NOTE: Check back on this blog every few hours for updates on Jenkins until he announces.

Jordan Jenkins, who is considered the state’s No. 1 overall prospect by many, has heard all the conspiracy theories about the timing of his college announcement and says they are untrue.

The 6-foot-3, 250-pound defensive end from Harris County High School has listed Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Auburn as his finalists. He will announce his decision on “The Next Class” show on FOX Sports South at 7 p.m. Monday – 90 minutes before his longtime co-leader, Alabama, takes the field to play for the BCS championship.

The father of the AJC Super 11 selection said that there is no connection between the scheduling of events. “Yes, everybody thinks that; we’ve heard those rumors, too,” Ronald Jenkins said with a laugh. “Actually, we were supposed to do it on Tuesday. Then the network wanted to change it to Monday, not us.

“But, no, we didn’t try to plan it as the same day that Alabama was playing. We never gave that a thought. Besides, if anything, I would think less Alabama people would be watching what Jordan does when there’s a national championship game to watch that night.”

No conspiracy theory: AJC Super 11 DE Jordan Jenkins said timing of Monday's decision has nothing to do with Alabama playing in BCS championship that night (AJC photo)

The elder Jenkins said there is no guarantee that his son will pick Alabama, which has been listed as the leader since last summer until recently. “To tell you the truth, after this week, I don’t even know where he is going to school. Jordan really likes things about all of the schools. This weekend, we’re going to sit down and go over each school again and iron out any differences. We’ll get everybody’s viewpoints in black and white out on the table. My wife and I will give our input, and it will be Jordan’s final decision to make.”

Georgia has emerged as the darkhorse candidate for Jenkins. He nearly cancelled his official visit with the Bulldogs twice because of speculation over Mark Richt’s future. Jenkins ended up making a recruiting trip in November and bonded with Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham.

“Georgia came at us at a different pace than the others,” the elder Jenkins said. “They were one of the first ones to offer, but we didn’t feel the same intensity early in the process as we did from the other schools. Then they came on late.

“Coach Grantham has impressed our family. He definitely let Jordan know how much he wants him there. Coach Grantham and Jordan have a few things in common outside of football, such as fishing. We like Georgia. I guarantee you that Georgia is in it for Jordan.”

UGA defensive coordinator Todd Grantham would have a signature recruiting moment if Jenkins picks UGA

UGA defensive coordinator Todd Grantham would have a signature recruiting moment if Jenkins picks UGA

This could be a defining recruiting moment for Grantham. Despite the second-half collapses by UGA’s defense in its final two games against Michigan State and LSU, Grantham is still considered one of college football’s rising stars at defensive coordinator. Some think Grantham is on track to one day to a candidate as a head coach. However, a top assistant coach hasn’t really “arrived” as a big name until he can use his reputation to make a big splash in recruiting  – either flipping a top defender committed elsewhere, or secure an elite recruit against fierce competition. Jenkins is an opportunity for Grantham to do the latter.

Grantham is a main reason why Jenkins is seriously considering UGA. He was also the coach who had the last opportunity to spout UGA’s sales pitch, flying to meet Jenkins in a Florida hotel on Friday to speak with Jenkins and his family after an all-star game. Jenkins also met with Florida’s assistants.

Back to Jenkins and conspiracy theories: His father confirmed that Jordan has not taped his announcement in advance of Monday’s show. Jenkins will travel to Atlanta and reveal his choice “live” in front of a regional TV audience.

“We’ll see what happens. I’m his father and I’m telling 100 percent that I don’t know where he’s going right now. I know where he said he’s leaning … I’ve got a funny feeling that it’s going to be interesting.”

  • Lassiter FS Kenny Orjioke (6-4, 210) committed to UCLA without ever making an official visit last month. He will make a recruiting trip to ULCA on Jan. 20, but is traveling to Arkansas this weekend. “I might take another visit on the last weekend; I’ll know after my ULCA visit,” Orjioke said. “I’m 100-percent committed to UCLA.” Orjioke, who has nearly 20 offers, skipped a year in a school and is a 16-year old senior.

Baddawg… I think this is a Bama UGA battle.

Lakedawg… We can probably agree if UGA holds off USCe and catches a few passes in the LSU game you guys would be getting ready to face Bama tommorrow night. A lot closer than many really think.

Wow, lot’s of morons in one here. Bama isn’t “cheating” by signing 27 players. You people are just showing how clueless you are of the rules. Here is free lesson in the new rule:

You can only sign 25 players per signing class (you understand that much, but completely fail on the remainder of the rule). HOWEVER, if you sign less than 25 in any given class, players from the next class can count TOWARD the PREVIOUS class, if they are enrolling early.

To put it simply, if you signed 22 last year, you can sign 28 this year (avg = 25) as long as three of those players will be enrolling for the spring semester. We have 9 kids enrolling early in this class, FYI.

So much stupidity on here.

As for Jenkins, we would sure love to have you at Bama, but best wishes wherever you go. The positives of having the opportunity to represent your home state by playing for the home school cannot be overstated. UGA is a good program where I’m sure you’ll experience team and personal success. Again, the Crimson Tide is where it’s at ;) , but you’ll do great regardless of where you go.

Truth, Nice post. To be honest all the people bashing Alabama’s recruiting tactics it has gotten them to 2 national championship games in 3 years so I would say it is working. Questioning the ethics of it is irrelevant and the practice is not as bad as most make it seem. After seeing Alabama and LSU’s success I am definitely for UGA oversigning.

To: Jordan Jenkins and his parents: Who do you trust more for setting examples in life Nick Saban or Coach Richt? After football, I bet Saban wont even know the names of most of his players if he met them on the street. The image he projects is win at all costs and the heck with the rules, grey shirts, oversigning, making promises to kids that will not be kept. I love to win as much as anyone but not the Alabama way. Besides after football, where would you rather live Georgia or Alabama?

You are a loser in every sense.

Championships, winning, graduating, NFL.

Georgia does none of those,

afan, Who are you afan of? UGA was #1 2008 and finished 2007 AP #2. To say they will never be #1 is foolish given the amount of talent in the state. Once UGA gets a great coach then you will see the results. Also I am hearing they are starting the 2012 season in the top 10 although it won’t mean anything unless the team wins some meaningful games. Maybe not number one but not so far away in terms of talent. I don’t think the young man would be a fool, it depends on what he wants. If he wants to win big of course Alabama and an opputunity at the NFL is about equal but Alabama has a slight edge there. In terms of playing time there is no question that UGA would be a smart choice.

GA fanswho gripe about oversigning name one player from bama that was ran off by Saban because he “didn’t pan out on the field” ! oh yeah, thats right you can’t cause as opposed to doing actual research on the subject you let somebody else tell you what to think and formulate your opinions for you. Even worse is that ya”ll are co-signing up north journalists who are attempting to find anything they can to tarnish the SEC’s recent dominanace, ya”ll are a joke, name 1 and I’ll name 20 who never cracked the 2 deep but did their job off the field and in the classroom and stuck around and graduated without a “hardship” which ya’ll always reference but have used yourselves in the past. just to give you a taste of your own medicine of how ridiculous ya’ll sound, Richt ran off Ealey, Richt ran off Logan Gray, Richt forced Ball to take a Medical, Richt is in the process of running off Hutson Mason, No of course he didnt saint Richt wouldnt do such a thing, Difference between Saban and Richt is that Richt is more tolerant of foolishness hence the higher level of roster turn over at Bama than at UGA also when u recruit and develop at a high level like both schools do you will have 2nd stringers capable of starting for other programs and some will choose to leave in order to do so, The biggest actual difference between Richt and Saban, id that Richt will allow a on field stud off field a much longer leash than Saban, this difference in this age with all the attention that the majority of kids that go to either of these schools is huge and many arrive on campus with a sense of entitlement and a me first attitude, with Saban you either get with the program or your gone where with Richt has a track record of giving players numerous chances, Thurman,Ealey,C. King just off the head who chance after chance, maybe thats the difference in the 2 Richt’s Faith calls that he be a forgiving person as it is fundamental to anyone that is as a serious believer as he appears to be,therefor he may be prone to giving players not just second chances, but third and fourth as well, therefore Saban’s lesser tolerance results in more attrition and roster turnover than UGA or any other program for that matter, the discipline and dedication to the program and to their academics is too much to ask for many young men with one track minds on the NFL thus the need for “oversigning” At the end of the day every school, every fall can only have 85 scholarship players suit up for their respective university, so this perceived “huge advantage” is overstated. with Saban its get with the program or get lost, with Richt its get with the program please, pretty please, alright we really need you pretty, pretty, please. That being said both do an elite job in graduation percentage and I believe Saban since he has arrived has had the overwhelming support of administration, alumni, boosters, and fanbase, something I’m not sure Richt has ever had at Georgia, if he did it was shortlived

Bama will sign 45 recruits this year….what rule???? Then kick twenty 3rd team, former 5 star recruits off the team…..then half of them transfer to North Alabama and the other half transfer to South Alabama. Then, Jacksonville State calls Auburn to see if they can get some “transfers.”

Alabama….feeder school for Division II schools

What distruthful BS. You need to look at all the kids that have left the Florida program in the past 3 years and do you own real math. You are such a pansy blogger who spins the truth to fit your poor excuse of a program into a good light. If your weak minded AD would stop wearing ladies undergarments he would understand that to play with the big boys like Arkansas, Alabama and LSU that signing 25 is a good thing. Playing without a full compliment of 85 or close to it is just hurting your program and you know it.

The sad thing about your comments is that the graduation rates at Alabama has increased more since Saban arrived than any other program in the SEC. Even 7 of the players who transferred out have returned to school to graduate with their degree from Alabama.

The problem you have is that UF has not been one of the big boys in three years and getting spanked by Nick Saban for three straight years make your whining that much louder.

Now i feel sorry for the veteran dawg fans who have put up with this crap for much longer than me. The real bozo is the head man Michael Adams who only cares about how much money is being brought in. I fear the AD has no control over the situation unless Mark finds a way to lose 6-7 games next year with that weak schedule. It sucks for now but hopefully by 2020 UGA football will be back as legit contenders.

The embarrassing part is that other fans want the man to stay head coach at UGA forever. Which really show’s how far UGA football has fallen the last 4-5 years. UGA has little to no respect on the national level and that eats me up. Meanwhile Richt is reading books about “energy vampires” and planning which uniforms should be worn. The good part is that he said after last season that he has begun studying “cutting edge football” (whatever that means).

Go Blue, Michigan did an outstanding job this year on the field. I am sure no one predicted a Sugar Bowl victory in Brady Hoke’s first year. He hired two great assistants and the players bought in to his system and they were winners. As of right now I believe Michigan has a top 5 recruiting class, so as a Michigan fan you guys should be excited to see what the future holds with even better players. UGA needs that same type of guy to come in and produce similar results. There are too many resources in the state of Georgia for UGA to accept 9-10 win seasons and losses to all the good teams they play.

I love UGA football but I try to be as realistic and objective as possible. I can tell you that UGA is no Michigan, the only school in the SEC that stands up to Michigan is Alabama in terms of winning, championships, and tradition. UGA is stuck in that second tier as long as Mark Richt is head coach. There are a lot of emotional head cases on this blog from what I can tell, UGA fans on other blogs such as ESPN and leatherhelmet are much more reasonable.

I didn’t day Georgia didn’t have a good defense…….I said Florida did….and that is what I said before the season started. If Florida had had any kind of decent offense this year, I would expect their defensive stats would have been even better…..since it was on the field most of the year and got worn down in several games because the offense could not make first downs and stay on the field on 3rd down. But most of those defensive freshmen and sophs will be back next year….and Muschamp is recruiting a bunch of future defensive stars this year. If Florida gets improved offense next year, which I think they will, Florida will be a very tough team in 2012.
