JaQuay Williams: Guess which school got a surprise visit? Good news for UGA or Auburn?

Auburn or UGA for JaQuay? (Photo by Allyson Merrill)

The intense recruiting battle between UGA and Auburn for the state’s No. 1 prospect at WR may have swung back in favor of the Tigers this weekend.

Sandy Creek High School’s JaQuay Williams is torn between sticking with his commitment to Auburn or switching to UGA.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder made a surprise appearance at Auburn this weekend, according to his coach, teammates and other recruits. Williams accompanied his Sandy Creek teammate, OL Will Adams, on an official visit to Auburn. Adams is committed to Georgia Tech but got a last-minute offer from Auburn on Thursday and decided to accept the invitation to look around campus.

It was an unofficial visit for Williams, who made his regular recruiting trip to Auburn a couple of weeks ago.

“JaQuay did ride with Will to Auburn,” Sandy Creek coach Chip Walker confirmed to the AJC in a text message.

It threw a curveball for UGA fans, which were feeling confident about their chances of flipping Williams after he allowed Mark Richt and entourage of UGA assistants to visit him at Sandy Creek on Thursday. The theory was, if Richt could get in front of Williams one last time, then he could turn the tide to the red and black.

Now Auburn may have regained the momentum for Williams in the final stretch. Maybe they had it all along. Maybe not.

Which way is JaQuay “officially” leaning? No one knows for sure because Williams has declined interview requests until Feb. 1. Adams also isn’t really talking to the media for the moment either.

Earlier on Saturday, UGA offered a pair of Sandy Creek underclassmen, sophomore WR Demarre Kitt and junior DB Shaq Wiggins. Kitt got his offer in person at UGA’s Junior Day, while Wiggins stayed home but got the news after talking to the Bulldogs over the phone.

The winner for JaQuay is ..

Then his cell rang: “It was JaQuay, and at first he was mad at me for not going up to Georgia for Junior Day. He gave me a hard time about it. Then he congratulated me. He was like ‘You, me and Demarre … we can play together at Georgia, man,” said Wiggins, who has 12 early offers, including Tennessee and Michigan.

What is Shaq’s best guess on where JaQuay will sign on Wednesday? Will it be Auburn or UGA? “I’d say when JaQuay thinks about it deep down inside, he will stay with Auburn,” Wiggins said. “The reason I say that is because I’ve been with JaQuay on trips to Auburn and I’ve seen how he gets along with the coaches and players. He has always been like War Eagle this and War Eagle that.”

That’s Shaq’s guess; what’s yours? Please post below.

  • RELATED: Georgia Tech co-offensive line coach Todd Spencer is not expected back with the team, according to JacketsOnline.com and CoachingSearch.com. When contacted on Saturday by the AJC, Adams said he was aware of the situation: “I heard something like that may happen, and that’s one of the main reasons I decided to visit Auburn” … The state’s top kicker for 2013, Westminster’s Harrison Butker, said he was offered by Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson on Friday … Norcross junior RB Alvin Kamara got offered by Alabama on Tuesday but didn’t tell anybody until Saturday because he first wanted to meet Nick Saban at Junior Day, according to ESPN’s Kipp Adams

I think UGA is playing too much catch up!! Why did they put themselves in this position w/ so many prospects? CRG should be demanded a cut in pay if this year’s class finishes out of the Top 10!! If miraculously finishes in Top 5, then a bonus is in order!!

Signing day predictions:

Goldman- FSU
L. Williams- FSU
Darby- FSU
Louis- FSU ….don’t believe the rumors.
J. Williams- Georgia
A. Young- Georgia
Armstead- Oregon
K. Alexander- LSU

Oh well. It looks like a massacre on Febuary 1st for us Eagle fans…… The most discouraging news today was that Eddie Goldman refused to talk to our coaches even though they flew out to Maryland… His parents broke the bad news to them.

Chizik needs to step up or he’ll get fired. Last year’s NC was a fluke. Cam won it. Not Chizik!

I’m tired of getting beat to death by Bama!!!

Saban offered a RB in Georiga a scholarship? I would make him put it in writing — have Saban sign it — the AD sign it and the President sign it. That way when they renege on the offer, the player can sue UA.

Adams is going to flip to Auburn and Williams will tag along with him on the return trip to Auburn. Hope I’m wrong, but the hints are strongly pointing to Auburn. Seems obvious to me that Adams has been looking for a way out of his Tech commitment. He must figure that the school work is much easier at Auburn, so why go to a school where you might actually have to study. Seems to me that when these kids that has, so called commited to a school, then takes a late visit to another school this late in the game and then goes into hiding, almost always flip.

BS Go Blue. I have been keeping up with Michigan for a good many years now and I can’t remember the last time Michighan won a NT. Shoot I been watching you guys sense the Bo and Woody days. Michigan was one of my favorite teams once. Couldn’t stand Ohio State. Still can’t. You can take Ohio State, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Texas and Florida and burn their schools to the ground for all I care. Maybe we can send those Bama molesters to these schools.
