UPDATE (1 p.m.): McCalister put on a blue cap at his signing ceremony, committing to Florida over Georgia Tech and North Carolina
It’s decision day for Alex McCalister, maybe the biggest “mystery recruit” in the Southeast.
The 6-foot-6, 220-pound defensive end from Clemmons, N.C., is announce his college decision at 1 p.m. Monday between Georgia Tech, Florida and North Carolina, according to Rivals.
Georgia Tech was rumored to be the early frontunner for McCalister, but now there is talk that McCalister’s official visit to Florida this past weekend went really well. However, no one knows for sure because McCalister hasn’t done any media interviews. Even the college coaches recruiting him are sort of in the dark on what Alex will do.
Which college will Alex pick? Check back shortly after 1 p.m.
What kind of prospect is Alex? We asked Rusty Mansell, National Recruiting for 247sports.com:
“I like him a lot. I think he has a tremendous upside. He has great length at 6-6 and he can play in space. I think he can play early on just rushing the passer and give people problems. When you look at him four years now, it will not surprise me to see him at 6-7, 250 pounds coming off the edge.”
Georgia Tech has 17 commits after landing punter Ryan Rodwell and Australian DT Adam Gotsis over the weekend, while withdrawing the scholarship offer from a longtime commitment, DE-LB Junior Gnonkonde of Lanier County.
The Yellow Jackets could sign as many as 19-20 on National Signing Day (Feb. 1).
