Alabama flirts with Georgia DB who is committed to South Carolina

South Carolina DB recruit Rico McWilliams (AJC)

South Carolina DB recruit Rico McWilliams (AJC)

Alabama is flirting with one of Georgia’s best cornerbacks, Lovejoy’s Rico McWilliams. He committed to South Carolina last summer.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound McWilliams is considered one of the state’s top “cover corners” and has helped lead Lovejoy to the Class AAAA state championship game against Tucker at 8 p.m. Friday. McWilliams has prototype size, speed (4.4 in the 40), and athleticism for the DB position.

Lovejoy coach Al Hughes said he has been contacted by Alabama assistants Kirby Smart and Chris Rumph about his star defender.

“They made an ‘unofficial’ scholarship offer,” Hughes told the AJC. “They’ve want to sign three cornerbacks this year, and he’s one of those three. Alabama said that they know his focus is on the state championship game. They told him to think about things, and after the playoffs are over, they would continue to pursue him if he’s interested.”

McWilliams said, “Coach Smart is a good coach, and he’s really likes me. He said they need more DBs. That’s good and a real honor that they like me. Don’t get me wrong, but right now I’m focused on the state championship and trying to get that ring. I’m not going to really think about anything to do with recruiting until after the state championship game.”

McWilliams said he remains committed to South Carolina.

Whoa Alabama too late evaluating and offering top talent. These kind of mistakes are going to keep the Tide second fiddle to LSU for the third year in a row.

These are the kinds of LOCAL GA. HS FB Recruits that GT badly needs, yet they continue to lose out on to schools like USCe, Tenn., Auburn, Clemson etc.

Metro Area stud recruits that grown up less than 45 mins to GT ’s campus, and yet very FEW if none of them ever say that GT is their “Dream School”.

This is what happens when you let DRad and Coach Kung Fu Panda water down the schedule and play 2nd-rate teams like Elon, W. Carolina, MTSU, etc.

For the 4th year in a row it is obvious that CPJ is a terrible Recruiter.

In a crappy ACC, combined with a crappy OOC Schedule, GT should be a consistent Top-15 Team every year if they could only Recruit better close to home here in the 5.5 million person Metro Atlanta Area.

Academics is NOT the problem, there are ENOUGH of these Recruits that can major in Bus. Admin. at GT.

GT Fans need to stop insulting the “knowledgeable segment” of the CFB World by claiming that Academics is keeping them from having a better CFB Program.

I made these same claims in DEC.. 2007 When Coach Fish Fry was hired and they still hold true today.

Right on. This kid right here went to Lovejoy, a very good school academically that used to play in 5A. He didn’t say GT was his dream school, but he would rather go there than either of those two places, if GT can make the pitch sound good enough. UGA or GT would have the first right of refusal with guys like this.

Watch out Kid; “unofficial offers” are how schools in the SEC-w are able to get away with all their over-signing.

People talk about the strength of the SEC-w, but it does seem odd that the SEC-w has the most schools accused of over-signing the previous 4 years, and lo & behold they have a record year as far as performance on the field.

Just a coincidence, I think not.

Hey JB, what if all 30 of them signed? I have to give it to Bama, they actually can afford to turn kids away, lie to them, etc. and nobody places any blame them. They just rationalize, “Hey, everybody wants to go to Alabama and they just didn’t have enough room for me!”

I agree WnE. As a Dawg fan/grad, I find academics to be a tired excuse. There are majors at GT which are suitable for athletes. How does baseball and basketball recruit and compete? I do realize, though, that there are more “easy” majors available at most other schools.

Lastly, GREAT POINT on over-signing. I also feel the NCAA should step in and prevent over-signing. Heck they have their hands in everything else. If not the NCAA, Congress, as we see the economic disparity between the schools/conferences who do it and those who do not.

On another note to the Bama bashers. Bama is not the “ONLY” school that over signs. Check your records. Example: Georgia signed more than Alabama last year.
Sign another “Dream Team” see where that gets you. Any good Football program is going to have depth. I.E BAMA/LSU Nobody forces any of these kids to sign up to any school, they can see what they are getting into.

I’m a GT grad, but uga & CMR have never over signed and they are the only SEC school other than Vandy to have never over signed, UF might be the 3rd, but the other 9 SEC schools have definitely over-signed.

Also, last yr. is the first year that Saban hasn’t over-signed and that’s because he started to take heat in the Media from legit sources like the Wall St. Journal about Bama’s Recruiting practices, but Bama did over sign the previous 4 yrs. as did the entire SEC-W, but Bama got the bad press because they have more name recognition than the other schools in the SEC-w.

Rico,
Check out how many STARTING NFL DBs are out there from SCAR. Let me name a few:

Dunta Robinson (FALCONS), Jonathan Joseph (TEXANS), Sheldon Brown (BROWNS), Andre Goodman (BRONCOS), Captain Munnerlyn (PANTHERS), Chris Culliver (49ers), Darian Stewart (Rams)…quality and quantity.

The NFL scouts know to come to SCAR for DBs. BAMA has had many 5 or 4-star DB recruits but that hasn’t translated into the same NFL talent. No BAMA coach can dispute this fact.

WnE…as a BAMA fan I cannot argue that we did oversign several classes. However, it’s not against the rules so I fail to see why this is a big deal. If UGA was doing it, I guarantee you all the fans who have some moral opposition to it now would be ok with it, especially if it puts them in a position to compete for championships. A scholarship is a one year agreement between an athlete and school. I cannot speak for what other coaches do but recruits to Alabama are made aware of this and we ever had one guy say as much last year in an interview with the Alabama Rivals site. When what he is doing is illegal, then you have a gripe.

Looks like the Gamecocks are going to have a very good year recruiting Georgia corners. Kudos to the coaching staff for doing a great job of evaluating talent and ringing them into the fold. Bear Butt – Georgia had a small class last year and did not over sign. Everyone they signed got in school with the exception of those who did not qualify academically and had to go to prep school. I think there were two of them. Saban learned how to cut players in his failed, short term NFL career. Now he cuts college kids every time he signs someone he thinks is better. I expect the cut players are taken care of by Bama boosters in order to keep them from complaining.

Let me get this straight, WSJ and UGA fan bloggers know something about Saban and BAMA that HS recruits don’t? No HS coaches, players, or their parents know about oversigning? Please inform them immediately, genius.

Let me ask you, when a kid goes to UGA on an academic scholarship and doesnt hold up his end of the deal, are you writing to the UGA administration talking about how wrong it is that they lose their scholarship? TampaLittleDoggie…poor pitiful you…Richt can’t manage his roster and that is clear. Hell the guy has been at UGA for 10 years and he and his thug Garner can’t manage numbers!! Nick tells the guys that will get a greyshirt up front that if certain players above them on the chart come to Bama then their offer will be a greyshirt and again they and their parents understand this from day #1. There is about 4 on this plan this year but until the big guys make the final call on NSD they don’t know if they will be a greyshirt or not. 85 is the number and perhaps you should explain the 85 to Richteboy and DaGarner the thug.

This is not academic scholarships we are talking about. If they don’t get grades, yes, they lose the scholarship. Most of these players don’t even get a chance to compete.

Willie, oh wet one, you just stated the problem and you don’t even know it. Most of these kids that are “greyshirted” could play somewhere else but then when the “big boys” finally make their decision, and most don’t do it until NSD or in some cases, after that, slots for other teams they would play for are filled.

As for a thug, how’s Trent Richardson doing? And for a college player with a broke family, that dude is financially loaded. How did that happen?

the problem with oversigning is not with the players on the roster. The problem is how many players they can actually bring in. They off to more kids than they have spots for, then they let more kids commit than they have spots for. Then when it comes time the for the papers to be signed players or told that they there is no room for them in this class. Why not enrole and we will give you a scholarship in the spring (grey shirt). Having no other choice other than the embarasment of going back a telling everyone that they did not get the scholarship they thought they had some kids agree to greyshirt.

While not illegal it is not moral.

If you know how oversigning and grayshirting work (including the inherent risks) then it’s safe to conclude that the HS players, coaches, and parents know, too. If a kid takes that risk with BAMA instead of signing somewhere else, what is your issue?

Enjoy run down, filthy TAMPA FL UGA FANS. That BOWEL is just the kind of game you deserve. Oh, lets see if you win that game.

BAMA beat them really bad last year 49-7. See what Mich St Coach said:

“When you look at us, we were out-coached, we were outplayed and we were (beaten physically),” Dantonio said. “It’s just the way it is, and sometimes there’s an avalanche that comes upon you.”

Alabama held Michigan State to 171 yards of total offense, including a minus-48 yards rushing. It was the worst rushing performance by a Michigan State game in 21 bowl appearances, and included 56 net yards lost by quarterback Kirk Cousins, who was sacked four times.

The Spartans were battered physically. Cousins, backup quarterback Andrew Maxwell, tight end Charlie Gant, Rucker, linebackers Chris Norman and Eric Gordon and wide receivers Mark Dell and Nichol were among the Michigan State players who left the field shaken up or injured for at least portions of the game.

Lets see what THE PUPPIES DO AGAINST MICH STATE

This kid is a contingency plan should Bama’s JUCO corner not make it academically. I’m sure Rico was told this upfront. It’s sad that the UGA fans are acting like Aubies these days. Jealous and butt-hurt. Btw, if Bama landed Crowell, coaches would’ve had him tote the rock as a third stringer…to learn the game and acquire some humility. Saint Richt piled those puppies in crowells lap and has been an 18-19 year old’s **tch ever since. Told he’s the best and now the kid won’t work for it. It’s ok, Jesus and Richt have a plan going forward…not to worry
