Georgia's No. 1 WR, JaQuay Williams, is scheduled to visit UGA this weekend and maybe Florida the next. Williams is committed to Auburn (AJC)
UGA will take its best shot at one of Auburn’s best football recruits this weekend.
Sandy Creek High School’s JaQuay Williams, who is ranked as Georgia’s No. 1 prospect at WR by some, is scheduled to make an official visit to Georgia this weekend. Williams is part of a small group which includes another Auburn commitment, WR Ricardo Louis of Miami Beach, and two players pledged to the Bulldogs – OL John Theus of Jacksonville and Dodge County DE Leonard Floyd.
The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Williams has been committed to Auburn since last summer.
“That’s what JaQuay told me today, that he was going for sure to Georgia this weekend,” Sandy Creek coach Chip Walker told the AJC on late Thursday night. “Now Florida next week? He said he didn’t know if he was going there or somewhere else.”
WR is a position of need for UGA after two former commitments at the position, Flowery Branch’s CJ Curry and Georgia Military junior college’s Lonnie Outlaw, won’t be signing with the Bulldogs. Georgia has one commitment at the position with ML King’s Blake Tibbs.
UGA recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner made a late offer to JaQuay Williams a couple of months ago and has been vigorously pursuing him ever since.
“Coach Garner came down here and explained to JaQuay what happened during the recruiting process from their side,” Walker said. “They were waiting on his grades after the first semester, they had a couple of early commits, they have the kid from MLK that they really like, and they are after a JC kid [Cordarrelle Patterson] … Georgia has come back in on JaQuay and tried to do a really good job of touching up.”
What does UGA like about JaQuay? “I think his size and his ability to make plays down the field,” Walker said. “He’s a guy that’s going to go up and make plays. He’s a physical presence on the football field. And he’s got speed. I know Malcolm Mitchell can fly. Everybody knows that. He’s something special. But JaQuay may be more explosive than the other guys they have after Malcolm Mitchell.”
Walker knows wide receivers. He coached the greatest WR ever produced by the state of Georgia. That would be NFL All-Pro Calvin Johnson, who played at Sandy Creek High School.

State's No. 1 WR Jaquay Williams is taking a peek at other schools after Auburn's staffing changes but remains committed to the Tigers (Photo by Allyson Merrill)
“It’s not fair to compare anybody to Calvin Johnson; he was 6-4, 215 pounds, ran a 4.4 and power-cleaned 330 pounds when he was here,” Walker said. “I think from a physical standpoint, JaQuay is the second-best we’ve ever had out of all our D1 wide receivers. JaQuay is going to be a really, really, really good football player at the next level. You know who he reminds me of? Justin Blackmon of Oklahoma State. He’s 6-3 or 6-2, he’s thick and muscular, and really put together. That’s JaQuay Williams.”
More than 30 colleges have stopped by Sandy Creek to check on JaQuay in the last couple of months. Just on Thursday, Missouri and TCU called to see if they could enter the sweepstakes. There have been a lot of rumors circulating about how solid his commitment was to Auburn after all the coaching changes. It appears that Auburn patched things up with Williams during his official visit last week.
“I think the visit to Auburn was really good for JaQuay and his entire family,” Walker said. “I think coach [Gene Chizik] did a good job of making sure JaQuay knew what was going on, and understanding the direction he was taking the program. I think JaQuay and his family are a lot more comfortable with everything now.”
Williams is still committed to Auburn. So why visit UGA and maybe Florida? “I think for JaQuay and his family, this is going to give them something to see besides Auburn, and to be able to compare places.”
Williams has been sensitive to the rumors, tweeting:
How [are] people saying I’m going to flip when I been screaming War Eagle since July. Hate when ppl put words in your mouth.

Auburn is first offer for Westminster's Harrison Butker (AJC)
RELATED: On Thursday, Auburn was the first school to offer Westminster’s Harrison Butker, who is the state’s No. 1 kicker for the class of 2013. This past season, the 6-foot-4 Butker made 16 of 17 field goals, including a long of 51 yards. His only miss was from 59 yards. He averaged 39.5 yards per punt.
Grayson QB Nick Schuessler and OL Fred Zerblis are scheduled to visit Colorado State this weekend. The 6-4 Schuesller helped Grayson win the state championship in Georgia’s largest classification and has been compared to former UGA QB David Greene by his coach … Buford DL Dequan Clark committed to Georgia Southern … Kentucky made an in-home visit with twins committed to the Wildcats, Zack and Daron Blaylock, sons of former NBA All-Star Mooke Blaylock. Kentucky is also making a late run at Liberty County RB Shadrach Thornton and North Hall RB Imani Cross …

The fact that CPJ is not on the hot seat speaks volumes about the intelligence of Tech fans.
Yes, we should fire our coach who has the best winning percentage at Tech since Bobby Dodd and is the first Tech coach to win 8 games 3 of his first 4 years. That sounds like a smart plan. With our recruiting obstacles, he is probably the best we can get.

What recruiting obstacles Bob? Dont you get tired of hearing and making that excuss.Vandy pulls good players out of Georgia and I would think that Tech should be doing the same.In spite of your feelings I still believe that Gailey signed higher caliber talent.

That winning 8 games could be slightly enhanced by the fact that GT like most teams now play 12, 13 or 14 games but I certainly agree with your assessment of CPJ. He does a damn good job with the limitations placed on him. If only GT and UGA fans could all get their heads out of their fannies long enough to look around and actually see that the universe is not controlled or powered by FOOTBALL.

Vandy’s recruiting rankings the past 5 years (Rivals):
Unranked, Unranked, Unranked, Unranked, Unranked
Are you really using Vandy as an argument for positive recruiting? They might end up with a top 30 class this year. Whoop dee do.

Vandy is a great school, better than GT and much better than UGA. But they still offer jock majors (PE, Housing, Turf Management…sound familiar?). The easiest GT can offer is a BS in MGMT which is a joke compared to all of the engineerings. But it is still ranked ~30 in the nation and harder than normal MGMT degrees since it is a Bachelor of Science degree.
GT’s joke major is ranked higher than UGA’s “most highly esteemed” and hardest major. Hmmmmm

He signed Calvin, and had one decent overall class where the players actually overperformed when they got into CPJ’s system. Other then that he was terrible. Way worse then CPJ.

GTBob, don’t be so dismissive of Vandy. I do think something different is going on there. I just get the sense that the administration has empowered their coaching staff to go out and get better players and they will admit them. The next couple of years will tell the tale.

@ Rick James…GT fans do have notoriously thin skin–but I think you might be giving Auburn fans way to much credit. Have you ever talked to an Auburn fan about Cecil Newton? Wow…Their skin is as thin or thinner than Tech Fans. At least Tech fans realize they have bad football.

the pendulum swinging back up
this is a good time to look at the sec and the mark richt era so far.
sometimes we see the good seasons a team outside of uga has and don’t see the
times they struggle. this is how the sec has stacked up over the last 11 seasons–
most wins–
1-lsu–115
2-uga–106
3-florida 105
4-auburn–101
5-arkansas–86
5t-tennessee–86
7-south carolina–80
8-alabama–77 note they have won 98 but had to vacate 21 for ncaa rules
violations.
9-ole miss–62
10-kentucky–59
11-mii st–50
12-vanderbilt—39
second most wins is pretty solid in my opinion.
how have we matched up with the other sec teams and rival tech?
against tech 10-1
vandy 10-1
kentucky 9-2
auburn 7-4
south carolina 7-4
tennessee 7-4
ole miss 5-0
arkansas 5-1
bama 3-1
miss st 3-1
lsu 3-4
florida 3-8
winning record against everyone but lsu and florida with only the gators really bad.
overall against other sec teams 62-30.
how many times has each team finished ranked?? always a sign of a good season—
uga 9
lsu 9
florida 7
bama 6
auburn 6
tennessee 5
south carolina 3
ole miss 3
arkansas 2
miss st 1
kentucky 0
vandy 0
only 2 “bad” seasons in 11.
who has the most sec titles–
lsu 4
uga 2
florida 2
auburn 2
bama 1
who has the most division titles?
east-
uga 4
florida 3
tenn 3
sc 1
west-
lsu 5
bama 2
auburn 2
arkansas 2
how many coaches each one has had–
uga-1
lsu-2–both saban and miles have done well
auburn 2–tuberville was solid and chizik has the one great season
arkansas 2–nutt had a good run and petrino looks like a really good hire.
south carolina 2–holtz had a couple good seasons then fizzled. spurrier is a great coach.
tennessee–3–fulmer dropped off, kiffen made a mess and dooley looks to be a failure.
kentucky 3
miss st 3
florida 4–spurrier left, zook struggled, meyer had a great run and fell apart the last year, jury is out on muschamp.
ole miss 4
vandy 4
alabama 5–hot right now with saban but a mess before him.
I’m honestly the most excited about uga’s future that I have been in several years.
we started back working, looks like we have a great defensive staff, recruiting is strong.
i understand what we are up against. the last 6 years the national champ has
come from the sec but its more than just that—
during those 6 seasons the sec has had 11 teams finish ranked in the top 5.
six DIFFERENT teams have done it. –bama, auburn, arkansas, florida, uga and lsu.
to compare the pac 12 has had 6 top 5s, the big 12 had 5, the big ten had 4 and neither the acc or big east has had a single top 5 finish.
i know its easy to focus on what we havent gotten done yet–the national title.
thankful for the POSITIVE things cmr has done for uga.
most sec east titles during his tenure
second most wins
10-1 against tech
no probations
no vacating wins
great class last year and looks like another this year.
2009 and 2010 were tough but 2011 was a good rebound and I’m really excited about 2012 and forward.

The amount of talent Jimbo is collecting is getting downright scary folks! They already have three five starts and will probably get two more this class. Of course this does not include the ten recruits that are in the Rivals 100 and Rivals 250. This is getting downright nasty.

Unlike Dre Kirpatrick, who had enough to sell on the streets. In any case, the Orr was stupid by doing what he did. He has apologize in the press, said what he did was dumb and has learn his lesson. He has already been dealt with by Muschamp and will serve some kind of suspension and have to earn his rights back as one of the Gator football players. Muschamp is not tolerate of more than one screw up and this kid knows it. What the kid did is stupid and wrong (according to the law), and he better not mess up again while he is at Florida. But it is nothing when compared to Dre Kirpatrick.

Right now Vandy has 5 recruits from GA. Four 3 stars and one 4 star. GT has 9 from GA. One 4 star and eight 3 stars. This might be Vandy’s best recruiting class ever. How is Vandy better? Plus you need to learn the difference in academic requirements between the two schools. Not just rankings. Vandy is a great school but doesn’t have the academic hurdles that GT has.

Kilroydawg…. Your post wasn’t offensive just typical. Most UGA fans dumb down their expectations or manipulate the numbers to feel good about the direction of the program. The truth is cold and many don’t won’t to hear it. UGA should be competing for the SEC and national championships every year. The ingredients have always been there (HS talent, rich tradition,$$$ support, facilities) but as long as you and other dawg fans are happy with an eastern division banner and an out back bowl loss to basketball schools nothing will change. BTW I believe Bama’s football grad rate is bette than that of UGA in the past 4 years and we all know the arrests are not comparable. That’s why many parents are proud to send their kids to be coached by Nick Saban… that and the championships.

How many SEC championships does bama have in that time frame? Just 1? Oh ok.. everyone here knows that BCS championship bids have become a popularity contest driven by ESPN, where SEC Championships are battled out on the field. Thats why it’s now widely called the “Mythical National Championship.” I think there’s a reason the BCS championship game had lower TV ratings than the SEC Championship game… But, congrats on the BCS trophy anyway. It wouldn’t suprise me if the graduation rates are high at Bama–Saban just takes the tutors away from the kids that he doesn’t need anymore–Then he doesn’t have to pull any Medical hardship chicanery to run them off!!
As far as the arrests go…I heard Tuscaloosa police have to check with Saban before they take anybody to jail. I don’t think the A/CC PD even gets free tickets from UGA anymore. (That was a good idea Adams) So one school, the one with very few arrests, owns the local police while the other school, the one with a bunch of arrests, has pushed the local police away.
