chris Mayes, 6-4, 295, Mississippi Gulf Coast JC (Spalding HS)
  7. DT DeAndre “Moose” Johnson, 6-3, 311, Northgate HS

NOTES: Stone Mountain senior DL Micah “Snacks” Anderson (6-4, 350) has committed to Central Florida, according to Pirates assistant Jatavis Sanders. Stone Mountain ATH Fred Scott signed with Johnson C. Smith, while WR Tamarick Johnson (defending state champion in the 200 and 400 meters) signed with Jackson State … Camden County junior OL JP Vonashek (6-6, 255) got his first offer on Thursday night from North Carolina, while Ole Miss could be next.

This “aw shucks” mentality of Richt is getting old. Is he really that slow? Or Sandbagging?

Will Mark Richt bother to show up for this Junior Day? He was MIA last week when the #2 prospect in nation Reuben Foster was in Athens. Quit making excuses my fellow Dawgs because there’s no excuse for that. That was embarrassing. If can get at least 3 commits this weekend, all will be forgiven.

Richt’s got some impressive looking players committed already. UGA is recruiting right to their strength — Coach Grantham. He’s making a big difference.
The Big Question for UGA’s 2013 Recruiting Class — Do they land one, both or neither of the TOP 2 ranked Players in the Country, both from Georgia.

The reason 2013 recruit’s are so important is as soon as you get near the 25 to 28 needed for 2013 the coaches then can concentrate on 2014. That’s why Saban has been kicking butt in Georgia because he is a year ahead of Richt and crew in recruiting. McGarity realizes this and will keep the pressure on Richt. The best way to get recruit’s standing in line to come to Georgia is to WIN football game’s.

Valley boy 32,

I think it is safe to say, that a lot of SEC coaches from other states try and recruit players from Georgia. UGA recruits player from Florida as well. D. Henry is from Florida and is a verbal commit to UGA. Murray is from Florida as was Orson Charles. Our two top running backs for 2012 were from North Carolina. Ben Jones was from Alabama. UGA has offers out to 11 players from Florida right now. We also have a few offers out from people in South Carolina. The only state I haven’t seen in the 90 offers yet, that is close to us is Alabama. Big time college programs try to get the best players available, no matter where the kid was born and raised.

Before this blog gets too far down the track please just stop with all the MIA talk about where CMR was last w/e. He wasn’t MIA, he was exactly where any REAL man would have been. “Yes, we’re recruiting earlier this year,”

This is the sign of a man on his first job who is being enabled despite the mistakes and the missteps. 11 years in the same seat and he is just now catching the early recruiting trend. I only say this as a critique, not a criticism. Us rational Dawg fans must be realistic about the status of this program and it is not National caliber at the moment. It may be getting there, but shouldn’t Georgia already be there? Boise St. is.

Look at it this way: What does UGA lose if neither Nkemdiche or Foster sign? Absolutely nothing. There are teams in college littered with pro talent that never win conference or national titles for one reason or another. It’s not like UGA really needs them at their respective positions. This isn’t the NFL where there is a one shot chance in a draft system and there are only 31 other teams to compete against. There are plenty of other good to great players to find. Make Jordan Jenkins the next Rueben Foster. Develop already talented players into beasts on the field of play. Everything else will take care of itself.

“UGA fans have high expectations for Saturday’s V.I.D. day after the gigantic successes of rival SEC schools. For example, Florida landed six commitments on its heralded Junior Day a couple of weeks ago.”

How highly rated are Florida’s commitments and will they stick around for signing day? I thought Florida was a shambles.

UGa will take time to teach their current commits how to properly steal hashbrowns this weekend as part of Richt’s Football to Felons Program. I think that is great foresight by the UGa staff.

UGa is the Clemson of the SEC. As long as Richt is there, it will continue to be the same old UGa….

Robert Nkemdiche @ 7:43AM,

That has got to be one of the dumbest post I have seen come from someone trying to cut down UGA yet. I suppose you think the young lady involved, was trying out for line backer or something. At least, and this may be a stretch, try to post intelligent or something close to it, negative comments that actually make sense.

Well, I believe there is more trolls on here than dawg fans or else the same Tech fan posting under different names.

The list for this weekend is VERY impressive. Henry, Matthews, Wiggins and Ramsey are the best recruiters we have right now. Everyone should expect some commits this weekend because unless they change their mind, the cat is out of the bag on a couple commits. Recruiting services have also said UGA should see a bump in the rankings so they must know something as well. But, as always, recruiting is fluid.

Brown dog, sorry, but Foster isn’t staying at bama for his entire trip either.

For anyone on here to talk about Richt not being in Athens last week, either you are ignorant or total trash. Family comes first.

John Theus, Keith Marshall, and Josh Harvey-Clemons were each rated in the top 20 in the nation by various services in this past class. It will be awesome if we sign 4 of the top 20 this year. We already have Henry, and have a better chance than Bama wants to admit to get the top two. The 3rd best player in the country, Tunsil is very high on the Dawgs as well. I believe, imo, that Brice Ramsey when all is said and done will be near if not in the top 20 also.

Go Dawgs!

A question to the obnoxious Alabama fans that can’t help themselves from posting their obnoxious posts here. Since GA is such an irrelevant school in your eyes, why are you so obsessed with our program? Does Alabama not have their own blogs? And why do you guys hate Richt so much anyway, if you think he is such a terrible coach, seems to me like you should want him to stay. It would be ironic in the future if you guys got your wish and Rich was fired and GA hired Smart wouldn’t it (I hope that does not happen, because Smart does not have the character or class of Richt). You had better be careful what you hope for.

@ NORTHGA, you know the answer to this. First, some of these ‘bama’ fans aren’t bama fans, it’s other schools hiding behind the tide flag. Second, the ones that are bama fans on here do not have anything else to do in their lives, they took away their pesticides.
