The intense recruiting battle between UGA and Auburn for the state’s No. 1 prospect at WR may have swung back in favor of the Tigers this weekend.
Sandy Creek High School’s JaQuay Williams is torn between sticking with his commitment to Auburn or switching to UGA.
The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder made a surprise appearance at Auburn this weekend, according to his coach, teammates and other recruits. Williams accompanied his Sandy Creek teammate, OL Will Adams, on an official visit to Auburn. Adams is committed to Georgia Tech but got a last-minute offer from Auburn on Thursday and decided to accept the invitation to look around campus.
It was an unofficial visit for Williams, who made his regular recruiting trip to Auburn a couple of weeks ago.
“JaQuay did ride with Will to Auburn,” Sandy Creek coach Chip Walker confirmed to the AJC in a text message.
It threw a curveball for UGA fans, which were feeling confident about their chances of flipping Williams after he allowed Mark Richt and entourage of UGA assistants to visit him at Sandy Creek on Thursday. The theory was, if Richt could get in front of Williams one last time, then he could turn the tide to the red and black.
Now Auburn may have regained the momentum for Williams in the final stretch. Maybe they had it all along. Maybe not.
Which way is JaQuay “officially” leaning? No one knows for sure because Williams has declined interview requests until Feb. 1. Adams also isn’t really talking to the media for the moment either.
Earlier on Saturday, UGA offered a pair of Sandy Creek underclassmen, sophomore WR Demarre Kitt and junior DB Shaq Wiggins. Kitt got his offer in person at UGA’s Junior Day, while Wiggins stayed home but got the news after talking to the Bulldogs over the phone.
Then his cell rang: “It was JaQuay, and at first he was mad at me for not going up to Georgia for Junior Day. He gave me a hard time about it. Then he congratulated me. He was like ‘You, me and Demarre … we can play together at Georgia, man,” said Wiggins, who has 12 early offers, including Tennessee and Michigan.
What is Shaq’s best guess on where JaQuay will sign on Wednesday? Will it be Auburn or UGA? “I’d say when JaQuay thinks about it deep down inside, he will stay with Auburn,” Wiggins said. “The reason I say that is because I’ve been with JaQuay on trips to Auburn and I’ve seen how he gets along with the coaches and players. He has always been like War Eagle this and War Eagle that.”
