Will UGA add another one of the nation’s top running backs to its 2012 recruiting class?
Todd Gurley, a 6-foot, 200-pounder from Tarboro, N.C., will announce between UGA, Clemson and NC State shortly after 2 p.m. Friday.

RB Todd Gurley (247Sports.com)
“I think Georgia has a good shot,” said Rusty Mansell, National Recruiting Analyst from 247Sports. “From everything I keep hearing, Georgia is in there with Clemson and NC State. I think it was a big deal for the other schools that he decided not to take an official visit to North Carolina because that’s one school he’s probably visited the most over the years. If things had gone differently at North Carolina, with the coaching changes and possible NCAA violations, they would have as good of a chance as anybody. But from everything I’m hearing right now, it’s probably going to come down to Clemson and Georgia as his final two, once it’s all said and done.”
Ironically, one of the biggest things in UGA’s favor with Gurley is that the Bulldogs already landed another running back, 5-star Keith Marshall from Raleigh, N.C. Marshall, who enrolled early in UGA this week, and Gurley are good friends, even arranging it where they could take official visits the same time at both UGA (for the South Carolina game) and Clemson. Since committing to UGA, Marshall has vowed to recruit Gurley and others with him to the Bulldogs for a class he’s dubbed “The Ring Team.”
Gurley, who is ranked as a 4-star, talked about UGA in his diary with ESPN High School Football:
My next top school is UGA, which is a school I visited three times and I see why people say it’s a great school. First of all, the food is the best and that’s my favorite thing about the school. My bro Keith Marshall goes there now and that would be good to have two NC boys in the backfield representing for our state. Plus, the relationship I developed over time with (running backs) coach Bryan McClendon and coach Mark Richt has been great. Two great coaches running a great program.
If UGA was to land Gurley, there are rumors that it would end the courtship between the Bulldogs and arguably the top running back from the state of Georgia, Stephenson’s Mike Davis. UGA got heavily involved with Davis after he de-committed from Florida last month after being pledged to the Gators for nearly a year.
The 5-9, 200-pound Davis is scheduled to take an official visit to UGA on Jan. 20. He will announce between the Bulldogs, South Carolina, FSU, Tennessee and Clemson on National Signing Day (Feb. 1).

RB Mike Davis (Photo by US Army All-America Bowl)
“That’s something I really don’t know, and I don’t think anyone would know except for Georgia,” Mansell said. “I think that would be a pull if Georgia could bring Mike Davis, Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall. Just my opinion, but I don’t see that happening. If Georgia were to get Todd Gurley, that would probably end things with Mike Davis because he’s got other options as well.”
We contacted Davis to ask about the possible scenario: If Gurley committed to UGA, how would that affect how he felt about the Bulldogs? “It doesn’t affect me at all. There’s going to be competition everywhere you go in college.”
Davis was also asked about the rampant rumors that he is a “secret commitment” to South Carolina, where he will take an official visit this weekend. After pausing for a couple of seconds, Davis replied, “Wait until signing day. We’ll see.”
Back to Gurley: As expected, there are rumors everywhere on the Internet. Ryan Bartow of Clemson’s Rivals website reported that UGA’s Rivals website will be at the press conference because three UGA commits indicate that Gurley will pick the Bulldogs. Bartow also wrote that he felt like UGA was in the lead at the beginning of the week but now Clemson may have the edge after talking to his contacts within the last 48 hours.

Would love to see Gurley wear the red and black. Good competition does nothing but make everybody better. We saw this year that you can never have too many running backs. Hopefully a good 2012 class will push Crowell, Malcom and the others to become stronger and better.

Unfortunately, we don’t see the “competition improving people” at UGA. Take Murray or Joe Cox as a prime example! If CMR would open up every position as a Saban does, we might see true improvement or Murray crumble. Again, CMR is a great guy…but, does that make him a great coach and the answer is NO! If so, he would have fired Martinez long before he was forced to or benched Joe Cox…now, because of his loyalty with Bobo, we are going to have the same pathetic offense that cannot make adjustments or beat top-ranked competition!
I don’t care how many 4-5 star athletes we recruit, if they are not being coached up to a higher level, what good does it do? Look at our “National Recruiting Ranking” over the last 10 years…Top 10. And no matter what anyone says, CMR won the first couple of years with someone else’s recruits and a STRONG coaching staff. That staff was being offered other jobs every time you turned your head around. Do you honestly think that this staff goes through that,,,NO! And there is a reason for it. CMR cannot make the tough decision that a HC in the SEC has to make, especially at $3-4 million a year! We can expect the same mediocrity we have seen and UGA is too great of a place and has to much to offer than for what we are getting! Look at what Saban did in such a short time in Tuscaloosa…we can have all the players in the world, but if they are not being coached properly, it doesn’t mean crap!
Has anyone been to Tuscaloosa or South Carolina? I could never see wanting to play at these places after visiting a place like UGA. The atmosphere, the scenery, the people…not to mention the outstanding facilities…UGA is equal or better to T-Town in all of these. And this is from someone who has grown up in Alabama, partied and been to many games in Tuscaloosa and Auburn and I am proud of my state. However, I grew up a UGA fan and have never waivered. I love the Bulldogs and “live & die” with every play, every game. It infuriates me to no end that UGA is not considered among the “great” teams in college football. UGA deserves more and until the nitwit Adams moves on or McGarity wakes up…it will not happen for 3-5 years! There is NO excuse with what UGA has to offer!
I hope Gurley chooses the Dawgs and they can breath some life back into the running game that we haven’t seen since Knowshon left!

BamaDawgs,
Do you not remember 02, 03, 05, 07? Those were great years for UGA! Even this year was a great year considering the year before was a disaster. Losing Knowshan and Stafford early really hurt UGA for a couple of years but they now have reloaded and should compete once again for the SEC Championship next year. I get tired of Dawg fans thinking unless UGA wins the NC, it has been a terrible year. UGA had a good year this year and next year should be great.
Let me guess if UGA goes 11-1 next year and loses in overtime in the SEC Championship, they should fire CMR for not making it (once again) to the NC? Give me a break. We didn’t win the SEC championship for 20 years before CMR and we have won 2 and been to 4 in his tenure. So His 10 years have been better then the previous 19.

If we get Gurley, I think Davis goes to SC. Lattimore is probably gone after next year and UGA will be loaded with Crowell, Malcolme, Marshall and Gurley for at least 2 years. So share the backfield with 4 other top backs for 2 years or start (maybe) his second year at SC. I just don’t see Davis wanting to join a backfield this crowded. Would love to have him though.

Having too many running backs as some put it on here, is the reason that LSU rolled over our butts in the championship game against LSU as I remember it. They had a fresh back with four capable people on their team to run against a tired and frustrated UGA defense. I say, to young Gurley, come on down and be with your PAL Marshall, and be part of a very good team. A strong running game, means a more balanced offensive attack, means a better passing game, equals more wins. We have a young but fairly deep OL with the recruits and last years returnees so they can do good and I believe opening up the offense will also help, but that will be up to CMR and Bobo to do, because they will have the talent they need to make it happen.
We have two new kickers but both are capable of getting the job done. If we tackle better and have a speedy kick off and punt returner back there, we can fix that area.
The defense will be a top 5 in the country so I don’t think UGA has any worries there either.
All in all, this year is shaping up very good.
And now, let the true trolling begin.

If this past season didn’t teach anything else , it told us that with CMR and Bobo wanting a balanced offense at all cost. This mean’s we need a minimum of 4 if not 5 tailback’s. They will all get plenty of carry’s which is only half their job. CMR demand’s that his tailback’s are effective blocker’s.

I think if you compare RB’s that UGA has a shot at, Gurley would be the more physically dominate one, simply due to size. He is 3 inches taller, and if need be he could probably put on a few pounds easier than Davis.
I think if Davis had wanted to be a Dawg, he would have committed by now, especially knowing that Gurley would announce on this day. He might well end up at SC, but I think if Gurley decides on UGA, we will probably be getting the one that has a little higher upside and physical presence. We could still use a hard nosed kid like Gurley, that I think would be comfortable going up the middle and could move the pile. I was hoping Malcome would be that guy, since he showed signs of it, during his brief time on the field. I think Malcome will transfer if Gurley or Davis decide to come to UGA, and in the long run, maybe that would be best for him. I am really not sure what the problem was last year, but he sure would have been nice to have in a few of the games.

The reason that Moreno did not play as a true freshman is very well documented. Don’t pretend that it’s a simple matter of our coaches all being stupid. They have played plenty of freshman over upperclassmen, all over the field. Specifically, true freshman RB have played under this staff as much or more than have RS. In fact, Some of those very same RBs that you claim got preferential time over Moreno played as True freshman.

I don’t get all the Crow ‘el bashing. I too was disappointed in his performance this year, but only because my expectations were too high for him coming in. He was a freshman. He wasn’t in SEC shape. He was injured, and he was overwhelmed. Yet he did gain 850 yards. Would have gained a thousand if he didn’t fire up the bong. Hopefully the game slows down for him next year and his head shrinks two sizes next year.
Crow ‘el should be an abject lesson for all us Dawg fans not to put too much pressure and expectations on a true freshman running back such as Marshall or possibly Gurley.

We can recruit the best running backs in the nation every year, but if we don’t have a line that can block what good is it. I would like to know what other O-Linemen we are going after.
I love to blame things on Bobo, and still do for the most part, but if the O-Line did a better overall job against the better competition and were able to run the ball there would have been more success.

AltamahaDAWG,
If Davis wanted to play for the DAWGS he would have already given his verbal. Instead I think he is waiting to see if Gurley will commit first, and then he will be able to go to another school, where he could be the featured back. Of course he would not see that at SC next year, but certainly it could happen in 2013. I believe he is probably a pretty good RB, but I am not too sure I buy his, not worried about competition though as he can see that UGA already has two 5 star running backs, and I don’t think he sees himself sharing duties with two other RB’s already in place here. Gurley would be the better catch in my opinion, both for his physical size and the fact, that he would fit in easier with the two RB;s UGA already has, and could be a tough guy up the middle, given his good size. I believe we could see a different Crowell next year, and if he steps up, the addition of Gurley would make a heck of a tandem of RB’s. UGA simply can’t rely on 170 pound back ups to spell the featured runners.
Not trying to be harsh about Davis; I just don’t think he sees himself as part of of a 3 or 4 back rotation, and he stated he is not worried about competition , which tells me, he doesn’t get into the idea that all of the backs would share carries. LSU, for the most part had a nice rotation doing exactly what UGA wants to be able to do. If you listen to what Marshall said, about wanting to be part of a good team of RGB’s so one guy wouldn’t get beat up all the time, and I think that is what UGA is hoping to do if Gurley signs.

Todd is a legit 6′1″, and weighs close to 210. He can run (has won state in NC in the 110 hurdles, as well as running for the US junior team), but the backfield is where he belongs. He can do some special things with the football in his hands. If he were to play defense, however……most project that he could be a very good safety.

Good point 1eye. I think the coaches will give him every opportunity to carry the torch at RB. If he can do it great. If he can’t then such is life. He’ll still come out a lot farther in life then most.
What I think will happen is you’ll see IC and Richard carry most of the load next season. Then some of Boo Malcom. Then you’ll see Marshal and Gurley (hopefully) get a carry or two here and there for sub’ing. The back you’ll see phased out will be Carlton Thomas… if he’s still even on the team then.

No problem buddy. I always enjoy reading your stuff on these boards. There are very few who actually come here to discuss football and the topics at hand, but you are one. I don’t comment often, because these boards devolve into trolls slinging mud most of the time.
Anyway, here’s hoping we land Todd this afternoon. He’s not just a great football player, but a great kid. That is a good trend in our recruiting recently. Discipline issues will never be a problem with kids like Marshall, Gurley, Ray Drew, Sterling Bailey, Chris Conley, and many of the others.

There is only one flaw in this kid’s game and that is he runs too high. But that should be corrected at the college level. I don’t see how his commitment should affect Mike Davis. Gurley, Davis, and Marshall all run different styles and can (and should) be used in different ways. Davis seems like the every down back, a perfect Plan B concerning Crowell. Marshall and Gurley seem like the do- everything types but definitely not 20-25 carries every week. I hope it’s explained to them that way. Next season, Georgia can and will use all 3 (or 4 hopefully). As the years roll along, I could see some issues concerning playing time. No freshman can hold up and be effective in the SEC playing RB by himself. ALL of them wore down by season’s end, except Herschel of course. (And please, do me a favor and not get your panties in a wad because I brought up Herschel Walker. There can be only one. DUH!!!)

Samuel should move to fullback. However, this may cause some “trouble” with the Ogletree twins. The key word being “may”. We all know how people are when they feel they deserve something. Xander has played well and deserves a shot. But Samuel is bigger, stronger, more experienced, and a senior. Go figure?

As long as Gurley keeps his pad level down between the tackles…he should be a great back. It’ll come down to being able to take the hits between the tackles. Long strider…will have to keep him between the tackle…no runs to the outside for him. He’ll be a potential power back, but wouldnt expect too much in his first year, possible redshirt.

My concern is less about “good kids” as opposed to developing them as players. There are “good kids” who come into a situation like this and take full advantage, i.e., by taking it for granted. It seems like teams such as Alabama and LSU, and some pro teams not named the Falcons…lol… can develop players and get them to perform consistently and relentlessly. If one player gets hurt or suspended, they just plug another one in and there isn’t much drop off. Could Georgia, realistically, have started the season any worse than LSU with that bar fight, the suspension of your starting QB, and the other suspension of your best player? I don’t think so. Georgia needs to figure out what keeps the 2nd and 3rd stringers hungry and able to perform when called upon and again the following year when they have the potential to start. A formula exists somewhere and it’s locked in Bill Belichik’s office safe…lol.

How come UGA fans were all over Tech for getting excited about signing 3 plays from NC last year, saying they can’t play football and stuff in NC, now this year UGA fans are all excited for 2 NC running backs.
Gurley – Go to NC St or Clemson if you want to play hard competitive football. Go to UGA if you want a shot at national championship, if they have a good team they will go undefeated in SEC and get a shot at championship like a SEC team does every year.

Anyone who thinks Gurley will not be able to run between the tackles in the SEC does not know much about football. He will have to learn to run behind his pads in college but alot of rb’s have to learn that after dominating high school competition. That 6′ 200lb frame will be more like 6′ 215 or 220lbs by the time he ever touches a ball in a game.

I think its a stretch myself to have Crowell, Marshall, Malcom, Sammual and the expect another one or two of these top ranked RB’s to come to UGA. Yes, an SEC team needs multiple backs to survive and these backs know it. It works to their advantage and the NFL scouts know this as well… BUT this would normally be 1-2, 4-5*’s and then multiple lesser backs in the mix. Just dont know if there is room on one team for 3 or 4 backs with this kind of potential. If we mis on Gurley and Davis, i understand and still think we will be OK at the position.

Lining him up at FB could be very interesting and could help Bobo with the predictable play calling.
I say he is definately big enough at 230.
Is he considered a good blocker? I think he is??/
UGA, if I am not mistaked handed the ball off the the FB 2 inmes this entire season. I remembet the first, and it was very late in the season.
This could really give BOBO an option to help with our predictable play calling. You KNOW all DC’s key on the TB every play and the bring it to the QB as the second key.
Having RS on the field with another capable RB could slow down the run blitx packages.

I expect Davis to commit to Clemson where they have no RB commits and SIX OT commits to block for him. Georgia needs to sign Avery Young and John Theus. To bad they didn’t get Brandon Greene and Vidal Alexander. For some reason UGA has had a difficult time recruiting OL in state. That is probably Richt’s biggest failure as far as recruiting goes. They could have two all pro RB’s back there running the ball and they won’t make a yard without at least an AVERAGE OL. The problem with the running game this year had a lot more to do with the OL than Crowell.

Over recent years, you realize don’t you, that Bama’s won two, LSU has one two, Florida has won two, and Auburn (who took your tight end prospect, CAM NEWTON,) and won one. Hell, it’s not that hard anymore! Losing Davis rivals CAM NEWTON. Thank goodness Richt and Booboo can insulate themselves in their little Athens haven, otherwise they would become aware of what a joke they are! LET ME GET THIS STRAIGHT. You’re taking this kid over the best downhill runner in America, and DAVIS, because of your insane evaluation, will end up with your SEC EAST rival, who for the past two years has kicked your butt with yet another Atlanta product, All-SEC offensive tackle, ROKEVIOUS WATKINS from Creekside. Following UGA football is like living a friggin’ NIGHTMARE.. Hell, at least Davis won’t have to try to run behind those private school blubber butts Richt and Booboo are going to put out there. Excellent point made by 1eyedJack. The public bashing of Crowell made by the “fans”…and I use that term loosely….was completely out of control. The pressure and expectations placed on a true freshman running back got way too excessive. Not every 18 year old kid is mature enough to handle the spotlight and that kind of pressure. Hopefully Isaiah has grown up some and learned how to handle the expectations that come with being a major college running back. Every kid deserves a learning curve. I cannot say the same for 30-50 year old men publicly humiliating an 18 year old kid. If IC doesn’t learn the ropes this year….no need to spout more venom, I’m sure Richt will deal with it.

CMR did not win with Donnan’s recruits unless you believe they all got NCAA approval to play 5 or 6 years. He won with his recruits namely Greene, Pollack, etc. CMR has a winning or even record against every coach in the SEC including Saban The Dwarf and Miles. CMR is in the Top 10 active coaches in America in won/loss percentage. I strongly recommend that since you have all those Alabama ties that you pick either AUBURN or Bama, or both, as your team(s) to pull for. Auburn would be nice for you. Then you could curse CMR as he continues his domination over the War Chickens.

If this guy commits we’d have 3 cable runningbacks in our stable. 4 if Richard Samuel wants to stay at RB. We saw what 4 healthy RBs can do for a team with LSU. No doubt it’s a benefit. We could split up the carries with all of them. Crowell, Marshall, Gurley etc. These guys can grown together. I’m excited about our future!!!!!! Now get some big ol boys in here!

The Orange Bowl committe knows that they have put themselves in a horrific hole by having the ACC Champ @ 7-5 play some lower level school like Iowa or W Va and that their TV ratings are in the tank, all because of this bone headed ACC tie up. It is killing them.
ACC is a coastal draw for TV viewership at best, primarily from Baltimore to Miami with most of this area more SEC aligned than ACC. Pitt and Syracuse will help but who are they?
Syracuse had their last great team in 60 with Heisman Ernie Davis and Pitt with Heisman LB Green & Tony Dorsett in mid 70s.
Orange has paid the price in ratings AND ticket sales with their ACC tie up.

Did y’all even look at this kid’s tape? He runs straight up! MIKE DAVIS IS THE BEST NATURAL RUNNING BACK IN AMERICA ! If you “lose” this kid, it should open up things for you to land Davis. But with Richt, Booboo and UGA fans, you never know. You’ll probably discover something is wrong with Davis’ “Character”, and it will end up, incredibly, with you fools rejecting him rather than the other way around! It gets by these other schools, but not us. These other schools simply aren’t as perceptive as UGA! Here at Georgia, we’re discerning in our selections, For example, Richt and Booboo saw what no one else did. What was that? That CAM NEWTON was a tight end! What an hilarious program.

I just dont feel like either will feel comfortable that there is enough room for another top rated prospect and I dont guess I can blame them. Wont be suprised if we miss on both.

The only thing I think you’re really off base on is this wild notion that UGA is racist when it comes to playing O-linemen. That’s one of the most off the wall things I’ve ever heard.

I would love to see him in red and black, but based on his diary post on ESPN yesterday, it seems he’ll go to Clemson: “My last school is the Clemson Tigers, a school I always wanted to play for after watching C.J. Spiller run there and break records. That was something I dreamed about and now that I have the opportunity to go there, it’s just crazy to have my dreams come true. My Clemson visit was the best out of all the schools I visited because the time I had with the players was so much better then every other school, so that’s a plus in my book. Even though they offered me late and stopped recruiting for a while, I didn’t really care about that because that’s just the business of it, so it didn’t affect me too much. “

ANYONE: Who is the toughest runner between Davis and Gurley? I may be wrong but I believe that we need a bruising presence at RB. Compare Davis and Gurley.
Davis is more of a bruiser IMO. Watched film on both and Davis is more of a power, between the tackles type of guy with pretty good speed. Gurley has track speed and good size (6′1″ 200, I believe) but he runs a little high and I don’t think he’s as elusive as Davis. Davis is a true running back and could develop as a Mark Ingram/T. Richardson type of back, while Gurley’s size and speed could land him at another position (he also plays on D for his high school). Both good backs, but I think Davis will be more durable and an overall better back in college. Just my opinion…

I agree with what you said about Crowell. I think he did a great job behind a very mediocre offensive line. What hurt Crowell so much is when he got busted for smoking pot during the football season. Most Freshmen have their first year to cool it and get use to college life, studies and demand’s from practice but Georgia had to throw Crowell in head first and force him to learn how to swim from the first day. His immaturity was his biggest problem but most at 17-18 have that same problem.
As the season went on you could tell he was getting more serious and growing up faster than he should have but in the end he will be a better person and player for it.
I think Crowell stay’s at Georgia and after his first year under coach T , in the off season , he will show a lot more endurance and toughness. I also think CMR is very proud of him and think he did a great job in 2011. But, having said that I also think he will not get another chance if he messes up again like the pot smoking thing. CMR will demand a lot more this next year.
Me personally , I like Crowell a lot and think he can be one of the best Tailback’s in Georgia history . It will be all left up to him and his Sophomore year will determine which direction he ends up going.

Taco…I saw the same thing about Gurley…but he keeps his pads low..and does start running high until he gets into the second level. Pretty much like track stars do…start low..then open up when they get into their next gear. Guess it could go either way with him. It will be interesting to see if we significantly improve our offensive gameplan..and fit schemes to the players, not players to the schemes. thats how we consistently beat ourselves in games.

I will always love Richard Samuel for the 2011 Florida game, but he’s not running back. He shouldn’t see any significant playing time next year, And for that matter, neither should Carlton Thomas. No room for 170lb RB’s in the SEC. Marshall is a burner and he will weigh @200lbs. Let those who want to break rules sit the bench, since they’re apparently no way theyr’e going to be kicked off the team.

Our defense will probably be one of the best 2 in the country and we have stockpiled RB’s. Our O-line will be more athletic than last years. John Theus is a beast run blocking. I saw him in that Army All-American Bowl mauling D-lineman run blocking. He was shoving the D-lineman 10 yards back down field. We are set up nicely for that run next year. We are also loaded with young talented wide receivers and Justin Scott-Wesley red shirted last year. I heard he was hard to cover on the scout team during the year. We are set up nicely for that run next year.

First, I understand when 8 wins was considered good at UGA. However, as the saying goes “When You Become Satisfied, Improvement Stops”. UGA has some of the BEST facilities in the country, a great atmosphere and NOTHING should stop the Dawgs from competing with Bama, LSU or Florida for NC’s!
Second, I never said anything about cutting players…now cutting some coaches on this staff I am all for!
Finally and I apologize for not remembering the person’s “name” who posted this…Yes, I remember the SEC Titles that CMR has won. My point is that he played in 2 of those with another coaches players and a terrific coaching staff. What has the last 7 years brought us? We won one and got blown out in one. Regardless, if we had played Bama, LSU or Arkansas this year, I personally think we would have been lucky to win 8 games…AVERAGE Year! Not good enough anymore!
