UGA will get its best shot at one of the state’s top uncommitted football prospects next week.
Chaz Elder, a defensive back from Banneker High School, will take his official visit to UGA on Dec. 9. It is the biggest recruiting weekend of the year for the Bulldogs, which have 15 commitments and are trying to land as many as 10 more.
What’s the deal with Elder? It appears to be a two-team race between a pair of SEC East schools, South Carolina and UGA. The Gamecocks have been the longtime frontrunners for the 6-foot-2, 180-pounder, who took an official visit to South Carolina last weekend.
“It’s still the same; it looks like he’s still South Carolina’s to lose,” Banneker assistant Ryan Andrews said. “He loved his visit to South Carolina, he loved being at the game when they played Clemson. He was impressed with atmosphere and had a blast. South Carolina is looking to start him off at corner and eventually may move him to safety. It just depends on how his body grows.”
South Carolina gained favor with Elder by recruiting him as a cornerback rather than at safety. Elder would like to give cornerback a shot first in college. UGA was initially recruiting Elder at safety, but has since changed its stance. “Georgia said that they would give him the opportunity to play corner but that they are definitely looking at him as a safety, too.”
Elder is scheduled to announce his college decision on Jan. 5 at the Under Armour All-American game. There’s also may be some new developments. Elder is considering taking official visits later that same month to two other SEC schools – Arkansas and Vanderbilt.
Vanderbilt has always been in the sweepstakes for Elder, but Arkansas? “They’ve been keeping tabs on him all year now,” Andrews explained. “Now that Arkansas has some ‘down time’ with the season being over with, they’ve come in and started to pick it back up, as far as recruiting Chaz.”
Arkansas is also flirting with Elder’s teammate, 6-foot-5 tight end Larry Jefferson, who committed early to Louisville. Jefferson is considering recruiting trips to Cincinnati and Arkansas on January.
Back to UGA: Mississippi State DB commit Will Redmond will make an official visit to UGA next weekend. The 6-foot, 180-pounder from Memphis will also take trips to Notre Dame, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. “I just want to make sure I didn’t make a mistake,” Redmond told Rivals.com’s Keith Niebuhr. “When I take officials to these schools, it’s just to make sure.”
