Nicholas St. Germain commits to South Carolina Gamecocks

Nicholas St. Germain wanted to go to South Carolina or Georgia Tech -- and the Gamecocks offered first (Special)

One of the state’s top kickers, McEachern High School’s Nicholas St. Germain, committed to South Carolina on the spot on Wednesday.

South Carolina assistant John Butler made an in-home visit and offered a football scholarship from the Gamecocks. St. Germain committed before almost Butler could finish the sentence.

“It was the big offer I was waiting for,” St. Germain told the AJC. “Some of my former teammates are at South Carolina, so I know already some people there. I made unofficial visits to South Carolina for the Florida and Clemson games, and it really felt like home. Finally, there’s the opportunity to play as a freshman.”

St. Germain picked the Gamecocks over offers from Middle Tennessee State, Georgia Southern and South Alabama. His runner-up was Georgia Tech, which had yet to offer but still had him on the recruiting board. Georgia Tech is tight on scholarships, with 14 commitments and projected to sign 17-18 total on Feb. 1.

“I really liked Georgia Tech; I thought they were close to offering at one point but I hadn’t really heard from them in a couple of months,” St. Germain said. “I read about how they offered the kicker from Indianapolis [Ryan Frain], who decided to stick with Illinois. I figured after that happened and I didn’t hear back, they weren’t going to come back for me.

“But it worked out for the best. South Carolina had shown me a lot more interest, and they were kind of upfront with my situation. If Georgia Tech had offered me, too, I would’ve had to step back and think about my decision. They didn’t, though. It’s all good. I’m happy to be a Gamecock.”

What if Georgia Tech decides to offer? “Once I commit, I’m committed. That goes for even if I committed to Georgia Southern or a place like that. It’s a done deal now. That’s why I waited so long to make the right decision. It’s sealed with South Carolina, unless they back out on the offer, which I doubt will happen.”

This past season at McEachern, St. Germain was 11 of 17 on field goals and converted all 52 PAT attempts. He also booted 59 of 74 kickoffs into the end zone. One his current McEachern teammates, defensive end Darius English, is also committed to South Carolina.

What about Georgia Tech? The Yellow Jackets are scouting kicker Ryan Norton of Garden City, N.Y. You can see his video here.

Good luck at USC, young man. The stats didn’t mention field goal distance. Does anyone know St. Germain’s longest FG?

Dang, with it being so incredibly obvious that we NEED a kicker, why the hell didn’t we pursue him? As soon as the kid from Indianapolis turned Tech down, Johnson and his staff should have been knocking St Germain’s door down trying to get him. I sure hope they have somebody else on the list, but we cannot go on with the kickers we have.

11 0f 17 on field goals in high school?! Sounds like the Blair Walsh “Error” that ended this year at UGA! And SC is thinking NC? How’s the KoolAid in Columbia?? You can’t even win the SEC East but once every 20 years. If we could have kicked field goals, we would have beat SC and M. State. Hate to see our field goal kicker go out with the worst senior season in decades at UGA. We will be back to win the SEC East and build on our first half against LSU! GO DAWGS!!!

Good for you Nicholas! Tech did not recruit you as they should have and you made the best choice for you. Here’s hoping you get a chance for 7 or 8 PATS and at lease 1 or 2 FGs against the Dwags next year! Besides UGA fans have difficulty with spelling and that will save you the embarrassment of looking in the stands and seeing your name mis-spelled.

Rambo, I’m extremely happy to be a Tech fan. Thanks to you Dwag.

BigDawg….what was the S.C./UGA score last two years. And what is this word you are using “IF”, that’s a big. big, word. And yeah I know you think you had the better team, When S.C. defense keeps scoring, UGA keeps getting the ball back, and you still didn’t score enough points….please don’t forget, the defensive points in a game also count. Ph yeah I forgot, you beat the crap out of LSU first two quarters, but what about the second half?
And yeah you won the SEC east, but only one team beat every team in the east….and it wasn’t UGA.

Rambo, since your post was more-or-less classy for you, I will respond in kind. YES, that loss in El Paso hurt, especially since I blame it on stupid play calling in the 4th quarter. But honestly, I would think you would be hurting even more, because the mutts SHOULD have won that game even at the end, and you blew it. I hate the final results of our bowl game and our season as a whole, but since we still did better than anybody predicted, I will get over it. You on the other hand have to face the fact that your beloved mutts did not live up to expectations and lost to every good team they played.

I’m not upset at all that Tech didn’t offer him first, however I will be VERY upset if Tech doesn’t land a good placekicker before next season. AND a special teams coach!! How many games do they have to lose because of piss-poor special teams play before the staff realizes that they are every bit as important as the offense or defense?? I mean come on, you want me to believe that there aren’t any decent soccer players on campus who might be willing to give Football a try??

BigDawg and RamboDog, at least your team blows a 16 point lead to a ranked team, we cant hold a lead to a 7-5 because our coach dosent give the ball to Orwin Smith, that led GT in rushing the first 6 games !!!! We will never win another bowl game with this coach or his “uncle Al’s ” 3-4 defense !!!

BigDawg, you continue to show your stupidity. How many times has a Spurrier coached team beat the mutts? What has the NFL got to do with anything? I can’t remember now how many years the SEC has had two divisions, but Spurrier took over a NOTHING program at USC and has made it a major one. Even though your beloved mutts won the SEC LEAST this year, USC did last year and beat the mutts both of those years. You have absolutely nothing to crow about when it comes to talking about Steve Spurrier. And, by the way, I am not an SC fan; I just know a good football program when I see one.
