Chester Brown: Will ex-UGA recruit sign with Central Florida? (UPDATED)

UGA-turned-UCF commit Chester Brown of Hinesville, Ga. (247Sports.com)

  • BREAKING NEWS: Chester Brown’s coach told the AJC’s Chip Towers on Monday morning that Chester Brown’s recruitment is “still kind on open.” Go here to read the full story.

Ex-UGA recruit Chester Brown, who was forced to withdraw his longtime commitment to the Bulldogs due to an immigration issue, pledged to Central Florida on Sunday, said a report.

The 6-foot-5, 340-pound offensive lineman from Bradwell Institute high school committed to Central Florida at the end of his official visit, according to UCFSports.com’s Brandon Helwig.

“I went back to the hotel Saturday night and had a meeting with my brothers,” Brown told the website. “I called my parents and they said, ‘If you feel this is the place for you and you feel peace in your heart then go ahead and tell them you’re going to sign.’ … This morning I went to Coach (George) O’Leary’s office. He was actually surprised when I told him I was going to sign on Wednesday.”

Brown earned a football scholarship to UGA at last summer’s Dawg Night prospect and committed to the Bulldogs on the spot. He was one of the most enthusiastic members of UGA’s 2012 recruiting class until recently learning about a controversial Georgia Board of Regents policy that bans the enrollment of undocumented students. Brown was raised in the U.S. by Somaon parents who allegedly are illegal immigrants, reported the AJC’s Chip Towers.

The AJC’s Jeff Schultz wrote a super column on the dilemma that you can read by clicking here.

Back to Brown and UCF: O’Leary has an interesting talent assessment on Chester Brown: Rather than offensive line, he thinks the big guy has a better skill set to be a college defensive lineman, according to UCFSports.com.

Meanwhile, the loss of Brown due to an immigration policy is a stinging blow for UGA. With less than 72 hours from Wednesday’s signing day, the Bulldogs have only 16 commitments and room to sign as many as 12 more. You can read more of an overview by going here.

[9:30 a.m. Monday] The AJC’s Chip Towers spoke with Bradwell Institute coach Jim Walsh, who said the Brown was “still kind open” with his recruitment. “I’m not sure of the accuracy of that,” Walsh said of Brown’s UCF commitment. “We’ve had some recent things going on.” Click here to read Chip’s report

Go ahead UGA fans, make fun of Central Florida. But we whooped you in the Liberty Bowl, we have better weather, better looking co-eds, better facilities, definitely better coaches and we kicked your tail with recruiting Chester Brown. He could’ve stayed at Georgia and waited it out, but he’s coming to UCF to play for a winner!

For schools with fans who like to lecture everyone else how they should be handling their recruits Georgia and Georgia Tech are sure sloppy and indifferent in how they handle their own ;-)

Did you even read prior articles stating that UGA had been trying “for a while” to resolve Brown’s lack of citizenship paperwork. This problem didn’t occur over night. The university was doing everything they could to keep him as a commit.

Unfortunately Crimson Crush, you have no clue. All you saw was a headline and wanted to come onto a UGA blog to stir up trouble. I think you are sleep deprived. Go to bed.

Crimson Crush,

You sure run your mouth off a lot when you have little knowledge about the subject at hand. Read the available information about the Chester Brown situation and then, it might get through that thick skull of yours, that he didn’t meet the Laws, Georgia has about immigration policies. You need to go to AL.COM, and argue with your fellow fans and Auburn. Your comments aren’t appreciated as this is a Georgia paper’s blog here, not the Podunk press you are used to there.

By the way … a “Georgia paper’s recruiting blog” , as RnB called it , is worth following as a Bama fan . I want to be here for the next year to watch the insane meltdowns and hysteria in the comment sections over next years crop of players that is already set to leave the state of Georgia for Tuscaloosa ;-)

How did you come to the conclusion that Georgia fan’s wanted anything other than Brown becoming a DAWG. I can assure you 99% of the Georgia Fan’s wanted Brown because he really wanted to be a DAWG . A freak immigration situation eliminated him that 99% of the real Dawg fan’s hated to see.
Stop thinking that most of the immature , children on this blog that say dumb, insensitive thing’s are Georgia fan’s. Most of the time’s it is GT supporter’s or very young children that could interact with adult’s if they wanted to. If there was a way we could see who was making the comments most of the blogger’s that you are listening to would be to much of a coward to say what they say on this blog. By you listening to them say’s a lot about you.
Real Dawg fan’s totally ignore blogger’s that don’t respect other’s opinion’s where they agree with those opinion’s or not as long as those opinion’s are stated in a civil way.

Sure did. He picked Georgia, he loved Georgia, he even tattooed the date he signed with Georgia on his arm. A rule says he can’t enroll at Georgia, so he signs with UCF as a backup. Whew! Sure kicked UGA’s butt on that one.

Destin Dawg,

Ole CC is even worse when you consider the kid actually one of the first people to have a comment and always negative when an article does come out. He has absolutely no idea what he is talking about in this case, so I guess ignorance is indeed bliss in his case.
It really boils down to whether or not he could meet the requirements to play in this state and he couldn’t. I don’t think it is a case of everybody that is a UGA fan turning against this young man. It is a simple fact that his folks can’t product a birth certificate or a legal document saying he is a legal U.S. citizen. It should be relatively easy to produce the required documents, so one has to assume that maybe there is indeed a problem in that area. The laws were made for a reason, and this one is pretty clear.
Now as for your citizenship test there. What in the world has that got to do with this particular case? Let me answer that for you, “Absolutely Nothing”. The issue isn’t about the folks born in the U.S. that have a birth certificate having to take a citizenship test. It has to do with a person, not being able to prove that he is a citizen, of the United States. If it were just the fact that he had lost the records, or the certificate, he could have easily gotten a replacement, be it from California or where ever it might be. No one is saying that he isn’t a great kid either, or UGA didn’t want him, but the simple fact is he is not able to prove U.S. citizenship, as required to get a scholarship in OUR state. Really quite simple, now isn’t it?

UCF, you are another funny guy, assuming that is what you are. You whipped our butts in recruiting Chester Brown. Where do you people come from. We had a verbal from him and you didn’t bother to even throw your hat in the ring, until the citizenship thing became a factor. If the kid had any decent options, you wouldn’t have ever been in the discussion. Go back to your teams own blog, if they eve3wn have one. You are too stupid to comment on this one.

It still does not matter if they cannot find his birth certificate or any other paperwork verifying his identity. Remember the Patriot Act and the Dept. of Homeland Security? Whether he is a legal immigrant or not (apparently he is NOT American Samoan), you can’t take out a state grant in aid without some form of verification in the system in today’s climate. Other than his parents, schoolmates, and his coach, who knows who Chester Brown really is? In a perfect world, it should not matter what your “identity” is because you are a simple human being. But this isn’t our current reality. I wish Chester Brown luck but his parents created this mess in order to avoid adhering to certain U.S. and State laws.

P.S. I did some research, Georgia’s new immigration law does not preclude, and I quote, “U.S. Nationals” or in this case, American Samoans, from attending state universities, colleges, and trade/ technical schools. The only true right they lack is being able to vote in our elections. They also have a “rubber stamp” process of becoming full-fledged citizens. I will take a guess: It sounds like a member of the US Army created a child with a woman from Samoa, and they both wrongly assumed that this would automatically make Chester a citizen. But at time of birth, you must declare citizenship or visit the local US embassy or consulate to apply for this right (like changing your name on a birth certificate). I’m willing to bet his birth name isn’t even Chester Brown.

Alabama has illegal immigrant policies so strict they are leaving Alabama. This entire country has similar issues and these nitwits take this issue and turn it into a race issue. This country has enough race problems, without them being made worse, by lying Alabama supporters, but more so, by UGA haters, just because we love UGA. So, in reality, that makes those who are using the race card, the real racists. That is the problem with real racists. They do not see the real racism in their own lives, because they justify their racist views in their own feeble racist minds.

Why do you call it a “controversial” law by the Board of Regents????? Illegal is illegal, and if there is no more room at UGA for citizens, then just because he is an athlete shouldn’t allow him to take a space. Obviously, he and his family are not up on the laws. Afterall, they are illegal and probably just looking for another handout. Thank goodness he is leaving GA!
