Kicker Ryan Frain, who is committed to Illinois, was recently offered a scholarship by Georgia Tech and will make an official visit to Yellow Jackets this weekend, according to JacketsOnline.
Last week, Illinois fired coach Ron Zook, which has caused the 6-foot-2, 210-pound Frain to consider options.
“[I am] going to take an official visit to Tech this weekend and I don’t feel like I am disrespecting my commitment because I need to make sure I am not stiffed whenever Illinois hires their next coach,” Frain told the website.
Here’s some video of the Indianapolis kicker … as it says on the video “Come on board, and get on the Frain Train.”

GT definitely needs a new kicker but I am not too excited about having to use another scholarship for it. Then again if he can kick it from the 20 and do the same thing he does in the video I would probably get over it.

Can someone please explain to me why coaches don’t pursue kickers harder. How many points every year are left on the field because of poor kicking?

I think its a good move to get a really good kicker on scholarship. Most good teams have a solid kicking game.

SB – Mike Ditka used to be the same way in the pros. But, look at certain Miami and FSU games. How often does a kicker affect the outcome of a game, a season, or a championship? Also, usually your kicker is one of your top three scorers on the team.
This guy, along with the other two ship-jumpers we’ve got coming in this weekend, would make a HUGE impact on the Flats. When you see him boot the 49-yarder straight through the uprights with AT LEAST 10 YARDS TO SPARE, you know he’s special. Go get ‘em CPJ!

Obviously kickers are important. If Boise state made two short field goals the past two years, they would have made both bcs championship games.

Hope he has a great visit. He certainly would have an immediate opportunity to play at GT, plus he’d get a great education.

This kid Ryan looks to be the real deal. Until we can establish consistancy in our kicking game – we will be holding our breath on every punt that it goes more than 20 yards – on every kick off that it makes it past the twenty yard line and every field goal that we don’t kick it into the centers ass. Special teams start with a special kicker / punter and Ryan looks to be special. If we could get him -all we’d have to be worried about then would be our tackling – blocking – and setting lanes for returns.

A good/great kicker can make or break a game sometimes. Johnson knows that his Special Teams play was sub-par this year and it makes total sense to offer a scholarship to improve this situation. This kid looks like the real deal and I hope you all can land him this weekend.

To those who think kickers are not important, just look at the LSU/GA game last weekend. The LSU aussie punter was directly responsible for LSU having points in the first half. His punt pinned GA and forced them to kick from their end zone. GA punter out kicks coverage; result TD.
Would we have won the national championship without Scott Sisson?

As mentioned above, Boise State is a GREAT example. As well as the FSU “wide right” “wide left” games. How many missed National Championships is that for just those two schools b/c of bad kicking?
And don’t forget this year’s Oklahoma State team. Their 1 loss (OT to Iowa State), even though replay showed the kick to be good, was b/c of a missed FG at the end of regulation.

I saw Durant Brooks win games for us.
If, after a demoralizing 3-and-out, the kicker can pin the other team inside their 20 you can save some serious momentum. That’s huge.
We need a lights out kicker.

A good kicker would be good. Dalvin would be GREAT!!! DL and ST and completion % have been the achilles heel for GT since 2008. Vad apparently coming back, a better kicking game and ST, ALONG with an improved DL would GET GT TO THE NEXT LEVEL!!!!!!!!!

Recruit the kicker from Westminster!!!! Unreal leg! 50 + yarders all year long. Plus he is smart and wants an education. That knocks UGA out of the picture.

He kicks and punts. A lot of punts on the vid were off of bad snaps, too. This guy looks pretty good on the film.
There are a lot of good H.S. kickers in GA, too. Johns Creek HS has a good kicker (Kyle Fowler). Maybe not as much leg as this guy but he’s still a Jr. (haven’t seen him punt, either).
