Georgia Tech vs. UGA for AJC Super 11 DE Dalvin Tomlinson?

Dalvin prediction?

It’s shaping up to be a head-to-head recruiting battle between UGA and Georgia Tech for the arguably the state’s top uncommitted football prospect.

Dalvin Tomlinson, the AJC Super 11 defensive end from Henry County High School, will make a rare midweek official visit to UGA on Monday. The 6-foot-3, 270-pounder took recruiting trips last month to both Georgia Tech and Alabama.

UGA assistant Bryan McClendon recently stopped by Tomlinson’s high school to secure a spot for the Bulldogs in the recruiting sweepstakes.

“He spoke to Dalvin for a good hour,” Henry County coach Mike Rozier said, “and when coach McClendon came out, he said ‘We’re doing something different. The visit is going to be different. It’s going to be Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday because of wrestling on the weekend.’ Dalvin has missed a lot of wrestling because of football, and he wants to win that third state title, so Georgia is going to do something special with him for the official visit.”

Strange but true - it's very rare when these two men go head-to-head as the finalists for a prospect (AJC photo)

Tomlinson is a two-time defending state champion in wrestling’s heavyweight position. He only took up the sport to stay in football shape and ended up being pretty good in it. Wrestling’s state championships in duals will be held this weekend, while the traditional state championships are next month.

Georgia Tech and Alabama have been rumored to be the longtime frontrunners for Tomlinson. What about UGA?

“Georgia has been involved with Dalvin for a long time; I heard from [Mark Richt] a lot during the season,” Rozier said. “I think I’m speaking for Dalvin but I think it’s coming down to those three schools – Georgia Tech, Alabama and Georgia. I’ve been talking to Dalvin about that, and he said he still hasn’t made up his mind about where he’s going to sign. I guess he’s going to wait on the Georgia visit and go from there.”

There are rumors that Alabama is not really involved with Tomlinson any longer because it has 27 commitments. Rozier declined to speculate, simply saying, “I haven’t heard from Alabama’s coaches in a while.”

What about Georgia Tech? The Yellow Jackets may have inside position because Tomlinson attended nearly every home game and also rated his official visit to Georgia Tech as an “8 or a 9.” The Yellow Jackets have also told Tomlinson that they will hold a scholarship open for him for as long as it takes for him to decide.

“Right now, it looks like it could be on signing day when Dalvin decides,” Rozier said. “But, of course, that could change. He may do it sooner.”

Dalvin-TomlinsonTomlinson has a 3.9 GPA and is also being recruited by Ivy League schools. Last spring, Tomlinson had the rare distinction of being offered by Florida, UGA and Harvard on the same day. He appeared ready to make an early college decision last summer but his mother died unexpectedly from a longtime illness in June.

Dalvin, take it from a Henry County citizen and former UGA attendee, go with the Dawgs. When I was trying to choose my school a long time ago, I spent a lot of time at both Tech and UGA campuses. UGA IS better!!! GO DAWGS!!! GATA!!!

McClendon out doing what he does best- recruiting. Dalvin would be a huge commit for the Dawgs. An intelligent, athletic DL with a lot of upside. He has the frame to eat up blockers in the 3-4 scheme, but also the strength and quickness to bust up running plays. perhaps most impressive: 3.9 GPA. This is not our father’s UGA admissions office. UGA is much tougher to get into than in years past for non athletes.
Dalvin – Come to UGA and get an outstanding education combined with an outstanding football program (something the other GA school can’t really brag about.)
Go dawgs!

Grantham need’s to get involved and seal the deal. This is one guy that we should go all out for, Intelligent, meaning he will learn the play book fast and probably won’t have to red shirt and already in shape for the speed of the SEC.

Techie 65,

That is a lame excuse for your side if you are trying to recruit a player for sure. This kid is smart enough to see through your lameness and if that is the same tactic your school is trying to use, is it any wonder you can’t attract any top flight football players. If he wants a degree in engineering, he might come to your school, but if he wants to succeed at football and still get a quality education, kiss him good bye. He could go to UGA and be with a top notch DC and a very good already defensive unit, or he can go to tech. and have to struggle with AL Groh and a second rate football team over all. This kid is way smart enough to know what he wants and if it is not a degree in engineering, he will make the choice that looks the best to him as far as football goes. He will go where the fans support their team, and that will never be at tech. as your attendance figures prove each year.
I wish the kid good luck wherever he goes because he will be a success most likely at whatever he pursues. He is smart enough to ignore people like you, and I dearly hope your coaching staff is smart enough to not even try the approach, you evidently feel will sway him to tech. and against UGA. Kids like this young fellow have their B.S. meter out anytime a college visits or he visits them, so you need to try some different approach.

I hope he ends up in Athens, but the kid would be huge for Tech. He would certainly start as a true freshman at Tech…..But him staying in state is what’s important

If he is being recruited by Ivy League schools and has a 3.9 GPA…..why would you not go? I certainly would nudge my son in that direction, no matter how good a football player he might be. A full ride to an Ivy League school for an education…..and still play football…..no brainer I would think.

Big G,

I certainly hope you are not relying on what you read on these blogs as being all UGA fans. Half of the negative comments on these AJC blogs come from techies acting as if they are UGA fans, and only a small part of the fans of UGA are actually on here. The Stadium sell out rates tell you all you need to know. Don’t choke on your oatmeal laughing at the tech. sell out rate, OK?
You will find out how much the Fans of UGA support their team when you come over to a big boys stadium filled with over 90,000 plus fans, to watch Tech. get their hind ends handed to them once again. It has got to be getting boring, losing this game. Perhaps tech 65 and yourself could work on some new tactics to show how lame you and your school are. We have already run through, the educational requirements excuse, because you haven’t had a football player, graduate in at least the last three years, with an engineering degree, and your school, is last in graduating athletes in the ACC. Time for a new excuse, that escape reality, and is a bunch of falsehoods.

Congratulations Dalvin. You can’t go wrong.

Alabama; Great program. They may cheat, but that is ok, they win. Oversigning is not so bad. Perhaps you won’t one of the people dropped. Integrity is overrated. Saban may step over you if you need CPR but someone will call. I heard they are getting cable in Alabama soon.

Tech: Great school. Football is ok. Go to Tech and play for 36,000 screaming ACC fans each week. The tickets are not expensive. Tell your family to be careful in the parking lot. Not a lot of females at Tech.

UGA: Great Program, Great School, Great Town, Great Coach with CHARACTER. Come play for 92,000 EVERY game. Coach Grantham will help you excel on Defense.

Go Dawgs.

Great luck to Dalvin. Sorry it appears he won’t be coming to Alabama, where he would play for better coaches, under higher standards and get an education where the graduation rates and academic records of athletes far succeed Georgia’s. of course, he could salvage the situation and choose Tech.

To all delusional dwag fans, GT’s business school is rated higher than UGA’s – so our “easiest” major is more highly regarded than arguably your toughest. Take a look at the degree programs for football players at UGA – pure comedy. Another joke is the attendance – UGA is a diploma factory with 3x the masses (who rarely leave the state) and this is something to be proud of? Real selective bunch over there.

Burdell,

Better get your university to notify Wikpedia and other publications like AJC. They didn’t mention it when showing the stats. All I am pointing out to your fans, is that this is not the only reason they go or do not go to Tech. Perhaps if tech. fans didn’t come onto a blog and instantly stop putting down UGA, negative comments would not be directed at Tech. I am sure others come onto blogs and instantly start talking crap about Tech. and claim to be UGA fans, but it is a two way street. We just need to insure these kids stay in Georgia if possible. It has to be some reason, and it is not all just academics. If this kid goes to Tech. or UGA it will be OK with me. I just hope he stays in state, but I would of course prefer he go to UGA. With his GPA, I would think he would have his choice of where to go.
