The latest Ken Griffey, known as Trey Griffey, has committed to play football for Arizona and new coach Rich Rodriguez.
Numerous media reports surfaced of the commitment Monday night and the younger Griffey, the son of the baseball great Ken Griffey Jr., confirmed it to the Orlando Sentinel.
“My parents said, ‘It’s up to you, you got to do what you want to do … what you feel is right,’” Griffey told the Sentinel. “I’m going to the University of Arizona. It doesn’t get any better than that.”
A 6-foot-2, 190-pound wide receiver, he caught 72 passes for 970 yards as a senior at Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando.

Dr. Phillips High School doesn’t have the recognition of what one may refer to as a highly competitive program. It’s probably a private school catering to the elitist & wealthy. After a few smashes to the mouth he’ll probably quit and play baseball.

It’s relevant because it’s Trey Griffey…lmao!!! How many times is Jeff Jordan going to quit playing basketball?..lol. By being athlete’s son, I can see why he wasn’t highly recruited. He has no reason to work hard and most of them go to schools where sports is not that competitive. This doesn’t mean the kid has no athletic talent, after all, he did score a D1 scholarship.

Morons,
“ron you are a moron, Dr. Phillips is not a private school, and River he was not considered a top prospect by NONE of the FLorida schools.”
I guess correct grammar and English were not your strong points, from where you come from. I believe the man is entitled to his own opinion, without being attacked by someone calling him a moron.
The kid made his choice, and most likely he would have been able to find a school in Florida if he had desired to do so. He will probably do quite well, because he comes from good stock.

Dr. Phillips High School is a huge public high school (8A) in the Orange County Public School system. They have approximately 4,000 kids enrolled. Their football team finished with a 10-2 season in 2011…

this was the “AJC college sports recruiting” blog, so I think the story is noteworthy and does belong here. He is the son and grandson of very well known MLB players.

Congrats to the young man. I’m surprised this AJC headline didn’t read “Arizona outmaneuvers UGA for football prospect” or something like that.

RedandBlackDawg … You ended a sentence with a preposition. It’s a good idea to be correct while slamming someone for being incorrect.

For those of you not familiar with Dr. Phillips High it’s located in Orlando, FL and the school has a lot of talent there which is why it’s heavily recruited by Nick Saban and Jimbo Fisher. Saban picked up Demetrius Hart and Clinton Dix from the 2011 class and Florida State has receiver Kenny Shaw who made a big impact for the Noles this year. Trey Griffey broke all of Kenny Shaws records there this year. Maybe Georgia should start recruiting there as well. And there starting QB signed with Boise State which kicked Georgia’s but this past season.

I’m proud of you Dawg fans of late……it’s about time you’ve figured out blaming Alabama & Saben will not improve your football team!
No one’s fault but Richt’s, your recruiting class is a scramble this late in the game.
BTW, we are going to sign DGB!! a little birdy told me!!!!!

Dude, tons of athletes’ kids excel. Michael Jordan’s kids simply aren’t that talented. I don’t mean to go all “Jimmy the Greek” on you, but if a football player fella takes a basketball player (or a soccer player, track athlete, gymnast etc.) that he met in college for a wife – and this happens quite a bit – then there is a great chance that their kid will be an athlete, perhaps an even better athlete than either parent. But if an athlete marries a model, beauty queen etc. then that diminishes the chances that the child will be a great athlete. And yes, it also reduces the chance that the kid will apply himself to sports, because let me tell you, those former lady athletes will push their sons to get out there and practice, to hit those weights, and to quit being “soft” and “a quitter” more than the dads will.

Just checked his Rivals profile. The kid is a 3 star recruit. He doesn’t have that many major offers though: just Iowa State, Michigan State and Washington State (schools desperate for speed wherever they can find it) as well as being recruited by Indiana, who never gave a formal scholarship offer. This may be due to his going back and forth between football and baseball, but who knows. But Rich Rodriguez turned a lot of 2 and 3 star recruits into stars, like Pat White, who wasn’t recruited by any of the big SEC schools.
folks asking why this is story is being reported:
If you are that angry, why did you read the story in the first place, let alone comment on it. First off, Griffey is the grandson of a beloved former Atlanta Brave. Second, well as recruiting is going kinda slow for UGA and Georgia Tech right now (wink wink) he has to get news from SOMEWHERE …

Dr. Phillips won the Florida all-sports award for the state’s highest classification (8A) for the 2010-11 school year. They don’t come any bigger or better. Barry Larkin’s kid, Shane, now playing basketball at Miami, graduated from there last year. Catcher A.J. Pierzynski is a graduate.

Ron…you are an idiot. You waste time posting, at least make sure you have some good information.
Close to half of the students there get free lunch because of their low family income, it is a public school with around 4000 students and it is very diverse racially being pretty equal in terms of white, black and Hispanic students.
Again, that took 30 seconds in a google search.

The Phillips HS is a public school and it caters to everyone. There are no elitest there..just kids who want to learn and are willing to put an effor into excelling in education and sports. Get the facts, before you spew out ignorance.
