Brandon Greene: UGA makes last-ditch effort for top Alabama recruit

Brandon Greene will be wearing which baseball cap?

Brandon Greene told the AJC on Monday afternoon that he still plans to sign a football scholarship with Alabama.

However, UGA still hasn’t given up hopes of changing his mind before Wednesday’s signing day.

The 6-foot-6, 295-pound offensive lineman from Cedar Grove High School confirmed that UGA has sent him a letter-of-intent. Greene said he also got one from Alabama, and that’s where he plans to sign.

There’s a lot of speculation surrounding Greene, who is ranked the state’s No. 1 prospect at OL by some, and with good reason: Greene made a surprise visit to UGA last month, reportedly angering Alabama coach Nick Saban.

Alabama's Nick Saban has enjoyed a banner year of recruiting Georgia's elite prospects (AP)

Even to add more suspense to the recruiting drama, Mark Richt and his entourage of three UGA assistants went to Cedar Grove to see Greene last Thursday. That’s awful late in the recruiting process to make such a concentrated and orchestrated effort if UGA didn’t think it had a chance, don’t you think?

Let’s fast forward back to today: Greene told the AJC he will make it official by signing with Alabama at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Cedar Grove.

This is where it gets interesting again. When we talked to Cedar Grove coach Ray Bonner to confirm the time, we asked if UGA was still in for Greene? Said Bonner, “Brandon said he was going to bring two hats with him [on Wednesday]. I don’t know. I just try to stay out of this. But I think he’s going to Alabama.”

Then when we went back and asked Greene if he was bringing Alabama and UGA hats to his signing ceremony, he replied, “I’m not sure.”

There you go. I guess  we — like everyone else — we’ll find out at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

Why wouldn’t he want to come in to PJ’s program and be another top NFL talent. UGA and BAMA are falling after the oversigning penalties come in play. We don’t cheat here at our school, and PJ will turn him into a first rounder, whereas, he will be overlooked at UGA and BAMA. Come be the face of our team Brandon. Its not too late.

“Greene made a surprise visit to UGA last month, reportedly angering Alabama coach Nick Saban.”

Just another thinly veiled shot at Saban and Bama. Golly, you’d think that after all these attempts you might actually have an impact on these recruits. It must be that they truly appreciate Saban’s honesty, as well as becoming the best student athlete possible. Oh, perhaps the chance to play for championships and becoming high draft picks might hold some water with these kids also. The lack of professionalism and objectivity on this site is sickening. You should go ahead and add an uge.edu to your domain.

The Grinch…I hate to ruin you flame with facts but I guess I have to.

Yes, we have 27 committed now and may get 1 more. We are allowed to back count 3 to last years class and are doing so with 3 of our early enrollees. So that essentially puts us now at 24 (27-3=24). If we get one more, that will make 25, the legal number we are permitted to sign. There is also a chance we will have 1-2 guys not make it due to academics. If we have 2 which I expect, that puts us at 23 (25-2=23). This will keep us within the number we are permitted to sign.

My sincerest apologies for providing you with facts about the Alabama recruiting class as I know it hurts you flaming of the best coach in college football.

This is a preposterous story. The kid has said repeatedly that he’s going to Alabama. But let’s dredge it up again to start the yapping anew.

Here’s a novel idea: Why don’t you ask next year’s top 2013 Georgia recruits about their experiences at Junior Day in Tuscaloosa over the weekend? That includes your quarterback of the future. By the way, look for King Robert to join the party this week.

Hey Saban, what goes around comes around.

After the way Saban pulled Justin Taylor’s offer, Brandon Greene pulling his commitment and going to Georgia would “even the score” so to speak. Saban thinks it is ok to pull a kid’s offer after the kid commits but he gets his panties in a wad if a kid changes his mind and considers another school. I hope Georgia high school coaches take note of Saban’s tactics and send him packing back to Alabama.

Brown Dog

January 30th, 2012
2:50 pm

GT, always a risk, as the regrettable Justin Taylor situation proves.

But it also shows how recruiting has become a nonstop affair, and why so many Georgia kids end up elsewhere. Some coaches are just faster off the mark. Georgia and Tech are still trying to fill out classes. Alabama got three new 2013 commitments over the weekend, from Alabama, Arkansas and Louisiana.

Serious question that I have for those of you who love following this stuff and I figure getting a cross section of those hardcore here would give me an answer. For you hardcore College Football fan, is any part of you sick of this recruiting stuff? I used to love College Football, but this circus that it has become has really turned me off and I wondered if there were others of you that were starting to feel the same way. It was one thing 20 years ago when a kid was a special HS player and it came down to the two big state schools (and in these instances, for those old school guys, where they lived and who there daddy rooted for took out any suspense) but now, with the multiple hats, and lets do it on TV and coaches lying has just turned it all into a joke. And the effect that not having a playoff I think doesnt help credibility in my eyes of this sport, so maybe it is a bit of both that has turned me off to College Football. And dont get me wrong, this is not a knock on the 17 years old. They are kids and when this kind of attention is thrust upon kids, you cant expect much – in fact I am surprised most handle it as well as they do. I am just shocked that there hasnt been more fans like me turned off by it all and just walked away. Its hard to get yourself emotionally invovled with this stuff anymore. So my question is, do you find yourself less interested because of the silliness of this circus or is this drama actually something you enjoy following more the more rediculous it gets? No judgement here. Just curious.

If a Georgia kid is good enough to be recruited by Alabama, LSU or Florida (you know programs that have won it all in the last few years) shouldn’t UGA be chasing after them too? Richt does your Grad Asst. & Recruiting Coordinator really review tape or do they just use the ratings service to try and find talent? For Alabama to be such a terrible place to live filled with hillbilly’s & rednecks, I’m always amazed at the jealousy that comes from UGA fans. If it were in-deed true, what they say about the beautiful state of Alabama, then what does it say about Georgia that all these kids are coming in waves.
As for the AJC, put this one to rest kids, Greene is coming to Bama. You only make yourself look bad by continuing to harp on something that is not going to happen,i.e. Greene flipping to UGA.

“Yes, we have 27 committed now and may get 1 more.
My sincerest apologies for providing you with facts about the Alabama recruiting class as I know it hurts you flaming of the best coach in college football.”

Seems a little strange to tell him they have no room (when the casual Bama fan can do some quick adding/subtracting to show UA being within the limit (25) by 2 signees) and needs to come in with the 2013 class….so….Are ua liar SECis Football or is Saban? On April 15, 2008, Saban was asked by reporter Ian Rapoport how he was going to handle the numbers and when does he you start to worry about it? Saban replied “I’m not worried about them. It’ll all work out. I mean, the whole thing has a solution to every issue. You don’t put yourself in a position where you don’t know what’s coming.” Rapoport respond, “So you’re not going to tell us?” to which Saban replied “We know how it has to be managed, and it will be managed. You think Preacherman is going to play Brandon Greene ahead of Watts Dantzler!? Not on your life! Richt wants to keep Vince happy. That’s the best way to insure he stays on the gravy train, Even if it’s not what’s best for your football team. At Left tackle it’s the same thing. Except this time Richt wants to keep you fools happy. And that means “you know who”. Big John Theus. the private school mauler, sporting a 5.5 40. As much as I dislike Saban and his gray-shirting tactics, Bama is not doing anything “illegal”. Between early signees, players leaving, etc., they are not going to sign any more than they are allowed. The Taylor kids situation is unfortunate, but honestly, until big recruits actually take a real issue with it (actually refusing Bama as opposed to talking big about it being wrong), Saban is going to be Saban. Question his “morality and ethics” all you want, but he is simply working within the rules, not outside of them.

And remember, our class is looking like it may be less than 20 recruits and a number of them have already enrolled. UGA has the ability to sign way over the standard allotment considering how small this class is going to be and the fact that our roster is now where near the 85 allotment.

I love Georgia, can’t stand any trolls (our school included), but I get what Saban is doing and it is not illegal and it is not providing any advantage that UGA, GT, or any other school has available to them if they simply choose to do the same. Richt isn’t like that. I respect him for not being like that, but I get Saban as well. You don’t pay coaches millions of dollars at an SEC program to be a bystander.

And mark my words, all these trolls commenting on oversigning will be accusing UGA of it last year. And a number of you who are attacking Bama for oversigning this year will be defending UGA next year…assuming we can actually sign a full class, UGA could sign 28 if not more recruits for the 2013 class.

Let’s talk football and hope we can swing some OL’s to our team. Without them, all the talent at our skill positions on offense will mean nothing.

“In early 2011, after National Signing Day, Saban and the University of Alabama again became the subjects of heavy media criticism after they again appeared to have oversigned. When asked about the appearance of being oversigned during his Signing Day press conference, Saban gave a 431-word response in which he denied being oversigned but refused to clarify the situation by explaining how many scholarship players departed the program after the 2010 season. Further raising questions about Saban and Alabama, Birmingham News journalist Kevin Scarbinsky revealed a few days after Saban’s press conference that in numerous requests by the newspaper for the scholarship numbers of public universities in Alabama, the University of Alabama has been the only one to completely redact the numbers for every sport in which it participates.”

You obviously have no clue as to what you are talking about. UGA made an offer to him and he chose to go to Bama. That’s why he stopped recruiting him. Richt has shown in the past with Brent Benedict that he will not pull an offer even if a kid is seriously injured if the player commits. Never doubt Honest Sab(an)

“WSJ Transfer Concerns

On November 25, 2010, the Journal reported that several former Alabama players claim Saban and Alabama lied about their reasons for leaving the school.[3] On August 5, 2009 Saban in a press conference Saban made a statement included was a reference to four players Price Hall, Brandon Fanney, Alonzo Lawrence and Jermaine Preyear. “These guys all did something. It doesn’t make them bad people.…These guys didn’t do what they were supposed to do here, whether it was for academic reasons or whatever. They’re not going to be part of the program.” The players told The Wall Street Journal they committed no such violations and that Alabama and Saban had only claimed as much so as to protect the image of their program in the eyes of future recruits.

Prince Hall, a starter and All-American as freshman, had been suspended for the 3rd time during the Spring according to published reports, the last being categorized as indefinite. Brandon Fanney, a 14 game starter from the previous season, had been suspended for rules violations during the Spring.

Preyear, who decided to transfer six months after enrolling during the Spring, said he chose to leave over concerns about playing time. “I don’t know any rules I could have broken.”

Alonzo Lawrence reasons for transfer were unclear, but according to his high school coach his problems at Alabama “wasn’t anything major,” and tied it to things like being late to team meetings. Lawrence transferred to Southern Miss before moving on to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.”

Harumph to Florida, Georgia and Vandy.

“Several universities within the Southeastern Conference (SEC) have frequently been accused of oversigning. Florida, Georgia, and Vanderbilt are usually noted as exceptions within the SEC due to their having signed the fewest total recruits among SEC teams over the past decade. Georgia head coach Mark Richt has condemned the process, saying “I don’t want to oversign, then tell one of the kids we’ve already got, ‘You’ve got no value to us’ and toss him aside. I’m not going to do that.”

On February 1, 2011, Sports Illustrated published a letter from the president of the University of Florida, Bernie Machen, in which Machen condemned oversigning-related practices – including grayshirting and the excessive use of medical disqualifications – as “morally reprehensible” and “repugnant.”

Prince Hall was a menace. Shula’s player. Didn’t follow rules. Kicked off the team. That’s right, kicked off the Team. Richt should actually try that some time. It works. 100% no shame in running that guy off!
Brandon Fanney started every game as a junior on a team that went un-defeated in the regular season in 2008. Was set to be our starter at Jack going into 2009. Broke team rules & was kicked off the team. Even though, he was a returning starter & we had no depth behind him. Again 100% behind Saben for this move. We replaced Fanney, a high school All-American 4 star recruit, with Cory Reamer!!!!, a former walk-on. So yes, it must have been another Saben masterplan to replace a former 4 star recruit with a walk on. Again, I know this does not happen at UGA, but some schools do have rules & some schools do DISCIPLINE their players.
As far as Preyear & Lawrence go, both transferred to get more playing time. Neither was playing at Bama. Both 4th stingers. Both said they transferred so they could get a chance to play college football!!
I thought you were actually gonna make me work somewhat hard!! You need to do better than these 4.

Honest Sab(an) gets props for inspiring an internet website.

This from the founder of oversigning.com:

Can you explain why and when you launched Oversigning.com?

“The site was launched on Feb. 10, 2010, shortly after National Signing Day, and it was created for the sole purpose of investigating and discussing oversigning, discovering its historical roots and to helping lead the charge to have oversigning removed from college athletics.

If you have been to the site you might have noticed the following quote at the top of the homepage: “It’s none of your business. Aiight? And don’t give me this stuff about the fans need to know, because they don’t need to know.” Looking back on how all of this started, I would have to point that quote from Nick Saban back in April of 2008 as the real catalyst for my deep interest in oversigning. That quote has always bothered me. It came from an article, written by Ian Rapoport, where Ian asked Saban directly about his scholarship numbers. Saban told Rapoport that it was none of his business.

That was the first time that I know of that Saban was called out on his practice of oversigning the roster and it was pretty apparent that he didn’t take too kindly to the line of questioning. The following year, we saw Houston Nutt sign 37 players, which led to the “Huston Nutt Rule” in the SEC which limited the number of players that could be signed to 28 each year. And from then on I have followed oversigning very closely, which ultimately led to the creation of the website as I mentioned earlier.”

“First off, I am not alone in thinking that it is wrong. As I mention on the website, Bobby Dodd and Georgia Tech had such a problem with oversigning in the SEC that they removed Georgia Tech from the SEC in the 1960s’. The Big Ten Conference has banned the practice for decades for obvious reasons. And several other coaches, such as Mark Richt, simply refuse to oversign their rosters. So it’s not as if I’m alone here.”

Another pearl from the founder of oversigning.com

“Who are the worst offenders of oversigning? I’m talking coaches, programs and conferences.

By far, the worst of the BCS conferences in terms of oversigning is the SEC, and it is not even close. SEC schools oversign their rosters more than any other conference, specifically schools such as LSU, Alabama and Ole Miss. The statistic that stands out the most is the number of times between 2002 and 2010 that SEC schools signed 25 recruits or more in back to back years: 54, as compared to the Big Ten’s 18. That is staggering. We actually took a closer look at all the numbers and posted them on the site:

With regards to coaches, obviously Huston Nutt comes to mind, but in terms of national championship caliber coaches, Nick Saban and Les Miles top the list.”

You know … just to show Saban that he was “mad as hell and wasn’t going to take it anymore” … or something :-)

Hats off to Alabama for their season and recruiting.Next year Kirby Smart and other coaches wont be able to tell recruits interested in Georgia that Mark Richt will be fired.Gergia has a lot of returning talent and will wind up with a nice recruting class.UGA will have great season and a bigger better recruiting class next year.I’m over it..

GTontherise is just another example of why GaTech fans still fail at basic knowledge of football.

UGA has been the most vocal team about ENDING oversigning. They have not done it, period. To even try to make it sound like they have is pure bias. If you cannot leave such wanton bias out of your posts you will never be taken seriously.

Either that or you just don’t know much about college football.

Which is it?

I am thinking UGA should move their entire staff into Brandon Greene’s bedroom for the next 48 hours … that way when they end the recruiting cycle on a flop … they can blame Coach Saban . It is obviously an excuse for FAIL that some people are highly willing to accept :-)

For the simpletons that are all giddy over the Collin’s angle of attack … hoping it means something for them and their FAILed programs . Landon Collins made clear that he has been focused on attending the University of Alabama for more than TWO YEARS . He even added his mom was all for it herself … even wearing Bama gear … right up until two weeks before he was set to announce .

It appears that UGA has changed its’ recruiting ways.
They do not evaluate talent anymore, they just wait for the athletes to committ to a school and then
go after them.
Saves money and time. Now if someone would go to Athens and coach they would be set to go.

UGA has no excuses. At some point in time, the Rednecks will accept the fact blaming Saben for their sorry program isn’t going to work forever.
Lose to Boise St — blame Saben
Lose to S.C. — blame Saben,
sign 12 players on NSD — blame Saben.
Man up. That’s all we ask. During the Shula years, we took our medicine.
I know these are lean times in Athens, but hey, keep your chin up. Things can only get better. Michigan St is not on the schedule next year. As I look at it, no one is really on the schedule next year!!! Look in the mirror ladies, you will find your answers there!!!

You fools only care about beating tech and comparing stats, where are all of the trophies at? Hell, I would kill just to see some respect for UGA football again. LOL…what a nice retort….uga fan: “Hey, we are uga and we are getting bumrushed in our OWN state…we have just watched BAMA take 2 NCs in 3 yrs,…. so instead of discussing the great era of BAMA football, I am reduced to discussing issues related to fringe fans. We are uga and we now consider a successful season as beating tech.” ….could you be any more petty and trivial?? the envy displayed by the other fan bases is remarkable. As a Bama fan I accept the bitterness from the opposition, but to debate football and what is happening on the field is one thing….to completely disregard it and focus a few stupid fans makes you look really well…whiney. What is happening right now with BAMA football is something special….when this era is done, people who can actually be objective will look back and realize this was one of the greatest dynasties in CFB history. If UGA were doing what Bama has done I would admit their place in history…it’s just sad that some have to make disingenous comments to feel better about their mediocre team. Once again – CMR shows the hypocrite that he is. He has sad often times that he doesn’t know if he wants a player on his team that can’t keep a commitment (verbal or otherwise). That he questions a players integrity and character when he decommitts. But I see that CMR is ALWAYS going after players who have ALREADY committed to other schools. He can talk about “Jesus” and his beliefs all he wants to – but to me they are EMPTY words when he continues to stalk other players when they have committed somewhere else. What a hypocrite.

@ 5150 … please tell me you didn’t call out a guy for correctly spelling penicillin and corrected him by misspelling it :-)

@ Dawg Whisperer

You are obviously wrong when you facetiously try to imply Bama fans somehow just “picked” a random papers recruiting blog to drop in on . We aren’t bothering with any of the of Boston papers … or for that matter , none on the Left coast either .

Hit your scroll button and reread the headline again there bud . While you are at it … reread the article . Seems like the article is ALL about Saint Spray Tan and the Holy Dawg Five still desperately trying to piece together THIS years class while Saban is out recruiting NEXT years class out of Georgia .

Look through the headline list on AJC in the last year alone … you will see a mountain of directly Bama driven headlines . So as long as our head coach sees fit to plunder your state for talent …. we will drop in to see about OUR recruits .

Now I know that bothers people who would like to be left alone to lie unchallenged . Frankly , as some of your own Dawg fans have already pointed out … it makes you sound as whiny and pathetic as the Georgia Tech fans you despise . I have even saw the “it is only a game” and ” we have better academics” excuses flying out of Dawg mouths .

You KNOW when you see people start using the excuses “it is only a game … we don’t live for it … there are more important things in life” … on a COLLEGE FOOTBALL BLOG … they have basically thrown in the towel and admitted they are basically mentally prepared to suck and play also ran for LIFE as well :-)

MC, your picture caption of Nick Saban in which you stated “has another banner year recruiting Georgia’s elite prospects” is very presumptuous , but if you can show me one 5* he has recruited and received a commitment, i’ll eat my UGA hat. C’mon man. Aside from Brandon Greene (who knows..) and that prima donna Geno Smith, who else did they enjoy from this “banner year” that we didn’t replace with as good, if not better , prospects? UGA is building a great class, and it is without having the inflated numbers that the other “higher ranked” schools have. We are addressing needs, not trying to win the over-signing bowl? Keep up the terrific work of trying to show UGA in a negative light, we don’t need you anymore.
