Will RB Mike Davis still visit UGA and Clemson?

Should Spurrier be worried about Mike Davis? (AP)

Should Spurrier be worried about Mike Davis? (AP)

This could get interesting.

Tennessee and Clemson are still heavily recruiting RB Mike Davis, who committed to South Carolina last Friday.

Also, the 5-foot-9, 200-pounder from Stephenson High School said he hasn’t made a final decision on if he’ll still take this weekend’s official visit to UGA.

“I don’t know about that; I should know sometime on Thursday,” Davis said. “I haven’t talked to Georgia since the day before I committed.”

On while we were on the topic of UGA: Davis said the timing of last Friday’s commitment to South Carolina had nothing to do with RB Todd Gurley committing the UGA earlier the same day. “I knew a week before that Gurley was going to Georgia. That didn’t really affect my decision at all.”

Fast forward to this week: Davis allowed Tennessee to make an in-home visit a couple of nights ago. “They’re trying to get me to change my mind. They know I’m committed but reminded me that nothing’s  official until you sign the papers.”

Mike will sign on Feb. 1 with?

Then there’s Clemson: The Tigers called the other day, and there’s an ever-present fear among South Carolina fans that Davis could flip to the Tigers at any moment. After all, his older brother, James Davis, was an All-ACC RB at Clemson.

Davis is scheduled to visit Clemson on Jan. 27, and his older brother has let everybody know about it, even saying Mike was a “soft” commitment to South Carolina on Twitter.

“I don’t know if I’m going to Clemson yet and please don’t pay attention to what he says,” Davis said.

Some have speculated that Davis has never really considered Clemson because he didn’t want to follow in his brother’s footsteps. “That didn’t have anything to do with me and Clemson. They just came on late with me.”

So where does everything stand with Davis? “I’m committed to South Carolina. I’m 100-percent committed. I don’t know if I’ll go on these last two visits. If I do, it will be because I told those coaches that I would. But I just don’t know right now.”

He is just taking the visit because he has some left. He is a lock with sc. He wouldn’t have committed if he didn’t want to go. He won’t go to ga because were set

We have Crowell, Marshall, Gurley, Samuels and Horton and one other – two of those guys are # 1 picks and Gurley may be better than both of them before it is all over. We don’t need Davis – good luck to him. He wants to go to SC – bully for him. What we need is linemen….good linemen. We have the skill players we need.

This guy doesn’t know the meaning of the word “commitment”. Now that we have Marshall and Gurley, I really don’t care where he goes, truth be told. If that sounds smug, so be it.

I would love to have Davis at Ga, but at this point he would be better off at a school with less RB depth. Ga is already loaded, and another RB may be too much of a good thing.

Looks like it will be Clemson in the end.

The only thing that is a lock is death and taxes. This kid is all about himself and getting a lot of chirping in his ear from big brother. His brother is the reason he decommitted from UF after being in the fold so to speak for almost a year. He is enjoying all the attention and playing the game. Dont be shocked SC if he flips on NSD, by the same token don’t be surprised if he stays. But where ever he lands if he is not the center of attention he will transfer after one year. He is of the ME generation.

Kid has some strange ideas about being committed, he was committed to UF and that didn’t mean too much to him and SC fans need to be concerned about it. With some of the things he has pulled I wouldn’t be shocked if this wasn’t a plan to embarassass SC by switiching to CU on signing day.

Mr. Davis we would love to have you at UGA! If not UGA consider staying in the state you were raised and play for Tech. Spurrier is about one notch above Saban regarding integrity and you better make sure you can trust him.

Will Davis hold a formal presser to make his announcement between UGA and USC? If so, will he take questions from the media about his choice and use the hats on the table to make the announcement? Hopefully, it will be televised and streamed.

I am for Mike Davis. He has been far more forthright about recruiting than many of the college head coaches he has had to deal with. I am a big Dawg Fan and would love his talent in Athens, but I think you all are way off base when you imply “we don’t need him”. Wow. We thought we needed him last week before we had Gurley. Come on Dawg fans we are better than bad mouthing an 18 year over his choice of college.

Good luck to you at SC Mr. Davis, and I would love to have had you in Athens, but I understand your decision. I would probably good for more playing time also.

I’d love for him to stay with USC, as he would round out a backfield that’s loaded with Lattimore, Miles, Wilds, and Carson. But if he does choose to change, that’s his decision. 18 year old guys change their mind all the time. Wherever he ends up, hopefully with Carolina, I wish him the best.

To the poster saying Spurrier has no integrity, I simply laugh. It’s understandable for UGA fans to hate the man, but don’t go spreading lies about him.

Mike Davis is going to kick UGA’s butt for the Gamecocks, the same way Cam Newton did for Auburn. To allow this kid to sign with an SEC East rival is inexcusable. What does it take to get fired at Georgia? They act like the 2nd half of the LSU game, and the Mich St. debacle don’t count. The place is worse than the Federal Government. Come to think of it FNMA (Fannie Mae) rhymes with UGA. 31 years and counting.

Moobs Johnson, funny how you speak of what you dont know. Stephenson has had many succesful players play college football and finish there careers and are doing well in life, me being one. The ignorance of some of you people is sad at best. You all speak as though you know these kids personally. You all dont know what his brother said to him because you know neither of them. And if you have never been through the recruiting process before, then you have no idea as to how it is or how it works. There is nothing wrong with taking visits to see other parts of the country on the expense of the universities. If they still want you to come, take it. And as far as Stephenson college busts, there are few, very few. Kelvin Sheppard is a starter for the Buffalo Bills, Perry Riley is a starter for the Redskins, Jermaine Cunningham started for the patriots before his injury this year, Kregg Lumpkin played heavily for the Bucs this year, and we have a number of players in Canada, Byron Parker, Sean Lucas, Athnony Cannon just to name a few. We also have teachers, engineers, and lawyers who have came along and played ball at Stephenson and in College. And before any of you bring up Reggie Ball, yes he may have made some bad plays on the field, but he never did anything off the field as far as getting in trouble and casting Georgia Tech in a bad light. If anything he and Calvin Johnson brought some excitement back to GT football. Some of you guys need to get a life and stop living yours bashing teenage kids for decisions that will affect their lives and not yours.

I feel like people are putting words in his mouth a lot. Lots of stories about nothing going around with Mike. All I’ve ever seen is: “I’m 100% committed, If I take visits its only because I’m keeping my word, and don’t listen to James.” I don’t feel like he’s a soft commitment, I just think everyone is making a story where there apparently isn’t one.

Honestly, I think UGA is set at RB now. Getting Mike Davis would be nice, but I’d also be concerned about next year. As of right now, we have a 6′3″ 225 lb beast coming in (Henry). He committed this season when there was no RB depth at UGA. Now, there will be considerable depth. Getting Davis could (understandably) be a deal breaker for Henry next season. While most of these recruits have a competitive nature, the reality is that log jams (of young guys) at a position is far from ideal. MOST teams aren’t able to rotate 4 RBs the way LSU did last year. In the past, when UGA had the three-headed monster (Ware, Lumpkin, and Brown), at least one of them never got a meaningful amount of carries in a given game. MOREOVER, Moreno took a redshirt, which–in hindsight–proved to be a very bad decision. We only got 2 yrs out of Moreno b/c he took a redshirt; had he not been redshirted, UGA would have gotten 3 yrs. W/ Gurley and Marshall, our RB problems are solved, and Henry will still be on board to solidy the position for future seasons. As for Davis’s best interests, S. Car. looks to be a great fit for him. Lattimore will be a junior, likely declaring after next season. Then, Davis will be the man. Moreover, Lattimore gets so many carries, that there is always going to be a very real possibility of injury. So, Davis will get a lot of meaningful carries and will likely get an opportunity to start a game or two this coming season w/ the gamecocks.

Also, w/ Davis, there are some red flags that he could be an energy vampire. I think this perception has likely been unfairly fueled by the media. Still, though, at best, he’s an unknown commodity. There are SOME reasons to think he could negatively affect locker room chemistry at UGA; conversely, all signs indicate that both Marshall and Gurley are stand-up guys, team players, and super-competitive. Immense talent, serious attention to academics, and selfless.

We may need to sign about five more RBs to make sure we have enough who are healthy and not suspended. I’m not worried about defense and our special teams has nowhere to go but up from the dismal performance this year compared to the pre-season expectations.

What worries me is the O-line and the continued ability of Murray to grasp defeat out of the jaws of victory on the big games. While our schedule eased up considerably after the SC game, playing high school teams did not get Murray battle tested and it showed in the LSU and MSU games. When he has plenty (emphasis on “plenty”) of time to throw then he’s fine but the moment he hears feetsteps then he’s about as dependable as Courtney Love saying she’s going to an AA meeting on a Saturday night.

Prove me wrong, but I forsee our D putting us in the Dome in December only to have our inexperienced O leave with another loss. And the year after that when our offense has some experience under their belts then our D will be depleted from graduation and early retirement.

Also, why is it taking so long to make the right move on the offensive coaching?? Richt was about 2 years late in replacing the DC and we’re heading into about year 4 of waiting too long to replace Bobo. It’s times like this that I’m sorry I stopped sniffing glue (gratuitous “Airplane” quote)!

As bad as I would like for Mike Davis to sign with uga, he need to stay committed to SC or go to tech because @uga there will eventually be a rb controversy. Its just a matter of time when hell breaks loose there.

UGA do not run the ball as much as LSU and that means that there will not be enough carries to go around to make 6 rbs happy. If 5 star Derrick Henry stays committed, it will be even more crowded there.
