Todd Gurley: Analysis of new UGA RB recruit and other notebook items

Follow-up on 4-star RB Todd Gurley committing to UGA and other random items:

  • In case you missed it on late Friday night, another UGA RB target committed to South Carolina. Click here to read the full story. Did Gurley committing to UGA affect how RB Mike Davis was considering the Bulldogs? He said “no.” Maybe, maybe not, but I say likely.  Did UGA still want Davis after landing Gurley? On the surface, it seems like UGA only wanted to take two RBs in this class, and Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley filled that void. However, this is a very unusual year for UGA from the standpoint of having so many scholarships open (between 8-10) this late, around two weeks before National Signing Day. At this point, many colleges start simply taking the best overall athlete left on the board, Had Davis really wanted to go to UGA, my guess is that they would’ve found a spot for him.
  • Does anybody remember another highly-touted RB that UGA signed out of North Carolina years ago? I think the guy’s name was … Tim Worley.
  • UGA RB recruit Todd Gurley (Photo courtesy of 247Sports.com)

  • Who is better? Keith Marshall or Todd Gurley? That was an easy answer a couple of months ago, but not so much after Gurley’s stock skyrocketed after leading his team to the state championship while playing with a high-ankle sprain. Here’s what Mike Farrell of Rivals said on Twitter on Friday: “I’ll say it right here and now, Todd Gurley is better than Keith Marshall and both are very, very good.” Rusty Mansell of 247Sports on which RB is better. “I’ve seen Keith Marshall play, and Keith Marshall is faster. Todd Gurley is fast, too, but more of a guy who pounds it between the tackles. If they wind up being in the backfield at the same time next year, Georgia will have a guy that can get the edge and a guy who can run effectively between the tackles. At the end of the day, Georgia got immediate running back depth, and that’s what they were looking for.”
  • How is Clemson feeling these days? They finished as a very close runner-up to UGA for both Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley. That’s not to say another RB who the Tigers sign won’t be better. You never know in recruiting. However, on the surface, those are some mighty big and highly-publicized recruiting battles won by the Bulldogs in the Carolinas. If you’re a Clemson fan, I guess you could spin it and say the Tigers fared better in the two sweepstakes than the home state schools – North Carolina, NC State, Duke and Wake Forest. That gang may need to hire Lane Kiffin for some fence-building skills. Back to Clemson: They also missed on Mike Davis, whose older brother played for the Tigers. Not to keep beating up on Clemson, but they are also pitching a shutout for the entire state of Georgia in recruiting this year. Remember when you could count on Clemson getting a couple of Georgia’s best each year?
Vanderbilt DE commit Josh Dawson is visiting UGA this weekend

Vanderbilt DE commit Josh Dawson is visiting UGA this weekend

  • What is UGA serving in the student cafeteria these days? Does anybody know what’s on the menu? Gurley cited on several occasions that the food at Georgia factored into this decision to go with Bulldogs. We think he was joking.
  • UGA must certainly be hoping that this weekend’s recruits on official visits enjoy the food. The guests include two already pledged to the Bulldogs, Thomson DT John John Atkins and Colquitt County TE Ty Smith. There’s also Lowndes S-LB Josh Harvey-Clemons, who is favoring the Bulldogs and Florida, and Tucker DE Josh Dawson, who is committed to Vanderbilt.
  • ESPN’s Kipp Adams on Gurley: “At 6-foot-1 and 215-pounds, Todd Gurley definitely has the size you look for in an SEC running back. People talk about how many running backs Georgia will have now, but when you look at what LSU did in the SEC Championship game with Alfred Blue, Kenny Hilliard and Michael Ford, you would like to have three 200+ pound tailbacks to be able to wear down these defenses in the second half … Gurley is not just some big plodder either. On film, he is surprisingly agile for his size, and if he gets a good angle has home-run threat potential because of his north-south speed. I was impressed with his durability this year, with him having over 200 carries and playing through an ankle injury in the state championship game. … Some people have looked at Musa Smith as a running back comparison, and while he was before my time as a prospect (actually only one year younger than I am), the size and speed combination appear very similar at the same stage.”
  • Here’s video of Todd Gurley announcing UGA on Friday. Click here to see it.

Mark Richt: Ask for it and you shall receive it ... UGA RB recruits Todd Gurley (No. 1) and Keith Marshall

Mark Richt: Ask for it and you shall receive it ... UGA RB recruits Todd Gurley (No. 1) and Keith Marshall

  • After landing Marshall and Gurley, I guess you can say that Mark Richt’s bold recruiting strategy worked. He was so desperate for running backs that he went public with his plea to reporters a couple of months ago (he avoided NCAA violations by not mentioning specific recruits): “There’s a tremendous opportunity at the University of Georgia for running backs in this class to come to Georgia and make a big impact,” Richt said. “I hope that’s not breaking a rule, but there’s tremendous opportunity, I can say that. If I was a running back, if I was a great running back, I would want to come to Georgia. I would be so excited about my opportunity at Georgia.” A risky tactic by the conservative Richt but it seemed to work to perfection.
  • If you a Georgia fan, do you feel much better about this recruiting class than you did only a week ago? Most do. Gurley was more or less expected, while many are still shocked about 5-star DE Jordan Jenkins swinging to the Bulldogs over longtime leader Alabama last Monday. The 6-foot-3, 250-pounder is considered to be the state’s No. 1 overall prospect.
  • Over at archrival Georgia Tech, the Yellow Jackets have their biggest recruiting weekend of the year, including 8 of 14 commits (click on story link).

3rd year in with CTD and his 3-4 defense, its seems to be getting better each year and the players are really buying into it and their confidence is skyrocking. I agree with RRTDawgs, the O-line and added depth on defense will be a big plus this year. Big things are coming our way in 2012

I think Curley will end up being the much better back at Georgia over both Crowell and Marshall. He certainly is more of the type running back you need to win in the SEC. Georgia is again coming on strong in recruiting. I think Georgia will get a commitment from Harvey-Clemons this weekend as well.

P.S. Crowell might be thinking about a South Alabama transfer right about now…..or just got back from the gym after sprinting at the track after studying for 10 hours….and saying yes sir/mam and no sir/mam to every adult in Athens who walks by…..with a big ole smile on his face and wearing his cap like a baseball player……and planning to go to church with Richt on Sunday.

……also…..Richt’s fundamental religion is connecting with a lot of the families of these recruits. It is obvious. Maybe all SEC coaches should get dunked in the river and start singing “praise the Lord” on recruiting visits.

Bottom line: Richt and Co. have got to capitalize on this collection of talent with at least 1 appearance in the title game. There can be no excuses. The one major problem I see is the O-line. Georgia has simply recruited too many low rated players there the past 5 years. Just go back and check. I know “stars” and “rankings” of recruits is just a tool, not the end all be all. But just compare those offensive line recruits ratings to their performance on campus. In my opinion, Georgia needs to recruit more elite talent on the O-line.

Folks need to stop knocking BoBo. He is running Richt’s offense and this is the only offense both have ever run in their entire careers, except when BoBo played. We already know we can’t separate one from the other. You just have to live with it. Just remember, those called plays with runs up the middle by a 180 lb. back is a part of strategy, a strategy formulated by the head coach. I’m afraid in these last 10 years, Richt has went more and more conservative in order to try and not lose games (as opposed to playing aggressive and putting the pressure on the other team). Again, we have to live with it for now. Just think if Georgia would have just kept passing the ball down the field vertically against LSU. The Honeybadger (who isn’t as good a DB as he is an overall athlete) would not have been invited to New York and UGA could have saved LSU the embarrassment.

Good SAT scores from ANY Dekalb school are dubious at best

January 14th, 2012

This IS a college format. Any kid from a Dekalb County school has very, very, very suspect SAT scores ad a supporting GPA. I know, I moved from Dunwoody HS district back in the early 90s, when they began winning basketball and football State Titles and the SAT scores dropped like a rock.

Is this why the Stephenson kid did not go with UGA? UGA is not Harvard, but 98% of most college educated adults anyway, know back in the day, we greatly elevated our standards, unlike LSU or ALbama or AUBURN or GT or Clemson or SC or UT.

UGA must sign about 85% legit students vs an Alabama or Auburn or LSU or Mich. SU or MICHIGAN or Clemson or SC……………….. there, they work the system.

Go Dogs.

Slydog..you don’t know jack. Telling us not to criticize Bobo is stupid: we won SEC championships when Richt was calling the plays…not so with BooBoo. Booboo thinks you win championships by throwing the ball on every play…not by wearing down the defense by running the ball. A lot of ifs for UGA for next season, but if Richt and Co can assemble an O-line that can open holes for these talented RBs, our offense can stop being so 1-dimensional.

It would help in tight games for Murray to stop trying to do too much. Even if our running game is just average, it would be a big help in that regard.

Dawg4

January 15th, 2012

Richt has set up the situation for another exit by running backs by not supporting what he has by his advertisement comments. These two recruits may be great but he better show some support to what he already has on the team. What ever happened to the competition before they practice as before Crowell.. Did Crowell in his mind become annointed when Richt said he may start vs Boise last year..Did Ealey act up due to that comment? Did King not bust his butt in class due to that comment…Will we lose Malcome, Thomas, or Crowell due to those type comments this year…What about Samuel? A great Dawg? Is he going to be moved again to another position before he gets a masters degree at 22 or does he have one already at 21. Unless Bobo changes the offense and has at least two backs in the backfield to run the ball there is not enough balls to go around to keep 6 no 8 running backs happy. I forgot about Harbin and Karempelis who are on scholarship. I did not forget the receivers. What do we have 15 including TE’s? The forgotten position is Fullback and Offensive line. The wheels will not turn unless the pistons are together. So he better say the same about the Offensive line. I do not thing he would lose anyone on the line due to an advertisement about come to GA if you are an offensive lineman. He is not consistant with his philosophy with different positions. I know Crowell has an attitude problem…but Richt seems to shoot himself in the foot more than occasionally by some of his comments. I hope this is not the case this time but the math seems to say watch out none of those running backs can play guard or tackle.

We have recruited four offensive linemen so far, but they are all OT’s, so I hope some where there are a few OG’s that want to play for UGA this year. I am not real sure, it works out that well, when you start moving these guys from their comfort zone, say from from OT to OG. The blocking assignments and individual strengths of each are different, so I hope we can get a couple of more folks in there so the players can play their natural position. Otherwise I see probably two of the four OT’s we recruited switching to OG, which might hurt the depth a little. We still could also use a center as well. I think we will be Ok with what we have, but it would be nice to get some more bodies there.

“If there is any type of weakness in Theus’ game at this time, it would be in his pass protection. He is solid there, but his biggest strength is run blocking right now. RedandBlackDawg, generally, in high school, you put your best offensive linemen at tackle, so it should go without saying that you would recruit tackles.

Back in the day it would be that you put your best skill player at QB, therefore Vince Dooley would recruit 4 or 5 every year and put them at other skill positions. Erk Russell made many a DE out of a QB.

Orson Charles had a no brain choice as to whether stay or go.How many big plays did he have vs Michigan State?Wake up.

“All the talk about hiring a special coach is just chatter.”
**********************************
I was thinking that everything in the “Comments” section was “chatter.”

Go ahead and think everything’s fine with special teams, while they throw away game after game.

I’m thinking somebody better pay a little more attention if we ever want to beat a good (Top 10) team again, because the STs failed in all three Top 10 games in ‘10.

But that’s just my chatter.

say what? everything is “fine”. THATS what you took from my comment? Did our “problem” and out “issues” not give you some clue that I believe it is NOT all fine? I alos suggested that we need to go back to the normal system of assigning a staff member to co-ordinate, as we had up till that guy laft last year, and it was not reasigned.

My wild guess is that knowing we had some issues, everybody was given more responsibilty (blame) rather than centalizing it. I’m better Olividatta step up to replace that “title”.

And “chatter” was not meant as some insult, relax.

My point is that out of understandable frustration to explain it, some folks are saying we need to “hire” somebody to fix the problem. I’m just pointing out that, we have a problem with numbers, and nobody is going to fix it, till we fix that problem. And if we do, we would most likely be a pretty good special teams program as has historically been the case.

Jborodawg

Right, Altamaha; schools don’t generally hire nor have a special teams coach; only allowed so many assistant coaches on the staff per the NCAA. However, some have a special teams coordinator/__other position__ coach. EG ST’s coord/receivers coach. CMR seems to have been doing it by committee. I hope he designates one coach, or appoints himself. He has said it’s a priority; so our B&Ming about it is sorta fruitless.

Joey

January 15th, 2012

So Jborodawg, you think all “schools” that don’t hire a ST Coach have the problems we have? You may should take a peek at how UGA’s STs stack up in the NCAA. Then, Richt says “it’s a priority” and that makes you happy? Good for you. By the way, Richt has already said that he (unlike Urban Myer in ‘08) would not be coaching STs.

My point (hardly B&Ming) was that Richt and Co didn’t fix the STs in 4 months in ‘11, with players at practice every day.

But, now, it’s gonna get done – by the same coach(es), with players off limits most of the time?

Well we now have the bodies at RB we need some coaching and great OL additions and then we have a great chance for a special season. CMR and company have got the foundation, however we still have to work, train, coach and hope we don’t get killed by injuries like in 08. I urge my fellow members of the Bull Dog Nation to temper expectations with remembering that most of the teams we play will be better next year, too much talent not to be, and we will be very young on the OL and that is the single biggest concern I have for next season…but we are getting close..Go Dogs

I’m having a little trouble with the recruiting rankings. For instance, Rivals and Scout have LSU #5 and #8, and UGA at #18 and #17. However, ESPN has UGA #5 and LSU #13. I just don’t get it, how they can be so disparate.

And those saying 2012 “will be special”, etc…due to our 2012 recruiting class. Don’t get too excited quite yet; we have no idea how they’ll turn out. Yep, this class does look good…on paper. But…

Correct sir. Awbun, Tenn, and Flawduh will most certainly be improved; too much talent not to be. And we saw last year how Vandy is no pushover. Actually, Vandy has given us fits on several occasions over the last 10-20 years; homecoming opponent most of the time notwithstanding. Call it a cupcake sched all you want, but it’s still an SEC sched. Heck, even Tech might be improved; we’ll see. And anybody that saw Mizzou in their bowl game should know they won’t be patsies. So, even tho we don’t play LSU nor Bama, it’s still going to be pretty challenging to win em all.

Coach Friend had to work with what he had this past year & not all the lineman performed to HIS standards. We do need to sign some more in the 2012 class for sure & we will. The cupboards are starting to fill-up again and their will be some growing “Pains” in 2012 so be patient..CF is a good O-Line coach & will get it turned around. there now that was easy wasnt it?

what i want to see is espn do a real story for a change. lets see espn do a story on how the sec rose to the top of the college fb world on the backs of the recruits that they toss off thier teams when they over sign.

it is on coincidence that lsu and bama are again 1/2 this year and last year and next year and next year and next year after that…. until the sec stops acting like a semi pro leaque that has classes for kicks.

No they didn’t “fix” not having enough players during the season. But it not very likely that the coaches at the University of Georgia, or Georgia college, or any high school in Georgia do not know how inportant special teams are. is it? Lets just ask these guys and see that what say? I’m pretty sure you know the answer. Not having a solution is just that. Same as Alabama had no solution for being DEAD last in KO coverage a year or 2 ago.

Let me ask this question. Would the coverage team have been better with Jarvis Jones, Ogletree, and Malcome Mitchell on them??? Now, how realistic was tha? We have (till it was not practical this past year) always had players exactly like that on the coverage teams.
