Mark Richt and UGA Junior Day: “We’re always recruiting, brother”

“Are you finished with recruiting?”

When we asked UGA’s Mark Richt that question recently, we were actually talking about the Class of 2012 – if he planned any late additions after signing only 19 earlier this month.

Richt, however, took it to mean the Class of 2013, which would be high school juniors.

“We’re always recruiting, brother,” Richt told the AJC.

“We’re always recruiting. As a matter of fact, I’ll tell you, when signing day hits, you think you’re going to get a break from it. But you really don’t. It intensifies for the next year. There are so many things happening for us right now for 2013. It’s a very, very busy time for us right now.”

Mark Richt made sure it was heard loud and clear this week, saying "UGA will sign another RB for 2013" to Norcross RB Alvin Kamara (AP)

Mark Richt made sure it was heard loud and clear this week, saying "UGA will sign another RB for 2013" to Norcross RB Alvin Kamara (AP)

UGA will entertain some of the state’s top juniors this weekend — one of several “Junior Day’s” coming up for the Bulldogs:

It’s a group that’s small on size, but big on star power.

The biggest name who told the AJC he’ll be there is Troup LB Reuben Foster, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 2 overall prospect by 247sports.com. Foster is committed to Alabama but still openly flirting with UGA.

Some of the others expected:

  • WR Tramel Terry of Goose Creek, S.C. He committed to UGA last summer but later backed off, yet still has the Bulldogs among his leaders of South Carolina, Clemson and Florida. UGA’s biggest advantage with Terry is that he is best buddies with Camden County QB Brice Ramsey, who is committed to UGA. Terry lived with Ramsey for a few weeks last summer so they could train together.
  • DB Shaq Wiggins of Sandy Creek High School. He committed to UGA last Friday, but that hasn’t made the competition even blink. Within the last week, Wiggins has been offered by Vanderbilt, Clemson and South Carolina, as if the commitment to the Bulldogs never happened. Oh well, that’s just recruiting these days. However, what has caused a wave of concern among UGA fans is that Wiggins made a surprise visit to Alabama on Thursday. It was supposed to be clandestine trip but one of his teammates blew the cover by tweeting the travel plans. You’ve got to love Social Media. Wiggins has assured UGA fans that he’s committed to the Bulldogs.
  • S Tray Matthews of Newnan High School. This big-time playmaker committed to UGA over Alabama last summer. Matthews has been one of UGA’s biggest recruiters, vowing to do his best to convince pal Reuben Foster to join him in Athens. However, Matthews threw everybody a curveball this week when he said that his father wanted him to check out Alabama. Stay tuned.
  • RB Alvin Kamara of Norcross High School. You’re a pretty big deal if Nick Saban mails you 105 recruiting letters in one day. UGA fans actually rejoiced about that because in Alvin’s photo with the bouquet of letters, he just so happened to be wearing shorts with the UGA logo. Kamara claims it was just a coincidence. One other note: Kamara said he talked with Mark Richt and assistant Bryan McClendon on Thursday after another Georgia RB said he tried to commit to the Bulldogs a couple of weeks ago but was turned down because he was told UGA only planned to sign one RB for 2013Derrick Henry of Yulee, Fla. – who has already committed to UGA. It was ring, ring to Kamara, who said, “Coach Richt just wanted to make it clear that they offered me at running back, they are going to sign another running back in this class, and he wants it to be me.” Kamara is extremely important to UGA after another in-state RB target, Tyren Jones, committed to Alabama over the Bulldogs and Clemson this week. What about Derrick Henry’s pledge to UGA? Will that affect Kamara’s consideration of the Bulldogs? “Not at all. I’m sure he’s a good player and all. I feel confident about my abilities, too. If I went to Georgia, that would be good thing to have someone like him there, too. I like competition because it brings out the best in everyone.”

Now back to our original question for Richt: “Are you finished?” This time, we’re talking about the 2012 kids.

  • Junior college WR-DB Mario Alford will take an official visit to UGA this weekend and will commit on the spot if offered a scholarship, according to ESPN’s Radi Nabulsi. Alford would be eligible to play next season.
  • There’s also Maryland OL transfer Max Garcia, who has offers from Florida, UGA, Auburn and Ole Miss, among others. The former Norcross High School standout was also granted permission to transfer to any ACC school or Vanderbilt earlier this week. Garcia will likely wait until his spring break in a couple of weeks before he starts taking official visits. The NFL prospect will have to sit out next season with two left to play.

[UPDATE at 5:01 p.m. Saturday] Reuben Foster was at UGA’s basketball game on Saturday afternoon, along with Alvin Kamara, Tramel Terry and Shaq Wiggins. Foster’s name was chanted during the game, according to multiple reports. Also hearing that JC DB Mario Alford did not visit UGA this weekend.

Mark Richt is such a liar for a such a good Christian man.

Greene “Coach, I want to commit”
Richt”We are not recruiting anymore RBs, sorry, God bless you, close the door on the way out”
Immediately picks up phone and calls Kamara.”So, we really need another running back for the 2013 class”
Kamara:”But I thought that that you weren’t recruiting anymore RBs”
Richt: “Did I say that?I don’t remember saying that”

Interesting…….. Coach Richt tells poor Tyrene Jones(whose dream was to play for UGA) that they were not going to sign anymore RB’s for the ‘13 class —- then He immediately contacts Kamara telling him at least one more RB will be signed !!!

There happens to be a certain Coach(nameless) in the SEC that would be crucified by a certain fan base(nameless) in the SEC if this were the other way around!!

That is what is called a hypocrite !

So Richt does not have a spot for Tyrene Jones — going as far as to tell the kid he isn’t signing any-more RB’s!!
However, immediately He phones Kamara to assure him there will be at least one more RB added to next years class!
UGA fans — Do you see nothing wrong with this?

As for Carvell’s original question — “Are You Finished?”

Answer — Yes & He has been since Sep. 27th, 2007 !!!

Blackoutanyone? and I suppose that player will just so happen flip to Alabama. Heck I heard that Georgia may do some flipping themselves. But of course in your little mind every kid in the nation is beating down the doors to get into Alabama. Shoot ole Nicky boy should have his full amount of commits by the end of next weekend. I especially like the lie about how your ole coach is the best that there is at judging talent. What a laugh. If he is so good at judging talent then why does he have to keep making excuses for pulling scolarships from his players because they ain’t getting the job done. If he were such a great judge of talent, then he wouldn’t have players that needed to be weeded out every year to make room for the player’s that he doesn’t have room for and it also doesn’t hurt, when you over recruit every year. That way it is pretty much assured, that you will get a pretty good class. Just curious though Blackout. Why is it that a man can be considered a great judge of talent, when he offers every high school kid in America a scolarship. One would figure that if he was such a great judge of talent, he wouldn’t have to over commit to kids every year. I would ask you to think about that for a second but if your nose wasn’t stuck up so high, you would drown.

bigtime, but I was the seventh player to commit to Alabama, not the 26 or 27 or what ever number you so conviently came up with. Guess what genious? If Kamara doesn’t committ, then out side of Henry they may not sigh another RB. Then again Henry is being rumored to possibly enrolling early and not counting for the 2013 class, but the 2012 class. Just maybe also something happens and the dawgs change their mind and offers the Greene kid. You never know what will happen before signing day next year. Unseen events, especially with kid’s today are more the norm than a rarity. What I can tell you though, is that Mark Richt will do something that that lying snake in the grass, Nicky boy Saban won’t do and that is to at least give the guy plenty of time to look around at other schools.

@bigtime—Greene has had an offer since his freshman year of high school. He had a year and a half to pull the trigger. He waited too late. I don’t see a thing wrong with this. Now if we had already accepted his commitment and two weeks before signing day said “too bad kid, we don’t want you”…well that’s different.

I like how you UGA fans try to justify Richt telling that poor kid a flat out lie. As it turns out, holier than thou Richt isn’t really holier than thou. Put a ribbon on it, slap a bow on it, it’s still a flat out lie to a kid thats dreams were crushed by the wolf in sheeps clothing known as Mark Richt.

UGA fans, your hypocrisy never ceases to amaze me. You guys can’t see the forest for the trees.

Bottom Line: The best thing UGA can do to improve recruiting is to WIN GAMES!!!! WE have a golden opportunity in the upcoming season to put the beatdown on people. With our returning players, plus the guys we signed, plus the best schedule in a century, there is NO EXCUSE for not kickin some serious arse.

Winning and WINNING BIG gets these kids attention today. If we want to compete with the Alabama’s and LSU’s, we gotta win and win big. That more than anything will help lock down our borders and keep more of these top recruits at home.

Just my humble opinion. I may be wrong, but I doubt it.

@Tdawg Saban isn’t doing anything any other coach in Div I is doing, it is just publicized to the 10th degree by the media in this case the AJC. You can sit back and do the blame game and put UGA on this great big pedestal but they do the same thing. You Georgia fans put your blinders on and act like nothing is going on. The big difference between UGA and Bama is simple. Bama has a coaching staff that coaches players and UGA doesn’t at this point in time, except for maybe Grantham.

Perfect example of commitment Dee Hart blew his knee out, was he medically removed from the team? No!

He has never played a down for Bama but is that ever brought up? No again!

I set the record straight on this the other day, but as usual all the UGA haters are back spouting lies about Mark Richt instead of reading what he said and what Green said. Green said the coaches told him they were taking one rb in the 2013 class. Richt told Kamara they were taking one rb in the 2013 class. The coaching staff wants that to be Kamara, but they also have an offer out to Tyshon Dye (who the defensive coaches want, but Dye wants to play rb). If Henry follows through with his verbal commitment he is enrolling in January and will be counted against the 2012 class because as the article states UGA only signed 19 so far for the 2012 class (That number will hopefully increase with some signees this Spring and early enrollees in January). If Henry enrolls and UGA only signs one rb next February, then nothing has changed from what Richt has told anyone. I know all of you Bama fans are used to a coach that looks a kid in the eye and then accepts his verbal commitment and then tells him later that he no longer has an offer, but that is not what happened in this case and all of your lies and spin will not change that.
