Could Adam Griffith help Alabama with kicking this year?

Adam Griffith, the Calhoun High School kicker who is committed to Alabama, could probably help out the Crimson Tide this year.

Alabama suffered a 9-6 loss to LSU in the regular season after Cade Foster and Jeremy Shelley failed to score on four of six field-goal attempts.

Griffith, who kicked a field goal to win the Saturday’s Class AA state championship for Calhoun High School, admitted it was tough watching Alabama’s loss to LSU. He will sign with Alabama in February and be eligible to play next season.

“Of course, I wish I could’ve helped the team in that game,” Griffith said. “The kicker, Cade Foster, he had a bad night. But those are hard kicks to make, especially when it’s cold outside and they are long field goals. I was nervous watching him. I don’t know.”

Griffith has been a kicking machine at Calhoun. He booted around 65 of 80 kickoffs into the end zone this season. He has a career-long field goal of 55 yards. In the state championship, Griffith kicked four field goals, including the game-winner on Calhoun’s first offensive play from scrimmage in overtime. After Buford turned the ball over on a turnover, Calhoun coach Hal Lamb didn’t take any chances – sending in Griffith to kick a 32-yarder on first down.

“I guess Coach was confident in me,” Griffith said. “I wasn’t thinking about anything. I just knew I had to make the kick, so I went out there and made it. I tried not to think about how big of a kick it was. I just thought about kicking an extra point, and that it was no big deal.”

Griffith has been a pretty big deal in recruiting circles, picking up early offers from Alabama and LSU, eventually deciding on the Crimson Tide last January. “I get a bunch of letters but I don’t even want to look at them,” Griffith said. “I was told Georgia was about to offer me, but then they ended up offering some kid from Florida. I mean, I didn’t really care because I didn’t want to go there anyways. I wanted to go to Alabama. I just feel like that’s the best place for me.”

Here’s what Rusty Mansell, the National Recruiting Analyst for 247Sports, had to say about the state championship star:

“Adam has the strongest leg I have ever seen since I have been covering high school football. Not only can he kick it a mile, he kicks it higher than anyone I have ever covered. I think the thing that separates Adam from other kickers I have seen that are highly rated is that Adam has already shown he can perform in the clutch. Last year in the dome against Buford and this year making those two kicks in the 4th quarter were big time. I filmed Adam kicking a 60-yard FG with no tee and he made it on the first try. Adam will kick in the NFL one day if he continues the path he is on. He is a tremendous young man and very humble about his abilities.”

Good luck to the kid. He made his choice and that is fine.
UGA has a pretty decent kicker coming from Cartersville next year so I think we will be alright in that area.

Anybody notice how much wider the hash markers were for the high school kids. No wonder the pros seldom miss. It’s just a long extra point with no angles to deal with.

    @just the truth

Here is some truth: the NFL hash marks are tighter but the field is much wider. It negates your point. However, it doesn’t prevent pro kickers from missing easily make-able field goals. How do you explain a guy kicking 60-70 yard field goals in high school but can’t kick 50 yarders in college? There is no explanation other than mental.

no cuts necessary, Jacket. Since Ohio State gets two coaching staffs, we thought we’d ask for another 10 scholarships.

The hash marks are wider in high school, but the goal posts are also wider. In college, the hash marks stay wide, but the goal posts are narrowed to the same width as the pros.

Kid looks to be a great kicker. Good luck.

Kid is definitely a great kicker for his size, about 5′ 10″ 170 lbs.

Marshal Morgan the Dawgs kicker from Florida has very similar stats, but about 6′ 2″ and 195 lbs. Will definitely have more power from 30 yard line.

Congrats to both as they both got schollys to were they wanted to go to school.

Why is Richt the Communist Propagandist offering some bozo from his native Florida instead of this talented kid from the State of Georgia?

We need to fire Richt. What is it with this little Communist? His propaganda seems to mesmerize everyone when he don’t know a thing about coaching college football.

How long must this BS go on?

This kid is obviously put off because UGA didn’t offer him when it was natural to do so….

You must be as high as your chosen handle would imply. How choosing someone from another state could in any way indicate communism on CMR’s part is beyond the understanding of anyone with a brain that functions. From your writing it is clear that you also do not understand what the word “Propagandist” even means. If you can find a dictionary you should try to look it up–that should keep you busy for a few hours. YOU are henceforth forbidden to use “dawg” in any handle you post with. To think of you as a Dawg is shameful. Clinically you would be classified somewhere between moron and idiot (a couple more words you should look up). More commonly you will be classified as a Fraking Gooberhead (but only on your best day). Now, back in your hole.

Douglas…you are probably somewhat right about Bama being average if not for Georgia players. Here is the bad part…they have one of the two best teams in the country because THEY DO RECRUIT BORDER STATES WELL. Anyone getting the picture….any yes, Georgia needs to have more Dream Teams, not just one every once in a while. If we are LUCKY we might only have FOUR TEAMS IN THE SEC finish ahead of us in recruiting.

State is blessed with two great kickers this year. In addition to Griffith, we also have Austin Hardin, who kicked a 59 yard game winner last year. He is ranked No. 1 in country by ESPN, and will play in Under Armor All American Game. And he is going to Florida. Guess we don’t want home grown stars on UGA’s kicking team the next 4 years. After all, kicking game is not important!

Douglas…I hate to kill a good argument but the fact is, I can count 23kids this year who contributed significantly to BAMA who were from the state of GA. Warmack, Hanks and Menzie. I can count 2 who contributed in 2009 when we won the NCSNC and those are Hanks and Washington.

There is no secret that the state of GA has great talent who Saban will make a run at. We wont get nearly as many as GA gets but we will get one or 2 you guys want and next year we may pull the top 2 players in the state who will both be top 5 in the country. If we win with that, I am ok with it. You need to get the best players and if we have 2 from GA or FL or MS or TN or whereever cool. Its not like UGA is only playing guys from the state of GA.
