Brandon Greene: UGA makes last-ditch effort for top Alabama recruit

Brandon Greene will be wearing which baseball cap?

Brandon Greene told the AJC on Monday afternoon that he still plans to sign a football scholarship with Alabama.

However, UGA still hasn’t given up hopes of changing his mind before Wednesday’s signing day.

The 6-foot-6, 295-pound offensive lineman from Cedar Grove High School confirmed that UGA has sent him a letter-of-intent. Greene said he also got one from Alabama, and that’s where he plans to sign.

There’s a lot of speculation surrounding Greene, who is ranked the state’s No. 1 prospect at OL by some, and with good reason: Greene made a surprise visit to UGA last month, reportedly angering Alabama coach Nick Saban.

Even to add more suspense to the recruiting drama, Mark Richt and his entourage of three UGA assistants went to Cedar Grove to see Greene last Thursday. That’s awful late in the recruiting process to make such a concentrated and orchestrated effort if UGA didn’t think it had a chance, don’t you think?

Let’s fast forward back to today: Greene told the AJC he will make it official by signing with Alabama at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Cedar Grove.

This is where it gets interesting again. When we talked to Cedar Grove coach Ray Bonner to confirm the time, we asked if UGA was still in for Greene? Said Bonner, “Brandon said he was going to bring two hats with him [on Wednesday]. I don’t know. I just try to stay out of this. But I think he’s going to Alabama.”

Then when we went back and asked Greene if he was bringing Alabama and UGA hats to his signing ceremony, he replied, “I’m not sure.”

There you go. I guess  we — like everyone else — we’ll find out at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

He’s bammer boys, but thats OK. Theus and Young (who will pick UGA) are better and WANT to be Dawgs! Good luck Brandon, and if it doesnt work out that you’re a starter by the ‘14 season, then I wish you the best at North Alabama!

Why wouldn’t he want to come in to PJ’s program and be another top NFL talent. UGA and BAMA are falling after the oversigning penalties come in play. We don’t cheat here at our school, and PJ will turn him into a first rounder, whereas, he will be overlooked at UGA and BAMA. Come be the face of our team Brandon. Its not too late.

Dave, it wasn’t too long ago that Alabama was on the decline, I can’t wait for the boosters’ records at your school and the rest of the SEC show who they paid over the years like Miami.

“Greene made a surprise visit to UGA last month, reportedly angering Alabama coach Nick Saban.”

Just another thinly veiled shot at Saban and Bama. Golly, you’d think that after all these attempts you might actually have an impact on these recruits. It must be that they truly appreciate Saban’s honesty, as well as becoming the best student athlete possible. Oh, perhaps the chance to play for championships and becoming high draft picks might hold some water with these kids also. The lack of professionalism and objectivity on this site is sickening. You should go ahead and add an uge.edu to your domain.

The Grinch…I hate to ruin you flame with facts but I guess I have to.

Yes, we have 27 committed now and may get 1 more. We are allowed to back count 3 to last years class and are doing so with 3 of our early enrollees. So that essentially puts us now at 24 (27-3=24). If we get one more, that will make 25, the legal number we are permitted to sign. There is also a chance we will have 1-2 guys not make it due to academics. If we have 2 which I expect, that puts us at 23 (25-2=23). This will keep us within the number we are permitted to sign.

My sincerest apologies for providing you with facts about the Alabama recruiting class as I know it hurts you flaming of the best coach in college football.

What a waste of electrons. What top quality player with even half a brain would waver on going to a college where he will be playing for National Championships year in and year out or playing for a college where the keystone cops will be following him around to see if he pees on a bush late one night while playing for a team that won’t win anything except maybe Sunday School attendnece records……….

I love the Dawgs, but if it were my son I’d tell him to go to Bama.

This is a preposterous story. The kid has said repeatedly that he’s going to Alabama. But let’s dredge it up again to start the yapping anew.

Here’s a novel idea: Why don’t you ask next year’s top 2013 Georgia recruits about their experiences at Junior Day in Tuscaloosa over the weekend? That includes your quarterback of the future. By the way, look for King Robert to join the party this week.

I love how all of you are on here crying about us oversigning and guys not getting on the field….Yet, your in-state boys choose us over their in-state school. The reason is that we compete and win championships and you do not….Call your boys dumb all you want to but they know where to go and better yet where not to go…Georgia will have another top receruiting class that fails to live up to their hype and Richt will get another extention…That is Georgia Football

Hey Saban, what goes around comes around.

After the way Saban pulled Justin Taylor’s offer, Brandon Greene pulling his commitment and going to Georgia would “even the score” so to speak. Saban thinks it is ok to pull a kid’s offer after the kid commits but he gets his panties in a wad if a kid changes his mind and considers another school. I hope Georgia high school coaches take note of Saban’s tactics and send him packing back to Alabama.

Brown Dog

January 30th, 2012

GT, always a risk, as the regrettable Justin Taylor situation proves.

But it also shows how recruiting has become a nonstop affair, and why so many Georgia kids end up elsewhere. Some coaches are just faster off the mark. Georgia and Tech are still trying to fill out classes. Alabama got three new 2013 commitments over the weekend, from Alabama, Arkansas and Louisiana.

How can Saban sign 27 already and is offering to many more? He just ignores the rules and he ignores what he does to create more room.

Eventually that lack of character will cause things to turn bad.

I have a serious question.

January 30th, 2012
2:54 pm

Serious question that I have for those of you who love following this stuff and I figure getting a cross section of those hardcore here would give me an answer. For you hardcore College Football fan, is any part of you sick of this recruiting stuff? I used to love College Football, but this circus that it has become has really turned me off and I wondered if there were others of you that were starting to feel the same way. It was one thing 20 years ago when a kid was a special HS player and it came down to the two big state schools (and in these instances, for those old school guys, where they lived and who there daddy rooted for took out any suspense) but now, with the multiple hats, and lets do it on TV and coaches lying has just turned it all into a joke. And the effect that not having a playoff I think doesnt help credibility in my eyes of this sport, so maybe it is a bit of both that has turned me off to College Football. And dont get me wrong, this is not a knock on the 17 years old. They are kids and when this kind of attention is thrust upon kids, you cant expect much – in fact I am surprised most handle it as well as they do. I am just shocked that there hasnt been more fans like me turned off by it all and just walked away. Its hard to get yourself emotionally invovled with this stuff anymore. So my question is, do you find yourself less interested because of the silliness of this circus or is this drama actually something you enjoy following more the more rediculous it gets? No judgement here. Just curious.
