Josh Harvey-Clemons’ grandpa predicting “photo finish between Florida and UGA”

Josh Harvey-Clemons still has two official visits left, but his grandfather is predicting “a photo finish” between UGA and Florida.

Harvey-Clemons is a 6-foot-5, 200-pound linebacker from Lowndes High School who may be the state’s top uncommitted prospect. He made an unofficial visit to UGA over the weekend.

“It’s going to be a photo finish between Florida and Georgia, as I told Coach Bobo before we left,” said Harvey-Clemons’ grandfather, Woodrow Clemons, told the AJC.

“The visit to Georgia went well, really well. They wanted a commitment for us before we left. And we stood firm. We’re not going to commit until Feb. 1.”

"Photo finish" between Florida and UGA on Feb. 1 predicted for AJC Super 11 LB Josh Harvey-Clemons of Lowndes HS (AJC)

"Photo finish" predicted between Florida and UGA on Feb. 1 for AJC Super 11 LB Josh Harvey-Clemons of Lowndes HS (AJC)

That’s because JHC has two official visits remaining: to Florida State on Jan. 20 and Louisville on Jan. 27. This weekend’s  trip to UGA was his first since traveling to Florida last month.

Harvey-Clemons has said repeatedly that UGA and Florida are his co-leaders.

“I’d probably rate the Georgia visit as an 8,” his grandfather said. “They showed us a good time and did an excellent job of presenting what they had to offer.”

What about the Florida visit? “I would give them about an 8, too. Academically, they both have similar programs. There’s nothing distinctly different about Florida and Georgia at this point. I think Josh’s decision will boil down to the sincerity of the coaches and the opportunity he will have to play once his gets there.”

Since the death of Josh’s parents, his grandfather has raised him as his own. Here were some other comments from his grandfather on the UGA visit:

  • On Mark Richt: “He’s always been a nice guy. He’s a gentlemen and a scholar. He went through some turbulent times but someone pulled his coat tail and he’s got things on the right track now.”
  • On Todd Grantham: “The record speaks for itself.  He turned that defense around. It was my third or fourth time meeting him. He has a lot of football knowledge, and he has that connection to the NFL.”
  • On UGA’s sales pitch: “Coach Richt and Coach Grantham said the same things: They need Josh in the ‘Sam’ linebacker position. With his frame and his speed, he’s the perfect fit for that scheme. They said he could go to the next level at that position. And they said he could come to Georgia and compete for playing time as a freshman.”
  • On what he learned the most on the visit: “I like Georgia’s tutoring program, where they have to be there at 7 o’clock in the morning. If they miss too many, they will suspend them for a game. There’s tutoring sessions in the morning and afternoon. They start the day off right, bright and early. I like that. I think that’s great. Then they have a mentoring program which is really pushing kids in the right direction for life after football.”
Henry Co. DT Dalvin Tomlinson, another one of the state's top uncommitted prospects, is scheduled to visit UGA on Monday (AJC)

Henry Co. DT Dalvin Tomlinson, another one of the state's top uncommitted prospects, is scheduled to visit UGA on Monday (AJC)

Note: Harvey-Clemons and Henry County DT Dalvin Tomlinson are considered to be the state’s top uncommitted prospects. Georgia Tech is rumored to have inside position on Tomlinson, who is scheduled to make a rare midweek visit to UGA on Monday.

It would be very interesting if this Lowndes fellow, Harvey-Clemons, could play safety in the SEC…At six ft five, that would speocial.

You can tell by his words. UGA has no chance at this kid. Although UF does already have two highly rated LB’’s in their class and he may not want the competition.

If you want to play in the NFL, why wouldn’t you want to play for Grantham? If you didn’t have the talent to go pro—then even more—-why wouldn’t you want a chance to play under Grantham. Erk Russell would have loved this guy. He a player’s type of coach. I’d go through a wall for this guy.

SlawDWAG you must not have watched the Outback Bowl if you don’t know that UGa fans spell DOG as Dwag on their signs at the game. With maybe 1/5th of the talent. If Richt ever has to coach at a school that doesn’t just feed him great recruiting classes then he probably would struggle to make a bowl game.

If Richt became the head coach of GT tomorrow we would not make a bowl game the entire time he is a coach. The guy went from being loaded with talent at FSU to being loaded with talent at UGA. He would have no idea what to do if he actually had to coach.

SlawDawg Richt wouldn’t be getting the same recruits if he were at an ACC school. I though you got that rub. Richt is getting better talent than most is the SEC but he can’t bring home a BCS MNC. He would be getting on average the same talent relative to the ACC and not be doing any better. He does Less with MORE in the SEC he would do the same in the ACC.

I’m impressed at the grandfather. To lose your parents at such an early age must be so flipping tough for this young man – I’m 35 and 3 of my 4 grandparents have passed, and the other has alzheimers. Grandparents are treasures and it sounds like JHC has a great one. I really hope he comes to UGA as a fan, but I’m now rooting for the kid regardless of his choice.
Looking at the Depth chart – the “Sam” spot looks wide open for him in 2013 – he gets to understudy with Ogletree and Jarvis – who will both be preseason all-americans. Freshman year is all about adjusting to college and having the right peers mentoring you. I can’t imagine a better mentor than Jarvis Jones – just look at his attitude about life and about being a Dawg.
Jarvis will take him under his wing in 2012 and prepare him to absolutely fly in 2013. Seems like a really, really good development opportunity for Josh to play a little early, learn the system without too much pressure – and then hit the gas his Sophomore year.

I like this kid and I like the grandfather. My brother is 6′5″ and 200, and a man that size can raise some hell. Good luck kid – I hope you choose the Classic City over Gainsville for the next 3-5 years of your life.
