Chaz Elder: South Carolina leads UGA for DB

Chaz prediction?

UGA will get its best shot at one of the state’s top uncommitted football prospects next week.

Chaz Elder, a defensive back from Banneker High School, will take his official visit to UGA on Dec. 9. It is the biggest recruiting weekend of the year for the Bulldogs, which have 15 commitments and are trying to land as many as 10 more.

What’s the deal with Elder? It appears to be a two-team race between a pair of SEC East schools, South Carolina and UGA. The Gamecocks have been the longtime frontrunners for the 6-foot-2, 180-pounder, who took an official visit to South Carolina last weekend.

“It’s still the same; it looks like he’s still South Carolina’s to lose,” Banneker assistant Ryan Andrews said. “He loved his visit to South Carolina, he loved being at the game when they played Clemson. He was impressed with atmosphere and had a blast. South Carolina is looking to start him off at corner and eventually may move him to safety. It just depends on how his body grows.”

South Carolina gained favor with Elder by recruiting him as a cornerback rather than at safety. Elder would like to give cornerback a shot first in college. UGA was initially recruiting Elder at safety, but has since changed its stance. “Georgia said that they would give him the opportunity to play corner but that they are definitely looking at him as a safety, too.”

Elder is scheduled to announce his college decision on Jan. 5 at the Under Armour All-American game. There’s also may be some new developments. Elder is considering taking official visits later that same month to two other SEC schools – Arkansas and Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt has always been in the sweepstakes for Elder, but Arkansas? “They’ve been keeping tabs on him all year now,” Andrews explained. “Now that Arkansas has some ‘down time’ with the season being over with, they’ve come in and started to pick it back up, as far as recruiting Chaz.”

Arkansas is also flirting with Elder’s teammate, 6-foot-5 tight end Larry Jefferson, who committed early to Louisville. Jefferson is considering recruiting trips to Cincinnati and Arkansas on January.

Back to UGA: Mississippi State DB commit Will Redmond will make an official visit to UGA next weekend. The 6-foot, 180-pounder from Memphis will also take trips to Notre Dame, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. “I just want to make sure I didn’t make a mistake,” Redmond told Rivals.com’s Keith Niebuhr. “When I take officials to these schools, it’s just to make sure.”

Florida or Bama? Buford TE Kurt Freitag picks Monday

Florida or Bama? Buford TE Kurt Freitag picks Monday

  • Another one of the state’s top uncommitted seniors will announce on Monday. Kurt Freitag, a tight end from Buford High School, will decide between Florida and Alabama on Monday. Freitag was originally going to decide at next weekend’s state championship games but bumped it up to Monday. Buford, the four-time defending Class AA state champions, plays at Carver-Columbus (Isaiah Crowell’s old stomping grounds) in Friday’s semifinals. Back to Freitag: He will be the seventh Buford senior to commit to a D1 program, which is quite an accomplishment for such a small school. They could add 2-3 more before February. It’s Stephenson High School that leads the state with 12 seniors committed to FBS schools.
  • St. Pius LB Joseph Crochet committed to The Citadel, joining his high school teammate, QB Trey White, in picking the Southern Conference school … Golf: Sequoyah High School’s Riley Davenport signed with North Carolina.

When you recruit as well as Buford does, it is not really that surprising to have that many commits. The GHSA should quit worrying so much about realigning all the schools and should crack down on the recruiters like Buford, Milton, Norcross, etc.

I would imagine Freitag goes to Bama as the Gators already have commits from two top TE prospects in Thompson and Taylor, and they already have Jordan Reed (Soph) and A.C. Leonard (Fr) on the roster. But I know he has been very impressed with Florida, and maybe he is a player and does not mind competing for the position. Florida needs those type of players on offense right now.

Where IS TECH when any of these studs come up. This DB could start for Tech now. They really need defensive help NOW. Johnson has landed in the mid 40’s in rivals ranking the last two years, and tell me they don’t mean anything, but DID YOU SEE TECH PLAY against Georgia????? Mid 40’s means who aren’t getting big time players. Yes, you’ll get a gem or two, but you need players, play makers and lot’s of them. Tech, it ain’t happening. Spin it away, tell us you’re coaching them up yadda yadda yadda……

Dan Mullin would be foolish to head to Penn State during this current climate. Save yourself and go to Arizona St. or UCLA or just wait it out until after Christmas. You don’t want to be the man who follows the man, especially after a devastating scandal.

On another note, it appears CTG is recruiting a lot of taller corners, and I understand why. But there is one problem with 6 feet and above DB, especially at corner: Hip movement and back pedaling. Their legs are simply too long and there hips are not as flexible as a CB standing 5′9-5′10. Yes those two or three inches do make a difference as far as being able to turn “on a dime” as they say. But bigger corners are better against the run.

@JB

Where is Tech? Chan Gailey would be all over this guy. But CPJ is so arrogant, he will not stop recruiting FCS type of players and thinking he will just outsmart the competition. CPJ is confident, but it has turned into arrogance because he never blames himself for losing, it’s always the players. So, the question for CPJ is this: Since the players need to execute better, then get better players that can execute at this level. Fire Al Groh and hire Mike Stoops. Tech’s defense, at a minimum, should have a lot of head hunters. Look at all the defensive players Tech put into the league before he got there. Without better players, Tech cannot run a 3-4 defense.

Old Dawg….

Just go check Florida’s current recruit commit lists and national recruiting ranking to understand just
how wrong…..and biased your comments are…..not just against those talented recruits……but also against all people who struggle daily with weight and health issues. Florida’s lack of talent on the offensive side of the ball is troubling, but the coaching skills of Charlie Weis are not. And Muschamp had his troubles this year as well, but he does need another year or two to get his type of players on offense….and at some postions on defense……but mainly increase the depth of the team from its current roster of 67 back up to 85….and then see how Muschamp and Weis do. I think they will do just fine at that time. But it is going to take time. So enjoy your freedom from the Gators right now….it won’t last long….but…..unfortunately, too many people like you have to do it in such a mean spirited way.

Can Greg Blue talk to Elder? What’s Uga’s relationship to Blue? Excelled at safety under Van Gorder, and is a Banneker grad. Has Richt kept up with him. I know he came from a tough background, yet apparently “made it”.? Reminds me a lot of your Jarvis Jones, who is highly respected in the Columbus community for overcoming tremendous odds. I guess the question is: Has Richt kept up with Blue? How does Blue feel about UGA today? Can anyone do a follow up on him? He could probably really help with Elder, if he still has positive feelings about Richt and UGA. Would be a nice follow up story Michael. Where is Greg Blue and how is he doing?

@ Tampa Gator – Florida is caught in a slight down cycle due to Urban bailing a year before he left and the coaching change. Much like UGA’s defense last year in learning and filling slots with better personnel – Florida is doing the same on both sides of the ball.

Too much talent in the state of Florida and too large a commitment to the football program for the Gators to mediocre too long. I expect improvement next year and vast improvement in year 3.

As for kids transferring – no big deal at all. UGA lost several players the last couple of years – to our benefit. It opens up space to kids that want to be at the school and allows coaches to fill slots that better fit their system.

With that said – really enjoyed the victory in JAX this year. I do not care what Florida’s overall record is – anytime we win at the WLOCP – it’s a great thing for UGA!

Urban Meyer is the next Woody Hayes. To much pressure at Ohio State to win now. They are about to be hit with major sanctions by the NCAA. Possibly, no bowl games for the next three years and up to 15 scholarships lost over the next three years. They are also considering banning them from any TV for the next three years. I don’t think Urban will be coaching three years from now. Muschamp will be leaving Florida at about the same time – three years. Dooley will be gone at Tennessee in three years. Spurrier will be retiring at South Carolina in three years. Saban never stays anywhere longer than 5 years and his time will be up at Bama. Malzone (?) will be leaving Miss State soon for higher ground (maybe Penn State?), Ole will get a new coach next year, Vandy’s head coach is already being courted by higher paying schools, Richt may be the only SEC head coach still around thre years from now. Recruits need to realize that stability is important to success. It will be Richt in the east and Less Miles in the west.

Well stated Dawgster. I am not a Charlie Weis fan (especially now that he’s a Gator) but I don’t think FL will be down for long; there is just too much talent in the state. As for the success of Charlie Weiss, I think he will need to simplify his playbook as this definitely hurt him at ND.

Leave Milton alone, we arent doing anything illegal or they would have already been in trouble. They have been getting kids to transfer since I was in HS their 10 years ago. These kids that come are getting a chance to get out of their current environment and into a very nice community and get to display their talents on a national level!

SEC East is a changing

November 30th, 2011
10:13 am

My, how quickly things change. UGA IS IN the driver’s seat now in the East. Spurrier is all but done and will have won only ONE East title at SC when he is done and Florida is done for at least three more years with no talent. UT? Barbara Dooley will try to keep her baby employed but she/he had better win 7 or 8 next year. KY and Vandy are always trying to make an UP move with their latest, greatest coaching staff.

UGA IS THE TEAM in the East for two or three more years. Talent AND STAFF in place. See SEC CG. Regardless of how UGA fares …………………. it is THE START of a RUN to GLORY. Get used to it haters.

SEC West will be about the same BUT ALABAMA AND LSU Are NOT going to have the same key position level of talent of the last two years. MSU’s Mullin is leaving and Ole Miss is Ole Miss. Mizzo and A&M? They will need two or three years on D to come up to par. ARKY is ARKY. Up and Down they are and will be.

SEC IS UGA’s for some time to come. It is all cyclical. GT? Their UP cycle was in the early 1950s.

PJ wont go after these players unless Ball State, Ga.Southern or Wofford offers. These super stars sure dont want to play with “dinosaur” Al Groh and his defense and watch Murray pass all day on them. We will compete in the ACC, but never will we beat Ga. unless we get players and coaches that are not intimadated by them. Georgia just knows when they play Tech, that they are going to win, GT will flub it up somehow.
