Mike Davis commits to South Carolina Gamecocks over UGA and Tennessee

When we asked Mike Davis about the rumors he was a “secret commitment” to South Carolina the other day, he paused for a couple of seconds and said “Wait until signing day. We’ll see.”

On Friday night, the running back from Stephenson High School went public with his secret on Twitter, announcing that he was committed to South Carolina.

The 5-foot-9, 200-pounder, who is arguably the No. 1 RB out of the state of Georgia for 2012, revealed his secret after arriving at South Carolina on Friday for his official visit. He told Rivals that he picked the Gamecocks over UGA and Tennessee, and decided to go public because “I’m sick of the recruiting process.”

Earlier on Friday, UGA landed the second RB of its recruiting class with the commitment of 4-star Todd Gurley of Tarboro, N.C.

Back to Davis: He is the third Stephenson senior committed to South Carolina, joining DB Kyle Fleetwood and DT Carlos Hood. The Gamecocks, along with UGA and Tennessee, became a major player for Davis after he de-committed from Florida last month after being pledged to the Gators for a year. He broke it off with Florida because he felt misled.

At South Carolina, Davis is viewed as a RB successor to Marcus Lattimore, who may exit early for the NFL after next season. Davis’ older brother played RB for South Carolina’s archrival, Clemson. James Davis tweeted that he was “wearing my Clemson gear” while at South Carolina accompanying his brother this weekend. We think he was joking.

This past season, Davis rushed for 1,924 yards and 21 touchdowns. However, Davis moved up in the eyes of some scouts and recruiting analysts after his stellar performances in practices as last week’s U.S. Army All-America all-star game in Texas.

Best Wishes to M Davis. Once Gurley picked us, it was a no brainer for him at USCe. The fact that he’ll be there with his teammates just made his decision easier.

Congratulations Mike. I hate to see a good player leave the state. I hope you have plenty success. We have our 2 backs (Marahall, Gurley) now lets get both lines in shape. Glad to see all the defensive players coming back, we should have a solid D. GATA.

I don’t blame him. He made a good decision. Here is for the best to you kid in the future. I don’t believe he was a secret commitment. I believe he made an emotional and snap decision once he saw Gurley commit. Now I don’t mean he got all ‘female” emotional; I mean he probably made up his mind once Gurley announced, that’s why you saw it on twitter. He did state he was waiting until signing day, right? In this era, people seem to be blowing steam on twitter.

And who knows, the kid might start at the beginning of the season. I don’t believe Lattimore will be healthy or ready for at least the first 4 games. Lattimore may not be “all there” all season, because the smart money is for him to save himself for the draft.

It was obvious he was waiting to see where Gurley was going and if he signed with UGA, Davis would sign somewhere else. I guess he really didn’t want to go with UGA anyway, and I think UGA got the better end of the deal.
Good luck to the kid at USC.
If Crowley decides to mature a little and gets into good shape, UGA is going to have one heck of a back field for sure now. I personally feel we will se a new Crowell on the field this year. We are loaded at RB, but I still think Malcome will transfer. Good luck to him as well.
I am concerned though about the plan to have Mason redshirt next year. LeMay, may be the better of the two or possibly of all three of the QB’s already on the roster. He can’t red shirt anymore unless it is medical, and from what I have read, he has impressed his fellow team mates as well as the coaches now. He is basically being told to sit around until you are a junior and then you get to play. It also sends a message to any QB’s coming in this year, that you will ride the pine for a long time as well. I am not a fan of this preordained hierarchy being established before the season even begins. I think it stifles competition and we may lose LeMay due to this. If the kid is so good as the coaches say, why isn’t there an open competition for the position. What is the purpose for LeMay and the new QB, to even practice hard at all, if the position is not open to competition. I would much rather see a dual QB set used this year, or at least a willingness of the OC and HC, to pull a QB, or any other player for that fact, when they are having a bad day, than to declare basically, before the season even starts, that competition and minds are already set, on this position or that.
I would be interested to hear other fans opinions about this. Trolls need not reply, since logic is something that passes most by, and stupid comments without merit, don’t add anything to the conversation.

Mr. Davis…….

I think everyone was sick of the recruiting process of you, and I think Georgia went after Curley more because of character (him being of positive character like Marshall). I think the Georgia coaches are sick of having character issues at RB. Hopefully, you will develop a more positive attitude and become a very good back in the SEC and at South Carolina. Florida has Matt Jones, Mike Gillissee, and Mack Brown for this coming football season, and they are are already in great shape with 3 outstsanding backs from the state of Florida next year.

The SEC East is on the way back!

P.S……Take note of what happened to Mr. Garcia at South Carolina and do the right thing there.

I think Clemson was an option…..but SC gives the kid the best opportunity to play without much competition at RB….something he seems concerned about. No way he was coming to Georgia with Marshall there and then Curley committing….plus Crowell.

What do you think Crowell is thinking right now?

Mason’s decision was good for him and great for UGA! He is the heir apparent to Murray and will get at least one full season as Georgia’s starter. Of course there will be competition when Murray leaves and it will probably be between him and LeMay. LeMay will get his chance. You can’t keep a great player off the field. If Murray gets hurt this year, they will pull the red shirt off and Mason is ready and hopefully LeMay as well. Any team that is going to compete for championships, has to go into the season with at least two quarterbacks ready to play. Now, Georgia is in great position at the QB position for the next four years .

To Redandblack dog and others about Murray:
I too want the QB competition to be open in the spring. But if I’m the coach Murray’s going to have the huge edge due to experience. I agree the competition wpould be good to keep Murray on his toes. But to all these people who want to bench him because of his turnovers…do you really think the answer to this is to put someone in with little to no experience? You believe they would have LESS turnovers? I think Murray is good, not great, and as CMR is apt to say, he gives us our best chance to win. I agree he hasn’t done as well in the big ones as we need him to, but what is the better option? I say this year, get Lemay in some of these cupcake games, let him get some snaps and see how he does.

Wallydog,

You will never see me say that Murray should be benched. All I am trying to say is, red shirting Mason, just puts us at a bottleneck for the next two years and might make LeMay reconsider. What if Murray stays until 2014? Then Mason has one year and LeMay is relegated to back up and not starting until 2015. I don’t think LeMay will sit for those years and be happy. I think the QB position should be just as competitive for playing time as any. It would appear that competition for the position is already been conducted, so I don’t see a lot ofmotivation for the back ups to give it their all in practice. I haven’t heard anything about how LeMay feels yet so maybe they are both happy with it. Who knows, if we have a stronger line this year and do a better job of protecting the passer, maybe Murray will be a barn burner, but the whole idea of stifling competition before the spring even gets here, sets kind of funny on my gut right now. Maybe it will all work out, but right now, I think it is a concern.

I thought the whole nonsensical “Dream Team” concept was to get the best players in Georgia. Now in this case we have the Dawgs signing 2 running backs from North Carolina and the best back in Georgia goes out of state. But it’s still “Dream Team 2″, or “Ring Team”, right?

For all the posts by Georgia fans criticizing Georgia high school players that go out of state, there seems to be no criticism of Marshall and Gurley for leaving the state of North Carolina or of Richt for prioritizing North Carolina players over in state players.

He’s not promising you playing time like he did DJ…he’s going to red shirt you to use you as insurance, by the time it will be time for you to start, he’ll have recruited another wonder boy that “has the promise” from the annointed one on high, that being Mark Richt….get out.

This guy is a prima donna. He complained because they didn’t give him the jersey number he wanted at one of the high school events. He’s 5′9, 200 lbs. I’m tired of small backs. Gurley is 6′0 or 6′1, and about 210-215 with the frame to add about 10-15 more pounds. He’s gonna be a beast before he leaves UGA. Marshall is 5′11 so he’s tall and about 195. He’ll be over 215 by the time he’s a sophomore. See what I mean? I like big backs. Don’t know about you.

Gurley & Marshall & Crowell & Malcome….what a tandem. Alright Bobo you’ve got the horses to work with. Use em. If you call the gameplans right, these guys should never get tired whatsoever. They should all be fresh come the 4th quarter. You know Crowell will come out when he bumps his toe on the turf and be out for the rest of the game, so get Marshall and Gurley ready to play NOW. Malcome should be our starter vs. Buffalo week 1 anyway.

Gurley is bigger, stronger and faster than Davis and Marshall runs a 4.31 forty. UGA doesn’t need 3 RB’s in this class but I do wish Davis had gone to Clemson instead of the Ole Bald Corch. Hate to see any Georgia players go to a coach that despises UGA. I have my fingers crossed that Avery Young will join John Theus as the future strength of the offense. The OL will be talented but very young and inexperienced this season.

Good luck Mr. Davis! I wish you the best. I am a huge dawg fan and always have been. But I do not blame any one for not wanting to come to UGA. We have one of the best facilities in the country, but most of our fans suck! AT times I am almost embarrassed by the fans behavior. This past year we built an 18 year old kid up (Crowell) into something he could have never lived up to and quickly turned on him and tore him down. Yes im sure he is a little immature and he made some mistakes but how would most of us acted if we were 18 and had so called grown men putting that much pressure on us to save the program? He fights through injury and tries to play in the SEC championship game and the fans boo him off the field? C’mon man! GO DAWGS!

RedandBlackDawg and Wally,

I think the competition is there. My hope for this season is that the offense gets a big enough lead so LeMay can get in the game to gain some experience. Don’t forget he hasn’t played in a live game in two years. I think LeMay has the talent and will make a strong case to be the starter but he still might be a year away. Murray only has two years left. Let’s hope he learned from this year and won’t cause as many turnovers.

Go DAWGS!!

Good Luck to the kid. I am sure that he is tired of the recruiting process. However, he contributed to his own situation by committing so early before he had a chance to visit other schools. Some players do committ early because it was a dream of playing at a certain school since they were little tots. If you have grown up being a Dawg Fan and they offer you should live your dream. Unfortunately they are a lot of high school players who “play the recruiting game” by wanting to pump it for all the press they can get. The college recruiters know this and start recruiting a kid early to develop a bond. There are some coaches who offer a ton of players and as thee committments fill up will come back to a previous offer and say “you waited to late-we are full at that position. There are some coaches who will offer-get the kid to committ and later pull the offer because they have picked up a player that is better (look what Tennessee has done this year).
