Brice Ramsey: Alabama’s Nick Saban has eyes on UGA’s prized QB recruit

Nick Saban thinks UGA QB commit Brice Ramsey is "the best QB he's seen so far" for 2013. Saban is considered one of college football's top talent evaluators (AP photo)

Alabama’s Nick Saban has his eyes on UGA’s top football recruit for 2013.

The coach of the BCS champions recently made a personal appearance to let QB Brice Ramsey of Camden County High School know that he’s a priority for the Crimson Tide.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Ramsey has been committed to UGA since last summer, since before the start of his junior year. Alabama, along with UGA, Florida, Florida State, Clemson and Notre Dame, had actually offered Ramsey as a sophomore.

Saban is aware that Ramsey is pledged to UGA but isn’t fazed.

“Coach Saban talked to me a while, and then talked to our principal for a while,” Camden County coach Jeff Herron told the AJC. “Then [Alabama] wanted Brice to call over the weekend so they could make the formal scholarship offer from the University of Alabama. I wasn’t surprised. Brice committed to Georgia and he still is committed there. But in today’s world of recruiting, that doesn’t mean other people are going to stop recruiting you.”

Elite Georgia talent is a top priority for Saban, who finished last week with the nation’s No. 1-ranked recruiting class, according to Rivals, ESPN and 247Sports (Scout had Alabama at No. 2). Alabama’s 2012 class featured eight players from Georgia, and the trend is expected to expand for next year.

“Coach Saban felt like Brice was an extremely good quarterback, he said he was ‘the best one he had seen so far,’” Herron said. “All the college coaches that watch Brice’s junior tape say the same thing: ‘Brice has a big-time arm. Physically, he has got all the tools.’ He’s a good kid and a smart kid. He doesn’t have any negatives that I’m aware of.”

While Ramsey has never wavered on his UGA commitment, he has visited other schools just in case there are any coaching changes before he signs the paperwork in February 2013. He missed one of Alabama’s junior days because of basketball but will likely tour Alabama within the next month or so. UGA coach Mark Richt also stopped by Camden County recently to observe Ramsey’s basketball practice.

“[Richt] still feels pretty good about Brice coming to the University of Georgia,” Herron said.

Herron said he also talked to Vanderbilt coach James Franklin the other day – not really about Ramsey but recruiting in general. “Looking at the kid from Tucker [Josh Dawson], Frank said yeah he committed to Vanderbilt last summer but he signed with Georgia. Being committed these days is not going to stop people from recruiting you … I, personally, wish it would and they [college coaches] probably do, too. But that’s not the reality of it.”

Back to Ramsey: He is UGA’s most important recruit for next year because of two reasons: He’s a potential top-tier quarterback, and he may be the Bulldogs’ best recruiter after Mark Richt for 2013 targets. Ramsey is working hard to persuade other top talent to join him in Athens. He is a good friend of RB Derrick Henry of Yulee, Fla., [committed to UGA], and WR Tramal Terry of Goose Creek, S.C., [de-committed from UGA but still considering the Bulldogs] stayed at Ramsey’s house last summer while the two trained together. Camden County has at least three more D1 prospects that are juniors – OL JP Vonashek, WR-DB JJ Green and LB Jarrad Davis.

Can the AJC go one day w/o writing about ALABAMA/CNS? Just one day lol….. I promise you the Jawja program is RARELY discussed and for good reason… If you had this much focus on your own program, possibly you could ascend to Bama levels, even for just one season.

As far as recruits and their families dissing our program……keep wishing it aint going to happen.

Ga fb the most underachieving program in all the land…

What a stupid and absolutely moronic post. The AJC has about 10-20 articles to every Bama article. You Bama people like to think everyone thinks about you that much but that’s all in your pathetic minds. We could care less what goes on in that cow dung smelling state and it’s football program. I know one thing. Saban WON’T get Brice Ramsey.

It is February and just days after signing day (some still not signed)……..for heavens sake…….every talented recruit in the south….committed or not committed…..is being recruited by Saban and just about every other SEC program. “Committed” means absolutely nothing right now. Practice in the spring will……and does mean something.

Anyone watch Kentuckly play Florida last night. Florida has a very good basketball team….and they looked like a high school team when matched up against Kentucky. I have never seen so much talent on one basketball team…..and most of them are freshmen. And Kentucky sent freshmen to the NBA last year. Talk about an elite sports program…..Kentucky is. Too bad they also play football.

Yep. He will go visit Bama and make them think that he might consider them but Georgia has been on Ramsey for quite a while and Saban has no chance of turning him. Wasting his time. Name a starting #1 drafted QB in the NFL from Bama since the 1960’s. Can’t think of one. Name a #1 QB that Nick Saban has put in the NFL. Can’t think of one. If you are defensive player or a RB you might think of Bama. If you are a QB you think more of UGA and Mark Richt.

As a young qb you want to play in a pro system…you want to play for a head man that was a qb himself…you want to play for a coach that has helped guide to other young men to heisman trophy and Natl Championships…you want to play for the guy who can help make you the #1 pick in the NFL draft…..Saban should do his homework….save the heartache…

Recruits that thump their chests about going to bama or ga. Why not do something intelligent, and find out what happened to recruits in the past that played their hearts out and asses off accomplish in the real world. Many were given an football education that wasn”t of any value. Note: Moreno arrested for drunk driving just a few days ago. And Alabama snubbed recruits that commited to them, but Bana didn”t commit to them but opted for five stars athletes. Saban thinks he is a star and will use anyone for fodder.

Well if he wants to take his skills to the next level after college, Saban’s QBs haven’t done all that well unless you call riding the pine and collecting a nice paycheck successful. They’re good at calling out their teammates though and seem to have a high opinion of themselves. Just ask the Jets! Come to Athens son. If you get hurt Saban will cast you aside like moldy bread. Come to where the coaching staff preaches integrity AND PRACTICES IT! Saban is not a man of honor!

The kid from Carver was told that UGA had decided not to take a QB in that class that year. When they finally decided they would they went back to him first to offer and he had decided to go elsewhere. UGA then offered Hutson Mason. Taylor was committed to Saban for almost a year and SAban accepted that commitment which is different. UGA is not banned from Carver. Crowell came from Carver. Get your facts right nimrod.

DJ Shockley has still played in a NFL Game.
Weinke was selected by the Carolina Panthers in the fourth round (106th overall pick) of the 2001 NFL Draft. In 2001, he was the starter when the Panthers finished with a 1-15 record.
Kennell has been the BEST of the list that RICHT coached.
STAFFORD was more by Bobo and Stafford didn’t learn much from Bobo. hell he called many of the plays over what Bobo wanted. So pleas don’t count Stafford.
