JaQuay Williams: On the verge of flipping from Auburn to UGA? (UPDATED)

Jaquay will sign in Feb. 1?

You know those rumors about longtime Auburn WR commit JaQuay Williams flipping to UGA?

They could shoot to the moon on Thursday.

UGA coach Mark Richt is expected to visit Sandy Creek High School on Thursday to speak with Williams, who is ranked as the state’s No. 1 prospect at WR.

“Honestly, all of this has kind of surprised me; I didn’t think Georgia would still be in it,” Sandy Creek coach Chip Walker told the AJC.

Georgia got involved very late with Williams, who committed to Auburn over Ohio State last summer. UGA only offered a few months ago and convinced him to take an official visit last weekend.

One day after returning from UGA, Williams had Auburn’s Gene Chizik waiting for him after class at Sandy Creek on Monday. It was Auburn’s recent coaching changes that caused Williams to look around.

“I think Georgia has some really good things to sell to JaQuay,” Walker said. “There’s the fact that they have a returning quarterback in Aaron Murray, who is established and can get the ball to him. The offense that Georgia runs is wide receiver-friendly. I think they’ve got a crew of wide receivers. Those are some of the big things that have really helped out UGA with JaQuay.”

Will JaQuay still take an official visit to Florida this weekend? “I don’t think he’s going to Florida unless something changes.”

There’s definitely something going on with Williams, and it may not be fully resolved until next week’s signing day. The normally outgoing Williams has had little to say publicly to the media and privately to other recruits since before his UGA visit.

“He has gone underground and really doesn’t want to talk to anybody except for his family,” Walker said. “He doesn’t want to talk to anybody except for his family. I just think he’s trying to figure out where he wants to be.”

Walker knows wide receivers. He coached the greatest WR ever produced by the state of Georgia: That would be NFL All-Pro Calvin Johnson, who played at Sandy Creek High School. (Yes, there’s Forest Park’s Hines Ward, too)

“It’s not fair to compare anybody to Calvin Johnson; he was 6-4, 215 pounds, ran a 4.4 and power-cleaned 330 pounds when he was here,” Walker said. “I think from a physical standpoint, JaQuay is the second-best we’ve ever had out of all our D1 wide receivers. JaQuay is going to be a really, really, really good football player at the next level. You know who he reminds me of? Justin Blackmon of Oklahoma State. He’s 6-3 or 6-2, he’s thick and muscular, and really put together. That’s JaQuay Williams.”

UPDATE at 12:05 p.m: Mark Richt and UGA recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner will be at Sandy Creek around 1 p.m. Thursday, according to Walker.

  • RELATED: What about UGA and Cedar Grove OL Brandon Greene? He’s committed to Alabama but visited UGA last month, reportedly angering Nick Saban. Mark Richt may make an in-home visit with Greene on Thursday night, according to ESPN’s Kipp Adams.

Crimson Crush,

One good thing has come out of Alabama — your coach has given the lie to one overused cliche that cheaters never prosper. His habit of over-signing players has begun to get some attention, though. Justin Taylor is still trying to get the knife out of his back. Richt has proved he doesn’t treat his players as if they are an expendable piece of meat like Saint Nick.

Oooh Satan is angered, well its all fair until you get a Crimson and “Grey” shirt. Richts playing a fair game and Saban has done the same thing for years. He’ll get over it.

From the initial reactions I am guessing the Dawgs think it will be a minimum three bottles of holy water event for Saint Spray Tan to work at least one recruit out of this group of Georgia kids that are currently committed elsewhere :-)

If Williams wants to actually have a good career for a WR he will pick UGA or any team besides AU.

First Chizik has that spread O and then they went out and hired Meyer’s QB coach as OC. With the QB’s on hand and the coaching they will get, I don’t see alot of yards for the AU WR’s in the near future. Talk about Bobo, but he knows how to coach up a QB.

This kid is Ga bound, count on it. He has been second guessing Auburn for quite some time. The wheels are about to fall off that Auburn car. The Tide will RULE as long as Sabin is there. Auburn’s coach will be in div 2 sooner than later.

I reiterate…too soon to anoint Calvin Johnson as the greatest WR from Georgia. He has come nowhere near Hines Ward’s accomplishments (let me know when CJ has a handful of Super Bowl rings and a Superbowl MVP trophy and we’ll talk about the comparison with Ward), and if it is based on potential and college accomplishments, AJ Green may have as much of the former and definitely had more of the latter.

There are 500 high school WR’s in this state this year….And the Dawgs show up LATE with the BEST one……Geez.

People are so quick to judge before thorough research. CMR was invited to attend church. Soooo..why would a christian man not want to attend?? I’m not the biggest CMR fan, but I do admire respectful programs. It’s a lot easier to win when you cheat. Let’s hope Bama won’t be the next USC or Ohio State. It would be funny if Nick Satan gets you in trouble and leaves to coach the Indy Colts like Pete Carroll.

Why would a stud WR want to play for an Auburn team with awful QBs ? Plus Auburn doesn’t have any immediate answers at QB being recruited for next season.

Mean while Murray will be in Athens two more years. Plus both of UGA’s backups QBs are better then anyting Auburn has to offer.

Kid will sign with Auburn – just how I see it.
Reports were that he was dressed out in Auburn gear for his visit with Chizik.

GA is pushing hard for this kid because they know Patterson is not going to commit to UGA.

I think JHC will go to FSU.
I think A. Young will go to UGA
I think UGA will pick up Memphis DB – Dawson.
Overall – good class with star power at RB and OT.

2013 class more important for UGA.

Richt could be on the hotseat again – SEC East will come down to the winner of the USC and FL game. Both will beat UGA meaing FL and USC will both have to have 3 conference losses for UGA to win the EAST. Vandy will be better, TN should be better, KY should be better – but these bottom 3 are no match.
More concerned with FL right now, Just loaded with talent and year 2 should click for them. UGA barely beat FL last year – and UGA’s O-Line will have 3 starters.
Not sure what to think of MO. They looked good in their bowl game – and might be good enough to scare some teams – probably need some depth. Welcome MO to the SEC EAST!

Funny how many people fail to grasp that concept Walker . Of course , even if a person was as ignorant about the Internet as many people seem to be , you would think just knowing a little about Georgia recruiting would clue them in .

In todays world Georgia recruiting has less to do with UGA than it does with every other school in the nation . Seriously … Vanderbilt fans started showing up and talking smack because UGA is trying to flip an instate recruit late in the game .

When UGA drops the ball on so many of the states recruits year after year and lets them commit elsewhere before getting around to offering scholarships … why does it confuse Dawg fans that so many out of state programs fans check in to see how THEIR recruits are doing ? ;-)

You weak azz UGA fans are a hoot. You talk a great game but play like sheet. Nick Saban will take what he wants and leave the rest to the others. Players are lined up to play for him. He doesn’t have the missing man formations. Football is business at Alabama and it shows in the trophy case. You keep the preacher man …please. One things for sure, wherever these recruits sign the UGA haters will be back the day after NSD and the day after that and the day after that spouting their drivel. You must have a pretty pathetic life to get on the internet and try to tear down other people and other universities. I have never gone to a recruting site or another team’s blog to post some juvenile crap. I guess that’s the difference between a fan and a fanatic and someone who has their own life vs someone who has to live vicariously through the accomplishments and/or misfortunes of others.

Hines Ward has played on better teams and has played longer than Calvin Johnson. If you were starting a team who would you choose 1st at WR ward or Johnson?

Ward is a all around better football player but Johnson is a top 3 WR in the NFL.

JB,

“And the Dawgs show up LATE with the BEST one……Geez.”

ESPN may rank him the BEST, but many others may consider him the 4th. UGA coaches may look at him how to fit in the Murray offense, and don’t give him a high mark if he is not a good fit for Murray.
