Will Adams: One of Georgia Tech’s top recruits headed to Auburn on visit

After wrestling with the decision all day, Georgia Tech OL commit Will Adams decided to take a last-minute visit to Auburn this weekend.

“I’m about to leave for Auburn in about an hour or so,” Adams told the AJC on Friday evening. “I’m still committed to Georgia Tech but I’m taking a visit to Auburn.”

The 6-foot-6, 280-pound offensive lineman from Sandy Creek High School has been committed to Georgia Tech since last summer. Adams said he got last-minute offers from Auburn and UGA on Thursday, and has decided to visit with the Tigers on the final recruiting weekend before signing day.

Adams said he talked multiple times on Friday with Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson. “There were a lot of things we talked about, and there are a lot of things that went into my decision to visit Auburn. I’ll talk more about it later.”

Did Johnson tell Adams that he risked losing his scholarship if he visited Auburn? “He basically said ‘If you’re looking, then we’re looking.’”

Why does Adams want to visit Auburn? “One of the main things is that I wanted to have a school to compare to Georgia Tech. I don’t want to have any regrets down the road. I didn’t want to regret not visiting Auburn. I just wanted to have one other school to visit to compare to Georgia Tech.”

What about UGA? Is there a chance he could make a quick recruiting trip with the Bulldogs, too? “No, no chance at all,” Adams said. “That ship sailed a long time ago with Georgia. They’ve got a great program and everything, but it’s just not for me.”

  • UPDATED: Whitewater OL Jordan Watson said he was offered by Georgia Tech on Friday afternoon but will remain committed to Kentucky. A source from Georgia Tech later told the AJC that an assistant stopped by Whitewater to check on prospects but did not extend a scholarship offer to Watson.
  • RELATED: Alpharetta OL Kyle Stallard (6-3, 275), will join Georgia Tech as a walk-on, according to his father. “Kyle was offered the spot on the team yesterday afternoon by [Georgia Tech assistant] Lamar Owens when he visited him at school. He will join the team beginning at summer workouts following graduation. Kyle was receiving both athletic and academic interest from other schools, but the combination of tradition, proximity and academics at Georgia Tech made this an easy decision.”

Apparently CPJ told him that if he’s shopping, Tech’s shopping. That doesn’t mean Tech won’t still take him if he wants to sign with Tech, but it DOES mean, that CPJ is not holding a spot for him now. If there’s still an opening, he might get it, but if there’s not, then he goes elsewhere. And I love what he said about the Dwags……”That ship sailed a long time ago.” In other words, Dwag fans, he may HAVE been a life-long fan, but he’s not interested now, even if you are.

Rick I think CPJ would let the offer stand IF WILL said he really wanted TECH but had to make sure. That is not a change in CPJ’s policy. It is Both taking a RISK and not knowing what will happen in the end. CPJ will pull the offer but it doesn’t mean he can’t re-offer if he feels the recruit is Honest.

This recruit is committed to UK, doesn’t CPJ know the meaning of the WORD commitment?

If Coach Kung Fu Panda is going to get up on his high horse about the WORD COMMITMENT, then he should NOT WANT another Recruit that breaks his commitment to UK.

Basically CPJ wants every other HC to also enforce HIS RULES, and since he cannot have that, then he is one big hypocrite.

If violation of one’s commitment makes GT not want a Recruit, then they/CPJ/GT should not WANT A RECRUIT THAT VIOLATES their commitment to another College, in this case UK!

What a effin’ hypocrite!

I don’t know what this means for Mr. Adams. Like PJ said, if he is looking, they are looking. If another guy comes in and accepts an offer, Mr. Adams may be out of a spot. CPJ has said before that he does not rush recruits into making a decision. He wants them to make all the visits they need to, do all the thinking necessary, and commit when they know that is the school they want to attend. I don’t consider Mr. Adams to be the diva type where he would commit somewhere until a better offer comes along, but in fairness to Georgia Tech and CPJ’s policy, he should have made all of the visits he needed before he decided to commit.

P. Bull Terrier

This one is hard to figure. Adams is happily committed to Tech for months, then finally gets an offer from his lifelong favorite school (UGA), so he decides to risk his Tech scholarship so he can visit – Auburn?!?!

As I was reading the story, I thought the Auburn visit probably meant he was headed to Georgia. It appears that he doesn’t value his offer from Tech as highly as he did when he committed. I figured he had decided he would rather go to UGA than to Tech so the risk of losing his offer from Tech didn’t matter much to him. Under those circumstances, why not visit Auburn? But the last paragraph makes it pretty clear he isn’t headed to UGA. It sounds like there are still some hard feelings over the late offer.

It almost looks like a game of chicken between Adams and Paul Johnson. PJ says he will start looking for someone else to fill the scholarship if Adams visits Auburn. Since there aren’t a lot of 6′6″, 280 lb. offensive linemen sitting around waiting for offers from schools of Tech’s caliber, Adams decided to call PJ’s bluff.

Then again who knows? This is a teenager, after all.

CpJ has explained why he recruits committed players many times. If that explanation doesn’t hold water for you, oh well. But we all know you’re just a CPJ hater who doesn’t believe in the coach and his offense, so you’re on a mission to find any justification to run him off campus.

I’ll give Johnson credit, he doesn’t let a bunch of teenagers dictate how he is going to operate, which is more than I can say for some of you guys. This thing has become more like a socially acceptable form of pedophilia. Most of you don’t give a crap about these kids. Get them on the auction block. I don’t know how most of you guys do it. No reason to get all twisted here. Will did not look around to much before he commited and has been all GT since he commited. He also was not pursued to hard before the commitment except for maybe UK. He like a lot of recruits are getting love from schools they never heard from until the last two weeks as schools are trying to tie up thier rosters. I don’t like it but I can’t blame him or Crawford for liking the attention and wanting to take the OV. Crawford in my opinion is gone if the U offers, but Will could easily still be with GT next week. I hope he enjoys his visit and then decides GT is in fact the school for him and remembers GT wanted him all along and not as a last minute filler.
The kids I feel bad for are the Rutgers commits, talk about getting sucker punched. The U will probably get two more commits alone from them.

_________________

You and many GT alums love to wax poetic about how CPJ is trying to build character & teach “life lessons” and I can see very clearly that that is pure unadulterated BS!

If CPJ has a REAL PROBLEM with Recruits that don’t HONOR THEIR COMMITMENT, then CPJ needs to STAY UP on his high horse and tell the Recruits that he poaches from Wofford & Elon & Furman, then they need to KEEP THEIR COMMITMENTS to those colleges/HCs.

Instead, CPJ gladly welcomes those Recruits that he poaches from D1-AA programs, yet he throws around the word commitment like he’s the bastion of honor & integrity.

All he has to do is simply tell those Recruits from smaller programs that GT poaches from that they need to KEEP their commitments to those colleges and then he won’t come across as a hypocrite.

Just because CPJ says, “this is my policy” that doesn’t mean that I can’t apply reasonable LOGIC to that policy and then formulate a legitimate opinion that says his policy is HYPOCRITICAL!

All you CPJ-boot-licking-toadies take everything he says as gospel without thinking for yourselves!
