Nick Saban to UGA recruit: “I’ll offer, if you commit … TODAY”

Alabama’s Nick Saban tried to steal one of UGA’s top recruits.

DB Shaq Wiggins, who committed to UGA a couple of weeks ago, rode with a couple of his Sandy Creek High School teammates for an unofficial visit to Alabama last Thursday. Wiggins got called into Saban’s office.

“Coach Saban was describing my highlight film and talking about he hadn’t seen a cornerback with cover skills like mine in a long time,” Wiggins told the AJC on Sunday night.

“It was a great conversation, and right at the end he said ‘I’ll offer you a scholarship to Alabama if you commit … today.’ Then he paused, waiting for a response. He took me by surprise by saying all of that.”

“Then we started talking again, and I just kind of told him that I was honored but I’m staying with Georgia. And it was an honor. That was Nick Saban, and that will probably be a conversation that I will never forget.”

[Note: It was an ingenious recruiting approach by Saban. If Wiggins takes the deal, Saban wins one of Mark Richt's recruits in Hollywood fashion. If Wiggins declines (which he did), then technically Alabama never offered]

Saban isn’t the only coach trying to steal Wiggins away from UGA. After pledging to the Bulldogs, Wiggins was offered by Vanderbilt, South Carolina and Clemson — as if he never committed. However, that’s common with top prospects, to be recruited by competing schools until the paperwork is signed. This is not Big Ten territory.

“I don’t know what the deal is with all the offers after I committed to Georgia,” Wiggins said with a laugh. “When the colleges come up to my high school, they ask me ‘Are you with Georgia?’ My response is ‘I’m 100 percent with Georgia’ and then they’re like ‘We’re still going to put an offer on the table.’ I guess it’s a good thing, and I appreciate the offers, but I’m going to Georgia.”

UGA DB Shaq Wiggins on Saban: "That will probably be a conversation that I will never forget.” (AJC)

Wiggins, with his outgoing and charismatic personality, may be UGA’s most important recruiter over the next year – sort of like Ray Drew was with the “Dream Team” class. He worked hard to speak on behalf of the Bulldogs to other UGA targets such as LB Reuben Foster, RB Alvin Kamara and WR Tramel Terry at Saturday’s Junior Day.

Foster, who is committed to Alabama but flirting with UGA coaches who are trying to steal him away, got excited when Bulldogs fans chanted his name at Saturday’s basketball game. “He really liked that,” Wiggins said. “I think Georgia’s coaches also did a good job with the recruits there with getting it into their heads that Georgia is a good place to be.”

Unfortunately for UGA, Mark Richt was not available to meet Foster or the other star-studded recruits in person because he reportedly out of town for family reasons.

Back to Wiggins: He plans to return to UGA for another Junior Day this Saturday. The Bulldogs and Georgia Tech are duking it out” for one of the state’s top offensive linemen.

Interesting article. I wonder why no follow up with Rueben Foster. So instead of posting an article on UGA’s failure with the #2 overall player we get an article on a kid who doesn’t even have a legit offer by Bama. UGA fans you had to love reading CMR was out of town with family. Who goes on vacation and misses junior day? LOL whatever you guys are paying him…. your not getting your moneys worth.

I love it. Saban got dissed by Shaq. See, the little Hitler doesn’t get everyone he wants. It will be funny if Shaq persuades Foster to come to UGA with him because I hear they are good friends. Maybe that’s why Saban was trying to lock Shaq up. Then he wouldn’t have to worry.

Wiggins knows an offer from Saban is meaningless. An injury or a better prospect comes along and Saban will drop him in a minute. Spurrier, in an interview, stated that he agreed with Saban that if a better prospect comes along make room for him. Recruits are paying attention now and realize that Saban has no loyalty to the players. Foster is looking for a back up plan and UGA is it. It’s a long time to signing day and Foster is listening and starting to think about options.

EVOO, that’s funny. Bring up every sport along with football because we know that Tech can’t compete at all in football with UGA and that’s the only sport anyone really cares about. How about making that 1-11 in football alone the last 12 seasons. No, Tech will NEVER run this state.

No parent should ever trust anything Saban says. His character is his character. It won’t change. He will continue to offer way more scholarships than he is able to honor. He has a oversigning rule named for him.

Saban needs to look in his own back yard for a few recruits, he is not going to get some very talented guys that may go to Auburn and Tenn. I guess he knows that everybody in Ala. knos what kind of A__ he is when it comes to recruiting in his home state!

Mr. SEC

The problem is that the state of Alabama produces no where near the D-1 talent that the state of the Georgia produces. The state of Georgia is easily in the top 4 or 5 in the USA in terms of producing D-1 talent. Other surrounding states such as Tennessee and South Carolina are in the same boat as the state of Alabama. That’s why those schools try to recruit the state of Georgia so hard–they must supplement their relative lack of in-state talent and they know that UGA and GT can’t legally sign all of the 100+ D-1 recruits the state of Georgia produces each year.

I hope Richt stays in Athens forever! Will continue to rack up BCS titles and you can continue playing second fiddle in your own state.
As far as Saban pulling scholarships, his job is to get the best he can. He does that and then he makes them better. Four first rounders last year and most likely four more this year. Yea, these recruits are paying attention. That is why their coming to Alabama!

Saban is the B.S. King. That’s what’s wrong with Saban. His best interest is winning and he could care less about what happens to a recruit who is a human being that deserves more respect and honesty than he will get from King Saban. You can trust to do one thing – look after Lucius. Buyer beware when you deal with Lucius. He coughs up more B.S. than a 5 ton tumble bug can roll down hill. Rolllllllllllll Tumble Bugggggg!

It’s amazing how facts tend to fade when presented to the Grayshirt U (aka O Bama U) fans. I’m sure you all want to forget that LSU kicked your sorry tails out of the SEC East and SEC Championship causing widespread panic amongst trailer dwellers everywhere. But they finally got politics, crying and sucking up rolling and snuck in the back door of the MNC game.

Yes Virginia, I’m talking about UGA getting kicked by an All American DB in the SEC East while Grayshirt U(aka O Bama U) missed all the playoffs in The SEC because the LSU kicker(Not an All American kicker, just your average everyday sandlot kicker) put y’alls sorry butts on the sideline during ALL SEC playoff games. I guess enough crying and sucking up can get an UNQUALIFIED team into the MNC game…………if you want to stoop that low.

Everyone of you know that the field goal kicker that shut up the entire pack of you was the LSU kicker. The Great Tide did not even score a TD. Can you say LSU 9 Saban’s Losers 6??? Anybody else really watch the game??? I believe(correct me if I’m wrong) that the Tide Tucked Tail and hid out in Tuscaloser for several weeks(We really enjoyed the quiet and sanity on here during that period)

Preach it RTR — it doesn’t matter how many 4 or 5 star players you get if ya can’t do anything with them.
I’ll take Saban’s track record of turning 3 star players into All-American’s :
-Cody
-Dareus
-Ingram
-M.Johnson
-Vlachos
-Arenas
—- All 3 star recruits that didn’t become good players — they became All-American’s & National Champions!

This isn’t day care! It’s college football! It’s a business and Saban gets paid a lot of money to win. If these kids don’t like it, they can go elsewhere. However, if they are good enough and want to get better, play for titles, and have a better chance of being a first round pick. They will play for

So, you can bitch and moan all you want. There maybe five colleges in America who wouldn’t want
Saban coaching their school and I don’t think UGA is one of them.

Brainiac(Dawg for life/Richt fan for life)….. Alabama – 2011 College Football National Champions. Feels goood!!! Regardless of the obscure scores you post, that won’t change who won the title. Consider yourself lucky you played LSU in the title game. We would not have taken the first half off like LSU did and hat score would have been bad! However, our walk-ons would have gotten some good PT. Did you think that LSU would be able to sleep walk through the first half and still put up 40 + points on your spectacular defense? Remind me again….who won the National Championship last year?
