Todd Gurley, the 4-star RB from Tarboro, N.C., committed to UGA over Clemson on Friday.
“I just came here to tell you where I will be taking my talents to next year, and that will be the University of Georgia … Go Dawgs,” Gurley said.
The 6-foot, 210-pounder is commitment No. 17 for UGA’s 2012 recruiting class. He is the second at RB, joining fellow North Carolinian Keith Marshall, the 5-star from Raleigh, N.C. Marshall is ranked as the nation’s No. 1 RB by Scout.com and enrolled in college early, starting classes at UGA this week.
Gurley is a consensus top 15 RB in the country.
“Todd Gurley ran track for Team USA in Europe last summer and when you put those letters across your chest, you’re elite,” said Rusty Mansell, National Recruiting Analyst for 247sports. “You’re talking about a kid who will be in the range of 220 and 225 pounds as a freshman. He ran for 235 yards and four touchdowns in the state championship game. He played through the playoffs with an ankle injury and toughed it out. All of that let me know he’s an elite running back and he will play early wherever he goes.”
Gurley and Marshall became fast friends after meeting at a track meet last spring, and bonded during the recruiting process. They talked often about playing in college together, and planned out official visits at the same time to both UGA and Clemson.
After Gurley committed, Marshall wrote on Twitter:
Too hype right now about my boy [Todd Gurley] coming to UGA.. NC connection.. we just tryna be #legendary
Note: Mike Davis, the RB from Stephenson High School, confirmed with the AJC on Friday that he still intends to take his official visit to UGA next week, despite Gurley’s commitment. This weekend, Davis is visiting South Carolina, where is rumored to be a “secret commitment.”
