Markuss Eligwe: Changes mind, signs at 11 with FSU or Cal

AJC Super 11 LB Markuss Eligwe will delay signing until Feb. 6. UGA is considered a longshot but anything is possible in recruiting (AJC)

AJC Super 11 LB Markuss Eligwe will delay signing until Feb. 6. UGA is considered a longshot but anything is possible in recruiting (AJC)

UGA LB target Markuss Eligwe has decided to postpone signing his college scholarship papers for a few days.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound linebacker from Stone Mountain High School has been committed to Florida State since last spring. He took an official visit to UGA last month. Eligwe also took a recruiting trip to Cal last week – which is why Eligwe is postponing.

“Cal is a great place and I had a great visit,” Eligwe told the AJC. “I was expecting good things, and it blew me away truthfully. So I’m going to give myself another few days to think about it.”

Rather than sign on Wednesday, Eligwe said it was likely he will wait until Monday.

“It’s my life, and I’ve got make the right decision. With whatever college I sign with, I will be spending the next 4-5 years there. I believe I can wait four more days to sign without hurting anybody.”

FSU coach Jimbo Fisher and assistant Dameyune Craig might’ve had their feelings hurt when Eligwe gave them the news over the telephone on Monday.

“I mean, they’re coaches, and this is recruiting,” Eligwe said. “Of course, they weren’t happy about it. But it’s something they have to put up with while I figure things out.”

Is Eligwe still committed to FSU? “Most definitely. I’m the only linebacker commit, and have been the only linebacker committed. They need me. But I’ve got to think about everything before I sign. This is a big decision that will affect the rest of my life.”

Then there’s UGA. Eligwe took an official visit with the Bulldogs last month and said he missed a call from the coaches over the weekend.

Could UGA be in the mix? Could Eligwe be one of the “mystery” recruits that everyone is talking about? “No, not unless I wake up and something like ‘Go Dawgs’ is on my mind. Not at all.”

What happened with UGA? “Georgia just isn’t for me. I felt that way a long time ago.”

Cal friggin’ Berkely can come to GEORGIA and and make a strong run at Elite Recruits that are also Academic Qualifiers, but GT can’t even get on these local Recruits Radar.

CPJ is doing something horribly wrong for ND, Stanford, Vandy and Cal-Berkely to make the kinds of inroads in the the Metro Atlanta Area for elite-level Recruits, and we’re supposed to believe that WE HAVE TO go to effin’ AUSTRALIA to find FB recruits.

Recruits like this can give Cal-Berkely a 2nd look but won’t give GT & CPJ the time of day, how can CPJ be that bad of a Recruiter in a City like Atlanta?

It is a big decision indeed and perhaps there was some greater context he was speaking in, but man….if taken at face value that is some serious entitlement going on. Where does this sort of narcissism come from at such an early age when in the grand scheme, these kids haven’t accomplished all that much apart from hitting the physical/athletics genetics lottery in most cases? I guess it is the nature of a world with recruiting sites, 100k seat college stadiums, ESPN, etc.,

You guys need to relax. The kid is only half right though, this decision not only affect his next 4-5 years, it affects his whole life so give him a break. He should take all the time he needs. I’m sure he’ll weigh the pros and cons of each and make the best decision for himself. Quit being spiteful old losers for once and say good luck kid.

Sounds like his opinion of himself is inflated. CONCEIT is hard to deal with when you are coaching. I would tell him if he isn’t signed by monday FSU may have to look at other options. FSU doesn’t have to put up with it unless they want to.

It would be a shame if the kid did not get to go to the school that he chooses due to the class being filled up. I can understand his concern about picking the right school, but he might have to take his fourth, fifth, or sixth choice if he waits too long.

Michael Carvell

January 30th, 2012

@Tree, maybe a concern for most kids but not Markuss. I’m sure plenty of schools will wait as long as it takes.

In 2008, Terrelle Pryor held a news conference on Signing Day to announce that he had NO decision. He waited until a month later to choose Ohio State.
“I think it’s a sense of entitlement these kids have now because of the attention given to them,” Tom Lemming said of players who delay decisions until after Signing Day.

Only with the AJC does the fact someone is a Univ of Ga target make a headline over that person being a commitment to FSU. Tells me being a target of the Dawgs is more prestigious than being an FSU commitment. I agree it sounds strange but it’s the AJC, their headline says it all.

By all accounts the young man had an unbelievable trip to Cal, fell in love with the place. His Mother also loved the trip, Cal and the Bay area.

To answer those GT fans, Fish Fry and his staff are dreadful recruiters. Instate prospects do not view the GT program as credible, bigtime, nor going places, it’s that simple. Fish Fry’s program is slipping further and further behind. Vanderbilt has recruited much better locally and will sign a better group of prospects from the state of Georgia than will GT.

The people dissing this kid, well, you are thinking in narrow-minded terms. Recruits are much more informed and savvy today verses 20-30 years ago and way before that. It’s no sense of entitlement. The sponsors and the fans are the ones responsible for all these all-star games, visiting recruiting message boards, and a national holiday called National Signing Day…lol. So I guess we need to return to the days when recruits were just naive and hopped at the first big-time offer that was on the table and be grateful for the scraps. The NCAA, the schools, and the coaches come out on top in the end anyway. Get it through your head: Once he signs that paperwork, it’s over. Any school or coach can ditch this kid at anytime they feel, LOI or not.

It also kills me when people want other programs acknowledged on this blog. Once again: AJC = Atlanta Journal and Constitution. This isn’t MAXPrep or Schmidt’s. Wow, here is a picky question: Since he gave a verbal to FSU, why does rivals even list who else offered and when he takes a visit. Why does he still have stars if he has already committed? See, two picky but unnecessary observations…lol

Guys, I’m going to be starting my own recruiting website for the 2013 class. Rankings will be based partly on talent and partly on the political views of the recruits and/or majority of people in their state. If past years are any indication, red states produce the most talent.

“College Recruiting is becoming a bit of a joke.”

The blame lies w/the Obama administration, Pelosi and Reid. We also can’t ignore the impact that the mainstream liberal media has had on it. Newt Gingrich has a foolproof plan to address not only this issue, but also one that will fix the BCS.

The state of Georgia has been a major pipeline of talent for Saban and his staff at Alabama and that figures to continue into the 2013 recruiting cycle, with one of the state’s top stars, Reuben Foster, already committed to the Tide for 2013. Alabama extended an offer over the weekend to Camden County quarterback Brice Ramsey, a 6-foot-3, 197-pound signal caller who is currently committed to Georgia. The four-star quarterback told 247Sports that while he remains committed to the Bulldogs, he plans on visiting Tuscaloosa in the near future after receiving an offer over the phone from Saban on Sunday night.

“I definitely want to go out there to Alabama and see what it’s like. I went out there for the first LSU game and it was kind of surreal. I liked the atmosphere of the game and the coaching staff was real nice. All I really saw was the atmosphere because we got there right at game time. I want to see what it’s like normally, I guess. I’ll probably go up there in the next couple weeks.”

Stay the heck out of Camden County, that’s where my family’s from….lol. I’ll say this, Ramsey fits what Saban wants to do on offense more so than the Dawgs. In all honesty, and this isn’t hate, but if he flips, it will be no big deal. CMR and BoBo need to invest the time and effort in finding an elite-level QB in order to run the finesse offense they prefer. He’s only had one in 11 seasons. By elite level, I mean cannon arm, 6′2 or better, great passer coming out of High School who has a Tom Brady or Cam Newton swagg. Oh, did I mention Cam Newton, the TE again…SMDH
