Georgia will need a strong finish over the next six weeks to maintain its record-breaking streak in football recruiting. The Bulldogs are the nation’s only team to place in the top 10 of the Rivals.com recruiting rankings each year since 2002.

Georgia has struggled some in assembling this year’s recruiting class, with the team’s 0-2 start and speculation over Mark Richt’s future as contributing factors.

The Bulldogs dropped back to No. 22 in this year’s Rivals rankings before bumping up to No. 16 after recently landing 5-star tailback Keith Marshall of Raleigh, N.C.

Here are five of Georgia’s top remaining targets:

RB Todd Gurley (247Sports.com)

RB Todd Gurley (247Sports.com)

Todd Gurley, RB, Tarboro, N.C.: The 6-foot-1, 210-pounder is one of the Southeast’s hottest prospects after leading his team to the state championship (242 yards rushing and four touchdowns) and winning MVP honors at the Shrine Bowl all-star game for players from North Carolina and South Carolina (119 yards and two TDs). While his buddy Marshall is known for his raw speed, Gurley is a big and physical runner who also has respectable speed —   he ran track for Team USA in the 110-meter hurdles last summer in Europe. North Carolina and Georgia are rumored to be the frontunners for Gurley, who also has Clemson and N.C. State on his short list. Marshall, who took an official visit to Georgia the same time as Gurley in September, has gone public with his intentions to recruit his buddy to play with him in the Bulldogs’ offensive backfield.

Josh Harvey-Clemons (AJC)

S-LB Josh Harvey-Clemons (AJC)

Josh Harvey-Clemons, LB-S, Lowndes: The 6-5, 200-pounder is an AJC Super 11 selection and one of the state’s most versatile athletes. Both Georgia and Florida are recruiting Harvey-Clemons at outside linebacker, while Alabama projects him to play wide receiver. Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo is in charge of recruiting Harvey-Clemons, who will visit Georgia on Jan. 20. “Bobo has done a good job in South Georgia with the last couple of recruiting classes, and it looks like this one might come down to Georgia and Florida,” said Rusty Mansell, National Recruiting Analyst for 247Sports.

DE Jordan Jenkins (AJC)

DE-LB Jordan Jenkins (AJC)

Jordan Jenkins, DE-LB, Harris County: There may not be another top prospect who Georgia has made bigger strides in recent months than Jenkins, another AJC Super 11 selection. The 6-3, 250-pound Jenkins nearly canceled his official visit to Georgia on two separate occasions due to speculation about Richt before finally making the recruiting trip last month. Jenkins and his family are especially high on Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and spent most of the visit with him. Alabama has been the longtime frontrunner for Jenkins but Georgia has made advances. “Ever since making that visit, in talking with Jordan or a family member, Georgia has been mentioned,” Mansell said. “Georgia hasn’t given up on Jordan. They are recruiting him as hard as anybody. Right now, I still see Alabama as the team to beat, but Georgia has made a lot of progress in recent weeks.”

OL Avery Young (247sports)

OL Avery Young (247sports.com)

Avery Young, OL, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.: The 6-6, 270-pounder is the nephew of former Georgia standout Thomas Davis and lived in the Atlanta area when he was younger. The Bulldogs are determined to sign six offensive linemen, and have four committed, with Young the top remaining priority. Young has already taken official visits to Georgia, Alabama, Auburn and Florida. He may visit Clemson or Oklahoma in January. “Avery is one of the top uncommitted prospects in the Southeast at any position; after seeing him play, he can pass block as well as anybody,” Mansell said. “He told me last week that Georgia and Auburn were his top two, and then [Auburn offensive coordinator] Gus Malzhan left for Arkansas State. I would think that would open up a little room for Georgia. Florida will be in the mix once they hire an offensive coordinator, and Alabama has been down there to talk to him in person. He’s definitely going to wait to announce until signing day, but Georgia will definitely be in it for him.”

WR Cordarrelle Patterson (247Sports0

WR Cordarrelle Patterson (247Sports.com)

Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Hutchinson, Kan.: The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder is considered the No. 1 overall prospect out of the junior-college ranks. He’s an explosive playmaker, returning six kickoffs for touchdowns and setting several offensive records at Hutchinson. “He is a game-changer, and he can play immediately — wherever he chooses,” Mansell said. “It looks like a Georgia-vs.-Tennessee battle, and Arkansas could come into it.” Patterson’s quarterback from high school, Justin Worley, plays at Tennessee, which may factor into the decision. Patterson was going to be a mid-year transfer but will wait until the summer to enroll in his new school.

What about Georgia Tech? Check back next week for who is on the wishlist for the Yellow Jackets.

  • Two Stephenson High School seniors are looking for new schools after coaching changes — OL Nicholas Gibbons, who had been committed to Memphis, and RB TJ Moon, who was pledged to Florida Atlantic. Both were recruited by the previous college coaching staffs, and the new coaches “wanted to move in a different direction,” according to Stephenson assistant Corey Johnson.
  • Basketball: Georgia’s 2013 class of prospects is nowhere near as deep and talented as this year’s crop, but one of the best is Brannen Greene, a 6-foot-7 junior from Mary Persons High School. Greene committed to Kansas over Louisville, Ohio State, UConn, Memphis and Florida State on Tuesday, according to multiple media outlets. Greene is averaging 24 points and 14 rebounds for Mary Persons this season as a junior.
  • Cross country: Brookwood’s Caroline Kissel has committed to Georgia Tech. She is a seven-time individual region champion in track and cross country, and has the third-fastest time in 1,600 meters in school history.

I read an article on the ESPN web site, and they have UGA sitting as the 7th ranked team now, since they signed Marshall and the offensive JUCO lineman. They dropped Auburn out of the top ten, after the 5 star RB switched to Alabama after they had a verbal from him. They also don’t have LSU, right now ahead of UGA. They have Texas as number 1 and I believe Alabama as number three.
There sure seems to be a lot of difference between one rating service in another. I think UGA will be just fine, if we pick up one more RB and two more OL’s. They will have done the most important thing in recruiting and that is filling your needs and in addition, creating some depth for the team.

If we can get Avery Young and keep the OL we already have, this could be the best OL signing class we have ever had. That would make us almost unstoppable on offense in about 3 years.

Comparing CMR to any other coach in the SEC, you will realize that CMR is the class of college football. He won’t oversign you or step over you if you need CPR (Saban), he won’t buy a qb (Auburn), he has coordinators (unlike FLA).

UGA is building something special. 2012 is going to be a great year.

Gurley is very underrated by some, one recruiting service moved him up to one of the top 50 players regardless of position, in the country. He ran track meets in Europe last year because he’s one of the nation’s top track athletes and he’s over 200 pounds. He had over 240 yards and willed his team to victory in the state championship and was the MVP last week in the North Carolina/South Carolina all star game. Gurley had about 120 yards and a couple of touchdowns in that game and had a 96 yard run called back. He is big, and fast but plays with passion. His intangibles are like Tebow.

Did Jenkins ever learn how to tackle? I saw him play in three games for Harris County, in two of them he got in the backfield just fine, then he looked like he grabbed the running back around the waist, then began to play ring around the rosie with him, next thing you know the running back is running down the sideline for a big gain. I have a family member on the Harris County team, and has always said he thought Bama was the team to beat for Jenkins. One of Jenkins family members said that she thought UGA had a good chance to get him. He is one who wants a lot of attention, though.

A. Young is a Georgia lean. Josh Harvey-Clemmons is a Florida lean (Bobo and Grantham are working hard on him). Possible to get Gurley-North Carolina is making him their No. 1 priority. Don’t think we will make up the difference with Jenkins. There are some other teams committs that are considering flipping because of the turmoil at those schools (Auburn).

I like that the Dawgs are swinging for the fences for these guys, but there are many under the radar lunch pail type guys, who are 3 star who with coaching and the weight room could turn in to 4 stars guys on campus( see David Pollock, 3 star fullback turned into a 2 time 5 star All American). I know these guys aren’t sexy for the mags, but they usually have big hearts, great attitude and work ethics.
Would like to see a few of them in Athens.

You have to have the Big Dawgs up front if you want to be an SEC contender. Given time, AM has picked apart defenses. When he is harassed the outcome has not been good. I hope we continue to see the fire and determination from coaches and players after the contract extensions are signed. Ga has no more than two years with Grantham before the multi million $ head coaching contract comes calling. I would love to see all these young men end up at Ga. Go Dawgs!

More of the same….the recruits look better anywhere outside of Georgia. Richt if you worked half as hard at contacting and recruiting the juniors in Georgia, you know, you might be surprised that these kids would love to play for UGA. Instead, you let the Alabamas, Aurburns and Floridas walk right in and sign just about anyone the want because you are locked in on some kid in North Carolina, South Florida or in Memphis. This is the reason a few years ago you had 1 QB on the roster after a kid left, this year you had 1 RB and 3 yrs ago 1 WR. Recruit GEORGIA 1st Richt….then you wouldn’t have to use some silly moniker like Dream Team to show that you’re recruiting the best every year.

The inability of our offense cost the melt down of the LSU game in the second half, and it was the OC, who came out with a 180 pound fourth string RB and running between the tackles against the number one defense in the country….and handing the ball back to LSU every time with great field position. WTF.

Basketball: I think Fox is a good teaching coach and game-day coach but we are losing way too many recruits from Georgia. If he wants to keep his job, he needs to fire his recruiting coach and hire someone who can recruit in Georgia. It’s sad to see a state that has so much basketball talent leave the state for other schools.

The reason UGA can’t offer as many juniors as Alabama or LSU is that UGA doesn’t over-recruit. If CMR has 15 slots open, he takes 15 commitments. Because of that, the UGA staff can’t afford to offer a lot of kids early because they don’t know how things will shape up. I am not saying it is illegal to over-recruit; the NCAA has done very little to stop it. I am simply saying UGA follows a different model and loses out on a lot of recruits who feel they were ‘dissed by Georgia’ because they weren’t offered early. Unless we get an early signing period or some regulation of over-recruiting, this will continue to happen.

Check, basis for ad-nauseum reference in this blog.

What I do not get is when you look at the ACTUAL rivals.com rankings, its simply not true.

Avery Young would be my choice, but we have a lot of OL commited.

Patterson is a one and done, so it won’t break my heart to lose out on him.

Jeinkens would be great, but I feel like we have some other players similar to his skill set.

I know we really need Gurley, but … well no buts. I think Gurley is really close to the top of this list.

I just don’t see any available OC’s out there as good and as experienced as him. He is an offensive coach and a great recruiter, and he will keep the same system at Florida. Florida is also very strong with Harvey-Clemons. Jenkins is strong with Bama, but the Florida coaches are making a big push for him as well. Curley, I believe, will end up at North Carolina. OFFENSIVE LINE DEPTH? All Richt and Bobo had to do was sign GEORGIA NATIVES: JR. Left tackle JASON PEACOCK, from Milledgeville, who used to serve cokes at SANFORD STADIUM for gosh sakes, and is now starting for Bobby Petrino and the RAZORBACKS. JR. Left Guard CHANCE WARMACK, from Atlanta WESTLAKE, who’s high school postion coach was former Uga offensive lineman RESTY BEADLES!, and will be a 4 year starter for ALABAMA!, and Soph. Right Tackle, JUJUAN JAMES, from N. Gwinnett who starts for Tenneesee and last year was named Freshman All American. These players, ALL FROM THE STATE OF GEORGIA, would have allowed Richt and Bobo to move CHRIS BURNETTE to his natural position, Center, and start KENARIOUS GATES at Right Guard. Instead, you fools are talking about Theus, a true freshman from a private school in Florida at Left tackle (instead of Peacock), Dallas Lee at Left Guard (instead of GATES!), and incredibly, redshirt fr. Andrews, from yet another private school, at Center (instead of Burnette), AND equally as incredible, Dantzler at right tackle (instead of James!). Tampa Gator, I’m sure that the recruits are all waiting for the famous Brian White, the former OC coordinator at Wisconsin to call. Wisconsin being such a powerhouse is very attractive to these recruits, I’m sure. You got to be kidding me. Florida is a joke with that spitting, slobbering, yelling aand screaming coach you all have that even Weis had to take a job that sucks just to get away from coach mustrant.

Mr. Old Boy, please define what you mean by the term “over recruit”. If you really believe that is the reason that other schools out recruit Georgia in Georgia, please do not answer calls from 1-800’s cause you will pretty much buy anything. Why do rival fans beg for Georgia to sign Richt to a long term contract? Think about that just for a moment. I know, Saban cheats, Bama will be on probation, Saban oversigns, Saban runs players off, Saban has 75 commits every year, blah blah blah. By the way, what sort of rule would you consider passing? If you do pass some sort of rule, make sure Richt gets a copy. It seems he does not read the rules too close.

Florida will flounder for two more years with their new HC that loves his trantrums. The kids that Florida recruits, will not play for a guy that jumps up and down and screams and grabs their head gear. TIme will tell. If he does not work ou in 3, then a new coach will arrive and it will take him at leas 2 years to build his squad. Overall, FLoirda is in the tnake for at least 3-4 years.

SC? Their stellar D coach left em and Spurrier is too old. Lattmore needs to protects his wheels and their 2 or 3 really great playefrs will leave them for the NFL soon enough. SC is toast and their day has come and gone.
UT is in the tank for a good while. DaRick is having fun running up his eligibility to turn pro in one year now. UT is toast.

Josh Harvey-Clemons is who we need. I have watched the kid for two years on television and he has made major impacts each and every time I have seen him play. Let him play both sides of the ball, and figure out where he is the most dangerous, and then we know what works out best. He is tall, athletic, and lean, making him a must get for the Dawgs. He is a must get in my eyes, with Gurley in a close second.

Rivals recruiting is a joke. They lean heavy in bias to Florida and Alabama. They have from their inception. Some years are worse than others.
Here is a good article about their bias;
http://leatherhelmetblog.com/2011-articles/december/socrates-updates-uga-recruiting-20dec11.html

Also, I think the whole UGA finishing in the top 10 recruiting so many years in a row is a lie and an effort by the Floriduh and Bama homers at Rivals to make recruits think that UGA can’t do anything with great recruits. Rivals is dirty dirty dirty.

Bubba Mutt – you need a lesson in recruiting. FIRST – the out of staters come into Georgia and offer early and often to everyone. If they think there is a chance they offer. Then they oversign or turn the commitment away if they end up not being good enough. Watch South Carolina – who gave up 5 – 6 scholarships because of NCAA issues yet they have 20 committs already. If you have a limit of 25 then what are they to do if others commit?

SECOND – CMR does not oversign. He is a little slower in certain offer situations and so when someone changes their mind or does not want to come to UGA that has an offer and got one early then that causes revaluations and offers continue to go out.

THIRD – Do not assume the talent in Georgia is always the BEST talent just because it is abundant. I would gladly trade losing Dillion Lee this year and even Jenkins if we get Foster and Nkemdiche
next year.

FOURTH – Not all kids that are in Georgia are from Georgia and have family in Georgia so they would not have the ties in Georgia. Foster for example is from Alabama so it is not that big of deal if he is an Alabama fan and would go to Alabama. That does not mean the coaches did not recruit him hard and do what they could but sometimes that is not enough.

Rivals ranks 23 4 star and above players in the state of Georgia. 3 are commited to Bama and 3 to UGA.

Rivals ranks 12 4 star and above players in the state of Alabama. 4 are committed to Bama and 0 to UGA.

Very good chance the top two ranked players in the entire nation will be from the state of Georgia. One is commited to Bama and the other is considered a heavy lean.

If UGA would lock down the boarders they would have a top 5 class every year. But Saban will not allow that.

There are 120 Division 1-A (FBS) football programs. After this years champion is crowned, there will be a total of 7 schools that have won the national championship over the past 10 seasons, which is less than 6% of the D1 schools. Statistically, each school has a 0.8% chance annually, and based on historical data a 5.8% chance over ten years of finishing #1. Obviously not a great marker for success, since by that measure 119 schools annually and 113 over ten years would be “failures”. If UGA finished in the top 10 recruting rankings, then a top 10 finish might be a better marker (although playing against one or more national championship calibre teasms annually would tend to add to the loss totals and thus decrease the odds of a top 10 finish), and there were six top-10 finishes over that ten year time frame. Some underachieving, certainly, but still pretty successful.

It would be great to see UGA sign all of them but who knows. These kids need to decide where they will fit in the best and build their future. Sometimes football isn’t the only consideration. What’s wonderful for all of them is they have a chance to attend the Univ. of their choice, get an education while playing football, and possibly prepare for the NFL. They should definitely be able to prepare for life.

Dawg fans know we were thin on the O line last year, and three starters are out of eligibility. Its a definite area of need. That said, we need people to compete at every position. I don’t see depth at FB and I wonder about TE. Who will push the DBs next year and Tyson is gone. Do we have the depth to be 2-3 deep at DE? Who will step up?

Recruiting rankings don’t impress me. Let’s see it on the field. Why last year’s class was so good was so many stepped in and showed it on the field. I don’t remember a year with so many true freshman contributing.

The discrepancy in the rankings from one site to another is because ESPN has UGA in the top 10 because they still honor the commitments of JUCO players Jalen Fields and Lonnie Outlaw even though an article came out stating that they would sign elsewhere. Scout.com has UGA at #26 currently because they are leaving out those two in addition to leaving out Kent Turene who signed with UGA last year but could not get past the NCAA clearinghouse. Rivals.com is the only site that gives UGA credit for all of its current commitments and UGA is ranked #16 currently so there rating is likely the most accurate. Also of course there is bias in these recruiting rankings everyone has there own agenda. I remember a few years back a kid from Texas came out of nowhere and jumped to five star status based on his senior film. The expert analyst only get to cover the guys with the most hype. Hence so many 2 and 3 star players turning out to be much better than advertised.

Believe it or not, there are some kids from GA that just want to play out of state, and for some reason, choose to play in that Godforsaken state of AL.

Hopefully an article is coming to the AJC shortly regarding the class shown by CMR.. While some of you are bashing the team and the man, take note that UGA has been hit with NCAA minor infractions. CMR took money out of his own pay to enhance the salaries of various UGA coaches that were either not given a raise or not compensated what the head coach thought they were worth. This integrity shown by our coach is the reason kids like these 5 will gice the DAWGS a hard look. To the negative posters, Merry Christmas and although you won’t admit it, you would much rather work for a guy like CMR than any other coach out there. CLASS ACT!!!

Tampa Gator,

Can Brian White throw the football? Can Brian White run with the football? Can Brian White catch a football? Can Brian White block? My point is I don’t care how great a coach you are…if you don’t have the players forget about it. If big Charlie can’t do it nobody can. Rumor is that Weiss didn’t want another bad year on his resume because he knew next year was gonna be worse. So he took the first train out. Don’t look now but Meyer has already taken two coaches and I hear about to take Driskell. Does Meyer still have his office at UF?

UGA Insider……

Thank goodness you are a UGA insider and not a FLA insider.

Brian White can teach how to throw a football (but he usually leaves that to the QB coach). He can teach how to run the football (very well….since he was the RB coach and OC at Wisconsin and then the RB coach this year at Florida). He can teach how to catch the football (but he usually leaves that to the WR coach). And he can teach how to block (but he usually leaves that to the OL coach). But what he really does well…..I am hearing……is coordinate all that very well.

-Driskell is not going anywhere (very happy at Florida and will fight for the starting QB postion with Brissett next spring and summer).. Meyer has his spread QB at OSU….and he is a soph.

-Weis was making $850,000 as the OC at Florida, with a 2-year contract. He is being paid $2,500,000 a year with perks at Kansas with a 5-year deal. That is why he left Florida…..ONLY. Any OC who wanted to be a head coach again would have taken that deal. No other rumors about Weis. He was very happy and Muschamp was very happy…..just a deal he could not refuse. But you can post and believe anything you want…..and you do.

-Meyer tried to get 3 football coaches from Florida and they ALL turned him down….White, Hill, and the special teams coach. The S&C coach left and that was expected (he has followed Meyer everywhere). Two other front office people went to OSU as well…..but they were not coaches and not under any type of football related contract.

So…..maybe you should keep your “INSIDER” leaks to the domain of GEORGIA FOOTBALL…..as it might be slightly more accurate.

UGA Insider….

And……..Muschamp is so disappointed in Brissett and Driskell and their potential at QB…..that he decided to NOT recruit another QB in this year’s class. Brissett and Driskell are enormously talented….and only need experience….to become very good QBs in the SEC. Both will push each other to become just that. I expect one will take a major step up next year and lead the Gators offense to major improvement…..and with the defense that Florida has…..they only need minor improvement to go from 6-6 to competing for the East title again. They are at least another year from competing with Bama and LSU for the SEC title again.

Florida and Tennessee are in the “down” portion of the football cycle. It happens at all schools, so Georgia needs to capitalize on this and sign as many of these kids as possible. We should land at least 3 of the 5. Grantham has made drastic improvements in the D and this is paying huge dividends on the recruiting trail.

Most likely, late in the 2012 season, Dooley will be fired, and Wilcox will be named interim HC. Even most 18 year-old kids can see there is no future at UT, at least not with Dooley at the helm. And, everyone has to start over when the new HC arrives.

Muschamp is finding out quickly that being a HC at Florida requires much more than just recruiting top athletes. He needs to develop linemen quickly on both sides of the ball. Perhaps he should spend more time on that and less time making smart ass comments about his alma mater. You only get away with that when you WIN.

If it is coming out of Orlando….then it must be true…..Driskell is a goner.

I guess that is why he is gettting a lot of reps during bowl practice at QB…..because he is leaving. Why would a kid leave Florida if he has a 50/50 shot at being the starting QB for the Florida Gators next year. Get real.

That Columbus guy is funny. Best joke I have heard all day. If UGA does the impossible and sign all 5 does that equal a national championship under Richt? Do you think any of these guys will be any better than Matthew Stafford, Aj Green, Knowshon Moreno, Thomas Davis, David Pollack etc… who were all CMR recruits? If not then I’m not sure how much really will change about Georgia football other than Grantham’s new defense and Will Friends offensive line. Mike Bobo is still the offensive coordinator and Bryan Mclendon who was a WR in college is the running backs coach.

I just think it’s funny that the AL fans seem to think they “own” the state of GA because they take a few recruits each year. I guess that’s what the Florida State fans probably say about stealing AL for some of it’s talented players. They seem to own LA.
