DE Alex McCalister commits to Florida over Georgia Tech and UNC

UPDATE (1 p.m.): McCalister put on a blue cap at his signing ceremony, committing to Florida over Georgia Tech and North Carolina

It’s decision day for Alex McCalister, maybe the biggest “mystery recruit” in the Southeast.

The 6-foot-6, 220-pound defensive end from Clemmons, N.C., is announce his college decision at 1 p.m. Monday between Georgia Tech, Florida and North Carolina, according to Rivals.

Georgia Tech was rumored to be the early frontunner for McCalister, but now there is talk that McCalister’s official visit to Florida this past weekend went really well. However, no one knows for sure because McCalister hasn’t done any media interviews. Even the college coaches recruiting him are sort of in the dark on what Alex will do.

Which college will Alex pick? Check back shortly after 1 p.m.

Georgia Tech will find out Jan. 23 about DE Alex McCalister (247Sports.com)

Georgia Tech will find out Jan. 23 about DE Alex McCalister (247Sports.com)

What kind of prospect is Alex? We asked Rusty Mansell, National Recruiting for 247sports.com:

“I like him a lot. I think he has a tremendous upside. He has great length at 6-6 and he can play in space. I think he can play early on just rushing the passer and give people problems. When you look at him four years now, it will not surprise me to see him at 6-7, 250 pounds coming off the edge.”

Georgia Tech has 17 commits after landing punter Ryan Rodwell and Australian DT Adam Gotsis over the weekend, while withdrawing the scholarship offer from a longtime commitment, DE-LB Junior Gnonkonde of Lanier County.

The Yellow Jackets could sign as many as 19-20 on National Signing Day (Feb. 1).

Alex is originally from South Georgia, so GA Tech has been one of his favorites all along. I think if FSU would have shown serious interest in him, that would have made things interesting, but since Florida recently made a late hard push, they have become legitimate contenders for his commitment after barely being considered about a month ago.

North Carolina was the co-favorite with the Jackets for a while, but with the recent coaching changes, Alex, naturally lost touch with them and then had virtually no relationship with the new coaching staff and how he might be used if he signed with the Tar Heels. No one knows what kind of progress they’ve really made up with him recently because he is such a private person, but the thoughts are it’s probably not enough at this point.

Therefore, the best guess is that this will come down to between GA Tech and Florida. GA Tech was the probable choice until this past weekend, and the word out of Gainesville, whether it can be believed or not, is that Alex thoroughly enjoyed himself and almost committed this past weekend. If this was indeed the case, then it would be safe to assume that Alex will announce for Florida this afternoon.

On the other hand, we all know that on occasions, sometimes reporters “misunderstand” what the recruits say, or are told things by the recruits that they think they want to hear so that they’ll just leave them alone, so I guess we’ll find out together this afternoon what hat will be donned by “Big Mac” at lunch time.

Interesting…JG’s schollie went from “REVOKED” to “withdrawn” since more facts have come to light. Nice to know journalists check their sources first…

Sucks for Junior, but he (and others involved with him) knew what was needed score-wise and it simply didn’t happen. Luckily, he still meets NCAA minimums. Best of luck to him!

Oh yes. Florida all the way. He wants to play with a better class of athletes on the defensive line.

Class beginning 2012:

Jonathan Bullard – 5 Star Defensive Lineman
Damien Jacobs – 4 Star Defensive Lineman
Dante Phillips – 4 Star Defensive Lineman
Quinteze Williams – 4 Star Defensive Lineman

Thanks for update, great job this week on all the recruiting news. guess it will be a busy couple of weeks for you till signing day.

Would love to see Alex McCalister pick Tech but I’ve got a feeling it’s not going to happen. Tech does not get many recruits that commit on a scheduled presser like Alex is doing, add fact that Tech signed 3 other player this weekend. 1 for Phil Smith spot, 1 for Junior Gnonkonde spot, 1 for Alex McCalister/Delvin Tomlison’s spot

I hope CPJ is watching the playoffs – Special Teams and Kicking are deciding almost every game. (With the exception of Denver – NE.) Should turn on the lightbulb for somone at GT.

I was thinking the samething watching SF run that reverse toss sweep play, that was slick play and perfect for Tech’s offense. Tech runs a counter swwep but not a reverse like SF ran.

Since both UNC and UF are both far superior to the cheats we all know he will not be going to the hood of Atlanta.

Unless of course “bling” and “rides” are involved. Kenny Anderson had a sweet ride I remember.

Guy’s a toothpick! 6′6″ 220 lbs?!? He’s a redshirt, and we’ll all forget about him by the time 2013 comes around. 220lb DEs don’t play D1 football.

I can’t see him gaining the “quality” 30-40 lbs needed to fill his 6′6″ frame until at least 2014 (his RS soph season).

RE: the post on PJ watching the playoffs and kicking game …..
IMO, PJ goes for so many 4th downs, especially when the O is in the 40-50yd FG range, that he thinks it’s a waste of a scholarship to give one to P/PKs. But, after reading the comments of the kid from FL, it looks like maybe PJ’s stubborness is wavering a little?

Bingo. Exact same build as Dawson that UGA is apparently recruiting on the other page. If they were basketball players it would be great, but lanky, tall DE’s???? Not so much.

I was thinking the same thing. Tech hasnt had a good class since Gailey and O`Liarey. Johnson is killing that hapless program and I love him for it.

slydog

For those who are whining (lol) about tall, lanky DE. If you actually look at a game in its entirety instead of sack numbers, you would know that there a DLineman having his hands up causes more disruption in the passing game tahn sacks. You cannot and will not always get to the QB, put you can at least get your hands up and disrupt a passing lane or bat a ball down. In a 3-4 scheme, where there is at least 2 players blitzing at all times, being “tall” is a plus. Dawson and McAlister will both be playing OLB with their hands in the dirt or covering a tight end. Both of these 17-18 young men can gain 20-30 lbs of pure muscle in one summer.

George Stein

As I’ve said before, a more accurate way to measure the class is by averaging the stars, because this takes away the bias in favor of bigger classes. If we go by that measure, our rank is 29th nationally.

@ slydog

If a coach that is 10-1 against your cheats needs to “study” football, then please explain to everyone what exactly that says about your own program?

George Stein

January 23rd, 2012

Fair point, slydog. I do think you need to try to get to the QB and there’s certainly value in pressuring him even if you don’t quite get there, but I think that getting your hands up is not taught particularly well by many coaches.

George Stein

That’s true, GTBob. Think of it this way: we are currently ranked 8th in the ACC by Rivals. However, if we eliminate the bias in favor of bigger classes and simply go by average stars, we rise to 5th, behind FSU, Clemson, Miami, & VT.

UGA, by way of comparison, averages 3.35 stars and ranks 5th in the SEC. They would tie for third in the ACC.

I think the misconception about Tech Talent now vs Gailey is that Gailey had 7 or 8 real stars on his teams. Guys who appeared talent wise who could of played anywhere. Not really seeing that at Tech now. Just my opinion.
