G’Day Mate: Georgia Tech welcomes football recruit from Australia

Georgia Tech already has a member of its recruiting class from England.

They may be adding one from Australia this weekend.

Adam Gotsis is 6-foot-4, 290-pound lineman from Australia. According to his Facebook page, Gotsis began the long journey on Wednesday for this weekend’s official visit. According to Jacketsonline.com, he as both been offered a football scholarship and “”If things go well on the visit I will commit to Georgia Tech to play football.”

We’re still researching more information, but in the meantime here’s a post from the Australian website BringInSports.com.au:

Bring It On Sports are happy to announce that Adam Gotsis from Melbourne, Australia, is being recruited by Georgia Tech to play Gridiron. Adam and his parents will be leaving Australia on Thursday the 19th of January on an Official visit to Georgia Tech Campus, which is located in Atlanta. Georgia Tech will be paying for Adam’s Flights as well as his accommodation and Meals. Adam and his parents will meet with the Coaching Staff of Georgia Tech and will also tour the facilities. This is a great opportunity for Adam to Play Gridiron at a High level as well as get a Quality Education and have a potential chance to go to the NFL. Adam represented the Australian National Team at the 2011 IFAF World Cup of American Football. Bring It On Sports Director Paul Manera, a former University Of Hawaii Gridiron Player, was recruited by Georgia Tech Head Coach Paul Johnson to play at Hawaii when he was the Offensive Coordinator at Hawaii in 1988. Both Paul Johnson and Offensive Line Coach Mike Sewak are very impressed with Adams ability and size and they were able to scout Adam’s Highlight film of him playing for Australia as well as some footwork drills and skills that we put him through. This is not only great news for Adam but also for other hopeful Aussies that want to play College and NFL Gridiron in the USA. Georgia Tech has now made a committment to come down to Australia to recruit, and other universities, such as The University Of Hawaii, are already recruiting here; and Oregon State is also showing interest in coming down to Australia. Success breeds success in the last 5 Years; There have been 4 Lineman from Australia who have received full scholarships to play Division 1 College Football. We are confident that Adam Gotsis will be the next….. Signing Day for scholarships is the 1st of February ……….

This is the funniest thing I’ve read ALL WEEK. Georgia Tech better hope that South Alabama, Elon, Middle Tennessee State and Wofford don’t try to kidnap him at Hartsfield.

It’s nice to see the coaches thinking out of the box when it comes to recruiting. I am perfectly fine snatching all of the international players. Some of these guys will be studs.

This should be a lock. I love that CPJ is getting creative with his recruiting. Every tech fan knows that we can’t compete with the SEC schools that we’re in the middle of for the best recruits. Going international for players is one way we can get the talent, we just might have to develop it. While GT doesn’t hold much over UGA in the state of GA, internationally GT is highly regarded while no one has ever heard of the dawgs…

GTJason, there is more truth to what you said about Tech being known internationally than what you realize. I was on a tour in Turkey last summer, and was talking about basketball with my Turkish tour guide. When I told him that I had gone to Georgia Tech, he said, “oh yes, the Yellow Jackets.” He had seen quite a few Tech basketball games on TV in Turkey when he was a kid. Not football related, but Georgia Tech has been in the news internationally, too. In fact, Vice President Richard Nixon and Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev sang the song together during a summit in Moscow back in 1958. Nixon suggested singing a song to ease the tension in the room. Khrushchev had heard “I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck” on an Ed Sullivan sing-a-long during a previous trip to the United States, and since Nixon knew no Russian songs, “I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck” was sung by default.

The AJC Site for Jacket Fans has become a complete joke.
A normal narrative among Tech Fans can no longer be had here due to the jealousy of what seems to be every college program in the nation.
If I check the UGA blog right now, I will not see any Tech fans bashing any UGA fan nor any UGA recruit.
Are all UGA fans poor pathetic wastes of humanity like the wee little men that come here and hide behind their keyboards?
I really don’t get what losers you are hanging around pestering Tech fans on this site.
You have owned us in football for the last 10 years, so what makes this site so interesting that you just can’t seem to get enough of it??? Good luck on the Aussie recruit, although this is not what GT needs. Majority of recruits live in or around ATL…need to reestablish their relationship with those schools. No reason they should be pulling more studs in the local area with all the playing time available at Tech.

We, Dawgs, have our issues with our program just like Tech dones. Both mediocre at best right now. Will have some big wins, and some ugly losses. UGA problem is handcuffing the talent we recruit each year. Inconsistent yearly recruiting at certain key positions, ie. Oline. And an old fashioned playbook and offensive philosophy. And I hate to admit, some stubbornness at two key coaching positions. But things could be worse, it’s all fixable. Just depends how hot the fire is underneath a few of those seats.

The Tech student is 5-8 145 to 6-0 180 and that does not a football team make. It is too COOL to DUMB DOWN in our current educational system. Whether you believe it is an impediment or not to kids coming to Tech, recruiters from other schools have been able to convince many prospective Tech signees that it is.

That’s okay, Ghost, Fred Horton and Isaah Johnson weren’t highly recruited and they’ve proved to be quite capable players for the Jackets as well. I think there are several receivers and running backs who will attest that they are qualified to play at this level, and I suspect Lynn will as well.

Hey 5150, How ’bout sharing your knowledge with Super. He constantly states that GT does not offer Liberal Arts. And that when faced with it he brings up the Calc I and Calc II for freshmen. GT does offer liberal arts through the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts AND the freshemen can take Survey of Calculus followed by finite math. I’m not saying this is easy, because it is not. The degrees from I A College of Liberal Arts are extremely prestigious. But it is Liberal Arts without the Engineering grade calculus. That’s my point.

GT technically doesn’t have any Liberal Arts degrees. Every Bachelors and Masters degree at GT is a Science degree. Meaning you have to take the Calculus courses or the equivalent courses for non engineers. You also have to take a semester of Computer Science, and two semesters of Lab Science (no easy choice here). Just because the focus of study for the major is a traditional Liberal Arts subject doesn’t mean it’s a Liberal Arts degree.

Okie, I don’t believe I ever said that Tech does not offer liberal arts in the curriculum; if I did, then I was obviously incorrect. What I BELIEVE I said was that Tech is not a liberal arts university. Even when I was in school way back when, it was possible to use a degree from Tech to get into medical school (not pre-med specifically, but it served the same purpose). So yes, there are liberal arts at Tech; in a sense, even architecture could be considered a liberal art. But Tech still remains an engineering and science INSTITUTE, NOT a UNIVERSITY. The name “Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts is a relatively new name change, and some of the programs offered in that college are VERY NEW. As far as what kind of calculus the I A College students take, when I was in school ALL students took one year of calculus, and it was the same course for everyone. Whether that has been changed in recent years, honestly I do not know. Regardless of whether it is the same calculus the engineers take or a survey or whatever, it is still more than any university (including VT) requires their non-engineering students to take.

The State of Ga. is #3 in the USA if you look at numbers of 4* Recruits and higher, yet Coach Kung Fu Panda chooses to go all the way to friggin’ AUSTRALIA for a Recruit that played against much LESSER competition than what our own home-grown recruits here in Ga. play against.

Our Recruits do NOT major in Engineering for the most part, in most cases our FB Recruits major in either Business Admin or Economics.

GT Fans need to get over themselves, it ain’t that hard to fill a Roster of good players that can also major in Business Admin.

We lost guys like Ray Drew, Chris Conley, Justin Scott-Wesley, Sterling Bailey and others to UGA and we have lost guys like Tuitt to ND and Vaughters to Stanford.

If you look at the ACADEMIC QUALIFIERS that we have lost to other schools just during the CPJ-Era, we could easily have a string of Top-15 Recruiting classes and a much better FB program.

GT is losing these Academic Qualifiers for FB-RELATED REASONS, not because of our “elite Academics”; the Academics Excuse is a handy CRUTCH that the GT fanbase like to use, but Academics ain’t GT’s Problem.

Of the Top-100 Recruits in Ga., roughly 65-70 are full Academic Qualifiers for GT’s FB program.

If you look at UGA’s “dream team” Recruiting class from last year, GT offered 12-15 of those guys.

Of the Top-7 RBs in Ga. this year, all were ACADEMIC QUALIFIERS for GT, but GT & CPJ whiffed on all of the Top-7 RBs in Ga. for 2012, so instead we had to resort to recruiting an OLB from Florida (M. Allen) to play B-Back when all the other HCs Recruiting him had him projected as an OLB .

GT’s FOOTBALL-RELATED issues are the problem with GT’s FB program, but since the School & fanbase has been in DENIAL for the better part of 50 years, they instead take the easy way out and Blame everything on GT’s “Elite Academics”.

GT can field a pretty damn good FB team made up of BUSINESS ADMIN Majors if they really wanted to.

To play “devil’s advocate”, could you please tell me WHY the AAU Ranking should mean anything to me, and I’m a GT Alum BTW?

WHY should I trust that organization (AAU) and their ranking when GT fans are always telling me that those “outside” orgs. that do such rankings don’t know what the hell they are talking about.

You want me to TRUST the AAU and their ranking, but at the same time I’m supposed to DISMISS the Rankings of Rivals, Scout .com, ESPN150 and other 3rd party orgs. that actually put a lot into their evaluation process and actually see many of the top players up close and do evaluate a lot of film on BCS-level Recruits.

Seems to me like my fellow Alums are in denial and are huge hypocrites, orgs. like the AAU visit a college for maybe 1-week and then send a questionnaire that the school answers on the “Honor System” and because GT fares WELL they accept those rankings, but when GT doesn’t fare well in Rankings, such as Recruiting Rankings for CFB, then GT Fans don’t think the Ranking are worth a crap.

Which way do you want it GT fans?

If Rankings are worth a crap then WE ALL NEED to accept the Recruiting Rankings as well as our Academic Rankings in US News, Business Week, AAU, etc.

Australians are the sleeping giants of College football and the NFL. Look at this year – Brad Wing LSU (Australian and a starter) Jesse Williams Alabama DT (Australian and a starter) Do we want to look at the NFL kickers? Darren Bennett (Pro Bowl – Australian) Ben Graham (Cardinals), Sav Rocca (Redskins), Matt McBriar (Patriots) with more coming. OK, most of them are Punters but you cannot deny that based on results the talent pool is there and is largely untapped, in a sport where results are everything why the heck not?
