Reuben Foster, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 2 overall football prospect, told the AJC that he’s transferring to another high school for his senior season.
The 6-foot-2, 235-pound junior linebacker is committed to Alabama but still flirting with UGA and plans to attend Junior Day with the Bulldogs on Saturday.
Foster, along with several of his high school teammates, is upset over the controversial firing of Troup High School coach Charles Flowers.
“I’m definitely gone, I’m leaving, I’m out of here,” Foster told the AJC on Wednesday night. “Coach Flowers has changed my life. He’s like a father figure. It’s just not right with what happened.”

Big news for UGA: Reuben Foster, who is committed to Alabama, plans to visit UGA for Junior Day (AJC)
Flowers was fired from Troup on Tuesday apparently over the improper transfer of at least one football player into the school district, according to the AJC’s Todd Holcomb. However, the Georgia High School Association said it’s not investigating Troup for any alleged wrongdoing.
“Everybody is still mad about it, the whole school is still mad,” said Troup offensive lineman Joe Sanders, another college prospect who has early offers from Tennessee and South Florida. Sanders also hasn’t ruled out transferring from Troup. “I don’t know what we’re going to do. But we’re ‘one’ as a team, as we’re going to do it together.”
Foster and Sanders said at least 8-10 Troup teammates are considering transferring to another school before next season. The biggest loss would be Foster, who is considered the best football player out of the area since Tray Blackmon.
Troup has already named a coaching replacement, according to the players. They were told Troup linebackers coach Lynn Kendall will be promoted to the top spot. Foster confirmed he talked briefly with Kendall on Tuesday.
When Foster was asked what it would take for him to return to Troup for his senior season, he said, “We all want Coach Flowers back. That’s it. We want Coach Flowers back here.”
Fast forward to recruiting: Why is Foster visiting UGA this weekend? “They show me a lot of mad respect and love. I like the coaches, and they always show me a lot of attention. I’m still looking at Georgia but I’m still committed to Alabama … nothing has changed there. I’m just checking out some other places.”
Foster, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 2 overall prospect by 247sports.com, said he will also make an unofficial visit to Auburn in the near future.

7576DAWG….yesterday the UGA fans were making the comment that these parents need to get involved to show their kids just how bad a person Saban is. That they need to help guide their kids to make the right decisions. Now, you say that Trey’s dad needs to stay out of it because he wants him to visit the best team coach and team in college football. How ironic.
Love the arrogance that, win all of our games and people will be lining up to play at UGA. Do you mean in the same sense as they are at Alabama, even after a 3 loss season in 2010? Just curious.

RedandBlackDawg, you make some excellent points. I remember a research study that came out back in the mid 90’s that showed statistically that something like 1 in over 200,000 division one college football players even get drafted let alone make it in the NFL. It’s basically like winning the lottery statistics wise.

John…just so you are aware, Foster’s Mom is 100% behind Alabama and is a life long Alabama fan, just like Reuben. His father is as well. They are from Alabama.
Yes, Alabama does have some good LB’s but we only signed one MLB in the last class in Reggie Ragland and it is possible he could play SAM as well. Foster is being recruited to Alabama as that next MLB and the kid will be “the Man” wherever he goes. As for his commitment being soft…I find that a very strange statement when he is the most active recruiter for Alabama. Nkemdiche said in a recent article that Foster is working him hard to go to Alabama and Matthews has said the same. Strange a guy would want to help Alabama get the best players in the country yet wants to sign with another school A little strange don’t you think?
And please do tell me how these players are treated once they are in the program since you seem to have some inside scoop. And please dont give me if they dont perform they are cut. If that is the case, please explain guys like Tyler Love (5 star OL who has never really played), Nick Williams (BD who has never player), Jarrick Williams (4 star who has never played), Austin Sheppard (4 star who has never played), Ronald Carsell (never played), Michael Bowman (4 star who has never played)….I could go on. They are ALL still on the team. Add to that they fact that players, whether on the team or no longer playing, have nothing but great things to say about Saban and his program and how it prepared them for their lives in the NFL or after football. I dont think you really know what you are talking about.

Tray Matthews has been UGA’s biggest recruiter. If he fell for Saban’s sell it would really hurt. Maybe he’s heading up to Bama to recruit a little more
And I so hope Foster swaps to UGA. We’ve got a lot more opportunity for him at ILB than Bama. But I can understand a top LB being interested in Bama too.

Not to be too critical of these high school players, but what happened to the concepts of school pride and team. The coach may have gotten a raw deal but by saying we are transferring to another school because things didn’t go as we like then it’s all about me and what I want. This is what is destroying team sports. It’s all about the individual and not about the team. The old T-shirt slogan that Erk used of TEAM me has changed to team ME. I see it where I live-little Johnny doesn’t get the playing time he thinks he is owed so his parents get mad and move him to another school or rec league. You would be suprised at how many kids (and their parents) would rather play all the time on a losing team than play part of the time on a winning team. I don’t understand this selfish mentality.

Evidently Saban is offering relatives and girl friends jobs again to get a recruit. What happened to the good old days when The Bear got alumni donors to hire players to wash cars at 10 times the going rate? Foster is a no miss like Trey Blackmon was a no miss – but Blackmon missed.

SECisFootball, I respect Saban and Bama with what they are doing now but remember your team when times get tough like the past ten years or so before Saban rejuvenated your program. Times will come when you are not on top. That’s just life; ask Nebraska; ask Penn State. When Trinton Sturdivant went down with his third knee surgery he wasnt cast to the side as so much rubbish. Every player on our team is important regardless of what they can contribute to the “program”. Just saying that both teams have merits and we should not bash one another but respectfully tip out hats in each direction and move on. Regardless where a 17 or 18 year old decides to play collegiately, it will ultimately come down to who wants it the most. There’s a growing desire in Athens to get to where Bama just reached.
Dont be surprised if two or three years from now the two teams will be in opposite corners. Please continue to support Bama as passionately then as you are right now. Promote your team and leave the bashing of others to others!

I was just referring to situations in general that goes on at many colleges, not singling Bama out – not the intention. It is true that the Dawgs will be a family atmosphere for Foster as well as Bama. I’m just saying that I’m hearing that the commitment is somewhat soft. Maybe that is inaccurate, but he will be recruited strongly to the end. By the way, Josh Harvey-Clemons was reportedly recruiting just as hard for us as Reuben is for Bama. He very nearly signed with another team on signing day.Who can truly know what a young man will do until that day gets here. Good luck to the Tide.

Ok Techies, I see where you are going, and your argument just flat out sucks. CMR has NEVER pulled a scholarship because a UGA commit visited another school. The reason CPJ is criticized for taking visits from other committed prospects is because of the other side of his policy. If he and you other Tech fans want kids to be a MAN OF HONOR and stand by their commitments, then DO NOT TAKE VISITS FROM OTHER COMMITTED PROSPECTS. PERIOD!!! You have no earthly idea whether a kid is really committed or not if he visits your campus. He/she may just want to visit Atlanta and check out the campus or accompany a teammate. So to say that a kid isn’t “really” committed is asinine in light of the fact that all verbal commitments, scholarship offers, and yes, even LOI’s are non-binding. Stop trying to defend your own coach’s policy by just throwing trash into the wind and hoping it will fly. This isn’t a diss and I don’;t mean to come off ranting. I actually like CPJ’s policy to a certain extent (except the pulled scholarships), but it’s hurting Tech’s recruiting efforts.

@slydog,
Dougherty County has 4 high schools, Westover, Monroe, Dougherty, and Albany High Schools’. Students go to the school based off there location, unless by federal law, if that school didn’t meet AYP standards then the student could transfer to any of the schools within that school system for “academic reasons” w/o having to move into the school zone. The only school within the Dougherty County School System that has met AYP standards is Westover

John….I graduated undergrad from BAMA in ‘97 and got my MBA there in ‘99. Became a season ticket holder there in ‘01 when I could afford it and have missed two home games since they. Fan support is something BAMA really doesn’t have a problem with. We not only sell out ever game (although the frat section sometimes think they are too cool to come to games against lesser opponents) and we have a 13,000 person waiting list for season tickets and that is after adding 10,000 season on 2 years ago.
Also…I understand that the league cycles but right now Saban is building up Alabama like he did LSU. We are not going to win the SEC every year and arent going to win a NC every year. But we are in position to be one of the top teams in the league every year and once Saban does leave, we should able to plug in a coach who can continue what he has built.

Saban will probably stay at Bama till he retires. He got totally curb stomped in the short time he was in the NFL so doubtful his ego will allow him to try that again. Since he cannot ‘oversign’ in the NFL, he had no advantage over the other teams there. Just down to pure coaching and leadership and in those cases, he was simply not not up to par in the NFL. So being a HC at a school where a glass trophy is more important than morals and ethics makes Bama a perfect fit for Saban.

SEC, it may not be a violation to buy a kids commitment by hiring his girlfriend but morally it stinks and you know it. It may not be a violation for a politician to sell his vote on an issue for a large campaign contribution to his PAC but it still stinks. It may not be a violation to not renew a players scholarship because he didn’t turn out to be as good as his egocentric coach thought he would be but it still stinks. It may not be a violation to rub your genitals on a passed out rival fan …. oh, wait, nevermind.

Doesnt seem like a team player…sucks regarding the head coaches firing…but what about the rest of the team that’s depending on him to play this year. So when he doesnt get his way…he transfers…sounds alot like Ealey, and few other previous Dawgs. He fellow teammates are looking for his leadership during times like this, but he opts to leave them behind and move elsewhere. Due to depth for UGA at LB position when he enrolls, he’d likely be a starter after the first few games…at Bama, he’ll most like redshirt, or see limited playing time till his sophomore year. As always, we’ll welcome him to UGA, but will wish him luck and move onto other prospects if he heads elsewhere.

nate from detroit….please stop it with the morals garbage. If morals were such a big issues, you would not have the team of thugs like you do at UGA. The arrest rate for UGA players is significantly higher than it is at most schools, especially Alabama. We have had 3 idiots arrested in the last 4 years. UGA has that and then some every off season. On top of that, you had a kid with a scholarship offer from UGA who tried to commit and Richt turned him down and said he no longer had an offer. How immoral of him when everyone knows UGA plans on taking another RB. If Saban did that, you guys would be all over him.

Look, coach Flowers was a good coach and he may of even been a nice guy. But the bottom line is he was paying to have players live in his district and he wasn’t even trying to hide it. Someone had physical proof and took it to the board and they had no choice but to fire him. So coach Flowers brought ever bit of that on himself.

SECisFootball, one of my closest friends is a Bama fan much like yourself and is as passionate as you are and stood with them through the tough (Dubose, Shula, Price) years like we had to with the tough years of our (Goff, Donnan) own. There are a tremendous amount of bandwagon Bama fans in our area of the state and I’m sure that is probably the case with Georgia fans living in Alabama, of which my father’s family is originally from, from time to time. Bama is my second favorite team in the SEC so I rarely take shots at the Tide (and even then in good jest) while keeping great respect. While Saban may not be my favorite coach, I greatly respect him and told my friend that when you hired him, Bama was headed back to the top tier of the SEC.
By the way, y’all are getting an outstanding pair of players from our area of the state – Calhoun’s Adam Griffith and Pepperell’s Dakota Ball. Griffith is phenomenal and will solve your kicking woes for the next four years. Ball’s parents were big Georgia fans so the parent thing doesn’t always work out the way we like it. Dakota has a great motor kind of like David Pollack and will be a 110% kind of effort guy imo and may be one of your most under rated recruits.
I simply was trying to give you the reasoning behind the continual pursuit of Reuben Foster by the Georgia coaches. Harvey-Clemons had non publicly committed to us in the early fall and recruited with a vengeance for the Dawgs, yet entertained to the very end other schools. Word is that Foster is doing something similar with the only difference being that his commitment is public. Clemons might as well have been public due to the number of other recruits mentioning it.
The recruiting services list several of Bama’s 2012 recruits as inside backers. Maybe Bama will play Dillon Lee and some others outside like we plan to do opposite with Dawson.
In the end, I’m sure both Bama and UGA will sign their share of very good inside linebackers in 2013 regardless of the decision of Reuben Foster.

John…I hear ya. I grew up a UGA fan as both my parents went there but went to BAMA and since then a lot has changed with my liking of UGA. Have many UGA friends and they all love their school just as I love mine.
I dont question why UGA is pursuing Foster. I just give my reasons and arguement for why he will stick with BAMA and by now, everyone knows what that is. More teams than UGA are going to come at Foster but I think based on the fact that he committed to BAMA so early, and on the spot when he got the offer, plus the fact that he grew up in Alabama and his entire family are all BAMA fans plays very well into him coming to Alabama. The depth chart is basically something a coach should throw out the door with guys like RF and Nkemdiche. They will play regardless of where they go and Saban has never been afraid to play a true freshmen. LB’s like Rolondo McClain, Donte Hightower, CJ Mosley and Nico Johnson are all evidence of that.
As for his position, we do have guys who in HS were inside LB’s but they will change in the Alabama system. Our last 2 Mike LB’s were both 6′2-6′4 and weighed 260 lbs (Hightower and McLain). Nico Johnson is 6′3, 245 and Mosley is 6′4, 240. Reggie Ragland has the potential to get to that size but has the speed to play SAM. Foster can definitely get into that 250 range in BAMA’s S&C program.
As for the 2 guys we have coming, I think Ball will benefit from a RS year and if he lives up to it, Griffin could be a good kicker for us. I am a bit skeptical though. Not because of AG but because of our ability to kill a good kicker. Cade Foster was the #1 or #2 kicker coming out of HS. He is 6′2, 230 and couldnt hit the endzone of a kickoff with 10 yards out with a good wind at his back. We have a punter on scholarship who has never seen the field outside of A-Day. I hope he is a good one but I was pretty happy with Shelley in the NC game!

As for a timeframe, lets look at the 5 years Saban has been at Alabama so we can make a fair comparison. Not last season, but the year before, UGA/Richt had 11 players arrested one off season, earning UGA the Fulmer cup. BAMA has had 5 players arrested since Saban was there. We had some issues under Shula because getting disciplined by him was about as scary as, well, getting disciplined by Richt. When Saban came in and set up a strict system of accountability, those issues all but disappeared. FACTS!

This is after shula gave tylers twin brother a job working for alabama and gave him an academic scholarship. Being a man of character that Tyler Love is he told saban he was going to work as hard as he could and hopefully play one day, unfortunately Love could never put on the weight to be an elite tackle, but I give Saban credit for honoring his scholarship eventhough he was asked politely to transfer.

After living in Alabama, I learned one thing and that is Ala has nothing to be proud of in the entire state other than it’s football history. The whole self esteem of most in ALA is based on how the football team is doing. During the Pre-Saban years, many were questioning God and doubting him until their real Savior showed up! ALA is below Georgia in every aspect but national championships so they have to beat their chests about something to be proud about the crap hole of a state. Since the group Alabama retired, I mean name one postive thing out of Alabama besides I20. They have a better coach and recruiting now, but it will cycle back out. Karma comes for those that treat kids like Saban. If Georgia ever wins something, GA kids will stay here instead of turning ALA into Univ of GA at Alabama since they could not win squat without out of state atheletes! IN ALA it is a requirement that everyone in the trailer park has a Roll Tide shirt, even if you have to miss a trailer rent payment to get one!

Donte Hightower was very vocal heading down to New Orleans for the title game that if a player was late for cerfew by 1 minute, the players counsel would recommend that player be sent home immediately.
