Junior Gnonkonde: Ex-Georgia Tech recruit picks UNC

Ex-Georgia Tech DE Junior Gnonkonde will sign with ACC rival North Carolina (AJC)

Ex-Georgia Tech recruit Junior Gnonkonde committed to North Carolina on Sunday night.

The 6-foot-5, 225-pound defensive end from Lanier County High School picked North Carolina over offers from South Carolina, Wake Forest, Central Florida, Syracuse and Louisiana Tech, among others.

“He met with the head coach before the basketball game and said ‘I’m comfortable; I don’t need to look anywhere else,’” said Lanier County athletics director John White, who is also Junior’s legal guardian.

“I tried to get him to wait and Junior said that he didn’t need to wait, so he went ahead and committed.”

Gnonkonde was Georgia Tech’s first commitment for 2012, pledging to the Yellow Jackets last February. However, 10 days ago, Gnonkonde said Paul Johnson informed him that his scholarship offer was being withdrawn because his test score “was too low.” White disputes the claim.

After becoming a free agent, Gnonkonde became a hot commodity, picking up a half-dozen offers. He will sign with North Carolina on Wednesday and expects to be eligible to play next season.

Both Junior and his guardian interveiwed separately with North Carolina’s athletic director and director of admissions during this weekend’s official vist. “He does not have to take the test but we are taking it,” White said. “It’s not an issue. They are taking him as he is with his academics.”

Sunday was busy for Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets lost one recruit and gained one — while another one remains undecided:

Glad to see things worked out for the young man. It was unfortunate circumstances that apparently prevented him from playing at Georgia Tech. Wish him all the best.

Good for him. As an aside, it makes no sense for him to take it again if he doesn’t need to.

Glad to hear he has found a good school. Study hard and get your degree. Don’t know why he is taking the test again if he doesn’t have to, but that’s his decision.

Congrads Junior!

Study hard and get your degree no matter what happens on the Field.

UNC is a pretty good place to be given their combo of Academics/Athletics.

I’m glad it all worked our for you.

Well, he was told his test scores were too low, Okie, and we have no reason to lie. Plus, it isn’t like we couldn’t use the help on defense.

Good reply George…but I’m still confused about the quality of the other schools. I guess we will know more in the future. I think there is something we do not know. If he does not qualify at these schools after re-taking his ACTs and SATs, then I will agree Coach Fish Fry was looking after the best interest of this young man.

Okiedawg, I think there is definitely some things going on behind the scenes that either GT or the coach/guardian won’t reveal. The coach who did his recruiting is fired right before NSD sounds really fishy to me. I know we talk about how difficult the standards are to get into Tech are, but UNC is a great school, and so are some of the others on that list that supposedly offered. I’m glad things worked out for him but I wish I knew what the full story was.

Tech having to scramble for a replacement while Junior gets to punish Tech for pulling his schollie.

I wish Junior the best. I was excited last spring when he committed to Tech. It is always good to see kids here in South Georgia with international connections head to the Flats. BUT something went big time wrong and I am not sure it was all Coach Johnson’s fault. Sounds like a monumental mess up, at least in the communications process. Junior wants to study engineering and now he heads off to an outstanding ACC school with strong academics. There is certainly more to this story and I hope Coach Johnson will be free to explain some of it after signing day on Wednesday.

Yeah I also want to hear the rest of the story on Junior Gnonkonde. Todd Spencer was reprimanded by GT and suspended for the first game of the season by the NCAA for violating its rules about calls to prospects. Now, he gets fired and the scholly to Gnonkonde is withdrawn because he does not qualify academically… yet UNC, Wake and Cuse offer.
