Johnathan McCrary: 4-star QB spurns UGA and Alabama for Vanderbilt

(AJC)

Two Cedar Grove football stars are leaving the state to play college football. Senior OL Brandon Greene (left) signed with Alabama over UGA earlier this month, while junior QB Johnathan McCrary committed to Vanderbilt over UGA and Alabama (AJC)

One of the state’s top quarterbacks turned down UGA and Alabama to commit to Vanderbilt on Thursday night.

It was a surprising turn of events for Johnathan McCrary, the junior quarterback from Cedar Grove High School. He’s the son of former Atlanta Falcons tight end Greg McCrary, who played eight years in the NFL.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound McCrary had been thinking seriously about Vanderbilt, and made the abrupt decision to go ahead and commit to the Commodores after his high school basketball game on Thursday night.

“I don’t know why he did it tonight,” the elder McCrary told the AJC. “We played [defending state champion] Columbia in basketball and it was an uphill battle. Johnathan thrives on competition. He knows Vanderbilt doesn’t have the same football tradition as some of the other schools that were recruiting him. But he said before he leaves Vanderbilt, he wants to make an impact. He wants to play against an Alabama or Georgia and make an impact.”

Even Vanderbilt coach James Franklin was surprised to get the call on Thursday night. The Commodores felt good about their chances but not closing the deal this early. “[Franklin] couldn’t believe it,” the elder McCrary said. “We’re going to visit Vanderbilt on Saturday and see everything. But he couldn’t believe it. I mean, he couldn’t believe it. He was excited.”

McCrary had around 20 early scholarship offers, including Florida State, Auburn, Georgia Tech, Ohio State and Tennessee.

It was UGA and Alabama that finished tied as runner-up for McCrary.

UGA already has one QB commitment for next year’s recruiting class with Camden County’s Brice Ramsey. McCrary’s father claimed that Ramsey’s presence did not affect his son’s consideration of the Bulldogs. “No, that had no impact whatsoever. Not at all. Johnathan prides himself on competition. He has seen the other quarterbacks out there, and feels like he can compete against anybody. That had no impact on where he was going.”

This past season at Cedar Grove, McCrary completed 69 percent of his passes for 2,643 yards and 27 TDs with 9 interceptions.

Around 2 thirds of Bama’s starters in 2011 were from the state of Alabama.

Bama fans sure are bitter and miserable. I guess I would be too if I was broke, uneducated, jobless and married to my own mother.

Let’s see UGA has Murray, Mason, LeMay and verbal from Ramsey… And what was the point about “Turning down” UGA? In reality if he does sign with Vandy he will have “Turned down 112 other D-1 Schools as well.
For Vandy’s sake I hope that his HS doesn’t have a “Darrick Rogers” or he will be going to UT.
Good luck to the young man at Vandy, a fine choice.

@Just Because

Redshirted kids from Louisiana would have won a championship in 2007. Florida kids would have won a championship in 2008. But, other than that, the state of Alabama has had a stranglehold on the BCS Championship.

Opportunity at Vandy.

At Bama, he would have to wait some and compete. Vandy needs players now.
Georgia has a commit from Brice Ramsey and has LeMay, Hudson and the Fouta from FL – cupboards full.

Foster and Nkemdiche will spurn UGA and go to BAMA
No one on the elite level would pick UGA over BAMA.

UGA lost 4 games last year – to the 4 teams that were ranked – pathetic.
UGA lost 7 games the year before
UGA lost 5 games before the 7 loss season.
HMMMMMM…… Looks like the Goff and Donnan years have returned with the exception that Jim Donnan won his bowl games. UGA has lost the last 2 games to UCF adn MI State…… again, pathetic.

I guess I just don’t understand how pointing out that your school underachieves despite being in a talent-rich area is supposed to be a put down towards Alabama. Heck UGA might be the nation’s most underachieving basketball program to go with it’s most underachieving football program.

@Better luck next time UGA

“I knew where I wanted to go,” Foster told ESPN. “My family knew where I wanted to go. They love Alabama. I love Alabama. Plus, who wouldn’t want to get coached by Nick Saban and Kirby Smart? They’re NFL-style coaches.”

Now that is some funny chit. Saban was a complete failure in the NFL. Smart has never coached in the NFL. Saban wins because Saban has more good players that anyone. Smart wins because he is the coach for the best players in the NCAA. Bama plays a cover 2. Because they have so many great players, they always have a fresh pass rush. I could coach the defense at Bama and win.

The next question is, “How did Bama sign all of those good players”…We all know about that chit.
