One of the state’s top kickers, McEachern High School’s Nicholas St. Germain, committed to South Carolina on the spot on Wednesday.
South Carolina assistant John Butler made an in-home visit and offered a football scholarship from the Gamecocks. St. Germain committed before almost Butler could finish the sentence.
“It was the big offer I was waiting for,” St. Germain told the AJC. “Some of my former teammates are at South Carolina, so I know already some people there. I made unofficial visits to South Carolina for the Florida and Clemson games, and it really felt like home. Finally, there’s the opportunity to play as a freshman.”
St. Germain picked the Gamecocks over offers from Middle Tennessee State, Georgia Southern and South Alabama. His runner-up was Georgia Tech, which had yet to offer but still had him on the recruiting board. Georgia Tech is tight on scholarships, with 14 commitments and projected to sign 17-18 total on Feb. 1.
“I really liked Georgia Tech; I thought they were close to offering at one point but I hadn’t really heard from them in a couple of months,” St. Germain said. “I read about how they offered the kicker from Indianapolis [Ryan Frain], who decided to stick with Illinois. I figured after that happened and I didn’t hear back, they weren’t going to come back for me.
“But it worked out for the best. South Carolina had shown me a lot more interest, and they were kind of upfront with my situation. If Georgia Tech had offered me, too, I would’ve had to step back and think about my decision. They didn’t, though. It’s all good. I’m happy to be a Gamecock.”
What if Georgia Tech decides to offer? “Once I commit, I’m committed. That goes for even if I committed to Georgia Southern or a place like that. It’s a done deal now. That’s why I waited so long to make the right decision. It’s sealed with South Carolina, unless they back out on the offer, which I doubt will happen.”
This past season at McEachern, St. Germain was 11 of 17 on field goals and converted all 52 PAT attempts. He also booted 59 of 74 kickoffs into the end zone. One his current McEachern teammates, defensive end Darius English, is also committed to South Carolina.
What about Georgia Tech? The Yellow Jackets are scouting kicker Ryan Norton of Garden City, N.Y. You can see his video here.
