Johnathan McCrary: 4-star QB spurns UGA and Alabama for Vanderbilt

(AJC)

Two Cedar Grove football stars are leaving the state to play college football. Senior OL Brandon Greene (left) signed with Alabama over UGA earlier this month, while junior QB Johnathan McCrary committed to Vanderbilt over UGA and Alabama (AJC)

One of the state’s top quarterbacks turned down UGA and Alabama to commit to Vanderbilt on Thursday night.

It was a surprising turn of events for Johnathan McCrary, the junior quarterback from Cedar Grove High School. He’s the son of former Atlanta Falcons tight end Greg McCrary, who played eight years in the NFL.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound McCrary had been thinking seriously about Vanderbilt, and made the abrupt decision to go ahead and commit to the Commodores after his high school basketball game on Thursday night.

“I don’t know why he did it tonight,” the elder McCrary told the AJC. “We played [defending state champion] Columbia in basketball and it was an uphill battle. Johnathan thrives on competition. He knows Vanderbilt doesn’t have the same football tradition as some of the other schools that were recruiting him. But he said before he leaves Vanderbilt, he wants to make an impact. He wants to play against an Alabama or Georgia and make an impact.”

Even Vanderbilt coach James Franklin was surprised to get the call on Thursday night. The Commodores felt good about their chances but not closing the deal this early. “[Franklin] couldn’t believe it,” the elder McCrary said. “We’re going to visit Vanderbilt on Saturday and see everything. But he couldn’t believe it. I mean, he couldn’t believe it. He was excited.”

McCrary had around 20 early scholarship offers, including Florida State, Auburn, Georgia Tech, Ohio State and Tennessee.

It was UGA and Alabama that finished tied as runner-up for McCrary.

UGA already has one QB commitment for next year’s recruiting class with Camden County’s Brice Ramsey. McCrary’s father claimed that Ramsey’s presence did not affect his son’s consideration of the Bulldogs. “No, that had no impact whatsoever. Not at all. Johnathan prides himself on competition. He has seen the other quarterbacks out there, and feels like he can compete against anybody. That had no impact on where he was going.”

This past season at Cedar Grove, McCrary completed 69 percent of his passes for 2,643 yards and 27 TDs with 9 interceptions.

Let him sign the papers now. That way his name doesn’t come up 200 more times because he may change his mind. Oh wait, he decided to stick with his commitment. Never mind his HS coach thought he was going to change his mind. You know what, he was never really committed. His feelings were hurt because the coach didn’t call him enough. Whatever.

That’s funny because in a recent interview, Johnathon McCrary said himself that he wasn’t going anywhere that was recruiting other QBs this year. Good luck to him at Vandy, where he will surely have them in contention for the Papa Johns Bowl year after year.

Probably had a lot to do with Ramsey at uga and when saban told Ramsey’s coach he was the best he has seen this yr. That probably did it for ala, regardless of what is being said by pops. As far as life after football and the GT poster, that should be paul johnson’s recruiting pitch. ” GT where football doesn’t matter”

Doesn’t mean a thing.

High school students and college football coaches are just like used car salesmen and politicians – what they say today is not a realiable predicter for tomorrow.

Saint Mark of UGA will “flip” this Vandy commitment IF he needs a quarterback. Can’t see why with Hutson Mason taking over for Murray after next year and at least two superstar quarterbacks sitting behind Mason if he doesn’t work out.

No offense to my fellow GT fan, but depending on the major going to Vandy does not mean the kid is looking past his playing days. They have a new “athlete” major that even the kids majoring in it can’t tell you what it’s for. I have to give Franklin credit though he is doing a good job recruiting.

Tide commit Reuben Foster trying to recruit nation’s top player. LaGrange, Georgia linebacker Reuben Foster is not only one of Alabama’s top recruits for the Class of 2013, he may also be one of their top recruiters.

Foster has told both ESPN and 247Sports that he is actively attempting to convince Nkemdiche to commit to the Crimson Tide.

“I knew where I wanted to go,” Foster told ESPN. “My family knew where I wanted to go. They love Alabama. I love Alabama. Plus, who wouldn’t want to get coached by Nick Saban and Kirby Smart? They’re NFL-style coaches.”

Foster, who visited Alabama for their first Junior Day event in January, is coming off a spectacular junior season in which he compiled 185 tackles, including 34 tackles for loss and 18 sacks. While he continues to be pursued by other schools, including the home-state Georgia Bulldogs, Foster reiterated in both interviews that he is firmly committed to the Tide.

Make a MENTAL NOTE of this Recruit, 4* talent – Academic Qualifier for GT, 6-3 190lbs. “pass-first” QB.

There are PLENTY of these types of Recruits that play in the Metro Atlanta Area (pop. 5.5 Million people), that are Academic Qualifiers for GT that GT FAILS TO close on.

Then, after NSD, the smug, elitist, whining, complaining GT fanbase will claim it is the Recruits’ FAULT since most of them don’t qualify for GT.

CPJ is getting his A$$ handed to him in his own back yard, recruiting-wise.

This recruit has been EVALUATED by many other HCs to be able to play QB in college, whereas the recent QB Recruits that GT has brought in, ONLY GT & CPJ have evaluated them as QBs in college.

For all the HYPE over Vad Lee, only GT, Minnesota, Vandy & NC State wanted him as a QB, the REST wanted him as a WR/DB.

Dennis Andrews was only wanted as a QB by GT, the rest of the schools saw him as a DB.

Justin Thomas was told by Bama that he was wanted as a DB, and his 4* Rating coming out of HS was based on him being a DB or WR in college and NOT as a QB.

By recruiting QBs that ONLY GT sees as QBs, you end up with a very WEAK PASSING Game and then when you NEED to pass to win a game, you don’t have the QB that can get it done, especially when it comes to running a 2-min or 4-min offense.

This is WHY CPJ has been 14-12 over the last 2 seasons, my fellow GT fans might recognize this record as “the Chan Gailey equilibrium”.

Missing out on recruits like this QB is what is killing GT FB recruiting-wise!

You will get your wish to compete against UGA and Alabama.

He would have been a depth recruit at his position for UGA so I think he made the wise choice, that will give him the best chance to see earlier playing time. QB is not a position of need for UGA right now. He has good height and probably needs to put on a couple of pounds to stay healthy in the SEC, but I am sure he will have the time to do that. I think their present QB has at least two more years.

WvE, well stated. GT folks continue to hide behind that worn out excuse, “our academic requiments are just too strict”. Tell that to Dalvin Tomlinson and hundreds of smart kids that do not even consider GT. What QB that has a dream of playing on Sundays is going to a school that operates out of the antiquated Triple Option that runs the ball 60+ times a game and passes 12? What relative NFL experience would a QB gain from this offense? And why would any highly touted WR go to GT and hope to receive a pass when the game is lost and both the people in Bobby Dodd stadium knows they are going to pass. And before the Techers start a rebuttal based on one WR, Calvin Johnson, I submit he was an anomaly.

Murray, LeMay, Ramsey – three reasons he did not choose UGA. Saban will still pressure the young man but he is a duel threat QB – not a drop back passer QB like Ramsey. Camden County runs the ball about 75% of the time so Ramsey’s stats won’t be as spectacular. Still, Ramsey had a 17 TD to 2 Interception ratio. LeMay should follow Murray unless Mason is given a chance in 2013. LeMay was ranked the #2 QB before he got in trouble with a girl and was kicked out of school. He hasn’t played in a real game in 2 years. Hopefully Richt will give LeMay a chance against the three cupcakes on their schedule to get the rust off. LeMay has remarkable accuracy and a very low interception ratio. 70+ pass completion %, 80+ TDs and only 4 interceptions! Give him a year and he will pushing Murray for the starting job. Even though LeMay is a drop back QB he can run a true 4.6 40. Glad McCrary is going any where but Bummer.

The idea of the shotgun spread is to get your best athlete the most touches. The difference is that Tech runs it as close to the LOS as possible, and utilitze the B-Back heavily. There isn’t generally a pitch schemed into the shotgun spread.

And since HS WR’s most likely can’t block, you run it out of the shotgun so you can quick-pass. The shotgun spread is a simplified offense for a HS skillset.

Exactly so McCrary passing numbers are going to be much higher than someone who runs a wing-t. If Ramsey would of went to a different school, say lassiter, he would be putting up huge numbers because of his arm strength and release. But I will say his INT rate is so low bc he doesn’t throw

The kid just wanted to go to Vanderbilt and they showed him the most love early. All struggling football programs recruit and offer PSA’s earlier than the big boys. They have to. If he changes his mind, so what? What school and degree he receives has no bearing on success. It’s all up to him, mixed with a little luck. Simple as that!!!

Fl Jacket, Hill in the 3rd round ? the highest anyone has projected him thus far is the 4th and thats if he has a great combine. Hills downside is he lacks the experience that a wr needs to be more than a project in the NFL.having never played in an offense that passes the ball, tech throws the ball big difference. Cone made a practice squad because of his speed. D Thomas was a freak of nature that had a tremendous ability to run after catching the ball but would he have spurned Spurrier and Richt to play in PJ’s offense?. From this class Summers did have an offer from Florida but not as a wr Henry had some schools took a late look at him due to some unforeseen defections (Florida) but is a big time project, Autry wasn’t offered by Arkansas he would’ve been better suited going to a smaller division school. All of these projects WR you list other than Summers, Tech was there best option and in most cases only option to play BCS football.None will offer any immediate help. Pj misses his top targets year after year. .There’s a reason only Navy and Army run this type of offense.

Roll tide roll, before you make an asinine statement like “wishing they had been good enough to be scouted by the Crimson Tide” you should take a look and see just how many did have offers from Saban and chose to attend UGA. Why did 3 of the top 6 players in Alabama choose FSU over Bama?

It is called playing time…or lack of it…Freshman rarely play here….

6IML,

Good to see you around again. In seeing your handle and my own experience I’ve realized what sucks about being an Alabama fan. In recognition of the 09 title I went out and bought this awesome mug that had a screenprint of BDS around the glass and a listing of Bama’s then 13 national titles. Now that we’ve won a 14th that great cup is outta date- as well as some other gear. Oh well. I guess the one thing that sucks about being a Bama fan is that we have to update our national championship gear on a regular basis. Guess we just have to deal with it. And of course you have to update your handle regularly.

In the past Bama won plenty of sec and national titles with mostly just instate talent. No reason it can’t be done again. Its worked well so far much to your chagrin.

Rolling out the same comments about CPJ’s recruiting still doesn’t make them right.

Travin Henry was offered late by Tech because if they offered him earlier, all the other schools would hae been on him as well. I think it’s a pretty known fact now that CPJ and his staff are very capable evaluators of HS talent.

They will offer a kid when he’s listed by recruiting sites as a 2-star after their Junior years. Then people like you will snicker that he only chose Tech because his only other offers were from MTSU or Western Kentucky. Then once that kid played his senior year, and the development occurs, and that kid rises up in the rankings and becomes a 3-star ranked within the top 100 at their position (this is exactly what happened with Will Adams and Antonio Crawford). Then Auburn and Miami offer those kids, who failed to evaluate them correctly in the first place.

I’m guessin Franklin promised you the starting job just like he did with the instate kid (Robinette) last year. The advantage McCrary will have over Robinette is that according to Franklin, Robinette is a LIAR, he’s UNETHICAL,and has no INTEGRITY because he decommitted from North Carolina at the last minute and signed with Candy.I’m SURE Franklin also told McCrary all the details about how he’s illegally and unethiclly talkin to the starting quarterback at Maryland and tryin to get him to transfer to Candyland where he’ll have 2 more years of elligibility remaining,Overall, i think McCrary to Candy is much better than him going to a relevant school where he might be a threat to ever win something. The best McCrary can hope for at Candy is to help them have 1 more win than losses, and maybe beat a team with a winning record.lol Franklin has not done either at Candyland. haha

SO many schools wanted him and not just SEC schools. At Vandy he wont have to worry about competition. HE will be the MAN and thats a good secure feeling. He could start at UGA when Ramsey left though. If he took a redshirt and Ramsey left after 3 years, then he would have 3 years left at UGA I believe. So I dont know about not going to UGA, his home state school and committing to Vandy before he even took a visit.

Vandy’s coach might not even be there when he graduates high school! Rash decision made with the heart more than the head. I would not bank on him going to Vandy because of that and Vandy’s coach is a hot commodity and likely gone before he would finish college and maybe ever take a snap.

_________________

Travin Henry was projected by many colleges & HCs as an OLB rather than a WR.

Just because he’s big doesn’t mean he’ll have the speed of a Bey-Bey or Calvin.

Another problem with your strategy above is that it puts GT FB in a jam by forcing GT FB to hope that 2* recruits will somehow develop & OVERTAKE 4* & 5* Recruits after they get to college.

Over the last 5 yrs. the State of Georgia has produced the THIRD MOST 4* & 5* recruits and the 5th most BCS Recruits in the country, add in that from this most recent Recruiting Class 25% of the SEC signees this yr. came from Georgia HSs.

Out of all this talent in Georgia, there are more than ENOUGH ACADEMIC QUALIFIERS that are 4* & higher that could play for GT if GT were a more attractive choice FB-wise.

Hoping that 2* guys can magically transform themselves into 4* guys by the time they play as RS-Fr. or T-sophs is long-shot strategy at putting together a BCS-level CFB team.

Thanks for proving to everyone that CPJ doesn’t know what he’s doing when it comes to running a MAJOR College FB program outside of his running game.

BTW, what you described above is embarrassing to GT, it is the same as some geek-nerd-loser wining & dining a beautiful woman and then the woman demands that he take her home early and then she calls up the guy that she really wants to be with & then he leaves the next morning, identifying a beautiful woman (good recruit) means NOTHING if you cannot close the DEAL!.

In all honesty UGA aspires to be like Alabama in football but has not come close so they look for a scapegoat. Nick Saban is supposedly Satan but kids sure are lining up playing for him meanwhile there is a boat load of talent in the state of Georgia and UGA can’t sign a full class. 2. To kick at or tread on disdainfully.

BAMA players graduate (most FB graduates in SEC, 4th best percentage in SEC) and don’t get in trouble. And, almost forgot, they win championships.

@61ML, is a terrible deflection. There roughly twice as many people in Georgia than Alabama. Basic math should tell you more prospects will come from there. The question then becomes “Why is UGA the most underachieving program in America?”.

Now that is some funny chit. Saban was a complete failure in the NFL. Smart has never coached in the NFL. Saban wins because Saban has more good players that anyone. Smart wins because he is the coach for the best players in the NCAA. Bama plays a cover 2. Because they have so many great players, they always have a fresh pass rush. McCrary has said that he wants to play in the SEC and he is going where he will get a chance to start. At UGA he would be behind Murray, Mason, and LeMay. At Bummer he would ride the bench next to another very talented QB – Sims. Sims is actually the best passer on the Bummer team and he will sit for at least one more year and probably two if he doesn’t transfer. Auburn needs a QB but they got two commits in the 2012 class. He likes Franklin’s in your face attitude and aggressiveness. Personally I think Franklin whines and complains to much. I am new at this and dont really know too much about the high school recruting class this year but I do remember watching a interview on Vanderbilts football coach. I remember when he was talking about his plan for rebulding the vanderbilts programs being like wow he is going to be a star and I am not really sure what struck a cord with me to think that.

Maybe Mccray thought the same thing I did and bought into his rebuliding plan of program. He seemed like a very personable , genunie and very passionate about football from what I can remember about him.

I am going to keep a eye on him because I have feeling in the next five years or so he will be a head coach in the nfl and he will be very succesfull at it

NCAA passes 4 year scholarship rule. Why do they continue to pick on Nick Saban?/ Totally unfair to the University of Alabama!!!

Just last week cut number of Strength staffs to 5, so what can Alabama do with those extra 5? Coming within the next year is the reduction to 80 total including the rule of counting all signees within the 4 year period against 80 total, excepting NCAA approved medicals and disicpline issue.

Just so unfair to Nick all these changes by NCAA, and to Alabama.

Some fans live in the past while others spend time trying to justify their infatuation with another programs success. Those people must be living a real dull life. But if you are looking at past accomplishments the real success of a program lies in the sustainment of that success. Levels of success are viewed and measured differently by everyone. Being jealous of another programs success and making constant attempts to tear it down is immature at best. Being a diehard Atlanta Braves fan I don’t make it a point to try and find or conjure up reasons in my own mind why the Yankees or for that matter even the Florida Marlins have won more WS than my Braves? What I look at is the facts that they have simply put a better team on the field, coached it right, and used the right strategy.

Hey Joshua, whats with this BS your acting like some disinterested fan of college football who just happened to read some article about cue ball Franklin and all of a sudden you are on here spewin this sewage about what a great coach cue ball Franklin is?LOL Your act is transparent, but i don’t blame you for not wanting to admit that you are a Candy fan.But while you’re tellin us all about what a great qb coach cue ball Franklin is,why dont you tell us about the qbs he coached at Maryland? Who are they and what have they done? Also.tell us about his qb at Candy.Tell us how he totally sucked last year and didnt he throw more interceptions than touchdown last year?Of course, that was under the coaching of the great cue ball Franklin,HAHAHAHA

Based on the single game highlight above, Johnathan will be playing just where he belongs. He will get plenty of playing time and most likely will contribute to a Vandy team in need of help.

Bama titles . LOL, Bama won 1 Sec title in the past 11 years, try 22 and only 5 of those the past 32 years. 5 SEC titles puts bama tied with Auburn, georgia , tennesse with 5 behind Florida and LSU who have the most over that span. Most of Bama titlels came in the 60’s and 70’s. Bama has a great program and tradition just like many SEC schools. Its good to see Bama resurgence after all the years of being irrelevant due to the massive number of vacated wins , bowl bans and the many years (I lost count) on NCAA probation.

Do not want him at UGA, but I just have to think this is another look at me. I am committed to the fat girl but I will still look at the pretty ones. I am very serious. Cut ties resources and money with this young man now. No one, well other than Herschel, is worth this kind of stuff. Vanderbilt he commits to and we know he is going to Alabama. So let the Vanderbilt Coach complain about the lack of character when he goes to Bama. I know it, he knows and Richt, do not fall for it.

When he has to play against the DAWGS and tide he’ll find out he made a bad choice.

Why he does such a dumb thing to go to pointy head Vandy. He knows Dawgs own Vandy. Well be beating the Commodes like the pointy head weaklings they are for years to come. He needs to rethink to know that Dawgs is best.

jawja02: Watson, although just a sophomore, has verbally committed to Clemson but we all know that verbals mean nothing with these kids. So let the competition begin. By the time Watson does sign there will at least another dozen or so potential Tom Brady’s that we will talking about.

Ghost: You’re right. UGA’s record against Vandy and Kentucky is impressive.

Ah, “Hairy Dawg”: “He needs to rethink to know that Dawgs is best.”

Just another reason why picking Vandy over UGA was a wise decision. Especially if he hopes to put together sentences properly…
