Mark Richt can’t visit with top recruit, sends UGA assistants

UGA coach Mark Richt couldn’t make the in-home visit with one of his top remaining targets and sent two Bulldogs assistants in his place on Saturday night.

Josh Dawson, a 6-foot-5, 225-pound defensive end from Tucker High School, is committed to Vanderbilt but considering switching to UGA. He got a call from Richt on Saturday afternoon that he couldn’t make the 7 p.m. meeting with Dawson and his family.

“Coach Richt said he couldn’t make it because he had a family emergency,” Dawson told the AJC. “I know family comes first, so I wasn’t disappointed about it. We understood. It was OK.”

Instead of Richt, Dawson sat down for nearly three hours with a pair of assistants, defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner. Dawson said Grantham did most of the talking.

“He talked about how he could use me, putting me in different areas and positions on defense,” Dawson said. “He told me how freshman can come in and play. Overall, I think the visit went very well. I think my parents enjoyed it. They had all of their questions that they needed to be answered that weren’t on my official visit to Georgia.”

Dawson said Richt’s absence from the in-home visit won’t affect his consideration of UGA. They are scheduled to talk over the phone on Sunday or Monday.

Which way is Dawson leaning? Will it be UGA or Vanderbilt? “It’s still 50/50 between two right now,” he said. “I’d probably say I’m still in the same place. I know I’m going to be doing a lot of thinking today and tomorrow. Hopefully, I will have my mind set on Tuesday and tell everybody on Wednesday.”

Dawson said his final decision will be revealed when he signs at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Tucker High School.

  • What’s in UGA’s favor? “Playing close to home in front of family and friends, and the history of winning at Georgia.”
  • What about Vanderbilt? “It’s a great education, and they have a pretty good recruiting class coming in.”

BREAKING: The recruiting drama of JaQuay Williams, the state’s No. 1 prospect at WR, has taken another surprising twist. Guess where he went this weekend? And is it good news for UGA or Auburn? (Click on story link)

Why not Tech? Great education and playing close to home in front of family and friends.

Grantham did all the talking because Coach Garner was raiding the Dawson’s refrigerator. Heard about it at church this morning. They served the dude a dinner for a king and when it’s time to finally sit down on the sofa and talk, Garner bails for the fridge. First, he gets all of the leftovers, and then devours the Breyer’s ice cream. Never seen anything like it. Family is upset.

HighTech thats a good question. You have to think any kid from Ga that is considering Vandy should consider Tech.

Vanderbilt is now a bitter rival to the pound-less pups following “todd the bod grantham getting his beat down from Coach Franklin …………
This kid saw how tough Vandy is and wants to be a part of it….
Look for him to stay committed to VANDERBILT…

Having lost a defensive end commitment recently, I would think the Tech coaches would be ringing Josh Dawson’s phone off the hook.

Academically, Vanderbilt has more in common with UGA than Tech. Not everyone wants to be an engineer.

HighTech, it’s bc no top recruit wants to play for Tech and go 7-5 or 8-4 every year and lose a bowl game. 8 in a row right? Once Tech figures out you can’t recruit top players when your saling point is an education. Your saling point has to be winning conference champ. and going to. BCS bowl

And here comes Tony………..

have you been downtown lately?

Yes, I live on campus, have lived here for 3 plus years and have not been robbed/mugged/assulted/harrased PERIOD!!

Yes , TECH is a fine school .. It is also a GREAT school.
Atlanta is city on the rebound, crime is being curtailed year after year. If I had to choose between Atlanta and Athens, it is still a no brainer…

Tech. could offer him the same education as Vanderbilt had, so Tech. gets a vote there.
UGA’s winning tradition versus Techs. Point to UGA.
Coach Grantham versus Coach Groh. Point to UGA.
Vanderbilt has a good class coming in versus UGA, that already has a good class on board and a good recruiting class coming in. Point to UGA.
Playing in from of friends and family at tech. to a stadium a lot smaller that isn’t often full, versus 90,000 at UGA. Point to UGA.
UGA campus versus GT campus. Point to UGA.
The SEC versus the ACC. Point to UGA and Vanderbilt.
Now, do you understand why he is not considering Tech.?

I think you mean selling point. UGA also lost their bowl game. Both teams need to do better in that regard. Tech has recently been ACC champion and played in the Orange Bowl. I can list selling points for just about every southeastern school. I just wonder if the selling points for Tech are being communicated clearly enough. There is more to Tech than just a great education.

If that is your criteria for choosing a college, that would limit your choices in the southeast to Ole Miss, Alabama, Auburn, and Clemson. You could probably include Miami in that, but it’s not really fair because their stadium is much larger than they need.

Josh has to ask himself a few questions concerning his decision on which school to attend, Do I want to play in the NFL? Do I want to play for the SEC championship? Do I want to play for a school with a winning tradition? Once he answers these questions then his decision will become clear.

What in the world makes Athens a “Classic City”. A bunch of beer joints with 15 coats of peeling paint & carved in graffiti? A podunk town with a college? It certainly doesn’t have anything that say, Statesboro doesn’t have, at least that I can see. It’s certainy not ATL.

Well, I obviously don’t sway your way there “Muff”, but that’s beside the point. I have to take you to task on Atlanta being a great place to live. I can’t really compare it to Athens, as I’ve never lived there, but Atlanta has some serious issues, especially with crime and infrastructure. Maybe you’re a CE and can help those guys out down there…

@Muffin — Seriously dear, take a Midol, lie down and watch a Lifetime Movie. You are seriously fussy and bitter this morning. Your inability to get a date and have a team that can win more than 1 game out of 10 is unfortunate, but lashing out in bitter, incoherent and jealous rage isn’t going to help your miserable life.

Josh, Josh’s parents, Josh’s friends…
I think you should simply choose what feels closest to your heart. Where do you feel at home? At this point, it’s like picking out artwork. Whatever you like is what should be purchased as it’s very personal.
However, when looking at specific issues, I think UGA can be overlooked in the education dept. There may be other pros/cons that are applicable, but I don’t feel this one is appropriate. UGA also provides great opportunity for a solid education. Many individual schools are ranked higher than there counterparts at Vandy. In general, this should not be a point of differentiation with Vandy. Of course, Vandy is a great school, but getting a great education is all up to the individual. Proper school choice within UGA, smart course/professor choices and dedication to studies will yield any desired result. I have friends that have graduated UGA and moved on to Ivy schools & Duke for MBA’s.
Good luck with your decision. Go with your heart, that’s usually the safer choice despite all the pro/con lists one can create.

The real debacle here is Coach Rodney Garner not doing his job on in-state recruits!! Push yourself away from the table and get out / recruit the state!! Should be on a salary reduction / bonus program if he doesn’t produce a Top 10 class / a Top 5 class!! “Win Baby Win!!” or “You Snooze, You Lose”!!

In other news:

Derek Dooley is on fire on the recruiting trail my friends!

He is going to sign Patterson and Davis this week to close out the best WR class anyone has ever seen. They will do fine learning from Da’Rick and Justin Hunter. Tyler Bray is going to be setting records this fall.

And yes, Dooley just secured pledges from two of the State’s best in DE Jason Carr from Memphis and WR Camion Patrick (6′2 200 4.4).
RB Jalen Reeves Maybin is next for the Vols.

Peace.
