Shaq Wiggins: Top DB commits to UGA

DB Shaq Wiggins committed to UGA (Photo submitted by Shaq Wiggins)

Shaq Wiggins, who is a candidate to be the state’s No. 1 prospect at DB for 2013, committed to UGA on Friday.

The 5-foot-10, 160-pounder from Sandy Creek High School picked the Bulldogs among a dozen offers, including Tennessee, Michigan, Ohio State, Wake Forest and Ole Miss.

“It felt right; it’s the place for me,” Wiggins told the AJC.

Wiggins is known for being an outstanding “cover corner” and was matched up every day in practice this past season at Sandy Creek against senior WR JaQuay Williams (signed with Auburn) and sophomore WR Demarre Kitt (early offer from UGA).

“Georgia is a getting a really good person, a real good kid – that’s the most important thing,” Sandy Creek coach Chip Walker told the AJC.  “Next they are getting a guy who will go up there and work hard to be successful.

“Shaq is a guy that can lock up with anybody. I know the whole deal about being a ‘cover corner’ and covering big wideouts and all that good stuff. I’m going to tell you this: Shaq Wiggins had a full year of covering 6-foot-3, 200-pound JaQuay Williams and 6-foot-2, 185-pound Demarre Kitt. You’re talking about two SEC wide receivers and Shaq more than held his own.

“I think this whole thing about size is a little overrated. If they can cover, they can cover. Shaq can cover.”

RELATED: UGA’s basketball team picked up a commitment with point guard JJ Frazier of Faith Baptist Christian of Ludowici, Ga. , on Friday, according to UGASports.com’s Dan McDonald. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound junior picked UGA over Jacksonville.  Frazier is averaging 27.8 points and 5.7 assists this season as a junior. Note: UGA has room this year to sign one more high school senior, or a prospect from prep school or junior college … Football: Juwaan Williams, the quarterback who led Tucker High School to the state championship last year and was offered by Georgia Tech at QB on Thursday, said he was offered at WR by Florida State on Friday.

UGA commits for 2013

  1. RB Derrick Henry, 6-3, 230, Yulee, Fla.
  2. QB Brice Ramsey, 6-3, 190, Camden County HS
  3. S Tray Matthews, 6-2, 205, Newnan HS
  4. DB Shaq Wiggins, 5-10, 160, Sandy Creek

Why would anyone need a cover corner anymore. That thing they call a forward pass is just a fad.

Hahah those are not SEC Wide Receivers. One guy SIGNED to play in the SEC but he has done nothing in the SEC. The other guy wants to be an SEC WR in a few years. Damn some good coach speak.

Big Crimson 75 it is too bad the state of AL doesn’t have the recruting talent that Ga does. Your coach will always have to go after the recruits in talent rich Ga because the Al recruits are not as talented and too dump to get in school.

Envious that PJ can’t sign top recruits? Don’t worry after having another medicore year in a bad conference, losing big to UGA and a bowl game tech will fire PJ and possibly hire a coach with some experience coaching on BCS level.

This just in: Franklin said that this young man has no character because he once saw Vandy lose to Wake Forest on TV and then committed to UGA. Meanwhile, Saban has promised him a job if he will play for him in 2015. Meanwhile, Wisconsin is complaining because Meyer was thought to be ethical but then they met him. Life is rough these days in the NCAA…

48 that sounds pretty. What does the 247 cost? I don’t really care to pay because most of that info will be on the TV shows radio shows on on these free blogs soon enough. I don’t freak out that much over recruits. I wait until they get on the field to worry about how they fit.

If Obama could get the NCAA to lift the amount of players that Alabama could sign in a year, the way he gives players and girlfriends of players jobs unemployment would go away by next years signing day.
