Ryan Rodwell is commitment No. 17 for Georgia Tech

Quick courtship: Georgia Tech zeroed in on Florida punter Ryan Rodwell around two weeks ago and landed his commitment on Sunday

Georgia Tech addressed its problems on special teams on Sunday by landing the commitment of Ryan Rodwell, a punter from DeLand, Fla.

Rodwell was commitment No. 17 for Georgia Tech, and the third within the last four days – following Australia DT Adam Gotsis and Florida DB Lynn Griffin. On Friday, the Yellow Jackets withdrew the scholarship offer to a longtime commitment, Lanier County DE-LB Junior Gnonkonde, because his coach was told his test scores were too low.

Back to Rodwell: He took an official visit to Georgia Tech this weekend without knowing if the Yellow Jackets would offer. He said he met with coach Paul Johnson on Sunday before leaving campus.

“He sat down with me and my parents, and asked how we liked the campus and visit,” Rodwell told the AJC. “He just came out and said ‘We’re going to do it a little backwards here. Normally, we want a punter or kicker to walk-on and try to earn a scholarship. We’re going to do it a little different because you’re from out of state and we think you can win the punter’s job.’ Coach Johnson offered me and asked ‘Is this what you want to do?’ Yes, I did, and I committed.”

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Rodwell committed to Georgia Tech over The Citadel. He was also invited to walk-on at Miami and Marshall, and had interest from South Florida and Central Florida. Georgia Tech, which had been doing a nationwide search for a punter or kicker, began to show serious interest in Rodwell about two weeks ago.

“It was a quick process but I’m glad it all worked out,” Rodwell said. “When I went on the visit, I wasn’t sure if they were going to offer. But I was hoping for it, and it happened. I’m pretty excited, well shocked.”

Rodwell, who has a 3.5 GPA and will major in Industrial Engineering, averaged 43.6 yards per punt last season in high school.

“As far as expectations, they want me to be more consistent at punter than they had this past season,” Rodwell said. “Consistency is very important to them. They want me to come in, earn the starting position, and perform.”

RELATED: One of Georgia Tech’s remaining targets, DE Alex McCalister of Clemmons, N.C., will announce his college decision at 1 p.m. Monday, according to Rivals. His finalists are Georgia Tech, Florida and North Carolina. McCalister made an official visit to Florida this weekend.

With as much practice as this kid is going to get thanks to Johson’s horrendous offense, he could be the first punter taken in the first round in recent memory.

Ok, I’ll take the bait, WnE. They said they THOUGHT he’d be ok because they probably thought he would be. I don’t see the net gain to Johnson here to lie. On the one hand you seem to think he’s a good player (not that you’ve ever seen him play) but on the other you think we don’t want him because he’s not good enough. It doesn’t add up.

Now it’s my turn to ask you a question. What does Johnson have to gain by letting a player go that might be good enough to play at Florida or Georgia at a position of desperate need?
__________________

CPJ has nothing to gain by letting him go, CPJ never intended for this to happen, he wants him at GT,

I have never said that CPJ is cutting him loose for another Recruit, you are confusing me with someone else.

My issue is with GT telling him he is OK for four months and then coming back late in the process and telling him to take the tests again.

Based on his HS transcript and his NCAA Core GPA, that has not changed much since his HC has said that he has never made a “C”, so GT could EASILY figure out 4 months ago what test score it would take to get him accepted to GT based on the separate scale used for FB recruits.

If he was borderline now then he was also borderline 4-months ago but GT didn’t NOT tell him, they made him believe he was OK, and the HC/guardian was in constant contact with GT, and they kept telling him he was OK.

If GT tells him he borderline (4-months ago) then he keeps testing and taking test prep courses and he ALSO KEEPS LOOKING at other schools, something that CPJ HATES.

Basically the only person that has anything to gain by telling him that he is OK Academically is CPJ since he hates it when recruits shop around.

The recruit has no reason to risk EVERYTHING by not continuing to take tests during those 4-months that GT told him he was OK, unless he believe he was OK based on GT’s standards.

Once again I am assuming that the HC/Guardian is telling the truth.

I’m not saying that CPJ did this to open up another scholly, I’m saying that CPJ told him he was OK to keep him from looking at other colleges and then it back-fired when CPJ couldn’t get admissions to budge.

It doesn’t rise to level of Saban, but it is still dirty pool.

Supersize, I was being a little facetious but I do think he has a chance to make more of an impact on the 2012 GT team then any other recruit. If he comes in and punts well and consistently then it will make a huge difference we didn’t have last year. Most of the other recruits will need time before they start making an impact.

@ Really? when I say “1 or 2″, I generally don’t mean that literally; it is synonymous with “SEVERAL” or “A FEW.” Since Hill declared and since Burnett probably won’t be able to play ever again, that opened up 1 or 2 more spots, this time meaning literally 1 or 2 more. And with the offer to Junior G being rescinded, that opens up yet another one. FACTS, bubba, FACTS, not ASSUMPTIONS.

Fair enough, WnE. As I’ve said, if ANYONE at Tech said that he’d be ok, then I would come down as hard on my school as anyone. If they were clear in setting expectations that he was borderline, then my anger is decidedly less.

The reason I’m inclined to believe that they were honest about it is because this happened last year when a recruit was told he would not be admitted, but that happened a lot earlier in the process. That being the case, Tech has a track record or honest dealing with recruits and I have no reason to believe otherwise here.

GTBob, you are probably right on that. Other players need time to develop, but punters and kickers just come on and do their jobs. They might improve, but you pretty much know from the start what they are capable of doing, and they generally do it from the get-go.

George, I think there’s a big difference between saying, “it looks like you’re going to be ok,” and “you’re ok.” Even his HS coach said the words, “it LOOKS like you’re going to be ok.” That might have been a naive assumption on everybody’s part, but it sure doesn’t sound like it was an attempt to deliberately mislead him.

It is a telling statement about the quality of fans the trade school attracts that none of them care how badly cpj treated the 1st commitment for this year.

Did cpj change your program into the most hated in the south or did the ghetto change cpj into the classless hypocrite that coaches his players to cheap shot and punch from behind?

Most likely the turd foud the biggest cesspool to land in.

He averaged about 43.5 yards per punt and averaged a hang time over 4 seconds per punt. He also just started kicking long field goals, going 3-6 with a long of about 48 (a 60 yard field goal was hit in practice). PAT’s can also be attempted as he was successful on most of his attempts. However, punting is his forte.

Really? come on now, bubba. All you have to do is read what MC posted on that other blog, and it is obvious to anyone that Johnson didn’t mistreat him in the least. He didn’t make any promises; he simply said (at least according to his HS coach/guardian) that it looked like he was ok. The fact that things did NOT turn out ok is not a reflection on Johnson. Johnson didn’t take (and apparently come up short on) the tests. And, by the way, Tech is the most hated only in Athens, not the rest of the south. Obsess much, bubba?
