Will Adams: One of Georgia Tech’s top recruits headed to Auburn on visit

After wrestling with the decision all day, Georgia Tech OL commit Will Adams decided to take a last-minute visit to Auburn this weekend.

“I’m about to leave for Auburn in about an hour or so,” Adams told the AJC on Friday evening. “I’m still committed to Georgia Tech but I’m taking a visit to Auburn.”

The 6-foot-6, 280-pound offensive lineman from Sandy Creek High School has been committed to Georgia Tech since last summer. Adams said he got last-minute offers from Auburn and UGA on Thursday, and has decided to visit with the Tigers on the final recruiting weekend before signing day.

Adams said he talked multiple times on Friday with Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson. “There were a lot of things we talked about, and there are a lot of things that went into my decision to visit Auburn. I’ll talk more about it later.”

Did Johnson tell Adams that he risked losing his …

Dalvin Tomlinson has made the decision — Is it Georgia Tech, Alabama or UGA?

Dalvin Tomlinson finally made his college decision on Friday, according to his coach.

The 6-foot-3, 270-pound defensive lineman from Henry County High School has Georgia Tech, UGA and Alabama at his finalists.

So which school is it?

“Dalvin has picked a school but it’s a secret,” Henry County coach Mike Rozier told the AJC. “His [family] doesn’t even know where he’s going to go, and that’s a fact. I was over at his house this morning with a [TV crew].”

“But Dalvin has his school. You can tell by looking at him. He has got a big smile back on his face. And he hasn’t been smiling a lot lately. He seems a lot more relaxed and happy.”

When will Dalvin reveal his secret? At 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Dalvin’s “secret” is …

UGA threw everything they had at one of Auburn’s top recruits on Thursday.

The Bulldogs paraded a line of football coaches, led by Mark Richt, through Sandy Creek High School in order to woo and impress JaQuay Williams, the state’s top WR prospect. He has been committed to Auburn since last summer but is considering flipping to UGA by next week’s signing day.

UGA’s recruiting tactic turned heads everywhere at the school.

“Georgia had them all in today to give it one last shot,” Sandy Creek coach Chip Walker told the AJC. “They are making one last push for him.”

Richt brought along an entourage of assistants – offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, wide receivers coach Tony Ball and recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner.

“I think it went good,” Walker said. “JaQuay had time to talk to them for a little bit. I thought it was good day …

OL Will Adams, who admitted that he was a lifelong UGA fan before committing to Georgia Tech last summer, said that he was offered a last-minute scholarship by the Bulldogs on Thursday.

The 6-foot-6, 280-pound offensive lineman plays at Sandy Creek, the same high school as WR JaQuay Williams – who is a longtime Auburn commitment that UGA is trying to flip before next week’s signing day.

An entourage of UGA coaches, led by Mark Richt, showed up at Sandy Creek on Wednesday to visit with JaQuay. They also reportedly made a last-second offer to Adams.

“It’s true,” Adams said in the text message about the UGA offer.

There were rumors that Adams may talk to Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson about making a visit to another school this weekend — not UGA but Auburn.  Adams declined an interview request. “Not today. There’s a lot going with me as far as …

(Note: Story updated at 11:40am on Friday)

Whatever the South Carolina Gamecock coaches said to Chris Moody on Thursday, it worked.

Moody, a defensive back from Henry County High School, confirmed to the AJC on Friday afternoon that he was leaving within the hour for a last-minute official visit to South Carolina. Moody declined further comment.

It’s a surprise because Moody committed to Vanderbilt after his official visit there last weekend.

However, South Carolina hasn’t given up on the idea of flipping Moody and dispatched defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward to his high school on Thursday. After all, before Moody committed to Vanderbilt, South Carolina was considered the school to beat.

“I have no idea what Coach Ward said to Chris but it was good enough to talk him into visiting South Carolina this weekend,” Henry County coach Mike Rozier said. “He’s leaving around noon to go …

One of Georgia Tech’s top football commitments risks losing his scholarship offer if he takes a recruiting trip to Miami this weekend.

Antonio Crawford, a defensive back from Tampa’s Plant High School, has been committed to Georgia Tech since last summer. However, things became complicated for Crawford when Miami coach Al Golden showed up at his school on Wednesday to both extend a scholarship offer and invitation to visit Miami this weekend.

The 5-foot-11, 184-pound Crawford has some tough decisions to make less than a week away from Wednesday’s signing day.

“Everything has happened so quickly, and I haven’t really had a chance to think about it a lot yet,” Crawford said on Thursday night. “I know I’m definitely considering the University of Miami. But, as of right now, I’m still committed to Georgia Tech.”

Josh Harvey-Clemons: Not your typical recruiting trip with UGA’s Mark Richt

The recruiting trail can lead to some unusual places for college football coaches.

Some of UGA coach Mark Richt’s visit with recruit Josh Harvey-Clemons was briefly at a Valdosta jail on Wednesday night when the 5-star prospect had to help his grandfather with his bail bonds business. The 6-foot-5, 200-pound linebacker from Lowndes High School is ranked as Georgia’s No. 1 prospect by ESPN and lists the Bulldogs, Florida and Florida State as his leaders.

“I’m sure this was an experience that Coach Mark Richt will never forget,” said Josh’s uncle, Roy Hart, with a chuckle. “Coach Richt said ‘I can’t wait to read the headlines about this one.’”

There are never-ending surprises on the recruiting trail for all college coaches, including Mark Richt (AJC)

Here’s the surreal story from a couple of Josh’s family members: The evening got off to a normal start for Richt. He was in Valdosta to make an “in-home” visit with Harvey-Clemons and give his final sales …

Is Georgia Tech in danger of losing one of its top recruits less than a week away from signing day?

DB Antonio Crawford, who has been committed to Georgia Tech since last summer, will take an official visit to Miami this weekend, according to his Facebook page. Crawford wrote that he had been offered a football scholarship by Miami and he “was going to be in MIAMI this weekend to visit The U.”

The 5-foot-11, 184-pounder is from Tampa football powerhouse of Plant High School, which produced UGA talents Aaron Murray and Orson Charles.

Georgia Tech did an intensive evaluation of Crawford at camp last summer, deciding to offer a few days later – with Crawford committing on the spot. At the time, Crawford picked the Yellow Jackets over Iowa State and Florida International.

It was good scouting by Georgia Tech because it took other schools until Crawford’s senior season to notice him,  eventually leading to the reported recruiting …

You know those rumors about longtime Auburn WR commit JaQuay Williams flipping to UGA?

They could shoot to the moon on Thursday.

UGA coach Mark Richt is expected to visit Sandy Creek High School on Thursday to speak with Williams, who is ranked as the state’s No. 1 prospect at WR.

“Honestly, all of this has kind of surprised me; I didn’t think Georgia would still be in it,” Sandy Creek coach Chip Walker told the AJC.

Georgia got involved very late with Williams, who committed to Auburn over Ohio State last summer. UGA only offered a few months ago and convinced him to take an official visit last weekend.

One day after returning from UGA, Williams had Auburn’s Gene Chizik waiting for him after class at Sandy Creek on Monday. It was Auburn’s recent coaching changes that caused Williams to look around.

“I think Georgia has some really good things to sell to JaQuay,” Walker …

Florida may be next to offer ex-Georgia Tech recruit

DE Junior Gnonkonde has rebounded after having his scholarship withdrawn from Georgia Tech (AJC)

DE Junior Gnonkonde has rebounded after having his scholarship offer withdrawn from Georgia Tech (AJC)

The Florida Gators may be on the brink of offering a football scholarship to ex-Georgia Tech commit Junior Gnonkonde.

The 6-foot-5, 225-pound defensive end from Lanier County High School was the first commitment of Georgia Tech’s recruiting class last February. However, Gnonkonde had his scholarship offer from the Yellow Jackets withdrawn last week after being told that his test scores were too low.

Gnonkonde has been a hot commodity ever since. Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson personally called Central Florida coach George O’Leary to get Gnonkonde a football offer without UCF ever seeing him. Since then, Gnonkonde has added offers from North Carolina, Wake Forest, Syracuse, South Carolina, Marshall, and Louisiana Tech, according to Lanier County athletics director John White, who is also Gnonkonde’s legal guardian.

And then there’s Florida.
