REACTION: Nick Saban “happy” to offer four-year football scholarships

Nick Saban created a national stir in recruiting circles this week when he said Alabama was going to offer four-year football scholarships, adding “and we’re happy to do it.”

Nick Saban created a national stir this week when he said Alabama was going to offer four-year football scholarships, adding “and we’re happy to do it.”

Here was some of the serious and funny reaction to Saban’s public declaration from the Twitterverse and around the Internet:
Oversigning.com on Twitter: “The bottom line is that Saban was against the 4-year scholarships and is only giving them out because he has to in order to not lose recruits.”
AJC’s Jeff Schultz on Twitter: “Nick Saban guaranteeing four-year scholarships means only 1 thing: He’ll be back in the NFL in 2 years.”
AuburnSports.com’s Justin Hokanson on Twitter: “Nick Saban now to offer four-year schollies. Days after ‘Bama commit visits [Auburn], says he prefers [Auburn] philosophy of giving four-year schollies.”
MrSEC.com’s John Pennington: “Other coaches have been outspoken against the multi-year scholarship idea.  Tennessee’s Derek Dooley voiced concerns last week.  South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier called the idea a bad one last year at SEC Media Days.  Overall, four schools — Alabama, LSU, Tennessee and Texas A&M — voted to override the multi-year scholarship rule but they were ultimately voted down … Now those coaches and schools will have to offer four-year deals or else fall behind in recruiting to schools that do offer such pacts.  So whether Saban, Dooley, Spurrier and others really like the rule or not… they’ll all soon be buying in and abiding by it.  Saban’s just the first to say so.”
EveryDayShouldBeSaturday.com on Twitter: “Nick Saban never said he wasn’t counting those four year scholarships in dog years. #genius #ROLLTIDE”Nick Saban created a national stir this week when he said Alabama was going to offer four-year football scholarships, adding “and we’re happy to do it.”

Saban also said that “We don’t cut players. I don’t know anyone who does. So I don’t think that’s an issue … The player will still have to be academically eligible. He will still have to obey team rules and regulations. And the player is still going to have the same rights and the same appeals process that he has now.”

Here was some of the reaction (some serious, some funny) to Saban’s public declaration from the Twitterverse and around the Internet:

  • Oversigning.com on Twitter: “The bottom line is that Saban was against the 4-year scholarships and is only giving them out because he has to in order to not lose recruits.”
  • AJC’s Jeff Schultz on Twitter: “Nick Saban guaranteeing four-year scholarships means only 1 thing: He’ll be back in the NFL in 2 years.”

  • CBSSports.com’s Jerry Hinnen: “Saban is entirely correct that just because School X has committed its four-year promise in writing doesn’t mean Player Y is going to be able to skate through four years of school without worrying about the consequences. (He’s also right that this could conceivably lead to some legal appeals here and there.) But given the ease with which schools have dismissed players on one-year scholarships in the past — it’s surprising to hear Saban say he “doesn’t know anyone” who cuts players, given that SEC West rival Bobby Petrino declined to renew the scholarships of five different players just last year — we disagree that nothing has changed.”
  • CapstoneReport.com: “There is a long list of rules and plans to unseat Nick Saban as the king of college football recruiting. Have any of those plans slowed Saban down? Remember the Saban Rule? He just used technology to get more face time with recruits. The sad thing is that a four-year scholarship won’t hurt established programs like Alabama. This four-year plan will harm teams with the greatest need to do roster management, ie: teams not named Alabama and LSU … These plans only serve to make coaches like Nick Saban more valuable. Saban is his own brand with enormous name recognition among recruits. Recruits know that Saban is a path to the NFL—for confirmation just look at the NFL draft. Saban has stockpiled some of the best talent in the nation and separated himself by winning three BCS crowns. He works harder, and more importantly, smarter than his rivals.”
  • EveryDayShouldBeSaturday.com on Twitter: “Nick Saban never said he wasn’t counting those four year scholarships in dog years. #genius #ROLLTIDE”

It’s great to see Coach Saban to finally show some honesty and integrity like Coach Richt, who is an outstanding Christian and football coach. I’m glad that Coach Saban is seeing things “the Georgia way.”

Oversigning.com…. a website who uses a deceased player to support it’s one sided agenda. The use of this website for any purpose speaks to your values.

Schultz…. lacks a rudimentary understanding of college football. Can’t recall the last time he was right about anything.

Justin Hokanson…. Aubarn hack who has become the face of barn recruiting after J. Lee made false accusations in public regarding Bama’s recruitment of Brent Calloway. Hokanson is tired of watching Saban kick the barn in the teeth for the elite prospects in and around Alabama. It sounds as though he felt the combination of 4 year schollys and negative recruiting regarding injuries would be enough for the barn to even the playing field. Should just stick with buying players.

In other news:

Rueben Foster was on campus at Alabama yesterday. Unlike last weekend when CMR was out of town with family, Saban and Kirby Smart sat next to Foster for the entire basketball game last night.

@Blackout, yesterday you Bammers were complaining on these very same message boards about the AJC not reporting the positive news about Saban offering four year schollies and then today yall are complaining? Too funny but all too typical of Bammers

There really should not be a reaction. He is just simply keeping up with the current recruiting trends. Players and parents are more informed and more savvy than in the past. Every person in the country knows Bama and other schools “cuts” certain players, and it has nothing to do with injuries, grades, discipline, etc, etc. But it’s his roster and he can manage it anyway he pleases. So buyer beware. So the 4 year scholly is the counter to school’s like Bama. So why not counter the counter-move? It remains to be seen whether the SEC will create a standard 4 year scholly offer to be followed “to the letter” by all schools and allow the schools to add fine print. Or allow the schools to make up their own contracts (which would be a mess). Or just make one standard, no fine print added later (which will provide more conformity).

Honestly dude, it’s a newspaper reporting, guess what,…. news. DUH!!! So when the AJC ignores Alabama, the paper is a piece of crap for not salivating at all things great about the Univ. of Alabama. But when they actually report something, and it’s not at all negative, then everybody is jealous. If the AJC never reported what Saban said about 4 years scholarship deals, then all the ignorant unwashed masses of Bama fans would have came on this blog and sang loud and clear,”See, Saban is down with 4 year scholarships, but your biased paper didn’t report that, cause they hate Saban sooo much, blah blah blah…” And what exactly does the University of Georgia and the Georgia Institute of Technology have to be jealous of concerning the University of Alabama exactly? Some damn football trophies? Get a life turd.

Saban sounds like the friend we all have had who get dumped by a girlfriend. When you ask him if it was her idea or his and he answers well it was hers at first but after she dumped me I jumped on board and thought it was a good idea. In theory this should make it harder for Saban, Petrino, Spurrier, etc. to execute their “roster management” plans but I am sure they already have contigency plans in place. For instance, if you are a “benchwarmer” a parking ticket on campus, jaywalking, spitting on the sidewalk, and holding hands with a girl are now examples of team rule violations that are punishable with loss of your scholarship.

Some pretty funny comments in the article. And they are right, Saban is just saving face so he doesn’t fall behind in recruiting. But in reality nothing is going to change. A player can still be removed if he’s not obeying the rules.

Rueben Foster told Saban and Smart that Tray Matthews would be flipping to Alabama soon. He asked if they wanted a certain Defensive Back to come also. Seems that Mark Richt has become the problem with many signing with Georgia. Recruits know that if Mark Richt is given an extension, Todd Grantham will be leaving after 2012. Answer to the problem: Good bye Mark Richt

College football needs 4-year athletic scholarships and an early signing period, both of which would help spread the talent around and minimize oversigning abuses.

I will try to make it very simple. UAT = football factory with fans of the lowest common denominator. While a simplification, the state of Alabama in general and UAT in particular would benefit from a UAT death penalty. It is no wonder that Tim Cook the President/CEO of Apple (the world’s most highly valued business) is an Auburn grad and not UAT. I do not want my son or daughter to be associated with Harvey Updyke and UAT!

GIVE ME A BREAK BREAK, HE PROBABLY SAID IT WITHA STRAIGHT FACE.

All these series of rule changes lead directly to 2-3 coaches in SEC, primarily The Snake Petrino and Little Tricky Nick.

Next year when schollys go to 80 and all signees count count against the 80, excepting NCAA approved disicipline and injuries, that to will be directly a Saban rule. With that rosters will be managed equitably by all schools.

Lakedawg how silly:

Saban and Alabama dominate because they work harder and smarter than any other coaching staff.
Now you want smarter and harder work to be punished with new rules hoping it will reduce things to the very poor level of mark richt and georgia staff who do not working hard.

Instead of pulling Alabama down to UGA levels, why not DEMAND UGA raise their levels to Alabama’s

I know 17-18 yr olds aren’t the sharpest tools in the shed at their ages, but the trashing of Richt for attending to a family matter instead of being at the BBall game with Foster may backfire. Some of these kids may read it for what it is, that to CMR and some other non Alabama residents, there are more important issues to deal with in life than wins and losses. Reuben Foster and others may interpret this as CMR showing that some traits such as being a man of your word, loyalty to your friends(players) and family are more important than wins and losses. CMR ought to give all of them the Norman Dale speech to Jimmy from Hoosiers.

Bad Idea.

For those of us against this Rule — We will be proven right in 5 – 6 – 7 years from now. Too much power/control for 18, 19 year olds. Don’t blame me, when your favorite teams players are lazy, not going to class, breaking the law. This Rule will breed content!
Paying College Players is a Bad Idea.
College Football has thrived for over a Century with 1 year renewable Scholarships. The Change was not necessary.
The SEC is again being forced to look bad at the hands of the BIG 10 — who have openly campaigned for 4 year scholly’s across the Board! The Big 10 is after the SEC. We have embarrassed them Nationally for the last decade. Over-signing, Roster limits & 4 year scholly’s are all ploys by the Big 10 to weaken the SEC.
I’m on record Mar 1, 2012 — BAD RULE…… and don’t give me whats in the best interest of the “kids” BS… These players everywhere across the Country have it great already!

….and Congrats to Coach Grant & the Alabama Men’s Basketball Team — Tourney bound! No way we get hosed by the Committee this year.

Can the AJC add a Bama section to their sports section? I see a lot of Alabama articles here. It would expect it to be colored green however.

Not sure how many people realize that the conditions of a 4 year scholarship are the same as the 1 year renewable. When kids do not maintain their grades and do no obey team rules and regulations, they will be dismissed. Of course, some use the word “cut” out of ignorance but a 4 year will be the same as 1 year renewable. Nothing to see here, just move along..
