LB Beau Hankins commits and signs with Georgia Tech

Beau Hankins both committed and signed with Georgia Tech on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-2, 225-pound linebacker from Birmingham, Ala., picked the Yellow Jackets over Arkansas, Wake Forest, and Central Florida among his 26 offers, which also included Stanford, Penn State and Iowa State.

“I think with his visit to Georgia Tech,  they kind of sold him and he felt like that was the place to be,” said his coach Terrence Amos.

Hankins is a 4.0 student who is ranked No. 1 academically in his class and a candidate to be school valedictorian. He will play ILB at Georgia Tech.

Congratulations on all of your hard work to get to this point, Beau. Welcome to the Flats. Look forward to seeing you on the field, but also congratulating you again when you walk across that stage and get your Tech degree. Well done, young man.

Hankins was named Alabama 6A Defensive Player of the Year for the 2011 season. It was quite an accomplishment especially considering his team, the Mustangs, were only 3-7 on the season.

Kid should do well at ILB. Has the size, violent a the point of contact with blocker and is excellent at shedding block and making strong tackles. Welcome, young man>

Great education? So you’re betting he’s one in the minority that will graduate?

19 ACT?

Glad to see the young man in a Jackets uniform next year, but according to Rivals, he scored a 19 on the ACT. It is a bit surprising a 4.0 student who is a valedictorian candidate would score so low. Perhaps he is not the best test-taker? I hope so, we could use smart players leading the defense at MLB.

No guarantee that he will graduate, that is a personal decision he will have to make. What is guaranteed is that if he applies himself academically, he will get a top notch education. Please stop drawing a conclusion between a young man’s commitment to education and the quality of the educational opportunity he is given. There is no relation.

Is that it for this year, or might we sign one or two more? We still have slots, but maybe they will go to walkons who have earned them.

Hey, it’s that 4 start, 4.0 GPA recruit that we’ve been looking for. Of course one report said we signed 20 guys all 5 star with 4.0 GPA’s.

Seriously, our highest rated recruit is a WR and we have 2 other WR in the class. Does this mean CPJ is going to start throwing the ball more? Gotta believe Vad is going to be the man.

I think his low test score is directly related to the less than stellar public schools system in Alabama. But it looks like the kid can play some ball.

Born2Buzz are you serious? That highly rated 4 star WR was recruited as a QB. Do you even follow GT recruiting.

Old Bind Dawg – Are you comparing the “less than stellar” public schools in Alabama to the stellar, high quality public education system here in Georgia? Don’t look now, but Alabama is ranked ahead of us.

Justin Thomas is not a WR. He is a QB.

I was really hoping Hankins signed with GT. I have been reading the local press coverage on him and he is a bigger/faster Julian Burnett. He will play inside, not outside.

CPJ & CAG aren’t inexperienced new jacks they’re are seasoned coaches who both have dveloped systems of coaching over the Decades. They know how to recruit for their systems and coach their players. In a reletively short period of time The Institute will have one of if not the best secondary and linebacking corp in the ACC. The Institute will fly under the radar again cause of recruiting rankings and be considered to finish 3rd or 4th in the ACC Atlantic, but when the season plays out the Institute will compete for the title if not win it out right… Now the basketball program on the other hand.

A real solid class with some excellent athletes! I do think the Jackets will be throwing the ball more which only will make their running game better. And with Year 3 of CAG’s 3-4 defense maturing, I believe the Jackets will have a fine year in 2012. Congrats to young Hankins and all of today’s signees.

I’ve been following Beau’s recruitment for a while now. I wondered why Alabama and/or Auburn weren’t in on him more. Maybe he just wanted a change of scenery…can’t blame him for that. He seems to have a lot of potential : academics, size, speed, attitude. Welcome to the Flats , young man. Even if you don’t make it to the NFL, check and see what some of our student- athletes are doing when they graduate……lots of opportunities as a Tech grad in Atlanta and throughout the country.
