AJC Super 11 LB Dillon Lee (AJC photo)
Will Alabama LB commit Dillon Lee make a surprise official visit to UGA this weekend?
It’s one of the hottest topics on message boards, and there are legitimate reasons for the speculation:
The AJC Super 11 linebacker from Buford High School is the younger brother of UGA offensive lineman Dallas Lee. The younger Lee has gone with his parents (both longtime UGA fans) to just about every Bulldogs game this season to see his brother play, even after Dallas broke his leg in October.
While at the games, Dillon has had the chance to build a relationship with UGA’s coaches, including Mark Richt. For the record, Dillon says he’s committed to Alabama.
This is UGA’s biggest recruiting weekend of the year. Will Lee make an appearance in Athens? His mother told the AJC on Thursday that it won’t be decided until after Buford plays in the Class AA state championship on Friday.
“It’s not set yet,” she said. “Georgia called today and will see them at the Georgia Dome on Friday. We will look know more after the game.”
Lee is staying focused on helping Buford win its fifth championship in a row. You can watch the game at 4:30 p.m. Friday on Georgia Public Television

“I’m still kind of bitter,” said former Alabama linebacker Chuck Kirschman, who took a medical scholarship last year. Mr. Kirschman said Mr. Saban encouraged him to accept the scholarship because of a back problem that he believes he could have played through. “It’s a business,” Mr. Kirschman said. “College football is all about politics. And this is a loophole in the system.”
Sounds like someone who is real happy with his former team. However, if Nick Saban can look a kid in the eye and say that he is going to stick with him through thick and thin, that is between him, the recruit, and God. If people want to say it is not oversigning, great. I personally hope that he is giving these kids a square deal, because I would be pretty upset if someone sat in my living room and lied to me and my kid.

SECisFootball, Sorry man but when these players come out and say their was nothing medically wrong with them and the coach gave them two options, off the team or medical scholarship they chose the scholarship but they were not happy about it. The NCAA is currently looking into addressing this problem with new rules but does not want to prevent kids who are actually injured and unable to from getting the opportunity to finsh school. Saban abuses this process. It is well documented. The NCAA frowns upon it but has yet to step in and do something about it. It is not a UGA excuse, it is just a fact. Some coaches push the rules to the limit. Some don’t. In the end the coach has to live by his decisions. I don’t think Saban has a problem sleeping at night. After reading the article about him stepping over one of his own players who sick on the field so he could get to his office when he was in Miami, I am not sure he is human and even needs to sleep. But he is a winner, and to many that is all that matters. Unlike some of the Dawg fans who post, I love our coach. He is a good man and a good coach. I think he works hard to help the kids he coaches and make them better people. In the end, that is more important than a game played on Saturday.

I agree with what you posted. This is why I am 100% opposed to letting any high school player commit until after their senior year of high school. The signing day should be moved to March or April unless you qualify for early admittance in January. Then you should be able to commit early so you can start class in January.
Georgia was 6-7 last year and Dillon didn’t know if Georgia could turn it around and with Georgia not pursuing him it was a no brainier for him to commit to Alabama , a team that wanted him. This young man has extreme integrity and if he knew in may, the date he committed to Alabama, that Georgia was going to turn thing’s around and the new linebacker coach was going to recruit him and want him badly, he would have not committed to Alabama.
What Dillon’s parent’s need to do is sit him down and tell him if he want’s to go to Georgia, now that he know’s he is wanted, if he de-commits from Alabama it has nothing to do with or question his integrity. He has the right to change his mind if he think’s he will be happier in Athens.A lot has changed in Athens since he committed in May. His parent’s are the key because Saban will make him feel bad about changing his mind and it doesn’t have anything to do with what Saban want’s it’s all about what Dillon want’s. That’s the difference between CMR and Saban. Saban would play on the kid’s conscience and make him feel bad if he changed his mind and Richt would tell him he hates to lose him but if going to another school makes him happy then by all meant’s do it because it all about what you want not what’s best for Georgia. And that’s what integrity really is.

Well, I am glad we have Grantham (sp) as our DC — he has turned the defense around in 2 years. I live in SC now (grew up in Athens and went to UGA) and Clemson just gave their 1st year OC a big increase in pay — 1.3 million per year. Grantham deserves the same — and I think he is better than Kirby Smart. Our defensive coaches are all great. Get rid of BooBoo and hire someone else and I think we will compete with LSU and Bama. I think a lot of defensive players in the state of Georgia are looking at UGA differently now — they like Grantham’s enthusiasm and toughness.

I basically mean ranked-end-of-season. I said that in the posting.
End-of-season ranking is more meaningful. If you beat a team ranked when you play them and not ranked at the end of the season, that means bunch of other teams beat them as well during the season.

7576…………should be able to commit and sign a contract after their Jr. year. If they get hurt as a Sr. they already signed and have a 1 yr scholly. Changing your mind with 2 months to go is BS. If coaches leave then kids should have to spend the first year at the school he signed with and no 1 year sit out period if he transfers at the end of his first year.

Old Boy…So…Charlie thinks he could play through he issue but missed a lot of practice time due to this back injury and never was able to play through it in his 1st 3 years. The doctor said it would not improve so instead of wasting an athletic scholarship, he was given a medical scholarship where he could finish his education. He transfered and was not able to play at the other school because of, you guessed it, a bad back. I am sure Saban had something to do with that too.
I have never once said it is not oversigning. All I have said is that it is not illegal. No one is breaking any rules and these players know their scholarship is a one year deal. To counter your arguement, can you explain why Tyler Love is still on the Alabama roster? Five star OL who UGA wanted, no injuries but has hardly played at all. Why was he not “processed” from the roster?

Dillon need’s someone to tell him nobody is going to go up to him ,ever , and say ” O you are the one that changed your mind and de-committed from Alabama and went to Georgia. Nobody care’s if a 17 year old changes his mind.
If the NCAA would change the rules and not allow the kid’s to commit until after their football season of their senior year is over then kid’s like Dillon wouldn’t get into this type situation.
I can guarantee Johnson from Gainesville would have never gone to Tennessee if Grantham had a chance to recruit him before he committed . Johnson would have realized that Martinez made a mistake not recognizing him and that Grantham did want him badly but once he committed to Tennessee they used the history with Georgia against him and made it into an insult for Georgia to be interested after the commitment and Johnson got his feeling’s hurt and their is no way you can tell me he is better off now than if he would have chosen Georgia.

7576 – honestly, Saban has the program in a situation now where he doesn’t look back if a player wants to go elsewhere. When Gunner Kiel, the country’s top-rated drop-back QB committed to INDIANA, Saban got off him and took a 3-star kid from Texas. Then Kiel reconsidered, Saban said sorry. We’ve committed to someone else now – you closed the door, not us.
He will make exceptions if you’re an in-state player in these circumstances, but that’s all. Georgia can get used to Saban taking a 1/4 or 1/5 of your top 20 every year. Just how it is.

gary…the 2 kid mentioned, Kirchman and Griffin could not play while they were at Alabama. Kirchman’s back injury kept him from playing for 3 years. Griffin was disqualified by James Andrews who is known as the top orthopedic surgeon in the country. Do you think he would stake his reputation on one kid at Alabama. I am sure you do but use some common sense please. As for the story about the kid at Miami, there was a follow up article with a quote from another guy on the team who said he didnt think Saban or anyone else knew how bad the condition was of this team mate. The was a quote from the kid that Saban “stepped over” said that Saban got to the hospital 45 minutes after he was admitted and stayed the entire day. To paraphrase his comment “I feel better about this team knowing my head coach would be so concerned and spend the entire day at the hospital. But dont let that ruin your story. Also keep in mind that this story was broken 6 years later by a former Auburn fullback. Chew on that for a minute.
I agree that Richt is a good man and I think Saban is too. They have different ways of presenting that to the public. Most of Saban’s former players talk about how he helped make them better men. He had Alabama in the top 3 in graduation rate of his football players. On top of that he has his players learning how to compete and win at the highest level. Seems to me he is doing exactly what a football coach should be doing. I am sure you opinion is different because you want to believe how evil the guy is.

Who’s talking about UGA…nobody outside of this blog. The only reason UGA did well this year was because they didnt have to play Ark, Bama or LSU in the regular season and UT, FL and USC were down. CMR signs another contract and UGA will go back to being mediocre with more than enough players getting arrested, smoking dope or beating up girlfriends. This kid is a great talent and shouldnt waste it on a program that will continue to be in decline.

It is always fun to read the comments on these blogs about Nick Saban. No matter what the article talks about, you will always see that 1) he is leaving tomorrow for a new job 2) he cheats 3) he has no integrity 4) he oversigns 5) he gets credited with statements he did not make. Charlie Kirschman was a 4 yr player “when he was pushed out the door” and had never seen the field, but he “could have played through the pain”? It has been documented and verified that Saban is not connected to the “you have to win your conference” statement. And furthermore, the latest allegation and half truth about the issue at Miami is being pushed by a former Auburn player after what, 5-6 years since it happened. Where has this story been? Some of you need to turn Dad’s computer off and go get your juice box and cookies. The rest of you need to learn how to use spell check, or at least wait till you are old enough to spell before you write in comments. Everyone has opinions and that is ok. Please get your facts right that you use for your opinions. Saban has never been in NCAA trouble nor Saban did not make the 2003 statement about “winning your conference”. Saban does a good job of managing his roster. He has real SEC tailbacks on the depthchart whereas your team has mainly walkon’s.

I respectfully disagree. If thing’s change at a University, like a coaching change or if the school is put on probation the recruit should reevaluate if the school is still what he wants. By your comment I would be amazed if I found out you where over 25 years old and there is no way you are over 45 years old with teen age kid’s or older.
It’s all about what’s best for the recruit not the school and because so many variables change up until signing day the recruit should have as long as possible to way them when making his final decision and if he was not able to commit until December of his senior year he would be more inclined to not making a mistake where he was going to end up playing college ball.

He committed yesterday. Take our Mr. Dillon please. You guys are the MICHIGAN STATE of the SEC, you know that don’t you? And Spartan fans probably don’t appreciate the comparison! Outscored 35-0 in the 2nd half of the SEC Championship game, and that’s not troubling to y’all!? Hilarious, especially after Boca said at halftime y’all were going to play the 2nd half “THE GEORGIA WAY”.Did you ever! “Sun Tan and his Sidekick BooBoo are clueless ain’t they? QUESTION UGA FANS: Which jumps out at you more, Richt and Booboo’s inability to prepare when BAMA outscored you 31 -0 after the 1st half, OR, Richt and Booboo’s inability to adjust when LSU outscored you 35 – 0 in the 2nd half? Hard to decide isn’t it? Over 30 years and counting, and your wimpy AD don’t do nothing about it. And that’s ok with y’all. Just get Dillon Lee. AS IF THAT”S GOING TO CHANGE ANYTHING. Georgia generally finishes strong in recruiting, but up to now you’ve been pummeled in your own state. For the record, Alabama is one face guard penalty in 2008 of being in the national championship game three out of the last four years.
The reason is players. Saban is a great recruiter. He sells excellence. He sells academics. He sells high expectations. You don’t like that? Tough. You don’t matter. The kids and the parents do. That’s why there’s a line every year at the front door.

roaddawg80,
I basically mean ranked-end-of-season. I said that in the posting.
—————————————
The “end-of-season” rank thing isn’t crap unless you talk about a team that was ranked high at the beginning of the season then got punked by several teams along the way. But if a team is ranked number 7 eight games into the season then gets beat twice dropping them to #18 we’ll say, then I think it’s more important what they were ranked when you played them. For example:
Team is ranked #7 and loses to #15, #7 likely drops to at least #10 or #11
But, if team is ranked #7 and WINS against #15, they likely may move up to #5 or #6
So if the team lost to #15, then also loses a second game, then they are probably sitting at #18 or #19 themselves.
But, if the team won against #15 and moved up a spot or two, then lost to the next team, they probably are still in the top 10. So to say where they finished is what matters most really isn’t necessarily true because we only seem to base it on the fact that the team lost, not taking into account what would have happened to the rank had the team won.
