DB Chaz Elder commits to South Carolina over UGA

DB Chaz Edler picks South Carolina over UGA on ESPN

As expected, Chaz Elder committed to South Carolina over UGA on national TV on Thursday night.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound defensive back from Banneker High School made the announcement during the third quarter of ESPN’s telecast of the Under Armour high school all-star football game.

Sitting with his family members, Elder was asked about his college decision. Elder looked around for a few seconds and was handed a South Carolina baseball cap.

“I like everything about [South Carolina],” Elder said. “I like [how they use] DBs. They put five on the field at the same time. I love it.”

Elder took official visits to South Carolina and UGA. He has yet to make a recruiting trip to Vanderbilt, who was not considered a serious contender, even though Elder listed the Commodores as one of his three finalists.

One final Chaz note: Elder committed to South Carolina but his recruiting may not be over. He is considering taking official visits to Vanderbilt and Arkansas later this month.

RELATED: UGA will get one last shot at Jordan Jenkins, the state’s top uncommitted prospect on Friday. The 6-3, 250-pound defensive end from Harris County High School confirmed to the AJC that he will meet with coaches from UGA and Florida on Friday before he leaves St. Petersburg, Fla., site of the Under Armour game. Now that’s some aggressive recruiting, flying to meet recruits after all-star games. UGA will be represented by assistants Todd Grantham and John Lilly. Jenkins had listed Alabama and Florida as his longtime co-leaders under recently. He will pick between Alabama, UGA, Florida and Tennessee at 7 p.m. Monday on “The Next Class” on Fox Sports South. Said his father: “We’ll see what happens. I’m his father and I’m telling 100 percent that I don’t know where he’s going right now. I know where he said he’s leaning … I’ve got a funny feeling that it’s going to be interesting.” Jenkins is not scheduled to meet with any colleges over the weekend.

OTHER TOP STORIES

Fair or unfairly, UGA caught some criticism for being “too late” to offer some of the state’s top football prospects this year. The Bulldogs may be trying to counter that perception for next year’s class. On Thursday, UGA recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner made a personal appearance to offer one of the state’s top 2013 prospects (click on story link)

Marshall looks fast in the UnderArmor game……our backfield just became one to be feared for the next few years. Add Henry in coming in 2013 or possibly Davis this year and WOWW

1. You jealous he has more than enough talent to commit to a Division I university and you never played anything more than junior high (if you really played at all)? Just congratulate the guy. You sound bitter. Get over it.

2. No, USC doesn’t have much of a past in football, but that means the Gamecocks aren’t living in the past like places like Georgia, Clemson, Notre Dame, FSU, Penn State, etc.

3. Fans obsessing over where high school kids decide where they want to attend college is just weird.

I wonder if Spurrier was honest with Chaz and told him that he would not be around after next season if he does not win the west? All the promises he made Chaz will be gone.

Remember, like it or not, UGA will lose some athletes to our academic standards. Not saying this is the case here. However, too many times if the real story could be told, but won’t be, we will lose some 4 & 5 star players to other SEC schools because we simply can’t get them in. Often it has nothing to do with a perceived drop off in recruiting.

Really?REALLY?

Seems like a good kid but I am not at all heartbroken that we failed to get a commitment from him. He is a “tweener”. Too slow to play in the defensive backfield (4.79 in the 40) and needs to seriously bulk up to play LB. Wish him well either way.

Some of y’all should do your homework before posting. Spurrier just signed a contract extension that keeps him at South Carolina through 2015. And Josh? South Carolina is in the SEC East, not the SEC West. Plus, the Gamecocks just completed their first 11-win season, despite the fact that their star running back was sidelined by knee surgery and they had to replace their starting QB in mid-season.

Chaz – Check out all of the haters from UGA. It’s come down to jealously for UGA fans since they can’t beat SCAR on the field. And they have a super easy schedule to hide behind next yr as well.

Congrats man! You’re signing up w/ **DB U** where SCAR has put out pretty much the best NFL secondary talent in the last few yrs…Chris Culliver, Dunta Robinson, Jonathan Joseph, Captain Munnerlyn, Andre Goodman, and the list goes on from there…

Bama just picked up two more big time recruits…at some point these other guys that are supposedly leaning to the Bama will have to look elsewhere…Tonight they picked up Jones and Collins…The rich keep getting richer…In my opinion the only thing that will bring Bama down, will be some type of scandal…They are loading up…Hopefully some of the guys committed will see they may never see the field and find a team where they can get immediate playing time…If my count is right Bama is up to approximatley 27 commits and still supposedly many left on the board that are Bama leans…Of course still nothing official until NSD..go dawgs…

BigGame did you just list Dunta Robinson as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL?? You have to be joking right? The reason Chaz didn’t want to go to UGA is because UGA was recruiting him as a safety not corner. All the recruiting experts have said that he belongs at safety.

Many who whine about our recruiting don’t realize what a major issue we have as compared to LSU, TN, SC, Bama, Auburn & Ark. Just like we are only 1 of 8 BCS teams that suspend on first time drug abuse (only two in the SEC, us and KY). We do absolutely lose boaderline athletes to other SEC boarder schools to our academic standards. You will NEVER see the AJC report this. Unlike the state of Louisianna, we cannot completelyclose down our boarder.

I do not see how Alabama has all this room. I spoke with an Alabama fan about this on Monday. He said that since they do not have 85 players on scholarship they are allowed to sign enough to reach that limit regardless if they sign more than 25 each year. This doesn’t include early enrolees. I’m starting to wonder if most Alabama staff and fans believe this as well. I argued that you can not sign more than 25 a year and that the EE count towards last year. This guy argued with me and said that they can sign upwards of 35 each year.

I, too, get frustratated with shortening the game with a small lead with lousy play calling – and it is not Bobo. Too many times as opposed to piling it on an opponent, we pull the reigns in and it occasionally bites us in the …….but we still have recruiting blocks other neighboring SEC schools don’t and I’m not saying that is all bad, but it is a tough one when we all want championships and some kid from Georgia goes to Bama, LSU or Auburn.

Tide Roll do not even come in here talking about all Richt had to do was get Greg Blue to talk to him. The kid was determined to play corner and South Carolina was the only school that said he could play corner. UGA was after his as a safety. I trust Tommy Luginbil’s opinion before I trust yours since this is what he does for a living. Still haven’t found out what you do since you ask people questions but fail to answer the ones that are ask of you. Tommy Luginbil and ALL the recruiting experts said he is a safety not a corner.
