Chester Brown: Will ex-UGA recruit sign with Central Florida? (UPDATED)

UGA-turned-UCF commit Chester Brown of Hinesville, Ga. (247Sports.com)

UGA-turned-UCF commit Chester Brown of Hinesville, Ga. (247Sports.com)

  • BREAKING NEWS: Chester Brown’s coach told the AJC’s Chip Towers on Monday morning that Chester Brown’s recruitment is “still kind on open.” Go here to read the full story.

Ex-UGA recruit Chester Brown, who was forced to withdraw his longtime commitment to the Bulldogs due to an immigration issue, pledged to Central Florida on Sunday, said a report.

The 6-foot-5, 340-pound offensive lineman from Bradwell Institute high school committed to Central Florida at the end of his official visit, according to UCFSports.com’s Brandon Helwig.

“I went back to the hotel Saturday night and had a meeting with my brothers,” Brown told the website. “I called my parents and they said, ‘If you feel this is the place for you and you feel peace in your heart then go ahead and tell them you’re going to sign.’ … This morning I went to Coach (George) O’Leary’s office. He was actually surprised when I told him I was going to sign on Wednesday.”

Brown earned a football scholarship to UGA at last summer’s Dawg Night prospect and committed to the Bulldogs on the spot. He was one of the most enthusiastic members of UGA’s 2012 recruiting class until recently learning about a controversial Georgia Board of Regents policy that bans the enrollment of undocumented students. Brown was raised in the U.S. by Somaon parents who allegedly are illegal immigrants, reported the AJC’s Chip Towers.

The AJC’s Jeff Schultz wrote a super column on the dilemma that you can read by clicking here.

Back to Brown and UCF: O’Leary has an interesting talent assessment on Chester Brown: Rather than offensive line, he thinks the big guy has a better skill set to be a college defensive lineman, according to UCFSports.com.

Meanwhile, the loss of Brown due to an immigration policy is a stinging blow for UGA. With less than 72 hours from Wednesday’s signing day, the Bulldogs have only 16 commitments and room to sign as many as 12 more. You can read more of an overview by going here.

Check back for updates

[9:30 a.m. Monday] The AJC’s Chip Towers spoke with Bradwell Institute coach Jim Walsh, who said the Brown was “still kind open” with his recruitment. “I’m not sure of the accuracy of that,” Walsh said of Brown’s UCF commitment. “We’ve had some recent things going on.” Click here to read Chip’s report

Go ahead UGA fans, make fun of Central Florida. But we whooped you in the Liberty Bowl, we have better weather, better looking co-eds, better facilities, definitely better coaches and we kicked your tail with recruiting Chester Brown. He could’ve stayed at Georgia and waited it out, but he’s coming to UCF to play for a winner!

Did you even read prior articles stating that UGA had been trying “for a while” to resolve Brown’s lack of citizenship paperwork. This problem didn’t occur over night. The university was doing everything they could to keep him as a commit.

Crimson Crush,

You sure run your mouth off a lot when you have little knowledge about the subject at hand. Read the available information about the Chester Brown situation and then, it might get through that thick skull of yours, that he didn’t meet the Laws, Georgia has about immigration policies. You need to go to AL.COM, and argue with your fellow fans and Auburn. Your comments aren’t appreciated as this is a Georgia paper’s blog here, not the Podunk press you are used to there.

How did you come to the conclusion that Georgia fan’s wanted anything other than Brown becoming a DAWG. I can assure you 99% of the Georgia Fan’s wanted Brown because he really wanted to be a DAWG . A freak immigration situation eliminated him that 99% of the real Dawg fan’s hated to see.
Stop thinking that most of the immature , children on this blog that say dumb, insensitive thing’s are Georgia fan’s. Most of the time’s it is GT supporter’s or very young children that could interact with adult’s if they wanted to. If there was a way we could see who was making the comments most of the blogger’s that you are listening to would be to much of a coward to say what they say on this blog. By you listening to them say’s a lot about you.
Real Dawg fan’s totally ignore blogger’s that don’t respect other’s opinion’s where they agree with those opinion’s or not as long as those opinion’s are stated in a civil way.

Destin Dawg,

Ole CC is even worse when you consider the kid actually one of the first people to have a comment and always negative when an article does come out. He has absolutely no idea what he is talking about in this case, so I guess ignorance is indeed bliss in his case.
It really boils down to whether or not he could meet the requirements to play in this state and he couldn’t. I don’t think it is a case of everybody that is a UGA fan turning against this young man. It is a simple fact that his folks can’t product a birth certificate or a legal document saying he is a legal U.S. citizen. It should be relatively easy to produce the required documents, so one has to assume that maybe there is indeed a problem in that area. The laws were made for a reason, and this one is pretty clear.
Now as for your citizenship test there. What in the world has that got to do with this particular case? Let me answer that for you, “Absolutely Nothing”. The issue isn’t about the folks born in the U.S. that have a birth certificate having to take a citizenship test. It has to do with a person, not being able to prove that he is a citizen, of the United States. If it were just the fact that he had lost the records, or the certificate, he could have easily gotten a replacement, be it from California or where ever it might be. No one is saying that he isn’t a great kid either, or UGA didn’t want him, but the simple fact is he is not able to prove U.S. citizenship, as required to get a scholarship in OUR state. Really quite simple, now isn’t it?

UCF, you are another funny guy, assuming that is what you are. You whipped our butts in recruiting Chester Brown. Where do you people come from. We had a verbal from him and you didn’t bother to even throw your hat in the ring, until the citizenship thing became a factor. If the kid had any decent options, you wouldn’t have ever been in the discussion. Go back to your teams own blog, if they eve3wn have one. You are too stupid to comment on this one.

It still does not matter if they cannot find his birth certificate or any other paperwork verifying his identity. Remember the Patriot Act and the Dept. of Homeland Security? Whether he is a legal immigrant or not (apparently he is NOT American Samoan), you can’t take out a state grant in aid without some form of verification in the system in today’s climate. Other than his parents, schoolmates, and his coach, who knows who Chester Brown really is? In a perfect world, it should not matter what your “identity” is because you are a simple human being. But this isn’t our current reality. I wish Chester Brown luck but his parents created this mess in order to avoid adhering to certain U.S. and State laws.

slydog

P.S. I did some research, Georgia’s new immigration law does not preclude, and I quote, “U.S. Nationals” or in this case, American Samoans, from attending state universities, colleges, and trade/ technical schools. The only true right they lack is being able to vote in our elections. They also have a “rubber stamp” process of becoming full-fledged citizens. I will take a guess: It sounds like a member of the US Army created a child with a woman from Samoa, and they both wrongly assumed that this would automatically make Chester a citizen. But at time of birth, you must declare citizenship or visit the local US embassy or consulate to apply for this right (like changing your name on a birth certificate). I’m willing to bet his birth name isn’t even Chester Brown.

Alabama has illegal immigrant policies so strict they are leaving Alabama. This entire country has similar issues and these nitwits take this issue and turn it into a race issue. This country has enough race problems, without them being made worse, by lying Alabama supporters, but more so, by UGA haters, just because we love UGA. So, in reality, that makes those who are using the race card, the real racists. That is the problem with real racists. They do not see the real racism in their own lives, because they justify their racist views in their own feeble racist minds.

Crimson, right now Bama is on top of college football, congrats on the success. But not too long ago, Bama was on the bottom, for cheating, the buying of players. Bama is killing recruiting as well, and dispite the fans wanting championships, players are looking for early playing time, and getting to the NFL. Bama is having so much success at recruiting, it makes one wonder if they aren’t up to their old tricks. I realize they have gotten more creative with hadning out the money, the computer glitch that gave football players an average of 40 extra books per semester. Sure glitches can happen, but isn’t it odd that it affected no one but scholarshipped football players, such a small percentage of the student body and it affected almost all of them, very odd glitch. And those bama players that spend their free time signing autographs at a booster’s clothing store, autographed jerseys at that, just being good citizens right? I mean when you come from a single parent household with a nurse, you can support two kids, drive a nice SUV and upkeep on two homes from an RN income right? Someone will tire of what Bama is doing, turn them in again, probably Petrino,, bama will go on probation, again, and then you will be here crying about wanting a level playing field, which is the absolute last thing any bama fan wants because without the cheating Bama is Tulane.

Ryan,

No, the problem isn’t the law. The problem is the people that take advantage of hard working Americans. If people acted in the way of laws we wouldn’t be living in a society like we are today, but one that doesn’t have a murder or rape on television every night, or educational programs going down the tubes, rising tuition costs, and a government that wants to tax more to afford those that shouldn’t be here. It can all be satisfied by filling out the correct paper work and passing a test on what makes America the greatest county on Earth and that the world has ever seen. All Chester and his family had to do was do the right thing. I will not give up what makes this country great for one recruit. I wish him the best, but would rather see him become legal and contribute to society.

Everyone go to MRSEC.COM

There is a good article about Bama and an interview that is on YouTube. A recruits mother says that Bama has offered jobs to the player and to his girlfriend in Nick Saban’s office. Last week a recruit said that Saban wanted to grayshirt him and was going to find him a job.

Bama is already on the “habitual violator” list of the NCAA so we’ll see what happens with all these new allegations.

Well, I know UGA is gonna miss this kid once they see what he is capable of. I remember when I was a freshie at Tech there was a d-lineman by the name if Joe Anoai (sp?) and he was an incredible athlete. When we played Notre Dame in Atlanta he hurdled the running back that was pass blocking and sacked Brady Quinn, not bad for a guy pushing 280 lbs. Simoans are people you want on the line, just saying.

The law in question is particularly puzzling to me because the BoR only found 512 illegal immigrants in a system that has well over a hundred thousand students. In a game of numbers, this is an incredibly low percentage. Also, young Mr. Brown, as well as any of the other athletes at any college, are very rarely held to the same standards that a normal applicant is, so yes, it is a body taking up a spot but at the same time I doubt that he is less qualified than any other o-lineman recruit.

The funny thing is that Georgian think that their immigration stance is working, that is why the state is broke and has major budget issue, and they are dipping in all kind of funds like the HOPE fund and the Lottery that was intended for education. The agriculture industry lost lost millions and causing farmers having to shut down or trash their crops, some them may no longer produce as much. Georgia overall education is pretty much at the bottom. Now watch the colleges starting to have issues. It’s like burning your own neighborhood down because you are mad at someone else.

And yes, I realize that the law was made for a good reason and I sure as heck don’t want to pay for an illegal immigrant to play football for my mortal enenmy but the hype around the problem was a bit overdone. I do not disagree with the law, I just think that from a numbers vs. reality standpoint, it was made to look like an epidemic and not a small thing that could be handled rather easily.

omg,

Please provide information on where it states our state is broke. We are actually in better condition that 3/4 of the country, and doing fine. We are having to cut like every other state in the country. Our farmers had a gripe about losing illegals, because a soft American society doesn’t want to work hard anymore to make a living, but I don’t see allowing illegals to continue to pile into our state as the answer. Check medical, education, and the justice system costs of allowing illegals to prey on your state. California is a prime example of it going down the tubes. If you don’t like it, take your show to another state, because the state of Georgia is not broke, and we still house two of the best college educations and individual can receive at Georgia and Georgia Tech.

UCF ‘09 – UCF is a good school. If you want 365 of heat and hummidity and no seasons Florida is a great place and and UCF is in a nice part of the state. Glad the kid is going to get to go to school and play. Hope you all have a good year. Come visit Athens sometime and make a true comparison. I have been to both schools. On the Coed side I would say we are tied. I would say you need to visit to make sure your comparisons are accurate.

Unless CHRISTIAN LEMAY is the real deal, and even if he is, if you guys keep Richt and Bobo, it could be 40 years,or more (rather than just 31), before you see a National Title. Hell, it’s not even that big a deal anymore. We’ve got TWO, LSU has TWO, Florida has TWO, and Auburn ONE. What is wrong with you people? Why don’t you demand more!? There is absolutely no excuse for this incompetence. Y’all need to ask yourself why you put up with it? You shouldn’t have to. and the thing is, you’re not powerless. Hell, quit going up there until changes are made that will make you a legitimate contender, YEAR IN AND YEAR OUT. You deserve it. You have every right to demand it.

How does a person attend public high school with no birth certificate?
How did he get a drivers license?
How did he play youth sports?
Why is he not being deported? with his parents?
My own children who were born here(Georgia, USA), have had to provide a their birth certificate for all these activities. How did he get by?
Why is GHSA not investigating his high school for maybe…expulsion from GHSA?
Why is no one talking about all the rules that were broken along the way?
