James Franklin vs. Todd Grantham, Round 2?

Vanderbilt’s head coach and UGA’s defensive coordinator are going head-to-head in a recruiting battle over one of the state’s top prospects, Tucker High School defensive end Josh Dawson.

If you remember, Franklin and Grantham got into a heated confrontation after this season’s Vanderbilt-Georgia game.

Back to Dawson: The 6-foot-5, 229-pounder has been committed to Vanderbilt since last summer. This weekend, Dawson took an official visit to UGA. Technically, the Georgia assistant in charge of recruiting Dawson is Rodney Garner but Grantham has gotten heavily involved within the last few weeks.

“I guess it’s because Coach Grantham would be my position coach at Georgia,” Dawson told the AJC. “I didn’t really talk to [Grantham] that much until the last few weeks. Now we talk a lot. He’s a pretty cool guy. He’s very passionate with the way he coaches. It seems to bring out the best in his players. I don’t have any problems with it.  I’m just waiting to see which way I go with [my recruiting].”

Ironically, Dawson was at the Vanderbilt-Georgia game and on the home sidelines at the end. However, he didn’t see the confrontation. “I wasn’t close enough to see everything that went on.” But he did see the replays. His thoughts? “Football  is an emotional game. I just think both teams wanted to win very badly. Personally, I didn’t have any problems with it:”

During his official visit to UGA, Dawson sat in the film room with Grantham. “He showed me some clips and told me about all of the guys he put in the league [NFL]. He wants me at outside linebacker, at the Sam or Will. I will be rushing the passer from defensive end, and I might put my hand in the dirt sometimes. Most of the time, I will be standing up in the base defense. Overall, Coach Grantham said he would move me around a lot.”

Grantham is Georgia’s “hottest recruiter” after swinging 5-star DE Jordan Jenkins from Alabama last week. Will Jenkins’ decision affect how Dawson feels about UGA? “No sir. I just feel like with any big-time program you go to, there’s always going to be talent there. It shouldn’t affect your decision because you should want to play with the best talent. That’s only going to make you better.”

So is Dawson still committed to Vanderbilt? Is he considering flipping to Georgia? Which school is leading? “I’m still committed to Vanderbilt,” Dawson said. “They’ve shown me a lot of love for a long time, and that’s why I committed there. Vanderbilt is ahead and … I don’t know … what else to say. I’m leaving everything out on the table for now. I will take my visit to Vanderbilt next weekend and see how things go.”

“If I have to make a change, which I don’t yet, it will probably be before signing day. I need to visit Vanderbilt next weekend and make sure I’m making the right decision.”

Dawson said both Vanderbilt and UGA are tentatively scheduled to make in-home visits this week, while Mark Richt will probably come to his house next week. Dawson said he is also considering a midweek visit to South Carolina.

Here’s a quote from Dawson:

“I really saw it is like a family at Georgia too. The players are very close, the coaches have a great relationship with the players, and it was cool to be around all of them. All of my questions were answered in a good way.”

More from the Vandy commit:

“Georgia is a very good school and they have been recruiting me for a long time. I had a very good time this weekend and made a good impression on me.

“I just want to take my time and see how things unfold. If I need to make a change, then I will do that when I feel it is the right time.”

Come to UGA, Josh! Think about it; playing for an SEC Championship and a real chance at a National Championship with your talent and ability is what you’ve worked so hard for. Stay home and play for a great coach and a great state! Go DAWGS!

More:

Rodney Garner is Dawson’s recruiting coach and Todd Grantham broke film down for him, and both coaches made good impressions on the 6-foot-4, 220 pound athlete out of Tucker, Ga.

Head Coach Mark Richt impressed him as well.

“I had a very good conversation with Coach Richt. We talked about some football, we talked about Georgia being the home-state school, we talked about life in general, and we had a good talk.

“I really like Coach Richt, who he is, and what he is about. He is an easy guy to talk and I like that. We talked about a lot of simple things and it was cool.”

METRO ATLANTA Recruit, has the Academics for Vandy, good measurables out of HS, 6-5 230 OLB type, and yet Coach Kung Fu Panda is nowhere to be found among his finalists.

Then, whenever GT has trouble getting Recruits, they disparage the Recruits by saying they want “easy Academics and don’t want to work hard in the classroom for 3 yrs.+ before they try the NFL”.

GT Fans need to cease with the tired, cliche’d excuses for GT’s poor and LAZY Recruiting efforts.

There are plenty of LOCAL METRO ATLANTA Recruits that are FULL ACADEMIC QUALIFIERS for GT that opt instead to play in the SEC or instead play for UGA.

If GT could just Recruit BETTER among the METRO ATLANTA Recruits that are full Academic Qualifiers, then GT could be a 10-win Team in the ACC and they could play a tougher OOC Schedule that would make the fanbase happy.

But rather than work harder at Recruiting GT and its fans would rather bad-mouth teenagers calling them lazy and scared of tough Academics.

One day we’ll get a Prez/AD/HC that knows how to get things done within the “framework” of GT and keep more of these great Metro Atlanta Recruits at home playing for GT.

Better get some guys like this to flip. Dawgs have a pretty good class so far, but the numbers aren’t there yet….with 2 weeks to go, Dawgs have 7 or 8 spots left, and most of the “headline” guys are gone. There are some good ball players out there that don’t get the ink, but getting Josh would be a steal, no pun intended. Not a lot of leaks as to who the Dawgs are looking at. Maybe we get 1 or 2 more to flip after Josh.
