Brandon Greene told the AJC on Monday afternoon that he still plans to sign a football scholarship with Alabama.
However, UGA still hasn’t given up hopes of changing his mind before Wednesday’s signing day.
The 6-foot-6, 295-pound offensive lineman from Cedar Grove High School confirmed that UGA has sent him a letter-of-intent. Greene said he also got one from Alabama, and that’s where he plans to sign.
There’s a lot of speculation surrounding Greene, who is ranked the state’s No. 1 prospect at OL by some, and with good reason: Greene made a surprise visit to UGA last month, reportedly angering Alabama coach Nick Saban.
Even to add more suspense to the recruiting drama, Mark Richt and his entourage of three UGA assistants went to Cedar Grove to see Greene last Thursday. That’s awful late in the recruiting process to make such a concentrated and orchestrated effort if UGA didn’t think it had a chance, don’t you think?
Let’s fast forward back to today: Greene told the AJC he will make it official by signing with Alabama at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Cedar Grove.
This is where it gets interesting again. When we talked to Cedar Grove coach Ray Bonner to confirm the time, we asked if UGA was still in for Greene? Said Bonner, “Brandon said he was going to bring two hats with him [on Wednesday]. I don’t know. I just try to stay out of this. But I think he’s going to Alabama.”
Then when we went back and asked Greene if he was bringing Alabama and UGA hats to his signing ceremony, he replied, “I’m not sure.”
There you go. I guess we — like everyone else — we’ll find out at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
